We liked it so much we came back again the following day to grab another sandwich to eat while we were wine tasting. The store is a full market plus a big selection of pre-made and To Go foods. And they have a great wine selection! Lots of great locals finds there. Mind you... they don't carry Everyone and Everything but they have a lot of the local wineries there at reasonable prices. If you need to put together snacks (aka fancy Chacuterie) for a party, this is the place to go. It's better than Whole Paycheck (Foods) IMO and the prices are better. Gorgeous market with huge selection of nice products! This Grocer was so nice! They have produce, meats, a huge wine and beer selection. We also wanted pasta and they have a large variety of high quality pasta. We went to a winery and we were recommended to come here from a local and it's definitely worth stopping by if you are staying in an Airbnb or a great place to find items for a charcuterie board or pretty picnic if you're doing one at the vineyard. We wished we had stopped by sooner in our trip! If comparing to LA grocers, this would be similar to Bristol Farms, but they had a wide variety of prices for their goods so that they had reasonably priced, nice items as well. We also saw cute stationary items in their gift wrap, gift bag and cards area. read more

SCW and I stopped into Big John's market after it was recommended from a wine tasting experience. The store itself is larger than it looks like from the outside. When you get inside you'll see the varieties of cheeses available which is extensive. A little further in they have a decent sized salad bar with fresh looking veggies and a few prepared salads. There is also a warm items bar in that area. The deli is large and gets quite busy during lunch time. They have a few curated sandwiches on the overhead board or you can make your own. Take a number first if they are busy and order when called. They are pretty quick as our sandwiches were ready in about 5 minutes. I had a giorgi park (vegetarian) sandwich which came as a panini with great flavors and fresh ingredients. SCW had the veggie sandwich which was also really tasty. They have a burrito and pizza line as well. I got a vegetarian super burrito bowl which you can customize. Similar process as chipotle style. Everything looked fresh vibrant. The wine selection is varied and has some appealing options. The middle portion of the store is similarly set up like most grocery stores, cans, waters, cleaning products etc. The produce section is nice with good variety as well. You can find tofu and fake meats near the produce section. The store is clean and well lit. They have tables outside if you choose to eat there. The employees are very friendly and helpful. Extremely disappointed with Big John's. My friend was a loyal, regular customer of this grocery store and had her vehicle towed after being parked in the parking lot for less than two hours. I completely understand that businesses need to have parking policies in place, but towing a customer's vehicle after such a short amount of time feels incredibly excessive, especially considering that she was a loyal customer who regularly supported the store. What is most disappointing is the lack of consideration shown to someone who had been a customer. There are certainly more reasonable ways to address a parking issue than immediately having someone's vehicle towed and leaving them with a costly bill. After this experience, I will personally think twice about supporting a business that treats its customers this way. I hope Big John's takes a closer look at how these situations are handled in the future. read more

We love their cheese section, which immediately greets you upon arrival. Need help? Just ask! Looking for local cheeses? They offer many! They have a mini Cousteau Bakery inside. My first time was a trip to the deli where they have tons of tasty creations to choose from, quality meats and fancy fromage. The second visit I was feeling like a salad and paid visit to their salad bar. Here you'll find the traditional staples, salad choices and toppings abound. They've also put together several pasta salad options - too many to make a quick decision. My plans to have a salad of my own creation was derailed when I saw all the options in the hot bar behind me. Ham and cheese risotto patties, colorful steamed vegetables, roasted fingerling potatoes, fried chicken, jalapeño poppers, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and gravy, baby back ribs, battered fried cod, and chicken confit were just some of the items. They also have a soup station, a burrito bar and pizza option that I've yet to explore. The deli wait time was quick despite it being very busy and I've not yet had to wait in line to check out. I also appreciate being able to purchase, specially foods like imported French butter. When I'm in Healdsburg I will often stop in for a snack, or to buy that special French butter to pair with some nice Cousteau bread and local wine. While the price point for some common items are a bit higher than a typical large retailer, Big Johns does provide a great selection of specialty items and I think this is the draw for locals and those staying the weekend in a vacation rental. read more

I'm glad the hot food section and salad bar are open now after a long closure due to the pandemic. On one side of the hot food section is the usual roast chicken, pork ribs, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, gravy, fried chicken thighs and drums, and chicken strips (breast meat). On the other side are cuisines that change daily from Mexican, Chinese, and other cuisines. Today's selection was Mexican food. There were carnitas, Mexican meatballs, chicken enchiladas, chicken pozole, beef birria, chili rellenos, roasted vegetables, refried beans, and Mexican rice. I've had the beef birria before and it was not "fall apart" tender. So today I got the chicken pozole, Mexican meatballs, refried beans, and Mexican rice. The chicken was fall apart tender and the meatball was perfectly cooked. Beans and rice were good but could have been spicier. I also got a side of spinach salad from the salad bar. I enjoy the different types of cuisine they offer each day of the week and of course occasionally, I will get the fried chicken thighs with mac & cheese. If you haven't tried the hot food and salad bar, it's a change from having to cook. The best times to go are around 11am and 4pm when the food is fresh and not dried out or picked over. read more

You know you are in a bougie grocery store when there is fancy artwork/sculpture at the entrance. That fact was further confirmed with the decor throughout the spacious store. But we didn't come here for groceries. We came here for their sandwiches. They were indeed as tasty as everyone said. Highly recommend phoning in your order instead of ordering in person. If you phone it in, you can just walk up to the counter and pick up your sandwich from the marker basket. If you order in person, you may end up waiting in line for at least 20 mins. read more
