I was in town for a family reunion and had to stop by. It's a Flint staple and always brings back a lot of nostalgia. I ordered the 6-inch steak and cheese combo with banana peppers & side of red sauce. The cashier was a bit rude but the service was fast, which I appreciated. The only downside was that my sandwich was lukewarm, almost cold when given. I didn't like that I had to reheat it, but overall 3.5ish/5. read more

Have you ever had someone recommend a thing to you so confidently, so glowingly, so eloquently--that when you actually try the thing, you vow to never trust that person again? That's Big John. I was in Flint and asked for a lunch recommendation because it was my first time here and was directed to Big John. I thought to myself, be sure not to judge it by Philly cheesesteak standards because 1. We aren't in Philly and 2. Big John is smart enough not to call it a Philly cheesesteak, but a "steak and onion sandwich." My now ex-friend, who I will never speak to again, also recommended the red sauce. So, I ordered a steak and onion with red sauce. The first red flag is that they give you the option to double the meat and pay more. But if a sandwich was fully loaded to begin with, how could the meat be doubled? Then the meat would fall off everywhere. Well, it's not fully loaded. The regular size doesn't have enough meat. Or onions. Or cheese. I guess my advice is to double it aka make it into a regular sandwich anywhere else. I thought the red sauce was going to be something special, unique, or spicy. I'm so mad about this experience still. So mad that I'm remembering 3 days later to leave this review. This steak n onion sandwich was nothing to write home about. I got steak, mushroom, onion, and peppers... they forgot the peppers... that's literally what they advertise.. the peppers. How do you forget to add the peppers...? Idk. Maybe someone working in there was having a bad day, and that is okay. I'm not that mad about it. But then I opened up my sub and it was just all mushrooms... like big nasty rubber mushrooms. Not happy. I was so hungry and excited to eat this cheese steak, terribly disappointed. Lastly, a note for the lady in the drive thru window. I said "Hi, how are you?".. don't just say "$25.76". Be a decent human and respond. When I left I of course said "thank you, have a great day" and she just closed the window on me. Not cool. This is the spot that I most miss when I am not home in Flint! I grew up on Big John. My mom, kids and I stopped by here on our way home from the store. They had a few folks inside, but the line moved very quickly. I ordered the Steak and Onion with mushrooms and banana peppers. The kids ordered the same without the mushrooms. Absolutely delicious and well worth it. Because I only can get this when I go home, I will surely be back as I always do on my trip home! read more

I've seen the signs off the freeway and thought I'd give it a shot. The place is clean and it all look relativity new. I tried the original with sauce. The bread was soft and plenty of meat. It was really good and service was quick. I would stop here again for sure. I don't knew whether to comment on the service or not. I was fast service, but I found it a little rude. Big John may need to teach hellos and goodbyes. I won't hold back stars for it,because it's basically fast food, being that the food tasted good I can't complain. read more

I've been going Up North for years and always saw billboards For Big John Steak and Onion (usually near the billboard for Guns galore with the dog that looks like it's shooting a rifle). Finally had the chance to have lunch here. I was impressed. The menu isn't large - and let's be honest failure to not get a steal and onion is an insult to the entire name. The meat was good, the bun was filled and the red sauce was delicious. I can't even describe what it was. It was sauce that was red, but not hot sauce. The service wasn't that great and that's the reason for only 4 stars. One guy was hard to understand because he mumbled and he wasn't very quick. I'm a banana pepper fanatic. I can sit down and eat a whole jar of banana peppers in one sitting, no joking. I do that, and often. Here in Michigan I always drive by a big billboard that says Big John steak and onion and on that billboard is a steak onion sub with banana peppers on top of it and I always wanted to give it a go. I live in AZ now but I'm in MI visiting family and I need to finally try Big John steak and onion with banana peppers. I got the Super Steak onion mushroom and cheese with banana peppers. I thought of getting extra banana peppers but I just went with the normal amount. Sitting passenger seat heading to my Grandmas... WHERE TF ARE MY BANANA PEPPERS. None. No goddamn banana peppers. Can't beat it the original!!! Always try to get to one of them when I'm in the Flint area. The sauce they use is very unique but amazing. Add that with a fresh sub bun, sirloin, onions, cheese, and banana peppers....you can't go wrong. read more

This place came VERY highly recommended to me - so when I found myself in the Flint area, I decided to give them a try. The verdict? They were good. Not amazing, but solid. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the sauce was similar to Arby's sauce. Too expensive! These sandwiches are too expensive for the quality of sandwich provided. I made the mistake of visiting during a Non-busy time of day. They used left over meat and did not make my sandwich using freshly cooked steak. Instead, they used meat that had already been cooked and had been sitting for a while. As a result, the sandwich was just so-so and cost over $8! For the quality of meat provided they need to lower the prices of these over priced sandwiches. Big John's used to be a lot better in the early 80s. I will not be going back! read more
