Well, I'll give it to them for consistency. Consistently bad. There was something wrong with over half of our party of eight's entrees. - Pork chop: According to our server, this was an "excellent choice". It was HELLA DRY (see pic)! Like, hard-to-swallow-dry. The carrots and the potatoes were good though. The poor pig died in vain. - Spaghetti di mare: Oily! - Steak: Ordered medium, came out super rare. Mom was just going to eat it, insisting it was fine, but then our server came over and took one look and said "yeah that's definitely rare". At our server's insistence, it was sent back and it was more medium, but it was tough. Not much flavor either. - Fish and chips: Also overcooked and tough. - Shrimp: Same, overcooked and tough and the pesto pasta also lacked flavor. - Ribs and tagliatelle were "ok". The only passable entrees, but far from being spectacular. You may ask why we didn't complain to our server. Well, first, we never send entrees back. Second, how do you even send five out of eight entrees back?! After my mom's steak returned medium and it still wasn't good, why bother? Our starters: buffalo wings, fried calamari and truffle fries were decent enough, but after that it was all downhill. We all passed on dessert. I don't think we've ever had a family dinner where we all complained so much. Looking at the most recent reviews, it looks like our experience is not an isolated one. The prices are not justified for what it was. $51 for a steak, $42 for a pork chop. $15 for a mocktail is steep even for a fancy restaurant, which Townhouse is not. I am not opposed to forking over money for food and drink, if it's good. Almost $500 including tax and tip down the drain. The service was fine. Went on a Thursday evening. Had a reservation but noticed there were plenty of tables available upon walking in. The waitress was pleasant and welcoming. We were seated within a few minutes. Loved the adjacent patio next to the main dining area. The main room has a very cozy feel. I was a bit disappointed that there was no live jazz as it was noted on Yelp in the description of the restaurant. Either way, it was nice still a very nice time. I ordered a mule which was good but just tasted a bit different than what I was use to. I ordered the pork chop which was a thick cut and tasty. However upon driving home i got a really bad stomach ache. I got sick as soon as I got home. I would return but probably not have the pork chop time next. read more

I last reviewed Townhouse in 2005. I'm happy to report that it's as good as ever. These days I usually dine here with my husband and our daughter. She loves the spaghetti and we're all over the map. Recently we shared the chicken picatta and the burger and enjoyed both quite a bit. We miss the smoked chicken pasta and always rejoice when it returns as a special. Shrimp and grits excellent if you come for brunch! The hostess is always kind. I always make my reservations on Yelp so they know we're coming. I don't go for business dinners that much these days, but this time we had a colleague fly all the way over from Thailand to meet with us so I definitely volunteered. Plus, it is an opportunity to Yelp a new restaurant for me - Townhouse in Emeryville. Townhouse indeed looks like a old, rustic house but actually has a good-sized patio and indoor dining room. Dark, relaxing vibes with Gypsy Jazz music. The menu has elements of Italian and New American, so pasta, seafood, and grilled meats. They seem to have plenty of street parking available. There is a private lot but note its pretty small and only goes in one direction, so careful backing out. It was a school night so I got the Don't Get Smashed cocktail with non-alcoholic whiskey. Huh? If you try to distill whiskey and water you reach an azeotrope, so you can't get 100% water or 100% alcohol by simple boiling. Regardless of how they removed all the alcohol, the drink has nice spiciness from cloves but in reality was really water downed. Next time just stick to the alcoholic one or have some wine. (3 stars) The pork chop entree however, was no joke - perfectly cooked and so juicy. I like the combination of apple and horseradish to give equal hints of sweetness with some heat. Three out of five of us ordered this. If you want to share some apps, I can definitely recommend splitting some focaccia bread and some fries. What a hidden gem in this neighborhood of Emeryville. If it wasn't for Yelp! and looking for something unique, we would have not had the fortune of finding this bright spot of the Townhouse Restaurant. Situated in a quiet and quaint neighborhood of Emeryville, we learned that Townhouse is coming up in its Centennial anniversary. And much of the building and a good amount of the interior wooden floors are from the very original site! So much character and history. It is evident that it has expanded and been renovated over the years, but nonetheless, it felt so charming to be dining in history. We arrived midweek during the dinner hours. There was a good crowd both inside and outside on their covered patio. Luckily we were able to be seated right away. The happy hour menu had already ended, but we were able to find plenty of food options that intrigued us. Prices are moderate, and food taste is ammmmmaaaaazinnnng! We ordered the 1/2 rack ribs where the meat just came right off the bone. It was probably one of the best we've ever had. The cheese burger was so perfectly seasoned and cooked medium rare, just the way we like it. The fish and chips can be a nice shareable portion if you're not ravaging. We went to Town House looking forward to their delicious cioppino, only to find out it's no longer on the menu--very disappointing. We also learned they've removed the wedge salad and their excellent cheesecake--three standout items that really set them apart. It seems the menu has been scaled back quite a bit. To keep things simple, we ordered calamari, but it was disappointing--tough and lacking flavor. For our entrée, we had a hamburger, which was quite bland. Wonderful experience from entry to exit! The service here is exceptional from the hostess to who I believe was an owner/manager to our wonderful server. Top tier welcoming and helpful. The indoor and outdoors were both cozy and created a wonderful atmosphere for dining Our waitress gave great recommendations for a bottle of wine that would pair with our food and helped us picked dishes that were 10/10 We shared the fresh baked focaccia with the marinara and bistro oil and it was so warm and delicious We also shared the Fried Brussels Sprouts without the Bacon-bourbon glaze and it was so 10/10 I ordered the mussels and they were able to make it for me without the Calabrese sausage. It was so good it didn't taste like a something was missing from the broth. We finished up with the Cinnamon Bread Pudding and honestly it's as delicious as it sounds! Food: 3-4/5 depending on dish Service: 4/5 Ambiance: Casual vibes with a elevated cozy ambiance Value: 3/5 The best dish that we agreed as a group, was the angus ribeye, followed by the cioppino. The cioppino primarily for the flavor of the soup/sauce. However it wasn't like the ingredients were super fresh. The ribeye was cooked well, but again wasn't a steak that you would feel like this is an "amazing ribeye". The ribs were by far the least favorite. They were dry. While it was still an enjoyable meal, food was overall a miss for us. Service: friendly staff, only reason I took a star off is because they could've been more attentive with drink refills. Some slack because the restaurant was busy. The ribs did come out with the wrong side and the restaurant did give us the correct side in addition at no charge so that's good. Value: while pricing aligned to what I expected it to be, for what you are paying, I'd probably eat elsewhere. I would come back, but would try other restaurants first. read more

I love focaccia but was disappointed that it was lacking in flavor and the consistency felt wrong. My partner had the prime rib and complained that it was tough. I ordered a pesto pasta that was lacking in flavor. My old fashioned tasted like a shot of whiskey. We had several appetizers and entrees. All were very pleased with the quality. Service was attentive and very knowledgeable. I remembered the ambiance as rustic and cozy. After all the years they have managed to keep all that charm and modernize it. I invited my companion for an early dinner during the week, pleasant with enjoyable music, attentive, kind server. To my surprise they had the entire menu available, not just the Happy Hour menu, I was delighted. Parking is all along the street and about 7-8 spots in their parking lot, but be aware that it's one way only so you'll need to back up to leave. Townhouse has been on my future FIL's mind for years now after hearing great reviews so the family made reservations and now the mystery is no mystery. Because it was a Holiday, they had a limited menu which was fine, made it easier to choose a dish. I opted for their hash and the overall taste was okay. The toasted bread was the best since it was slightly buttered. Maybe because it was a limited menu this day, but I wasn't really impressed by the food or the service. For a good while after getting our food, our waitress disappeared when we wanted condiments and more water so we kind of picked up what we could from unoccupied tables and eventually one of us went inside to get attention. From the beginning of our experience to the end, what a perfect experience. I understand that eating food this good, and having drinks this fantastic are going to cost some money. The drinks felt custom made for us, even though we just ordered off the drink menu from the "Townhouse" specific cocktails. This bartender knew his stuff. The FOOD was amazing. My husband ordered a medium-rare steak that was perfectly cooked, I ordered the fresh pesto pasta with jumbo prawns. The prawns were so fantastic, the pesto was bright and delicious, the pasta tasted fresh and perfect. I had no complaints, literally, at all. The prices are appropriate when the food is this good! You'll want to tip your waitstaff, they are well-trained here and take such good care. We showed up for lunch on a Saturday at 2:30pm. The restaurant was basically empty, but we weren't made to feel like an imposition (and I sometimes do when the restaurant is empty), we weren't checked on too often, we were treated like prime time dinner guests. My roommate and I came here on a random Thursday night and we were seated soon after we arrived. This restaurant has its own small parking lot and there are some street parking options as well. We sat outdoors in the patio area which had overhead covering and heat lamps. I loved the patio area because it was spacious and had cute string lights. To start, my roommate and I shared the lamb chops and some roasted Brussels sprouts. The lamb chops were moist and flavorful. The Brussels sprouts were a little one dimensional and greasy. For entree I ordered the chicken rigatoni pasta with sun dried tomatoes. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the flavor of the sun dried tomatoes really came through which I liked. I also thought that the portion size was very generous. The service was inconsistent. Our first server was amazing and very attentive. However, our second server was very slow. It took ~20min to get our check after we asked for it and our waters were never refilled. Overall, this place was good but the service was a bit lack luster. It's been about a year since we've been here. Boy, what a slide down. First, there were toddlers running and screaming all around the restaurant without supervision. Not somewhere for a quiet or romantic dinner. The meal was horribly salty. Dessert was inedible: tough apples in a crisp recipe that could not be chewed! Tough apples or is someone using a microwave to heat up portions? And some inaccuracies in the menu: Lapperts doesn't make "gelato." Gelato is not ice cream, and I would expect a restaurant to know the difference. Service was good, and I feel bad for wait staff having to contend with the food prep staff for their livelihoods. It was the highlight of the evening. Thick, juicy, and tender ... it might have been the best pork chop I've ever had. I would go back just for the pork chop. I had a bite of the ribeye ordered by one of my dining companions, and it, too, was quite delicious - tender and juicy (cooked medium rare). But, again, we all agreed the pork chop was the star. We treated ourselves to a few desserts, indulging in the crème brûlée, carrot cake, and bread pudding. The bread pudding (which tasted like a bread pudding made of cinnamon rolls) was the winner in the dessert round, followed by the crème brûlée. The carrot cake, which came from another establishment, was just OK. There's indoor and outdoor seating, and service is pretty prompt before the 7 p.m. rush, at which point things can slow down a bit. We got there for a 6:30 p.m. reservation and it was a perfect. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly. Hubby and I decided to have a date night tonight and Townhouse was the best spot for an intimate & quiet dinner. We sat near the bar and Alejandro, who was wonderful, took care of us all evening. I ordered a lavender gimlet to start, and for appetizers, we got the charcuterie board and the townhouse salad. Both were amazing beginnings to our meal! For entrees we ordered the chicken piccata and tri-tip ribeye, both cooked perfectly and so tender. I ordered them with the innocent hope of getting something fresh and delightful. What I received was a crime scene. Half were sealed shut like they were trying to protect me from their contents. The others? Still had *barnacles* on them. **Barnacles**. Literal ocean scabs. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to eat them or exfoliate. One mussel looked like it had been through a divorce and was ready to sue the chef. Another one whispered "help me" in mollusk Morse code. I bit into one and got a mouthful of grit, regret, and what I can only describe as low tide sadness. When I politely mentioned the crustacean chaos to the manager or owner (Older white guy), they blinked twice -- possibly to reboot -- and then shrugged like I had asked for gluten-free water. Came here with some friends for the first time and was pleasantly surprise to find this gem. There is street parking along with a couple of spots in their parking area (about 8 car spots). We had reservations and were seated right away. This was on a Tuesday night so it was not crowded but the tables were busy and they were spaced away from each other so it didn't feel like we were all sitting on top of everyone. First thing - the staff is extremely attentive. Without even realizing it empty plates were being taken away and drinks were made sure to be filled. Our table ordered a number of items, but here is what I tried Skuna Salmon - Very filling, BUT I do wish the salmon had more flavor and skin. I kept wishing to be able to add salt. I also wish that the greens that came with it were more. I feel conflicted writing this review. While the food wasn't terrible, I find myself trying to make excuses for the restaurant that I shouldn't need to. Party of 2, sat in the back outdoor area. Didn't seem terribly busy, but I guess looks might be deceiving. We were forgotten by the server for nearly 20 minutes before even ordering. Tried to get people's attention but not even a passing glance from anyone. Food took, I suppose, a normal amount of time to come out, but everything's now skewed because of the wait time. When the food arrived, everything just felt aggressively just ok? Given the price nearly everything on the menu, everything was pretty underwhelming - from the pasta to bbq ribs the justification just wasn't there for me. He gave me a piece (albeit a small piece, lol) and I couldn't agree more. The seasoning used was very good and it was one of the better CP dishes I have tasted. His fiancé had the Bolognese and she said it was very good. I had the Chicken Alfredo and it did not disappoint. The Alfredo sauce was creamy and flavorful. The chicken was moist and tender. This is a very good dish! I also had the Wedge Salad. It was good but could have used a bit more dressing. Suggest if you order this to ask for more dressing on the side. For dessert we shared the flan (with a candle) to celebrate my son's birthday. The flan was very good and I plan to order this again next time I come back here, and like Arnold said, I WILL be back! Only issue of concern was the service. Our waitress did her best but it appeared she was stretched too thin. I would have liked to see her a little more often. Not her fault at all as she had too many tables to attend to. From my view the management may have not scheduled enough waiters/waitresses on this night. Our reservation was at 7pm so it was busy, but they could have done better. The managers helped our waitress by brining over our drinks but this was not enough.
