We searched for a burger joint with good reviews... we found one! Shoutout to our local community heroes at this venue! The staff is friendly, welcoming, and efficient. The food is great! Giant burgers, hotdogs, fries, and crunchy onion rings! The burgers has a nice grilled flavor and nice texture. Fresh white onions, tomatoes, lettuce! Very satisfying and hit the spot! The hot dogs were thick like a polish sausage. Very tasty. The fries are savory and beautifully cut. I love that the skin is still on the potatoes and makes it taste like potato skins that are usually served as an appetizer. Onions rings are crispy golden brown. The meal was a hit! read more

Driving home on 95, this was one of the highest rated places near where we were. We decided to stop and check it out. We went in and asked if we could sit outside. Definitely a hole in the wall joint. Just a few tables and a large picnic table outside. Ashtrays and all. Definitely an 80s vibe. We ordered the 1/3 lb cheeseburger and the 1/3 lb bacon cheeseburger. We both got a side of fries bc they ran out of onion rings. Burger was decent, but nothing special. Definitely well done, not a ton of flavor. Wish there had been more cheese on the burger. The fries were really good though. Seemed fresh and nice and hot and well salted. Glad we tried. read more

Stopped in for lunch on our way north. Most of the reviews I could find of this place had made it seem amazing. First, I'm down with any place that supports veterans and this place, by the looks of it, definitely has a heart for Veterans. Second, the prices on the menu are very affordable when you consider what else is available in the not so immediate area. Chain food has gotten very pricey. So with the great posted reviews, the respect for Vets and the price, we gave it a shot. Wish I could say it was better but I will start by saying the young lady taking everyone's orders and waiting tables and running the cash register was very sweet. The food, good and mediocre. My chicken tender basket was half good. The chicken half. The fries were pulled out of a bucket of water and were very soggy but also looked burnt. Weird combo. My husband had the grilled cheese served on Texas toast and a side of onion rings. The grilled cheese looked burnt, tasted Smokey and the cheese wasn't melted. The onion rings were HUGE, which some people like but they were also greasy- not a great combo. Overall, I think this business if doing the best it can to survive in an out of the way location. Stopped here while on our way down Raleigh. I have been to the Petersburg area several times for basketball coverage, but never have seen this spot. To be honest we were on our way to Roma (which was closed on a Friday night - all you need to know about a business) and saw this deciding to double back. In terms of decor - TOTAL GREASY SPOON, DIVEY place - and nothing wrong with that at all. Burger stand, bar seating, dollar bills on the wall with notes, etc. We ordered cheese curds to start which came with ranch. These were standard - nothing too crazy one way or the other that would move the needle. For my burger I went with a 1/2lb cheeseburger (that's right) and got it with LTO and the three major condiments. Would have liked to see a little more cheese with a 1/2lb boy, but the meat was seasoned and the bun was fresh. Our waitress was attentive, and from what I could glean in the place was the waitresses were Large Michael's daughter and wife? Anyway - family place, a lot of locals, and the service was nice. Really tasty burgers and the hand-cut fries were excellent. Stopped on our way to Elizabeth City, NC, and was super glad we did. The onion rings were likewise awesome. This place was highly rated by a poster somewhere. Rave review so we just had to have the best burger. We almost blew by the place cause it's so small. Like walking into 1950's.. tiny dining area and counter seating. The waitress gave us the history of the building and was so engaging. I got the burger as did my companion. He got water- fresh from the faucet like we did in the old days. I could watch the cook prepare my burger and picked a tip or two. Great burgers, friendly service and fair prices. Every time I'm in town I make at least a couple visits here to enjoy their food and certainly tell people about them. The owner and staff are very attentive and friendly (once, the owner made a very delicious homemade cucumber salad I was lucky enough to sample), their burgers have been consistently good since I started coming here in 2017 and every person I told that came here has had great things to say about them. read more

While traveling from NC to MD, we needed a lunch break and other Yelpers got us here. It's just a little off I-95, but the reviews convinced us to take the small detour. I think everyone was glad we did, although my grandson didn't eat his burger (but that's another story). I honestly think the sheer size of the burger, and the enormous amount of fries piled on his plate, kind of took my grandson's appetite away. He is a picky eater and although he said both tasted good, he couldn't manage more than a few bites of each. My granddaughter ordered a corndog and mac and cheese. After one bite of the mac and cheese, she barely touched the dog! She said it was the best mac and cheese of her life (she's almost 7) ;) I had a salad with fried chicken, and since it was coming in a flour tortilla bowl, I didn't expect it to be so big. The greens and veggies in the salad were fresh and crispy, and if I had one wish I think it is that I had gotten grilled chicken instead of fried. It didn't really hold up as well to the rest of the salad, as I thought it would. But it was all delicious! I can't recall what my daughter and SIL had, but I believe both pronounced theirs delicious. I also can't comment on the cost, since they treated me, although I feel there was a comment that it wasn't as affordable as some Yelpers made it sound. ::shrugs:: Each time we make this trip, we try a new place along the way, but honestly I don't think we'd come back here regardless. I came. I ate a cheeseburger. I am going back for another one... This is the best burger that I've ever eaten! Period! Bar None! It took me 45 minutes to make it home to eat it. It was cold and it was still amazing. Do you have an idea how good a burger has to be to be cold and still be amazing. This was other worldly amazing. The beef was fresh. The tomatoes were fresh. There was just enough mayo and Mustard. The cheese was melted perfectly. The burger was seasoned so well. The bun fit the burger so well that you'd have thought that they measured them together before they were made. The fries were also unbelievable! They were cold too which is my fault due to my long drive. I didn't even have ketchup and they were still so good. The were slightly crisp but not soggy in any way. I was literally in shock with how well this meal was. I'm going back! That is the best compliment that I can give. My review on them: Big Mike's Burger Shoppe in Petersburg (Off 460) I should've read the reviews that were 1 star prior to coming here. I will start by saying I did like my burger, despite the need for salt and pepper. The fries seemed as if they were either re-cooked or cooked in old grease. You're familiar with this if you've seen fries that are that dark tint. These were far from fresh. I asked for chili and cheese. The cheese was fine. The chili? You know how when you make chili at home and it sits for a bit and gets that crusty layer across the top? Yeah I spent money for that. Most importantly here is the vibe. You know when you're not wanted somewhere. We live in America so it goes without saying my color VS the patrons. While the waitress wasn't rude, or so I thought initially, her attitude was very nonchalant and flippant compared to the cheery "How're yall doing?!" To the elderly couple that came in after us. The last straw was hearing the same elderly person comment "You know the food is going to be good when it's served by your own kind." followed by a giggle and a "I know right." from the waitress. Ahhh, Big Mike's. I have been seeing this on my frequent slogs up/down I-95 so today was the day I tried out the spot. I always love local restaurants due to their local flair and loyalty; and the food is usually great. Big Mike's has all of that. The waitstaff are a joy to talk to, the interior space screams local with all of the money taped on the walls, and they enjoy what they do. I of course had the cheese burger and fresh cut fries. My expectations were high from previous Yelpers and Big Mike's came close, but ultimately was just OK. The burger is flattopped grilled which is perfectly fine, but I wished it had more of a crust, which adds that great flavor; you know what I'm talking about. Handcut fries also a plus wherever you can find, but they were a little soggy and needed some more crispy time in the fryer. Big Mike's was close to a real winner, but this time, just OK. Was invited to eat here with classmates who have been here before. Arrived a little behind schedule and got to see how huge their burgers are. I recently given up red meat so I tried the grilled chicken club sandwich. Yes it had bacon ham and grilled chicken with the works. The food and french fries were amazing for the price I paid. I gave four stars because the seating arrangement inside is not very adequate and the advertisement very minimal as you would have missed it if not looking for it. But too much of avail they have outstanding service, outstanding food, and outstanding prices. A must try read more
