Chicken Cobb Salad plus added shrimp with Bleu Cheese. It was hefty and so satisfying. I had two meals out of it.
    Sue F.

Wow. My husband picked me up a chicken Cobb salad from this place and it did not disappoint. It was so fresh and the chicken was perfectly seasoned. The croutons are house made garlic bread croutons not crappy boxed ones. Those are so dry and gross. I'm always worried about getting a chicken breast that is bland and unseasoned so I opted to add shrimp to it. "Just in case". Both chicken and shrimp were incredible and the salad was so very hearty and fresh. On a Monday day too. Everyone knows you dont order out on Mondays. It passed the Monday test. I'd order here again and again.

Not much parking for this carryout joint. Asked for ketchup, none given. Asked what sauce for the seafood. Given none. Everything dry, no condiments given that was asked for or promised. 2 stars because taste of food. If it wasnt for that, it would be 1 star, preferably 0 stars. Called order in. Quoted 20-25 minutes. Food was 45 minutes. Barely a thank you for waiting in the rain. Will not return.

Big Herm's has been on my list to try for a while. So glad I did!! First, the pricing is pretty good. I preferred for delivery -- they are making sure the bags have a no tamper sticker which is great for peace of mind. The food was delish! The shrimp was flavored just right, and crispy. I like the baked Mac & cheese, thought it was a little heavy on seasoning for me. And the mashed sweet potatoes were so good, nice and smooth! The cornbread was the perfect amount of sweet and savory. Let's talk about the cookies. My assumption when buying it was it's either be 1 cookie or a few small cookies. I was shocked when I opened the bag -- they're huge! And they were SO good. Perfect amount of nuts and chocolate chips. Big Herm's is now on my top RVA soul food places.

I like Big Herm's every now and again, but it's definitely heavy. Last time it took me literal hours to finish my sandwich. I had ordered the "chicken cutlet," which was cut up chicken tenders...not a chicken cutlet at all. A chicken cutlet should be thin. Hopefully eventually they'll realize that and either modify the sandwich or update their menu to state "chicken cutlet sandwich." Nonetheless, it's good. Just a heads up that it's not what you might think. The mac and cheese side is super tasty but a little greasy. Delivery arrived on time. Prices are reasonable.

MY GO-TO'S!!!! Roasted corn and asparagus salad; Big Herm's Wing Basket

A Jackson Ward staple! TLDR: ORDER FROM THEM RIGHT NOW!!!!! Big Herm's is absolutely breathtaking. My go to order is the ROASTED CORN AND ASPARAGUS SALAD and the BIG HERM'S WING BASKET. The blackened chicken is exactly how it should be - blackened and DELICIOUS. It is a good addition to the greens, corn, and asparagus. The sweet and spicy vinaigrette they have is the kick I have been missing in my salads. You can't miss out on that dressing. I have ordered the wing's basket 4 times on EatStreet and every time it has been delivered to me, the wings remain super crispy; I just LOVE the way Big Herm's wings are - fried to perfection and the batter on it is just a classic!! The cornbread has always been consistently amazing. I always order sweet potato fries on the side which they coat with cinnamon and makes me heart/stomach so so happy. Please don't miss out on this Jackson Ward staple. You need Big Herm's in your life.

This is one of my new favorite spots! 1. Their cornbread is one of the best I've ever had - moist, sweet, with actual corn! 2. They give you a solid amount of food too and it's true comfort food. Check out their website for their weekday deals - like $5 wings on Mondays :) Also the sweet potato fries are so well seasoned. Just heads up though that in the to-go box they may get a little soggy along the way

Big Herm's Kitchen was delicious and ready for pickup right on time! We ordered chicken tenders for the kids - juicy and fried just right - and fried seafood for my husband and I: oysters, shrimp and catfish. Everything was fried perfectly with fresh, homemade sauces. And the cornbread! Big Herm's cornbread is everything - sweet, savory, oh so good!

I wish I could give you more stars! Everything and I mean everything was amazing! Thank you! I need you to spill the secret about that sauce on the wings! If you want some good food by people who know good food, stop at Big Herm's. #howwefight #webuyblack

I love soul food but like the best of any cuisine, it's usually better served through your grandma. For that reason I'm generally skeptical but Big Herm's is the real deal. First thing to notice as you step inside is there's no seating area outside of a few chairs you can sit in while you wait for your food to be ready. If you're put off, don't be, it's a good sign. The menu is pretty simple. Some sandwiches, wings, and some baskets. Word to the wise, if you're getting a basket have someone to split it with. Soul food isn't a snack, it's not even a meal, it's a feast that will require a nap soon after. And Big Herm's is no different, you're going to get the itis and you're going to need a pillow. My personal favorite is the seafood combo basket (catfish, oysters, and shrimp) and for only $12 dollars you really aren't finding a better deal anywhere. Pair your order with some collards, mac n cheese, and yams for the best experience. I knocked off a star because the cornbread just wasn't for me. It was cold and hard and after the delicious meal I was just let down. Don't let that stop you from visiting thought because the food is amazing.

Looking for a quick bit to eat while working downtown and stumbled into Big Herns. Ive heard about this place and seen pics of the food via social media but never had the opportunity to try it. The restaurant is TAKE OUT only and they are only open on the WEEKDAYs. When I came to order thankfully the line wasn't long and we got our food within 10-15 min which I feel is standard. They have a little picnic table to wait which happens to be available but if your on the go I would definitely call ahead and pick up. I believe they also have grubhub service for delivery as well. I was with my coworker and she got the catfish bites with sweet potato fries, cornbread, and coleslaw. The fish was cooked perfectly and not oily at all but light and fluffy. The sweet potato fires were hand down addicting, I couldn't stop stealing her fries . I liked that they weren't too sweet and they were perfectly cooked, even the cornbread had actual bits of corn in it topped with a cinnamon glaze. I got the blanked chicken sandwich which came with bacon and caramelized onions . The chicken was juicy and my bacon was crispy. The only I thing I would change is the bread, which was kinda soggy and couldn't hold together all deliciousness of my sandwich. The mac& cheese sooooo cheesy and deff baked about not box made. Shout out to the staff at Big Herns. I had an issue with my meal and cashier was quick to fix the situation plus she was really nice. Bonus I got some free cookies for the inconvenience and they were really good (chocolate cinnamon pecan). I Will definitely be back to try the shrimp salad, all the pics look so good and most likely call ahead.

Garlic parmesan wings, Mac and cheese and cornbread.

First time here and I will be back! Ordered the wing basket (garlic parmesan)with Mac and cheese. The basket comes with your choice of a side and corn bread. The wings were seasoned very nicely, the chicken was juicy and had a slight crunch on the outside. The Mac and cheese was good, the corn bread.. the corn bread.. the corn bread.. it was sweet and cake like, fluffy and filling. I ordered on a Thursday which means 1/2 off desserts, so I ordered a piece of sweet potato pie. Which was tasty, like everything else. Overall I was very satisfied. This is a takeout or delivery only spot not a restaurant.

I everything is good here. The staff is super friendly and kind. Made me feel like home. Didn't rush me to order and had short discussions for recommendations. Hidden Gem although it's not really hidden --THEY KNOW THE COUNT!

    House salad with fried oysters
    Chandler S.

I LOVE the food here! The House salad with fried oysters is my go to meal! The oysters are seasoned amd the ranch just sets it off! There is also a grilled oyster option. I don't give them 5 stars because I do notice a decline in the customer service when Big Herm isnt there himself. But the food is so good I still go, I just place my order through digital options so I just have to tell them my name and go on about my day. The bread pudding is great as well.

We were surprised by the size of the restaurant when we walked in. It seems smaller from the outside; not that it was huge, just deceiving. It reminded me of a homey Jason's Deli (IYKYK). The woman at the counter was helpful and kind. We had a few questions about some items on the menu, and she asked the kitchen staff anything that she didn't know offhand. We decided on the fried cauliflower for an appetizer; it was monstrously huge, and much more flavorful than I expected. The spices and textures on the plate added a lot to the dish's overall essence. I ordered the Rachel for an entree, and my partner ordered the Sharona. I subbed the chips for a side salad. The salad was tangy or tart, almost bitter. I didn't mind; I thought it was quite good. It is a lot of acidity if you are not expecting it. The Rachel was fantastic, except that the coleslaw had some onion bits mixed in. We are not onion fans in this household. Ha The Sharona would have been a better choice, as I much prefer pickles to oniony coleslaw. My partner said she really liked hers. We had half a sandwich each for leftovers the next day, and shared the leftover chips, since I finished off my salad the night before. The sandwiches heated up exquisitely in the oven at 325°F for 15 minutes. I felt that Susie's is a definite hidden gem, and I can recommend it to anyone who likes a well-made sandwich. I will be back to sample more of the menu and report back my findings at a future date.

It was a weekday after work. I went to my homegirl's house because I missed her birthday I offered to take her out someplace nice. She said no way man and immediately said we were going to this sandwich shop. This was the only thing she wanted. So we were gonna veg out on her couch. Have a couple cocktails and whatever else and watch something on TV. And her new couch is the bees knees. For me, the sandwich was perfect. The bread was beautiful and crusty. I was afraid it was going to be toasted and too crusty, and I'd be fighting to bite it and my sandwich guts spilling out while cutting up my gums and the roof of my mouth like it's Captain crunch or something.. BUT NO! It was PERFECT to bite through. They load you up with the meat they're not stingy. And the sauces... BABY! The aïoli was fantastic. My only beef is that horseradish aioli needed a little bit more of a kick, but that's a personal problem. My friend got the chicken Caesar and I see why it's popular. It is so garlicky and delicious. Even better, one sandwich was plenty for both of us. Generous portion, incredible flavor, and every bite was worth whatever guilt I was supposed to feel afterward. The menu is oriented around philly cheesesteaks and variations. I ordered the chicken philly, which was large enough to make two lunches (I brought half home.) The flavor was decent, with seasoned or marinated chicken chunks and veggies & cheese on a sturdy roll. It came with a decent serving of chips. We were served a juice glass of room temp water on arrival and no drink order was taken. Negatives were related to pacing. It took a lot of time for the food to come out. We were pushed to eat even half of our sandwiches within the hour my dining partner had for lunch. The server did not check back after dropping the plates, which could have been an issue if we needed more water. This is a decent place to grab a sandwich or a drink if you have the time or live in the neighborhood.
