We've been dining at some of St. Louis' best restaurants for years--including The Crossing, Capital Grille, Trattoria Marcella, Buzzetta's, and many others--so we have a pretty good frame of reference for what makes a restaurant truly stand out. This one does. This restaurant reminds us of what Wright's Tavern pretends to be--and never will be, no matter how much its patrons pretend otherwise. First, you can actually get in here--and you can make a reservation more than 30 days in advance, which is refreshing in itself. There's no favoritism, no cheesy American Express concierge games, and none of the pretentiousness or snobbery that can sometimes come with certain Clayton establishments and their location. Here, the focus is simply on the food, the service, and making guests feel welcome. Second, you don't leave smelling like exhaust and cooking grease the way you do at Wright's. Third, the cuisine is simply better than Wright's and, frankly, better than almost anywhere else in the St. Louis area--including Eleven Eleven. The menu is remarkably unique and original, with a real sense of creativity behind the dishes. And perhaps best of all, you're not sitting six inches from the next table. You can actually have a private conversation without everyone around you hearing every word. This place is a reminder of just how special St. Louis truly is when it comes to dining. The halibut and Caesar salad were both outstanding, the service was exceptional, and everyone here was incredibly warm, welcoming, and down-to-earth. The filet was on par with Citizen Kane's, which is no small achievement. A truly spectacular restaurant. Highly recommended. We had the Crudo (hamachi tuna) melted in your mouth with the sauce & slight crunch - amazing! I'd return just for this dish. Lobster turnovers a MUST. Last night, I had a delightful dinner at this restaurant. I began with a Lychee Martini, which was refreshing and flavorful. For dinner, we opted for a bottle of Landman Vineyard Overlook Pinot Noir. The rolls were a delightful treat, reminiscent of donuts with a sweet butter that I couldn't resist. We started with the appetizer of Veal dumplings, which were cooked to perfection and coated in a delicious teriyaki and honey glaze. The Caesar salad was another highlight of the meal. I loved the generous amount of Parmesan cheese and the crunchy bread crumbs on top. I chose the American Wagyu Coulotte as my main course, and it was a satisfying dish. The sauce accompanying it was flavorful, but I wish I had a little more of it. For dessert, I indulged in the Dark Chocolate Turtle Brownie, which was paired with vanilla bean ice cream. It was a decadent and delicious ending to the meal. However, there were a few minor disappointments. The lighting over our table kept dimming, which was distracting and made it difficult to read the menus. My entrée plate and my friend's dessert plate also had noticeable chips in them which felt fresh and unappetizing. Sidney Street Cafe is my new favorite restaurant. We 100 percent will drive here from Memphis for this place alone. Service, atmosphere, food, value-all 10/10 and then some. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming the second we walked in, our server was helpful in her recommendations, our water glasses were full the entire meal...great experience. We ordered: (Btw Rolls were offered) Appetizers-lobster turnover & ribs Entree-my husband and I shared the duck and we added a side of potatoes. Came with a choice of salad or soup-I opted for salad. Dessert-per our servers recommendation we ordered the sweet corn panna cotta, which the entire corn (even the husk) is used! Sidney street has been famous for its French Onion soup for over 10+ years. So much so that it was the one place I'd recommend for any traveling co-workers, family, and friends. As petty as this might sound, they never bring it back or consistently. In the summer they will tell you fall, in the fall they'll tell you winter, and then the winter they don't have it. Many times we've returned just for that. Over the summer we attended from seeing the chefs social media and the amazing S'more's Baked Alaskan they promoted was not there. We continue every season to give them a try as the chefs social media especially in the summer time with their garden is growing - has great choices. But it seems that it's hit or miss. The menu stays about 90% the same time and time again, and the special dishes are what we come for as well. This time I give a 3 because we were sat by the door and it was freezing. The door is not properly sealed. The patrons next to us by the window kept their coats on. The draft under the table even with the heater on max did nothing. It was uncomfortable. My partners filet was very hard to cut. Maybe just luck of a bad butchers cut? I think it will be a long time until we return or recommend. Food is great, service is amazing, chef has the right idea. But please bring back the one nostalgic memory of Sidney Street that keeps people returning. This time the had "onion soup" no cheese no bread. "What?!...." Came here a little last minute on a Thursday night and grabbed a reservation easily online. We were seated right away. Street parking was fine. It was a dark intimate environment but not too dark to where I struggled to see the menu. It also never got too noisy which was nice. Our waiter was nice and helpful and answered all of our questions. I like how they bring out new utensils for each dish. We started with the veal dumplings as an app which is what the server recommended and they were delicious! The bread that came out after our appetizer was good too, especially the flavored butter. The Sommer sausage was as to be expected, I was hesitant to order it because I don't always love corn bread, but it was actually very nice. The cocktails they had listed didn't appeal to me and I wasn't in the mood for wine so I got a whiskey sour - and it was good, just didn't have the froth on top that some places do super well. The prices are on the higher end but make sense, with a large variety of price options. I would come here again if I had a special occasion and wanted to celebrate with some special food. Wow, house incredibly thought out & delicious each meal was. For starters, we got the ribs & lobster turnovers. Ribs have this caramelized sweet ?peanut butter type of tasting drizzle and the meat was flavorful. The lobster turnover was unique and just melts in your mouth. Our entrees came with soup or salad, we tried both and probably one of the best tomato soups I've ever had. Entree beef cheek was perfection. The tenderness of the meat mixed with flavors + cabbage carrots & potatoes was perfect. The roasted chicken was good, but nothing special. Finally made it to Sidney Street Cafe and it absolutely lived up to the up! We made a reservation for a special occasion. The room was a bit dark and the lights flickered some which made it feel a bit haunted, which I loved. Our server was really nice and helpful- although he did say everything was great which doesn't help you pick (he's right though - everything was great!). We started with the most popular appetizers, lobster turnovers and veal dumplings. Our waiter was nice enough to offer to add another dumpling so each of us got the same amount! Both were delicious but Id say the veal dumplings were our favorite! Sauce on the turnovers was amazing. For entrees, we tried the halibut, beef tenderloin, and raviolo (with carnitas and mushrooms). The ravioli was perfect, no surprise. Same for the halibut, light and delicious and gorgeous! My favorite was definitely the beef tenderloin - the wasabi crust was incredible and the potatoes it came with were flawless, I wanted MORE! I fear my words will not adequately encapsulate the true beauty of my short time at sidney street cafe. For this Benton Park gem is radiating love in every crevice. First, I need to start with the building. As much of Benton Park is, the building is old, but in the best possible way. Rustic stain glass adorns the top bar, exposed brick naked, but elegant. Deep, rich is used throughout. The dim lighting and rustic design make this the perfect date night spot, girls night out, or even family celebration. Next: the service. We had Mary and she was a ray of sunshine. First and foremost, incredibly respectful and mindful of the group offering answers to questions, not rushing, and provided extensive knowledge of the menu. It was quite clear she had a deep understanding of the menu and had experience guiding folks to dishes that will satiate their preferences. Oh, and the food? Superb. Every single bite I took was beautiful. Of course, we rocked with the lobster turnovers and veal dumplings--2 house favorites. Both superb. The turnovers were so fluffy, airy, and the fila dough was layered to perfection. The teriyaki glaze on the veal dumplings was a masterclass. The best dish, unanimously, was the rigatoni. It was creamy with the perfect amount of smoke from the duck and cracked pepper. The burger was likewise superb. It melted in your mouth between the fluffy bun. And, last, but certainly not least, the fettucine was a masterclass. Mussels and shrimp were cooked to perfection. A super light, refreshing dish. What a lovely place! We made reservations for a table for 6 for a friend's birthday last month. The server was fabulous, patient with us, and very helpful. He was knowledgeable of all the dishes and was able to answer our questions with ease! Inside, the vibes were immaculate. We came in wearing matching shirts, and there was another guest who complimented them. Every table was full. Also, it was a great experience because I didn't feel like I had to yell across the table. The food ordered: - Veal Dumplings - Lobster Turnover - Oysters - House Salad - Rigatoni - Bibimbap - Monk Fish - Burger (came with fries, not pictured) - Desserts (not sure if it's still on the menu, but one was like a blondie covered by marshmallow fluff that acted as the "smores" and the other dessert pictured was like a flan, panna cotta texture). Here recently for a birthday dinner for my stepmom - this is her favorite restaurant and I was happy to finally get to try it with her. The service was *great*, our server was very patient with the boomers and picky eaters in our group and didn't blink twice at our requests for more bread & butter (I seriously could eat my weight in these little rolls that come out before the meal!). I got the chorizo bucatini which was pretty tasty although I had entree envy when I saw the crab pasta my stepmom got. My dad had the steak which was cooked perfectly to his request (and believe me, if it wasn't, he would let you know), and my son opted for the duck breast, which he enjoyed. The portions are quite small, so you should prepare yourself for that (my son was like, "well, I enjoyed my tablespoon of polenta"), and it's definitely pricey. This isn't someplace I think I'd return to weekly or monthly, but it was a nice special occasion experience. read more

For entrees, we had the stuffed chicken and beef tenderloin with peppercorn sauce. Both were fantastic and cooked to perfection. Each came with a puree and veggies. Lastly for dessert, we opted for the pumpkin cheesecake and it was extremely fresh. They had just pulled the dish out of the oven and I think they prepare these made to order- it's a single circular portion, not a slice. Pumpkin cheesecake stole the show it was warm and creamy and had a delicious sauce and lots of spices. One of the best I've had. My girlfriend and I came here yesterday for a Valentine's Day dinner. We tried the lobster turnovers, the veal dumplings, the wagyu steak, the chicken fricasse, the valentines strawberry baileys, a cranberry lemon drink, a bacon maple syrup whisky, and the dessert of the 4 cups of crème brule teas. Every dish there was something more to love. Even down to the salad and the soup being the best middle dish that even packs a ton of tasteful punch. Our waiter was also amazing and we had such a pleasure taking her suggestions for dishes to try (especially the salad and the beignets). Also the cafe had many ambiance's from the entrance being a little bit more bright and communal, to the second and back rooms being more hidden within an dim with just enough music and space between the tables where you can enjoy the atmosphere without not being able to hear yourself think. Usually not a fine diner, but if you're coming for a holiday or an anniversary and don't mind knowing your gonna end up spending a bit for the best quality, this is the place to go. We ate here on a Saturday night around 7:30. It was my first visit and I've heard amazing things, so I was excited to try it out. We were promptly seated upon entry, although it's a little strange the hostess station is in the middle of the restaurant so it's confusing when you first walk in. The tables are thoughtfully spaced out, so you don't feel on top of each other. However it still gets extremely loud, so a few soft surfaces on the walls would be helpful. I had a few glasses of Sauvignon Blanc. It was just ok. I wish they had more options of wines by the glass. BF doesn't drink, so the bottle isn't an option for me. Food was tasty, but because BF is gluten intolerant, we were slightly limited. There were no gluten-free appetizer options aside from the cheese board, crudo, and Panisse, however it's fried in the same fryer as the lobster turnover, so that wasn't an option either. I'd highly recommend adding a few more gluten free options/substitutions to the menu and marking them. We shared the creamed brussels, Caesar salad, and beef tartare, sans the crostini for an appetizer. For entrees, we had the duck and filet béarnaise. We told Dave we planned on sharing everything when we ordered. He rang it in as a split order, so we were charged a fee for our steak being split. He forgot our duck, but we didn't mind since we had the steak to nosh. My only complaints about this is that we ordered tons of food and didn't ask for anything to be split. I feel like the split charge is typically reserved for when a couple wants to share one meal and the restaurant is losing out on money for the table. This was definitely not the case. BF had the peanut butter and jelly ice cream, and enjoyed it so much he had seconds! Dave was our server and was friendly and attentive. My only complaint would be that the servers be a bit more knowledgeable about gluten-free options and maybe specify when a table is sharing if they actually want it split up since it's an extra fee. read more

I really wanted to love our night at Sydney Street Cafe, but a few things missed the mark. The ambiance was dimly lit and intimate -- definitely sets the stage for a cozy dinner. Unfortunately, the vibe was thrown off a bit by a flickering light right above our table that never got fixed. Combine that with a super wobbly table and slower service, and it was hard to stay fully relaxed. We had to request the bread, which typically comes out at the start of the meal, so things got off to a slower start than expected. Drink-wise, the Strawberry Collins was decent (3.5/5), but the Spring Rhubarb Smash didn't quite hit the right notes for me (2.5/5). For food, the duck breast had a nice flavor profile but the texture was off -- not as crispy as I'd hoped. On the upside, the panisse and lobster turnover appetizers were flavorful and definitely the highlight of the meal. Next time, I'll probably keep it simple and just go for a burger. TLDR: Perfect date night restaurant. Request a table away from the window. Ask for Mary as your server. Order the Lobster turnover and veil dumpling, or the sampler if you want to try both (or just 5 orders of the dumplings by itself). The Ribs are also out of the world good. This quaint littler restaurant is tucked away in the middle of a neighborhood, but street parking is plentiful. You walk into the bar section of the restaurant first, and have to go in a little bit before you hit the host stand. We were warmly greeted and the whole vibe of the place was perfect for a date night or celebration. We were sat next to the outside windows, which I would say is definitely brighter than the rest of the restaurant. So if you want a dimmer table, request a table farther in. I do want to give an absolute shoutout to Mary, our amazing server, who went above and beyond the whole night. She was always smiling and positive, and had amazing knowledge of the whole menu. We ended up going with a couple appetizers that included the lobster turnovers and veil dumplings. I knew I wanted to get those as those two seemed quite popular with other Yelpers. Mary suggested their sampler instead, which is the same two dishes combined into a smaller portion. It was perfect. We didn't know how big the sampler would be and ordered the ribs as well. The ribs actually turned out to be my favorite dish as it reminded me of the exact Asian style ribs I've had before at my favorite restaurant back when I lived in KC! Our entrees both came with a soup or salad, along with the most amazing bread on the side. We got the Beef Tenderloin in Wasabi and the Lamb Wellington. The tenderloin was amazing and the menu may tempt you with that lobster bearnaise, but don't sleep on the wasabi option. I wish I would have liked the lamb more, but found it to be a bit chewy, but overall had great flavors. We ended the night with a complimentary dessert for my birthday, which was a great way to end a solid first experience here! To be honest, I think we over ordered the amount of food two people could eat. 1 appetizer plus the given soup and bread with the entree would have been perfect. My husband and I marked this place as the top place we wanted to try in St. Louis after reading all of the reviews- thanks fellow Yelpers you were right on point. From the moment we walked in until we left, we felt welcomed like locals. You must try the lobster turnovers! Fluffy, full of flavor and a perfect sauce to dip anything into! We also had the crab pasta with brown butter which was savory and a little sweet- perfect combo. My husband loved the patty melt and I enjoyed stealing the super yummy aoli. I can't wait to have a reason to head back to St. Louis because this neighborhood gem would be the first place I visited. Such amazing food with a rotating menu. The staff is very professional and helpful with extensive knowledge of the menu. Its is a fancier resturant and it has a nice back room and a bar to sit at as well. read more

A very unique menu that was all very impressive. We spilt a lot of the apps and enjoyed everything we especially the lobster turnovers. The Caesar salad was AMAZING, and the spaghetti alla chimaera was such a good recommendation by our waiter. read more

We had a party of six and liberally ordered various items. All were fantastic! We loved that pasta came in smaller portions and the wine list had affordable choices. The atmosphere always feels high-end yet intimate. It's a restaurant that has acoustics where you can actually hear everyone in your party. Service was as impeccable as the food.
