I found out about this place from a you tube video about good places to eat. While in town we stopped by to check it out. We had the blackened grouper sandwich and the parmesan garlic fries. They both were delicious. We also had the fried oreos and fried keylime pie for the 1st time which did not dissapoint. Different but good. An older gentleman (Mr. Hamilton) with a cute poodle paid for our meal. What a pleasant surprise. He was just sitting in the resataurant when we came in and offered. What a nice gesture!! LOVE THIS PLACE!! It's one of Tampa's best hidden gems. It's a small place but be sure to eat it fresh if you're luck to grab a seat. The service is very kind and the food comes out fast! I stopped by here yesterday for an al fresco lunch. The food was good and reasonably priced and the staff was friendly and did a great job managing the social distancing thing. I had the deviled crab which was a bit of a surprise in that while it was the shape of a crab, it did not have the shell. Also rather than a thin breading as is typical, the coating was more like what you would find on a corn dog. I decided to peel it off. The spiced crab mixture inside was sweet and a little spicy. The crab was served with buffalo sauce, which I tried. The sauce in and of itself was wonderfully vinegary and hot, but really was too strong a sauce for crab. I also had the smoked fish dip. It came as a large serving on a bed of lettuce with saltines. The dip was good, but did not have as much of a smokey flavor as many I've had in the past. I asked the local Tampa residents where the recommended I eat for lunch and everyone said Big Rays fish camp. I looked it up and what stood out the most was this grouper sandwich. I love grouper and the drive was less 5 minutes away. It's a very small place with a lot pictures on the wall of fisherman and the different fish they've caught over the years. There is very limited interior seating but they also have covered outdoor seating. I took my food to go. The young lady taking the orders had amazing customer service skills, as she was taking orders, running orders out to the cars as well as the the outdoor area. When I arrived there was 4-5 people ahead of me that all ordered this grouper sandwich. At this point I'm totally convinced that sandwich I have to have!!! So I ordered mine blackened with the server suggested fries. I've had grouper sandwiches on every coast and at the price point of $21, it's easily the most expensive I've had to date that wasn't fine dining. But don't let that deter you good people!!! That sandwich was epic!!!!!!! Very very large portion that came dressed with chopped romaine lettuce, tomato, onion, and tarter sauce. It was perfectly seasoned, the bun was buttered and toasted, the fish very meaty. My only drawback is I wasn't really a fan of the fries that came with a garlic Parmesan topping. And also we got a Philly cheesesteak with shrimp. But the only thing that was misleading is the prices on the little menu that the waitress I was taking an order gave us is significantly different than the prices on the menu on the wall. For an example a lobster corn dog was about $18 on the paper menu. But on the wall where they would charge you was $27. So again they need to fix that issue cuz it's misleading but other than that the lady taking the orders behind the counter. Was very friendly helpful and the food I would give five stars but the only reason I'm giving you four stars. I stumbled upon this place a few years ago when I was PCSd to MacDill... and while vacationing I took my family here... The blackened grouper sandwich that me and my guy both ordered kind of fell apart as we were eating it. The sauce also seemed kind of watery and dripped all over our dish. The female cashier recommended that we try the onion rings and fries with the sandwich and we went for it. However, as we ate it, we felt that the entire combo was too dry. The sandwich def needed something refreshing alongside. Luckily, I ordered coleslaw as an add-on and that really helped! Coleslaw tasted vinegary (pickled-like) and I really enjoyed that. If you want to experience some old Florida charm in a city setting then you probably need to try out Big Ray's - the accommodations here are what you'd expect on a river bank restaurant a few small tables on the interior and lots of seating options outside, in the summer it will be humid and in the winter you'll have to deal with a little chill but everything here seems to be authentic this is by no mean a tourist trap, the local eat here so that in itself is the draw for me and the fact that I'm always looking for that perfect fish sandwich. Admittedly I can be sort of a food snob at times I have no issue putting down my hard earned cash for quality regardless of the setting so this kind of place appeals to me, it looks clean the customer service is outstanding and the seafood is what everyone raves about so it was a destination no doubt. I wasn't going to let the opportunity escape me once I read about their fresh Grouper sandwiches, we like fried and blackened grouper so we ordered one of each to split and share both accompanied by those beautiful onion rings. Now my idea of the most bestest fish sandwich in the world is pretty simple and this place has all the ingredients to build such an iconic sandwich and forever be memorialize in my mind as the spot that can deliver it consistently. Although I think Ray's certainly builds a fish sandwich that make this place somewhat of an institution the construction of this sandwich was lacking in my opinion and may be that is just because I've raised the bar so high. I really enjoyed both but the for me the blackened was much better the seasoning was absolutely amazing, the fried one was a little bland but both delivered on the quantity and quality of the fish (maybe best ever in regards to the fish itself).
