I ordered for lunch through Grubhub....the app itself is not great but has nothing to do with the restaurant or the food which was quite tasty!!! I had the Big Herm's Wing Basket with sesame ginger. OMG, the wings were cooked perfectly...the sauce made it that much more delicious. The collard greens were a touch salty but still pretty good. The Mac and cheese was on the money, it's a staple. Its definitely not the disgusting, liquidity cheese sauce kind but instead the down south, home loving, Thanksgiving kind of Mac & cheese. Last but not least, the cornbread. Flash forward to present day, my mom loves Big Herm's! She was the first person to introduce this take-out/delivery spot to me. Her go-to is their Chicken Wing Basket.. I've had it myself a few times.. The wings are excellently season & fried to a crispy perfection. It's served with a side and cornbread. I typically get fries, which are pretty decent. Slightly on the tick side, and could be season a little more.. but hey, toss some ketchup on them & they're good to go! This past Thursday I decided to order Big Herm's for lunch. I ordered a Bacon Cheese Burger with fries, a side of Mac & Chz, and Cornbread. The burger patty was a nice size and phenomenally cooked, well all the way through yet still provided a nice juicy bite.. Taste wise, it was good, but could have used some more seasoning... The Mac & Chz was pretty on point, not the best I've had but really good. The cornbread here, which contains actual kernels of corn, is top notch. Very sweet, yet savory. I ordered their takeout using Grubhub. I was a bit apprehensive because my first thought was that it would be too greasy and salty, but it was actually very good. Although it is probably not very healthy, I have ordered from here multiple times now. They have the best Philly Cheesesteak! I am certainly NOT a fan of Philly Cheesesteak, but theirs is delicious! Also, the wings are perfection! I don't drink, but they'd probably be great for anyone with a hangover. What I really want to talk about is the cornbread! I had take out lunch from BHK today, a co worker drove to pick it up for me. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and sweet potato fries. I am a lover of all things quesadilla.. And this place did a pretty good job. I took my chances ordering a quesadilla on takeout.. Its much better fresh from the kitchen, no wait.. But I wanted to try this place I took the risk. The sweet potato fries were another story.. They put cinnamon on them... I didnt care for the cinnamon taste making the fries sweet like that. I love my sweet potato fries plain with a dab of salt. They were also pretty sooggy, that doubly (pretty sure thats not a word, but oh well) ruined the, for me completely.. Nothing worse than soggy fries. I will try them again, i can tell the foods good, just might not be a take out place for a quesadilla though. read more

Wow. Out for a drive not knowing what we wanted for dinner. Someone from RMC suggested Big Herm's. I got the mushroom Swiss burger and omg it is probably the best burger I have had in a long time. Juicy, seasoned just right and huge burger. This isn't some wimpy pre made burger patty. Herm himself was out on the street and met me when I came to pick up my order. Friendly people and great food. I heard so many reviews of this place. Everyone I talked to seemed to LOVE it, but I wasn't a fan honestly. The bread was too buttery on my catfish sandwich and I didn't like the smokiness of it from it being toasted. It just didn't fit for a catfish sandwich (in my opinion). Chicken quesadilla was okay, but I'd love it if I were drunk. In other words, I could've cooked the quesadilla myself. I would possibly go back to try something else, but I won't order the quesadilla and catfish sandwich anymore. read more

The generous variety allowed me a little taste of everything : Salad - crisp, fresh, a REAL tossed salad with cucumbers, hard boiled egg, croutons, onion, tomatoes, mixed greens and a tangy vinaigrette! Turkish coffee seasoned chicken - BOOM, flavor explosion! Cooked to juicy perfection! Green beans - crisp, fresh tasting and VERY well seasoned. Coconut raisin rice - thoroughly cooked, not too coconut-y, and very savory. Just enough S&P Lemon pound cake - Holy. Crap. Amazing. The food. Here. is where I was debating on the stars. I saw so many good reviews thinking the food would be amazing. The chicken fingers, were not bad but at the same time they had only one flavor...the flavor of fried oil. There was no seasoning in the batter. I was a bit disappointed because I had high hopes that the chef would at least put pepper or salt, but natta. The chicken was also a bit dry. On to the corn bread, it was a little interesting in that there are pieces of sweet corn in the bread. It gave it a little bit of flavor. That's about all I can say about the corn bread. Lastly, the Mac and cheese. It was nothing special. Seeing as there is Alamo, Buz and Neds, and many other places that are in the same price range and style of food, the food did not compare. I order delivery to my work consistently from Big Herm's. It is quick, efficient, and the food is excellent! BHK offers southern comfort food. I normally switch between the buffalo shrimp and the buffalo chicken sandwich- their buffalo sauce is unlike any other I've had. I think they add pepper to it to give it even more of a kick. Their collard greens are hands down the best I've had in Richmond; they have so much flavor and just the right amount of heat to them. All of the menu items are decently priced for what you get. The sandwiches and baskets come with a side- you can choose from Mac and cheese, collards, sweet potato/regular fries, coleslaw, broccoli, cornbread, pasta salad, and a few others). Big Herm's also has daily specials, one including $1.00 off burgers on Wednesdays. This place is definitely worth checking out if you love good homemade comfort food! read more

One of the best catfish sandwiches I've had in a while. This spot is a narrow lunch counter right inside the usual façade of a Jackson Ward business, the menu is small but everything is made in house. You'll likely find Big Herm (you'll know big herm when you see him) running about in the kitchen or outside greeting his customers and people on the street. The portions are absolutely huge for the price, for a $1.50 I saw another customer get a stack of home made cookies that he said weighed in at about a pound. They have limited hours primarily for the downtown lunch and early dinner rush, but they do deliver. My suggestion is, get in here and give them a try. I'm glad I did. read more

Decided to give Big Herm's a try today, and boy am I happy I did! I got the Shrimp appetizer, cheesesteak sandwich, and coleslaw. I started off with the Shirmp, which was great, until I tried the homemade cocktail sauce and wow...! That was amazing. Two Thumbs up there. When I moved onto the cheesesteak I immediately saw that this was no orderinary beef. Not only was it supple and tender, but the carmelization from cooking was amazing! Totally the right/best way to cook beef. Wow...It was so good. Two Thumbs up there, too. I ended with the coleslaw, which is nice. Fresh, light, refreshing. I think it would be perfect on a BBQ sandwich, even though that's not what I got. Again, both thumbs up. While they don't have seating, they do deliver so not sure how you can get better than that! So good I had to come back and write another review. I've been ordering from Herm's for about two years now, and one thing that cannot be forgotten is consistency! I am telling you, no matter what I order or when I order it, the food is *always* delivered hot, well made, and delicious. A lot of places wax and wane with the food, the service, or both, but Herm's has never failed in the umpteen times I have ordered something. I had to write another review today because I branched out from my usual and was pleasantly surprised yet again. I typically order either the blackened chicken sandwich (amazing!) with fries, the cheeseburger (to die for!) with fries, or the blackened chicken salad (best salad I've ever had in my life- try it without onions and without dressing. You don't need it!). I've also tried the potato salad and the pound cake- both chocolate and regular. Today I was feeling frisky and got chicken tenders with "ooo-wee" sauce on the side, sweet potato fries and cornbread. O.M.F.G. I don't care how lame I sound saying that- it's the only way to describe the deliciousness in my tummy right now. The sweet potato fries straddled the line between crunchy and soft and were seasoned to perfection. I don't like sweet potato fries with a ton of sugar or cinnamon because they taste like a dessert, but with just salt and pepper it's weird. I don't know how Herm's did it, but these had sugar, salt and pepper and killed any sweet-salty-crunchy craving I might have had in one bite. The cornbread...wow. Thick, savory and sweet with a cinnamon butter that took it over the edge. I think the only cornbread I've had better than Herm's was at Deep Run Roadhouse. Finally....the chicken tenders. Some people like bready tenders, but these were a good combo of breaded and naked that I really enjoyed because they weren't too heavy. Seasoned well and juicy, I thought they were good on their own until I tried the "ooo-wee" sauce. OOO-WEE can I get a whole bottle of it to go? Simply amazing. Bottom line- they're delicious, fresh, friendly, consistent, with killer prices and super fast, hot delivery/take out. I can't say enough about Big Herm's. Big Herm was the owner of the now closed Corner Bar & Grill that was nestled on Leigh St. So I was delighted to learn that Big Herm's Kitchen was up and running so I could get a taste of what Corner Bar & Grill used to offer and I was not disappointed. He caters too, in case you are craving his wonderful foods for an event. Don't be put off by the location, inside or out, because he is located in the heart of Jackson Ward. (smart move if he plans to be open during the 2 Street Festival). It is a takeout only spot and only open from 11a-3p M-F, which is fine with me. That said, today I tried the garlic parmesan wings, mac and cheese and pasta salad. I also ordered the potato salad for later. The wings were wonderful, with that perfect crispyness on the outside and juicyness on the inside. It didn't hurt either that I got my wings for 1/2 off because it was Monday! They were tossed perfectly with a garlic parmesan butter sauce that I could not get enough of! You absolutely do not need the side of ranch they give you because the garlic parmesan is enough flavor on its own! The pasta salad was good too. It was seasoned perfectly without overpowering seasonings. Fresh herbs, fresh vegetables and perfectly cooked pasta makes this a wonderful summertime side order. The potato salad was just ok. I've had better. The mac and cheese! OMG! I am a mac and cheese connoisseur and must try mac and cheese at every restaurant I go to. The mac and cheese has that twang (is that a word) I like and just enough flavor without it being too overpowering. Yesterday I thought it would be wise to take advantage of the Monday 50% of wings special. Because of my growing hunger, I decided to order 3 helpings of wings and specifically wanted all of the wings to be Southern Fried. When I received my order, only one helping of wings was Southern Fried, the other two were BBQ. On top of getting the order wrong, the BBQ wings were doused in BBQ sauce which made for a very messy eating experience. This was my first time ordering but definitely not my last! The blackened chicken salad was super delicious and will most likely be my go to. I am really picky about chicken bc I can't stomach gristle or fatty parts of chicken very well. This was perfect. I got the hubs the southern fried wings and side of fries. Also wonderful. Today, i tried the sweet potato fries (which are actually made with cinnamon) and a side salad.
