Solid beef combo. Better than the ratings would lead you to believe. If you like Italian beefs and haven't tried it I would give it a shot.

I lived across the street from here for the past few years. After first opening, they were awesome, but sadly have declined. The hot dogs are still decent. The Italian beef is, meh. Half the time, the fries are burnt or crispy. Not too long ago they started serving gyros. My family was thinking, "FINALLY!". The gyros here are BAD! Very little amount of meat, not enough sauce and tasted bland. Too bad we didn't find this out until we got the food home. I now make the drive to SAMMIES in Grayslake. read more

Been wanting to try this place for months and we finally got there and boy were we all disappointed. $40 for a family of 4.... got 2 burger meals, gyro meal and a hot dog meal. The price was the first problem. Ridiculously overpriced and would have been better off going to a restaurant. We like small businesses so we decided to give the food a try. The pizza burger was disgusting. The fresh cut fries weren't thoroughly cooked. The gyro meet wasn't fresh and were those short thin gross strips that you can buy in the frozen section at the market. The ceiling was leaking in several different spots.... including my eldest daughters head. To top it off my husband and youngest daughter weren't even done eating and we, along with another customer who wasn't finished, were actually kicked out! I've never experienced anything like this. I've been going to Big Jacks since it opened. It is very convenient and usually pretty good. I went in on Sunday to see that they added gyros to their menu, so I ordered one. I love a good gyro, but this wasn't one. Instead of the good old fashioned skewer, this gyro meat was frozen. The meat was pre-sliced and very skinny. I got about 6 pieces on a pita and that was it. When the young lady that worked there asked me how my sandwich was, I told her it didn't taste bad, but certainly wasn't a good gyro. I pointed at my basket and then at the picture of the delicious looking sandwich on the wall. It wasn't even close. Not a good representation of the final product. We live in the surrounding neighborhood & decided to give big jacks a shot. Never been there before, we ordered our food to go..the service ordering our food was not very pleasant at all. Upon getting home we discovered our meals were not what we ordered. For spending almost $30 I want my food to be right. We called, & the manager whom we spoke to was rude, and defensive. Had a cheeseburger and fries. The burger was big and flavorful. The fries were fresh cut fries which I was excited about but they weren't as good as fodraks in libertyville. Nonetheless the fries hit the spot and so did the burger. The only negative thing about this place was it took a good 15 min (or more) of waiting for my order, which is way too long for fast food. They said it takes a while because they're making things to order but so does ninos gyros and fodraks and I've never waited 15 min for my order at those places (even when they were super busy). read more

I went there tonight for the first time and got the beef. My mother got the tamale pie. I did not realize they were closing in ten minutes but the woman behind the register was not very friendly. When our order came, they forgot our fries but we decided not to say anything since they were closing. I asked for the beef to be double dipped because I like it with a lot of juice and my sandwich was barely dipped and dry in some places. I was disappointed and I had such high hopes. It looks like such a cute place and the other reviews made it sound great. I might try it one more time and not get the beef but based on this visit I was quite disappointed. read more

Way over priced. 11 dollars for a triple cheese burger. It best be ground sirloin. The forgot an item in my order. I got home before I found that out. Had to go back and get it. I ordered a Chicago style steak sandwich. It was made with chopped roast beef. I grew up near Berwyn. A steak sandwich is made with round steak. Not chopped italian beef. Their chili cheese fries were soggy and cost 4 dollars. Overall I spend 25 dollars for a Tamali Boat, Hotdog and fries, A steak sandwich and chili cheese fries. I have loved Big Jacks since they opened. It was by far the best choice for Italian Beef in the area. However, today we picked up a big big jack to split, and after i had completed my half of the sandwich, my wife started on her half and found a maggot in the first bite! This is a great place to have a Hot Dog or a Beef. My boys and I have become regulars and everyone knows them. Herb and Brandon are always quick with a hello and ask them what's new. Still the best beef in the area but it's been a hit or miss lately. Sometimes there isn't much meat on the sandwich other times I asked for it dipped and its dry. But every time I go there there are new people behind the counter. This last trip the fries were way over salted. They have also been watering down the ketchup. This may not seem like a big deal. But I don't think ketchup prices have gone up. You can get a 10# can at sams club for $3. read more

As I drove up to this place I heard the playing of Frank Sinatra sounding from the speakers, and I couldn't wait to see what Chicago feel this place had in store. I walked in and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff at the register. The menu captured a lot of great Italian foods along with a lot of american cuisines. I was flustered by the large selection, but I had to go with the 2 hot dog combo that is advertised around the building. I opened up the wax paper to see an array of fresh cut fries that were delicious along with the dog that was dressed down the chicago way. The bun did get a bit smooshed, but it was inevitable with the huge stack of fries that came with it. If you are with the kids stop by for lunch or dinner! Give this place a try! read more

Everything I've tried on the menu is excellent. The dining area inside is pretty small so I'd recommend taking the food to go. If the food gets cold on the way home, you can microwave it back to delicious in very little time. Also, they now take debit/credit cards ($10 min. order). read more

I was very disapointed with my visit at this establishment. I dont mind waiting for home cooked food that is fresh, but after waiting 10 minutes, my hamburger was burnt and they put so much maynaise and mustard on it that it was dripping. Im pretty sure the burger was burnt because the "boys" working there were so busy swearing and talking bad about their wives or girlfriends they werent paying attentin. I went into Big Jacks, Round Lake, IL and Purchased a ChiTown cheesesteak sandwich. The beef was the salty tasting beef I ever had, even my girlfriend said it was Horrible, We took 2 bites (one each) and neither of us could stand anymore. It comes on a six inch bun, the bread was soggy and there was only one thin slice of provolone on the sandwich. For $7.05 it was a rip off. If your are looking for a good beef sandwich DO NOT COME HERE. I stopped off the big jacks for a late lunch. I had several other options, but I thought I would give this place a try, as I passed it many times in the past. I always said to myself that I would stop in when I had time as it looks like one of those cool corner hot dog joints. Well today I stopped in and boy was I disappointed. First off, there were some old fries sitting in a bin that they just added new fries to essentially mixing the old with the new. I ordered two dogs with fries everything on the dogs. I said down to my seat eagerly waiting to Dig in to my hot dogs and fries. The first dog was not bad, although the Bun was hard and stale on the hinge side. I also noticed that there were no poppy seeds on the bun. The tomato was a pale orange and nothing else about the dog stood out as being very good. The fries were extremely greasy completely soaked in oil and fell apart upon picking up .The second dog at least did not have a hard bun. I feel it was because it was soaking up the grease from the fries while I ate the first one. After finishing most of the second dog and hardly touching any of the other fries I asked the counterperson why they didn't use poppyseed buns. She told me that some people are allergic to poppyseeds. I am sending this using my iPhone so I won't Go into much more detail. But I will say I will never be back again. There are too many good hot dog stands to give this place the time of day. You cannot make a Chicago hot dog without a steamed poppy seed bun!! And you damn well better have fresh tomatoes!! read more

The food at Jack's is "okay". I agree with others that the service is absolutely terrible and they lost me as a customer on Thursday night. I have waited in line there before and they're not kidding when they tell you you're going to have a wait ahead of you. For that reason I called in my order ahead. When I arrived I could see several burgers that were halfway done on the grill. A few minutes go by and the owner walks in and states the burgers are his, another 4-5 mins later he walks out with a bag stuffed with food. I look over at the grill and there is a brand new patty just put on it. After another 4-5 min wait as my last burger is finished, the teenage cook says "oh fries" and drops a basket on raw potatoes in the grease. Another 4-5 min wait for those. Waiting now 20 minutes for an order I called in. I don't blame the teenager although he did look like he could give a rats ass, but the owner? Sweeping in and taking all of the food with customers waiting? Who does that? Informing customers that because you're food is "so good" you're going to have a little wait is fine, it does not however give you license to treat them like crap, clearly communicate that AND expect to keep them coming back. I've had other negative experiences at this place but that was the final straw. Sammy's will get my business for this type of cuisine going forward. read more
