I came here with some girlfriends to celebrate my bday. We definitely made the right choice in coming here. Everything exceeded our expectations. We had a great spot in the front room overlooking the patio. Our server was great, attentive without being overbearing. We were having such a great time that we didn't realize that they had already closed, yet we were never pressured to hurry up and leave. The food was absolutely delicious. We got 4 different options and and split them 4 ways. The grilled asparagus and Ozark forest mushrooms were my favorite. The mimosas paired perfectly with the meal. We ordered all four of the dessert specials; flourless chocolate cake, chocolate cherry pie, strawberry rhubarb crisp and strawberry basil and goat cheese sorbet, which was beyond amazing. And then to top it off they brought out four mini carrot cakes with a candle in one. My foodie friends said this was the best place they have eaten brunch at and we decided we'd be happy to come anytime or brunch or dessert! If I could this place 10 stars, I would. The food is really good, but the portion size to price isn't. My wife had the Cobb salad a d enjoyed it, but it was extremely small for $13. I had the blue cheese burger and it was a bit small as well. I asked for a small salad to replace the side, and was given a pinch of mixed greens, which was a let down. My lovely wife and I did small plates and a salad. BBQ shrimp, mussels, Brussels sprouts and beet salad were all delicious and easily 4 star worthy. Good mussels are hard to find and their's were delicious. New Orleans style bbq shrimp were probably among the best we've had. The service was very good as well. Just the way I like, knowledgeable about the food and wine, friendly, attentive but not overbearing. In a word classy. The ambiance here is great. Granted it was a slow night, but I've been here before when it was busy, but still I think this place has good acoustics busy or not. It's a place where you can carry on a conversation without too much distraction or straining to hear. This is a great restaurant. I'm planning to go more often. First the ambiance is great. I wanted to give four stars but because the service was so underwhelming, I'm going with 3. Let me start by saying that both times we've eaten here the food was wonderful! Most recently, my husband and I came on a Saturday night at about 8 pm... not that late for a weekend. Even though there were plenty of open tables, they seated us right next to a table of four senior citizens who probably need to fine-tune their hearing aids. Although we learned a lot about the movies they all liked, it didn't make for great conversation between hubby and me. The server started off fine but seemed to lose interest in us after the entrees were delivered. As we were finishing our meal, one of the other servers decided to start sweeping the carpet in our area with one of those loud, annoying non-electric sweepers. Ha!!! I could maybe understand if we'd walked in at 9 but we weren't even the last table to be seated. Others had just ordered their entrees. I seriously thought he might ask us to lift our feet off the floor so he could sweep under our table. Lol! We thought about ordering dessert at the suggestion of our waitress, but when she finally returned to the table we'd lost interest and just wanted to get out of there. Ever notice how some servers become your best friend just as they are leaving the check? Ya... it was like that. We will go back for the food. Just not at 8:00 pm on a Saturday. read more

They have a friendly staff, prompt and expert service, provide delicious food which is locally sourced when appropriate, and give back to the community. In town for a band competition and picked a random place with good reviews. We were not disappointed! The ham and eggs Benedict was just a little bit different from the norm with biscuits instead of English muffin and just a touch of spice in the sauce, but it was delicious! The strawberry orange juice was a wonderful addition! My family loved their pancakes and BLT's as well. Big Sky has a great brand dedicated to healthy, locally-sourced food. I saw some good reviews and met friends there to give it a try. They delivered on the cuisine front along with a very warm and well-designed space. They have prix frix menu that looked great but we opted to try several other dishes instead: bbq shrimp, saffron-poached scallops, sweet n' sour brussel sprouts, rosemary red wine pot roast that was outstanding on gouda polenta. Yum! The server moved way too quick which we mentioned to the manager when he checked on us. He was receptive to the feedback and comped some mini carrot cakes that were truly special. Went to try big sky cafe tonight with family. I have been wanting to give it a try and we were heading to a party in the area so it was a great reason. It started out decent with some drinks and the complimentary carrot hummus. After a little wait we ordered some appetizers. Tomato soup, a salad, kale chips and mussels. The tomato soup came out after awhile and it was good. We ordered dinner expecting our other apps to be out soon. After quite a wait and no sign of our waitress we realized we had still not received our mussels or kale chips. Not being in a rush we just waited, and waited, and waited. Every attempt to wave down our waitress failed. She finally came by and said our dinner would be out soon. I asked about our apps and she said she was sorry. But really I'd like to know what happened there. There seemed to be plenty of staff, and yet somehow that had been totally overlooked. We let it go and told her to just take it off our bill. By now we were already starting to feel full. You know that feeling when you've eaten your appetizers and waited far too long for food and the messages from stomach to brain are telling you that it is satiated. Yeah that. Alas our food arrived via another waiter. Everything was alright. My wife liked her lamb, my eggplant was good and my inlaws didnt like either the duck, or stew. I agreed the persimmon glaze did nothing for the duck breast. I felt like it was a reach to try using seasonal fruit in a dish that just flopped. After this we waved down our waitress to get our check, waved down another waiter to take our credit cards, waved down the same different waiter to get our cards back finally, and then our waitress returned for one final encore and return our checks to us. Final words, if you start the night off with a waitress that reminds you of the sloth from Zootopia. Leave while you still can. Otherwise it will be a long slow night. Waiters should wait on their customers, customers should not wait for their waiters. In the end the service killed this one for us. read more

We enjoyed a family dinner @ Big Sky Cafe last night - yum! As well, the atmosphere & service was very conducive to our 3 generation dinner. We had the Bleu Burger, Cheddar Cheese & Macaroni, duo deviled eggs & lavash with carrot hummus - all would be ordered again! I appreciated the H20 conservation. I'll look forward to dining here again- hopefully cool enough the next time to dine on the Patio & I want to try Rush Hour. I gave BSC 4 stars as I found a couple of dishes to be too salty for my tastes & the crispy Kale was so flaky dry that I almost choked a couple of bites. My mother Loved the Kale. So awful. That was my experience in a nutshell. We came here on a whim, after hearing good reviews. We were seated quickly and saw that we were one of only about five tables, a couple of which had already gotten their food or were just drinking coffee. Two servers and a hostess were around, by our count, though no one seemed terribly busy. Kyle, our server, stopped by our table after about ten minutes of our waiting to say he was sorry and would be with us shortly. After a couple more minutes, he stopped by and got our drink order. We then waited another 10 minutes for drinks (my lemonade tasted like it was poured straight out of a Real Lemon bottle, fyi). He set the drinks down and then disappeared for 15 minutes. By the time he finally reappeared, we were ready to just get up and leave, but decided to order the breakfast potatoes and fruit appetizers and then go (I can be hangry when starving). The potatoes came out under chunks moistened powdered seasoning and a drizzle of sauce. The sauce was pointless, when you have that much caked-on seasoning. At least they were edible. The fruit was a disaster (who messes up fruit??). A couple slices of orange, two sliced strawberies, pineapple, three slices of honeydew, and a handful of blueberries. First, the pineapple was under-ripe. Meh, that's okay. Some of the blurberries were smashed on the plate. Eh, it's still food. Then, I tried the honeydew. *immediate disgust face* It smelled like YEAST and tasted like it was pulled out of the garbage, before being cut up and thrown on the plate. With that, I was done. This whole experience was terrible. The waitstaff was slow, which doesn't make sense of they're not busy? My husband found the staff hiding in the kitchen, chatting away, when looking for a restroom. I'm so angry right now that I was served rotten fruit and a pile of seasoning and a side of potatoes, and I paid $20 for it. Never again. read more

We were there for my mom's birthday and everything about the meal was fantastic. Service provided by Tina was great...friendly, timely and offered great suggestions. BIg Sky is kind of obscure. Nobody really ever talks about it, but everyone seems to know it exists. This, combined with their fantastic looking menu enticed me enough to go. Started off with the Watermelon-ginger sangria. At first taste, i was not sure if i liked it. But several more sips and i was sold! I didn't taste much ginger but it did have a strong melon taste...maybe midori? It was very light and perfect for a hot day. Okay, so the worst part of this meal was figuring out what to eat!!! So much looked amazing. I started with the Farmers Sprout salad. I tend to shy away from ordering salads because i eat them so much and they are really easy to make at home but Big Sky commits to local produce and the salad sounded delish - and it was. But it would have been PERFECT if it had a bit of sea salt sprinkled over top the eggplant that was in the dish. But, i'm just being picky cause it was darn good. For my next course i went with the Smoked Trout Croquettes. I just adore smoked trout so i new i needed to eat this. When thinking of Croquettes - I typically think of a fried food. The server seemed to anticipate this and let me know the dish was not fried and was served cold. I went for it anyway, after all its hot as hell outside! Um, so yeah...it was basically amazing. The croquettes looked kinda small and sad at first but after polishing off the dish i was extra full! They were served over a bed of raw spinach, perfectly cooked asparagus and topped with a horseradish creme sauce and...pickled onions. The pickled onions were so good and added the perfect sour/sweetness to the dish. Well done! I would most definitely eat this again, and in fact i am going to try to recreate this dish myself. Service was great, and they have a super cute patio..way too hot today but on nicer evening i wold love to go out there and have a glass of that sangria. I want to try more of what they have to offer, as i didn't even make a dent in their fantastic looking menu. read more

Showed up at around 3:30 and was told we would only have 50 minutes to eat because of a happy hour rush at 5... with a totally empty restaurant. Rude and unprofessional to keep the doors open and deny service. Wasn't able to eat either, I think it had something to do with my company being African American, but only speculation. read more

How have I missed this place for over 2 years?! First, I Open Tabled the wrong place (sorry, Blue Sky Grill) but luckily the friend we were dining with knew what was going on. The place was packed on a Saturday night so we ate at the bar. I had the red wine flight which was wonderful with generous pours and a detailing tasting card. We also had the cheese plate and mussels to start. The cheeses came with honey, almonds, pears and toast points. They were all very good! The mussels were amazing! The broth had a smoky almost sausage taste to it with the perfect balance of garlic. Had I not had guests with me I would have eaten it like a soup, it was that good. For our main course I had the Beef Tenderloin Filet with Green Peppercorn Butter. YUM! Cooked perfectly with whipped mashed potatoes. It was a sizable portion and delicate in peppercorn flavor, not overwhelming which I appreciate. Desert was a caramel walnut apple pie that was fantastic. Not slap you in the face sugar sweet, but caramel sweet. I can't wait to go back and try more! read more

We came here a while back with a friend and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Being a busy Saturday night we were lucky enough to grab a seat at the bar. I started off with the red wine flight, good pours and a detailed tasting card. My only issue was that for my flight of wine, I want to say 2 of the 3 wines were a Cabernet. Maybe I'm being nitpicky but that bothered me a bit. We started off with a cheese plate that had four or five cheeses, almonds, honey and pears. This went down quite easily. The next appetizer we had were the muscles in a garlic broth. These were the best part of the night, if you like mussles you have to try these. A very light hint of smoke in the mussle and the garlic broth was perfect. For our main course we shared the Beef Tenderloin Filet. This was cooked perfectly and was a great cut of meat. It was tender and the green pepercorn butter that came with it was very good. The pepercorn didn't overpower as it sometimes can and the mashed potatoes were whipped to perfection. Everything we had here was great and I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to go back. read more

My beets are better... so skip this one. Calamari was done perfectly. Scallops were also perfection. Corn muffins and crackers were given and delicious as well. And folks, I rant all the time that it is about the FOOD! But, if atmosphere is that important to you, this is a nice place with excellent lighting and good outdoor space. No smoking is good, too. I am so lucky when I come home to St. Louis to visit my family. I only get home about three to four times a year (mostly for big holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas), but every time I do, my mom will organize a really nice dinner out one evening at a restaurant she and my dad have found. This time when I was home, we went to Big Sky Cafe, a little place in Webster's Old Orchard district that they've been going to for years. I'd been told about how good it was, but never been myself, so I was excited to try it. We went the Friday night after Thanksgiving and arrived at the quaint little space Big Sky Cafe inhabits: it looks like a house with a big patio on the front, lots of potted plants, and a cozy interior sectioned off into little rooms for a more intimate feel. Very inviting. At the host stand we were greeted by the chef after a man who'd walked in tried to cajole himself a table for 10 in less than an hour (not happening that night, in case you wondered). We were quickly seated in a nice corner table against one wall and our waitress was with us quickly. She explained the prix fixe menu for the evening and then brought out water for the table. Even though every other table looked like they had a glass of wine, we decided to skip it that evening. After looking over the menu (everything looked great - it was hard to choose), which is locally sourced and changes based on the seasons, we knew what we were going to get. I ordered the rosemary red wine braised pot roast with gouda polenta, carrots, onions and celery. My mom ordered two smaller dishes: the PEI mussels and the butternut squash risotto with apples and pecans, and my dad got the 3-course prix fixe: tomato soup, a garden salad and the seafood cioppino. Since my mom has a gluten sensitivity, she mentioned this to the waitress when ordering and she was kind enough to bring out a bowl of chopped vegetables along with the crackers she delivered to the table with the house-made carrot hummus. I should also note that everything that is or can be made gluten free on the menu for Big Sky Cafe is noted. The hummus was really, really good. I've never had carrot-flavor before, but it was a good one. I also had a little bit of my dad's Ellie salad before my main entree arrived (his 3-course prix fixe had large portions), and the slightly sweet dressing was a nice change of pace. When my main course came, I was a little overwhelmed by the size: a very big piece of pot roast, well braised with vegetables and layered over the polenta (it was almost completely hidden by everything else). It was delicious too. Rich, hot and very flavorful. Unfortunately I couldn't quite finish the whole thing off (it was just too much after the hummus and salad), but it was very tasty. I really enjoyed my meal and my parents did too - they've yet to have a less than stellar experience there. It was a great evening out and the prices for main dishes (around $15-$20 for an entree) were very reasonable. Big Sky Cafe is a great restaurant and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a special place to dine in St. Louis. Well done! read more

I've been to Big Sky twice now, and had a great experience both times. Our waiter took the time to explain that the left column in the menu are there regular items and the right side are there current specials which change frequently. He also asked us if we had somewhere we needed be...then said they get a big theater crowd and if we had tickets somewhere at a certain time he would be sure to get us out on time. How thoughtful! I ordered the beef tenderloin fillet. Yum! The plate was beautiful, the steak was good and the side dishes were really tasty (garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli & cauliflower. Everything was drizzled with balsamic vinegar...which of course brought it over the top. My date had the pork chop with mashed sweet potatoes and was really impressed. Last time I was there I ordered a special with chantrell mushrooms. It was good but the beef was better. Plus the ambiance is fabulous. Cozy and welcoming, with mosaic art and folk art throughout. I need to go back with the weather is nice and sit on the patio for sure. Very romantic! They don't have their own parking lot, but they are just 2 doors down from a strip mall with plenty of parking, so it's not an issue. read more

We came here after seeing that Sauce had featured Big Sky Cafe in their top brunch spots, and I'm sorry to say it was not worth it. We ordered bloody marys which were incredibly disappointing. The tomato juice tasted like it had been cut with something, some kind of fruit juice maybe, resulting in a watery mix. There was very little spice, or really any other flavors to it. They were served in white wine glasses with a cocktail straw, celery stalk, lime wedge, and olive skewer. It was pretty impossible to drink it without removing half of those, and I didn't appreciate paying for what I thought would be a full glass when we got what amounted to about half because of the wine glass. We started with the House-Cured Salmon Roll Ups, which were the highlight of my meal and I would recommend. Although, the runner who brought it to the table neglected to bring small plates with it, she said she would be back with them but they never appeared. My husband got the Scrambled Eggs & Rosemary Red Wine Braised Pot Roast which he enjoyed. We ordered our son pancakes and bacon. The pancakes were light and fluffy, the bacon was thick-cut and fine (but nothing that will blow your mind), but I was very surprised that the syrup was not maple syrup, but the sugary corn syrup based type that you'll find in diners. I'd be curious to see how they locally sourced that one... I ordered the Crabby Eggs Florentine and when it arrived it was cold and had to be sent back. It was described as biscuits topped with poached eggs, baby spinach, local tomatoes & lump crab hollandaise with breakfast potatoes. Maybe I misinterpreted this, but I expected there would be a generous portion of crab. There was not. I think what was mixed in with the hollandaise amounted to maybe a tablespoon, and I couldn't really taste it. The tomato, on the other hand, was a little too generous, and 100% raw. The spinach was raw as well. So, I felt like I was basically eating a salad with poached eggs (slightly overcooked at that) on top. The biscuits were not light and fluffy, but dense and forgettable. There was a serious lack of flavor overall. I will say the breakfast potatoes, which were a mix of russet and sweet potatoes, were nicely done. After tip this was a $75 brunch, which was absolutely not worth it. I would have much rather spent that at Pastaria or Brasserie or Home Wine Kitchen, all of which would have been worth the money. Even if this place was more reasonable priced, I would rather go to Melt or Southwest Diner. read more

I left Big Sky having to undo my pants. Ok, not seriously (I was wearing a dress), but you get the idea. I had to try EVERYTHING. I was dining with a big group and we ordered several small plates (Calamari, Goat Cheese Pizza, Egg Plant Roll-Up, Crab Cakes) which were all gone in about 3 minutes. The Crab Cakes I remember being extremely flavorful and almost melted in my mouth, they were so good. The Goat Cheese pizza came out warm and gooey and I just devoured it before it hit my plate. 2 martinis later, my Mahi Mahi came out over a mix of black beans and a side of slaw. Absolutely mouth watering and all of the flavors mixed together so perfectly. I can't wait to go back and try more things on the menu. Other things that looked (and smelled) wonderful on the table: Vegetable Risotto, Beef tenderloin, and the rainbow trout. Next time, I'm trying the sea scallops... The food at Big Sky Cafe is so wonderful that I find myself often craving their cuisine. They have traditional dishes and delightful dishes, which oddly work together to create something quite beautiful. I love their spinach, endive and fig salad as it is simply heaven on a plate. The melding of these flavors will make even the worst days very manageable. The pistachio scallops are fabulous as well. Just imagine the taste of pistachios melding with the taste of scallops, the crunch of the pistachios adding an unexpected element to the dish. The steaks are great as well, and it doesn't matter which you get. The prices are so cheap and the quality of the ingredients are so good that I really am perplexed. Meals here are consistently superb. Oh, and if you want to experiment a bit, get the beet plate! read more

Cute place! A little hard to find and easy to miss. Low key with a homey atmosphere that's great for socializing and family outings. The hummus and bread to start is delicious and the food is fresh and local. I ordered the halibut and the fruity wine flight which was all delicious! I could have just ate that hummus ALL night long! I would go back just for the hummus but the halibut was yummy as well, very tender! Came here for my anniversary. When I made the reservation they asked about special events and I mentioned it was the big day so they congratulated me and when I got to the restaurant they had a glass of champagne waiting for us, a nice touch. I liked how the menu had both classic items and seasonal items. I jumped on the (pear?) tamarind sangria and it was very delicious. My husband and I both stuck with classic dishes for this night. My pot roast was perfect, the wine really jumped it up a notch. My husband had the beef tenderloin and I could hardly convince him to let me steal a bite but I'm glad he caved in the end. We split a cherry crisp for dessert based on all the Yelp reviews. Don't get me wrong, it was good but the main dishes were so awesome they outshone the dessert course. Big Skye Cafe has some of the best food in Webster Groves! Their service is fantastic, wine list is wonderful, and the food - to die for! Even their side dish are delicious - I highly recommend the asparagus with their house sauce. So good!
