If I could give this place less than a star I would. Customer service at this place was terrible! Stood there for 15 minutes waiting for my order to be taken. The whole time the guy that was taking the orders was serving people that had just walked up, completely ignoring those of us who've been waiting their turn patiently, and for what? Some dried up, rubbery, tasteless bits of meat on a tortilla bread? No thanks!! I'll pass and take my business elsewhere. Finished up a show at Blue Light Live and needed some food! We wondered over to Big E's and it smelled delicious AF!! We walked up saw the meat cooking on the grill and it looked awesome!! Word on the street was to order the chicken all the way. So, we did. They were out of chicken. That's okay, they still had brisket, sausage, and steak. Oh man, we could not wait to put all that meat in our mouths. Well, we got back to the car and unwrapped our tacos. We took our first bites and... This is the part where I want to tell you they were as delicious as they looked. This is the part where I want to tell you the meat melted in our mouths. Sadly this was not the case. Every other bite had fatty gristle and we had to spit them out. All the meat was as tough as my boots on a cold winter day. WTF??? We were sooo dissapointed. I hope this was a one off occurrence and they don't serve this type of food to the drunk college kids in town because they don't know any better. I guess the chicken is the way to go, thus them selling out. It was like a bad date. Where the person was beautiful or handsome and everything you ever wanted, but when you went in for the kiss they had the most God awful breath and body odor. Sooo disappointing. The only thing they serve is wraps and there's no where to sit down to eat if you do order. The woman that approached me didn't even smile or ask "can I help you?" I had to start the conversation by asking for a menu and where to sit down. She said they have no menu they only serve brisket wraps or chicken wraps. I left without ordering. Before you come out to Big E's BBQ, you should know what to expect; it's a permanent roadside stand, tucked in between some other businesses. No seating, no "lobby", just enough structure that they can pull down the flaps and lock up the grill and freezers. And the service and food is exactly what you should expect from a rundown pile of bricks manned by a couple of washed up derelicts. When I walked up they barely acknowledged me, like they don't have any idea what a lunch time customer looks like. I choose the steak wrap with bbq sauce, because I like meat. Another man was there with a group order, which he placed while I waited - it was like watching a Laurel and Hardy bit - "three chicken...", "three chicken...", "three chicken and a chicken and sausage...", "three chicken and a chicken and sausage...", "three chicken and a chicken and sausage and a chicken and beef...", "three chicken and an all three...", "no, a chicken and sausage and a chicken and beef...", "three chicken...", "yeah, and a chicken and sausage and a chicken and beef...", " and a chicken and beef?" I doubt that order was completed correctly the first time. The steak was medium-well done, and the sauce wasn't overwhelming, but the steak strips were not tender enough to tear. So there I am, gnawing at a burrito, pulling steaks strips twice the size of my fat, adult fingers, out of the tortilla and gulping them down like a snake with my jaw unhinged. I like meat, and the taste was fine, but I really wish I'd had a knife and fork. The food isn't bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way to try Big E's. read more

You haven't really lived in Lubbock until you've had Ferlis BBQ, now known as Big E's. Ferlis Ellis has been around the LBK for as long as I know, serving up the simplest, most delicious barbeque around. He started with just a mobile BBQ grill that you could smell and seek out after leaving any club in the Depot District. He would be on any number of street corners, and you would follow your nose and then devour either sausage or brisket wrapped in a tortilla with whatever goodness you request - pico de gallo, extra bbq sauce (spicy or not), and/or hot sauce. Now he has a permanent location, so you know exactly where to walk / weave after your night out on the town. Still the same basic menu, although I think he's added a few variations. Ferlis has the best late night cuisine in the south plains. Don't miss it if you're in town. read more

Man, this is some authenticity, here. You've basically got your choice of Texas style BBQ'd meat wrapped in a fire-warmed tortilla and your choice of condiments. Those days being behind me, I'll often drop down there for some late night snack-ige on Saturday nights. Why Saturday night, specifically, you ask? Because that's the only day they'll grill shrimp. I've even asked them to carry it every night, but Ferlis won't have it. He said he wants to keep it special. So, Saturday it is. I get the chicken/shrimp combo with bbq sauce and mustard. Divine. I've found their pico (w/fresh jalepeño) & hot sauces too spicy. I can generally handle my heat, but it's just too overwhelming in these wraps. Especially since I get shrimp. I want to be able to taste, enjoy and savor these babies. I'm telling you, these shrimp are grilled and seasoned to perfection and compliment the chicken beautifully. Trust me on this one. Chicken & Shrimp combo, with bbq & mustard. Simple, delicious, authentic TX BBQ! Cons: I'd stay away from the brisket. Last time I tried it (2-3 weeks ago) it was really tough. It comes in fajita-sized strips and you can't cut through them. You end up pulling the whole strip out when you bite and have to chew the hell out of it. (I was going to give 5 stars until I remembered that.) This was why I hadn't tried it in so long. Sausage: I'm sure they're pretty good, but unless you have a death wish, I'd stay away from eating a footlong piece of sausage. p.s. - When you walk up, be prepared to smell like BBQ for the rest of the time you wear those close and have not have washed your hair. The guys are cooking over a huge, wood-fired grill that emanates smokey goodness. Which reminds me, the guys are cool and really nice. Most of them have been working there for years. Tip them well. I like this place for late-night. Workers are typically friendly and it takes no longer than 5 minutes to get your bbq taco. My favorite is the sausage with pico and bbq sauce, the steak is good too. The tacos are $6 each, but they are loaded with meat & cooked to order generally. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but if you're out in the depot and you're hungry, check this place out. read more

SOOOO good! I go here sometimes after leaving the depot. The owner is a very nice, appreciative gentleman who serves up some MEAN meat. I usually order the sausage in a tortilla with spicy sauce. Superb! Only reason I took off a star is because I paid roughly $9 for two orders of sausage wraps. A tad ridiculous for not very much food, but delicious none the less. read more

I discovered this place while walking along depot district and following the aroma of barbecue. The food is quite delicious for a lesser amount of price. You can definitely get more food for your buck. Place does not have seats and tables. You can either eat your food standing or take it to go which most customers do. Parking is on the streets. The sauce of BBQ is a must to have. It's flavorful and has a bit of spicy hint. If you don't like hot sauce then stick with regular barbecue sauce. My first time to stay in Lubbock was Texas Tech homecoming weekend. My buddy and I came over to see his daughter cheer and see the game. I read all the reviews here and I just laughed at the bad reviews!!! My frame of reference is that I grew up in Louisiana and soul food and black culture are what you seek for a great experience and the best ethnic food where I come from. All these Whataburger gobbling goat ropers and city kids transplanted to farm country sound like they need to find a Chipotle and leave the real food to the initiated. This food rocks!! But, it ain't Bob's Chop House or Pappa's Steakhouse. It's a full on limited menu of quality food that's as much an experience as a meal! We returned the next night and saw a steady stream of customers, many obviously regulars, coming and going happy as clams with their food both nights (and we didn't even arrive until after the bars closed). This place is super sketchy. Better to bring cash because their card machine is on the fritz. They have this really short girl behind this huge counter that's all outside and out in the open. They're just barbecuing huge slabs of meat in the open so it's really smoky within 100 feet of it. Best for late night when you've done major damage to your kidneys and want to abuse your colon as well. Never got our card receipt so wasn't sure how much we paid until we checked online. Went with a group, 4 out of 5 of our burrito/tacos had inedible meat that we ended up throwing away. It looked so good from pics but going there was a big let down. Not for sensitive stomachs, kind of spicy. It was packaged so messily and there was sauce spilling out the sides. The meat wasn't chewable at all. Literally just ate the tortilla and that was it. Maybe we went on a bad day because the line was 10 people long but didn't look like anyone really liked their food. Would have never found this place without a guide leading us there. I've stumbled over to this place after a late night in the Depot more times than I can count. Before coming to Tech I had never had a brisket taco, but good lord I am so thankful I have now. In terms of functionality, this place is really just a kitchen where you wait in line (it moves quickly, don't worry) for BBQ that tastes like it was made by Jesus himself. This is the kind of place where you order a taco to eat, and take 3 more home so you can waddle to the fridge and eat them cold at 4 am - yes, they are still just as amazing cold. When I graduate from Texas Tech, I know I'll look back on this place as a quintessential part of my college experience. I work at one of the bars around the corner and I swear I can smell it every night I work. If I have cash on me I'll go over there and get a brisket wrap with bbq and pico de gallo (10/10 great combination) or a sausage wrap with mustard...no matter what you choose it's going to come from the grill to your hands in less than 10-15 seconds so it's always hot when you eat it. Maybe it is good for drunk people. I had the brisket burrito with pico de gallo. The brisket was tough, like a well done steak, 50% of it was fat, and even had a big chunk that couldn't be chewed at all. Seems like it is not smoked long enough, if at all. You get a decent amount but with all that fat it is not worth the $6. It comes wrapped in a paper towel and aluminum foil, so you will have to pick out the paper towel out of the burrito. Had better brisket burritos at UMC hospital. Maybe I got a bad batch or the chicken might be a better route. read more

This has got to be one of the best stops in Lubbock. They may not have hours posted, anywhere that I've found, but generally thursday friday and saturday night they can be found open. The staff is always very social and helpful when trying new things, I really loved the pico and chicken as well as the brisket with bbq sauce and hot sauce. The only detractor I think is worth posting, is that the brisket is pretty chewy sometimes. If it was moist I would have given it a higher rating. read more

BOYCOTT THIS ESTABLISHMENT!! The owner hit me for no reason while I was giving my order to his daughter. After ordering 5 of their brisket burritos, the daughter states the total would be $30. I exclaimed, "what?! It used to be $5 per burrito." She explained that the price went up $1. I was more than willing to pay the increased amount; however, as I was pulling cash out of my wallet to pay for the food, the owner came over, smacked me in the head and yelled, "nobody talks to my daughter that way!" Clearly, he was not aware of the context of his daughter and my conversation. The fact that he would reach over the counter and strike one of their patrons is an atrocity.
