Went for a ride to the Oregon Coast today with a friend. We stopped by a quaint little Saloon called The Big O Saloon, at the recommendation of a friend and co-worker. It looked very small on the outside, but when we went inside, it was very nice and roomy. They had lots of logger swag, such as the two axs with handles at the servers station rather that the typical brass rails. The bar was a thick, probably a foot thick, single piece of timber. There were numerous taxidermied critters, large round saw blades with images cut out in them and chain saws festooning the area. They also had a nice patio if one was so inclined to venture outside. We were greeted by the cute red-headed Katie who greeted us with a warm smile and friendly chatter. She Asked us what we'd like to drink and gave us menus. She told us that it was Monday Madness and the special was a $5 burger, cheese was an extra 50 cents. We both splurged and got cheese on the daily special. In short order out food arrived, hot and looking good. Katie then told us about all the various events happening at the Big O including a PIG ROAST! They do NOT put any condiments on, but bring out a beer 6 pack with Ranch, Ketchup, Mustard, Salt, Pepper and Fry Sauce so you can dress your burger just the way you like it. The Burgers were good, cooked perfectly. I believe preformed patties with fresh tomatoes lettuce and pickles. They also came with a generous helping of Kettle Chips. All and all, a decent burger, at a Great Price. They have a nice selection of Icy Cold beer and many top shelf liquors. If you're ever out that way, stop in and have a cold one or their special, great value for your buck in a cool little Saloon.

Gorgeous bar, lots of signs to read. Love the ambiance.

Two guitar pickers who traveled all the way from Arkansas were playing elevated folk rock on electric guitars to a crowd of maybe 14. Comfy sofas around the edges of the bar, and some small tables with tropical theme chairs. Two tables right on the Riverwalk outside the door. Full bar with liquor, surprisingly. Clearly a locals crowd, the last set was a twenty minute encore, and a local musician joined on the drum kit. Owner too? Awesome! I had a sangria in a Mai Tai flavor with coconut and pineapple, it was spectacular. Like nothing I have tasted before, and leaving me wanting to try ALL SIX flavors! Lyon's Den is an awesome find, a vacation themed tropical escape. I wish there was a bar like this back home in Phoenix!

I would say try the local beers on tap but I'd be lying again (they have 5+ on rotation, maybe all the time idk but tonight they have 5 and the ones I had were fantastic and tried a couple more tasters). If you're going to stay by the water you should come here for two reasons..... 1 )the atmosphere is cool and relaxing with great music from the 70s - early 2000s, and an amazing patio (I came in a Sunday night and it was "slow" [what I expected from a Sunday night]) 2) the bartender is awesome. Not sure what nights he works tho. His name is Pain I think. Without a single clue what to do in Astoria (first time visitors), we parked for $10 in the Port of Astoria lot on the west side of town. It was a warm day, and we were hungry, so we took to Marine Drive to look for breakfast and this was the first place we saw. It says they serve it all day. I don't think they have their own lot but street parking doesn't seem to be a premium here. Later on, we discovered that this place also made the vet staff's recommended list which was a happy coincidence. It says on the door that they don't have public restrooms, which they don't, but they do have a men's and women's restroom for customers. Nice ambiance with the nautical theme and some slot machines (is gambling legal in Astoria?). I particularly liked the piece they took from a real ship called Raven and perched a fake raven on it on the wall. Makes the little goth in my heart happy. You order at the bar and the lady who took it wasn't the friendliest. P told me in retrospect that service was slow and she had a bit of an attitude when I asked him whether this place warranted a 4 or 5. I guess she did, but all I noticed was how good the food was! The workers breakfast for $14 is outstanding! The sausage patty is luscious with a nice bite of heat. They make your eggs perfectly and they cook their potatoes skin on in a skillet that leaves the edges with a nice crisp flavorful crust. You need the toast (we both ordered dry wheat) to mop up the egg and eat with the sausage to fill you up. Honestly, haven't had a breakfast where every single element of it was all of great quality. Plus, it's an almost perfect portion of food. I know I want to go back if I can just convince P to ignore the attitude. Another cool local hangout. There was a jolly bunch of older men drinking, laughing and chatting that provided an awesome soundtrack to our visit.

It's not big...less than a dozen tables inside, there is outdoor seating, and when the weather is nice I bet it's a great place to be on a warm summer evening. Right on the water, with views of the boats. Ilwaco itself is a bit of a dungy town, but this place offers some delicious dishes, and the ambience is cozy, & romantic. We were immediately seated, as we were the only ones at the restaurant on this cold, wet PNW day. We both ordered a cup of their crab bisque. Delicious. It really hit the spot, and warmed up our cold bones. What I really liked about it was it wasn't too salty! Both my husband and I added a bit of salt and that elevated the flavor, but I liked that the chef didn't over salt it, and gave me the choice of how much sodium I wanted to add. My husband wished he had ordered a bowl. It is delightful, flavorful and a decent amount of crab in it, as well. (I enjoyed it so much, I forgot to take a picture of it!!) The chef really knows his stuff and has a great flavor profile on the menu. My husband ordered the Helm Burger with tots. He gave them two thumbs up. The burger patty looked fresh homemade, as opposed to frozen bought at Costco. It was a decent size, & thick and juicy. With the addition of bacon to it, he was greatly satisfied. I ordered the Deckhand. Let me tell you, this was a delicious sandwich! The pork is tender and juicy, the sauce is sweet but not overly so. The picked added a wonderful crispy texture along with the sweetness of the caramelized onions....it was a tastebud explosion. So good. And so filling. I had to take 1/2 home and was a bit annoyed when I found my husband ate it the next day for lunch! I guess that just means I'll have to go back sooner than later to order it again. I'd like to also mention that the tater tots were perfectly fried and crispy! The waitress from friendly and attentive and the chef was sweet and so pleased with our compliments. Don't wait a moment longer. Get yourself to Ilwaco and check this gem of a place out! You won't be disappointed.

Now, weeds growing up through the patio and paint peeling off the doors are what first greet you. Followed by a greeting of "sit anywhere", and so you choose a clean table that doesn't have the chairs leaned up against the table. Ordered from the over priced menu. Burger served over done, cheese cold - not melted. Shrimp had some strange oily sauce that was not the advertised lemon garlic. View of the harbor is still good, but not worth $100 for a barely edible lunch. Very sad.
