I've been here twice now--the first time just for coffee, and the second time with a friend after a Pilates class. Both visits were great. Tatagi Coffee is a beautiful spot with a cozy but open concept and fantastic natural lighting. We were seated right away by a very welcoming host, and the view of the hills provides a perfect backdrop for a relaxed meal. The food was the absolute highlight. The Japanese-style mille-feuille pancakes have a unique melt-in-your-mouth texture that is really hard to find elsewhere; they are incredibly light and airy. I also noted but didn't yet try the omurice and tonkatsu, which are solid Japanese mainstays. We did have a small hiccup with the order; the ice cream for my kid was missed, and there was some confusion with the server when trying to correct the bill. However, the rest of the staff was so friendly and the quality of the pancakes was so high that it didn't ruin the experience. The location does not offer convenient parking nor space for families with small children (a toddler and a baby). We went on a Thursday morning and it was fairly busy. It took a while for our waitress to take our order: original pancakes, wagyu bento box, omurice weekday set, which includes a matcha latte and dessert pancakes. The best part about the omurice was the egg; two pieces of chicken karage were crispy but salty; the curry sauce was also salty for me. The pancakes were soft, fluffy, and eggy. The butter was hard to spread on the delicate pancakes (I was expecting the butter to melt on top tbh). We thought they forgot the wagyu bento box but why brought it out was we were finishing our foods. My husband thought his Wagyu bento box was salty. We ordered a side of berries because both kids inhaled the berries from the dessert pancakes plate. I found mold on two of the raspberries, which wasn't a big deal to us but then the waitress was like "no, it's not mold" then proceed to tak e the berries to the back to check then came back with two pieces of strawberries to replace the moldy ones. We decided not to go back because of the service. Water wasn't offered. My husband has to get up to get our silverware. We needed more water but staff did not check-in throughout our meal. What a nice and cozy restaurant. From the minute I walked in I felt so welcomed and comfortable. The staff were amazing! I of course had to try their Japanese pancakes. Read on the infatuation list that the pancake has no jiggle lol but still saw people waiting in line during the rain during Christmas, so I just decided to give it a try. Let me say the pancake has quite a bit of jiggles! Pretty sure plenty of egg white is in the pancake so it's light and fluffy, but unlike soufflé pancake, this one lingers more in my mouth, which I like. Between chicken cutlet sandwich and burger steak I'd definitely go for the former. The chicken came out glitteringly fresh and juicy, coated with flavorful breadcrumb. It's hands down the best fried chicken sandwich I've had for a while. Potato wedges and burger steak I'm not a fan of, especially the burger steak. So my chat bot told me apparently this kind of burger steak usually has breadcrumbs so you get the mushier texture as opposed to a more meat feel patty. Coffee on the other hand is a worthy mention. I'm not an expert on coffee but I could tell that this coffee is something different. Can't say how, but you know Not much service to speak of. The food is mediocre and some dishes have some fold with the...sugar. The overall vibe of the store is nice, but that's it pretty much. If you want to go to a full service restaurant and have to fill up your own waters, keep asking for extra chopsticks, forks, napkins etc and being Ignored most of the time by most waiters there then this is the place for you to go and to have a good time. I'll only mention one incident: I asked the waiter to please give me some water while I was eating (the water cups are super small) and his response was: "there's is a water station, do it yourself." I was excited to finally try Takagi after hearing about the pancakes and seeing a packed restaurant every time I passed by. After going on a recent Sunday, I don't feel the need to go back. The pancakes are indeed as fluffy as advertised, but they aren't exceptional enough to justify the price. I tried the classic Millefeuille Pancakes, which are pretty good! They are definitely on the egg-y side as far as pancakes go, but super soft and yummy, and the butter, maple syrup, and whipped cream that come with it are delicious. I didn't leave any bites on the plate. I had wanted to try one of the flavored pancakes, but the prices are pretty insane and pretty much double from the classic ones. $17 for 2 pancakes with some berries is wild, especially when 4 of the classic ones are $13.50. I also tried the Takagi Original Blend coffee (iced) which was very good. It's definitely a quality coffee and you can tell that it's freshly roasted in house. Plus, the rest of the coffee menu is $6.50 and up, which makes $5.50 for a black coffee almost feel reasonable. All in all I'm glad I tried Takagi. The pancakes are tasty and the restaurant has a fun authentic feel to it, but it also seems like a place designed to be trendy (and expensive) so it'll go viral on Instagram. read more
