Both were so tender they were falling apart although I only tasted a small bite of his ribs it was delicious but the brisket was almost melt in your mouth delicious. Have eaten here multiple times with terrific results. In my most recent lunch visit I enjoyed the moist pulled pork sandwich, which has a distinctive flavor and sweetness from s touch of brown sugar and apple vinegar flavoring. House-made sauces are on the table. The mild is sweet due to generous contribution of molasses; the Hot! sauce is far from packing real heat and is largely a tangier version of the mild. The sandwich was good but toasting the ordinary supermarket hamburger buns would have kicked up the flavor. Two sides come with the plate. I ordered the crunchy, creamy cole slaw and potato chips this time. Previously, I've had the tangy baked beans. Both the slaw and beans were good; the chips were ordinary Lay's Ruffles. Big Muddy isn't quite a dive but it leans that direction in an old building on Broadway, which looks itself like its more prosperous years were some time ago. Other tips: Street parking. Small inside eating space, but a public park is across the street. My hubby is kind of a bbq snob, & he says he would definitely come back! He had the snack plate w/ beans & potato salad. He enjoyed the pulled pork, ribs, brisket & pork tips. Big Muddy's is in an Ayerco gas station/truck stop. I heard from a local that the restaurant had just moved from a downtown location but they hadn't actual tried it out themselves. Dont let the fact that it's attached to a gas station sketch you out. The barbecue was excellent! I had the brisket sandwich that came with two sides! I had candied yams and green beans. My boyfriend had the pulled pork sandwich with baked beans and potato salad as his sides. Both sandwiches were very tasty as well as the sides. I would definitely recommend this bbq restaurant. Great BBQ with no pretensions! We were driving through on our way home from Des Moines to St. Louis and we were looking for a place to eat. We saw mixed reviews but the positive ones convinced us to give it a try. Definitely no curb appeal and no charm, but we loved the BBQ! My husband is a hobbyist smoker/BBQ'er and we've tried most BBQ restaurants around St Louis and we felt like this BBQ really kept up! My husband got the brisket sandwich and it had a great bark on the edge. The sides he had were fine - not like gourmet ones in some of the St. Louis places, but definitely yummy. Never heard of Pork Tips, but damn were they good. Brisket also good. Ribs good. Pulled pork a bit soggy. Beans and potato salad were solid. My kids ate most of what they got, which is unusual because they're kind of jerks when it comes to food. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but they can be pains when it comes to eating. Owner came out and talked to us which was cool. Talked shop and was cool with the kids. Seemed like an interesting dude. Would recommend if I. Jesse provided great company on a Wednesday night before closing and didn't seem at all inconvenienced by me coming in while he was cleaning the place. This is OK BBQ. Ordered the brisket sandwich, it was served on a cheap quality bun and had 3 pieces of fat that measured no less than 1" square and at least 1/4" thick. Oh and it was cold... We ordered the side of ribs with 4 sides and a drink and the total was $27 Lucas was the cook (chef ) of the ribs and all of the sides and they were really good. The ribs were cooked perfectly ( a dry rub rib with the sauce served at the table and the sauce was a really nice sweet sauce that complimented the rub on the ribs) and I'm not a fan of potato salad...but that was really good potato salad. I let my sidekick have all of the slaw since it wasn't anything special and I thought the beans needed a little something extra , as for the sweet potato it was cooked nicely but the butter/brown sugar topping was prepared correctly but not allowed to let the brown sugar dissolve so you got a grainy sugar on top of a soft sweet potato (maybe that's an acquired taste) but overall it was really good and once again Lucas did a FANTASTIC job on the ribs. read more

So the downtown location is now closed, although all maps and services still take you to that address. There is a sign on the door advising you that they now operate out of the Ayers Truck Stop. On 61. So we went. 1:30 on a sunny Sunday and the place was empty. The guy serving was very polite and helpful. There is not much worse than BBQ that is not being consumed quickly but against better instincts we both ordered the pulled pork. It looked indeed that it had been prepared fresh (some days before) and although an ample serving, and a fresh bun, it was awful. Flavorless. They offered two unmarked sauces on the table. Neither added any zest to the pasty pulled pork. The sides were unremarkable beens, slaw and Lays chips. They might survive because they are on the highway but I would not count on it. Fast food would have been better option. KFC is right across the street and Wendy's next door. read more

It's always fun when you stumble across cool towns on your way driving across the country. We were headed towards Springfield, Illinois from Kansas City and immediately became aware of our surroundings. A small river town, called Hannibal, located on the east end of Missouri. As often as we were going out of our way for BBQ during our trip in cities like KC, Memphis, and Oklahoma City, we never thought that one of the best places we tried would be in Hannibal, Missouri. The service was amazing here. The guy who took our order informed us that they were out of pulled pork, but when we got our food they threw in some rib tips instead--and they were awesome! We ordered the meat sampler ($15), which came with a lot of food--brisket, ribs, and, now, rib tips. It also came with 2 sides. We got the yams and beans. I know I've probably said this about other places, but the beans here were the best I've ever had. They were packed with that St. Louis flavor I love so much. The yams were amazing as well. They weren't overly sweet. Usually places just pack their yams with sugars, but the flavor in these was more complex. The ribs were fantastic, either with or without the sauce--you choose, but either way you can't ever be wrong. The brisket went GREAT with the sauce. It was cooked to perfection and had a unique flavor. Almost like a really good ballpark frank--and I mean that in the best way possible. The sauce was tangy like a St. Louis-style, but even a tad sweeter--making it its own thing. The owner of Big Muddy came out after we ate and we talked with him for about 30 minutes. He was a really great guy! After a short while of talking to him, we felt like we'd known him for years. The brisket by the pound here was $18, but with the sides being so good, you might as well get the meat sampler. You'll get a TON of food! We were already talking about making a special trip back to Missouri and doing a whole day in Hannibal. And you know we're gonna be coming back to Big Muddy BBQ. read more
