I never expected to have Chinese food in Montana, much less to find it somewhat decent! I came to West Yellowstone on a trip, and the first place my group and I went was Chinatown Restaurant. At first, I was skeptical about the restaurant, so I kept my expectations low. However, once I tried the food, I had to admit my expectations were actually met. The variety of food they had was incredible. From pig feet to mapo tofu, all the dishes we got were of decent quality; dare I say it's comparable to Bay Area Chinese restaurants. Especially for the amount we paid, the portions were VERY generous. I personally liked the mapo tofu the best, but all the other dishes really came to my liking. Excellent value for the area! I am shocked by the low reviews on this restaurant, but I assume it came down to bad customer service and the low "aesthetic" of Chinatown Restaurant. I personally didn't experience anything like that. The workers did everything they could to welcome us and prepare such a large amount of food for us. We came here depsite the low reviews since we were craving Asian food on vacation. We had a nice time here, and all the food satisfied our cravings. Portions are smaller, we ordered 10 dishes for 7 people (we were also very hungry from a long day exploring Yellowstone). Specifically we recommend any stir-fried dishes, the combination fries rice is good and has wok hay. Food came out very fast, probably under 5 minutes. We had the best vegetarian meal here and we are from bay area where there is plenty of authentic Asian food. Their beans were so delicious and they have this house made chilli oil crunch which is absolutely Delicious, flavorful and a hint of spice. The lo mein and fried rice was also very good. While staying at West Yellowstone, it was disgraceful that this local Chinese restaurant refused to accommodate us with our service dog, blatantly ignoring basic disability rights and common decency. I am surprised by all the 1-star reviews because my family and I enjoyed a nice dinner here without any issues. The staff went above and beyond with their kindness (checking in on us many times) and were accommodating to our requests (less salt in the dishes). They were even open to customizing some of the dishes to our liking (ex. we ordered a custom mixed vegetable dish because there was one vegan in the party). We tried the steamed trout (market price; was $70 for us) which was enough for 2 people to share. My parents seemed to enjoy it and finished it completely. Overall, the food tasted great and was made reasonably quickly (about 15 minutes), and service was impeccable. A few other things to note--someone started smoking toward the end of the visit, so it started to smell like smoke. As a disabled combat veteran traveling with a fully trained service animal, I was publicly denied access and humiliated by the owner and staff at Chinatown Restaurant, located at 110 Madison Avenue, West Yellowstone, MT 59758. Despite calmly explaining the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the staff and owner not only ignored federal law, but singled me out in front of other patrons. The owner, who I was told goes by Liu, was dismissive and uninformed, and refused to accommodate me. Their phone number is (406) 646-7088. This is not just poor hospitality--it's illegal discrimination. To make matters worse, I learned they operate multiple restaurants in the area. The West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce should be ashamed to allow this kind of business to represent the community. This place is alright. I went on a family trip to the Northwest states in 2017 through one of those Chinese tour groups and I remember this was the first restaurant of that trip. The restaurant was a bit small and was quickly packed especially with so many tourists dining in at once. This wasn't an issue for us in particular since (I'm assuming) the tour agency reserved out seats for us in advance. The service was not bad from my experience (our orders came out quickly, maybe about 10 minutes) and the food tasted okay... Just too salty. I ordered the shrimp and General Tso chicken - they were good and cooked well from what I remember. The fish was very salty. Seeing how the tour group seems to come here as part of their usual schedule (tour lead talked about coming here many times in his previous trips), the prices for this restaurant is a bit ridiculous. $2 for a teabag and need to pay for the bowl of rice. 5.5/10 read more

Saw this place and passed the first night in West Yellowstone based on the star rating. Then while sitting at another sad restaurant I won't mention nearby I looked at the reviews expecting a laugh and saw a lot of good reviews recently. Convinced the rest of my group to try it and was floored at how good it was. Two menus, traditional fare that most Chinese places in the US have and a page of specials for those more versed in mainland Chinese food. Excellent. That is all I can say. The short ribs and fried chicken from the specials menu were both phenomenal. Orange chicken, lemon chicken, Mongolian beef, and pot stickers were all top tier. Unique, but equally good to the best places I have had in Chicago, San Francisco, or Seattle. Better than anything I've had in LA. Maybe someday I will get over to China to make a comparison. Lol. Ate there twice in three days and would have gone back for a 4th if I didn't make my way down to the Grand Tetons after the second visit. I look forward to patronizing you again. My Chinese family and I stopped here after a tiring Yellowstone day. Giving the roadtrip diet of heavy carbs, meats, and sodium, we wanted a more balanced meal. The restaurant actually has 2 separate menus: a more Americanized one and a Chinese one. We ordered from both. We ordered 3 dishes (mapo tofu, Buddha vegetables, and black bean fish) as well as a mixed fried rice. Great tasting dishes overall. I was especially happy with the fish dish. The prices weren't the lowest but the flavor and portion sizes were white decent. This Chinese restaurant was a pleasant surprise that the rating of the place is so low and the area is teeming with tourist traps. read more

It was shocking to see so many bad reviews. I just searched this restaurant when I was about to leave an amazing review ( which I normally don't even bother to do so, and this is my longest review for a restaurant) for them. Maybe I got lucky or they have recently improved the service and quality of food, I don't know, but my experience here was beyond my expectation. It's not your usual fancy Chinese restaurant serve with white table cloth or Michelin 3 stars restaurant, but it's not exactly a holes on the wall type either. At Yellowstone I expect nothing like this even existed ( delicious Chinese food and overall experience). When I walked in, I was greeted by all staffs, not just one but at least 2 or 3, the restaurant was half full, everyone was attentive and friendly. I ordered 2 chef specialty on the menu, which was stir fried elk( I actually had no idea it was gonna be stir fried, because it was not mentioned on the menu), the other one is fish fillet with black bean sauce, and one stir fried spinach with shrimp. My favorite dish was this stir fried elk, the flavor was black pepper sauce with ginger, it was mouthwatering! The meat was so tender! It was truest mind-blowing good!! The elk was unbelievably tender and juicy, for a second I feel like I was eating beef but only better! The fish fillet with vegetables was pretty good too, the seasoning was very powerful( maybe a little bit too salty but it just making you keep wanting to eat more. The spinach with shrimp was just as good. I mean you can't really go wrong with stir fried vegetable. The shrimp was probably not the fresh caught, probably from a frozen pack, but it was expected. :) The price rage could be a bit high( for those specialties like fresh trout($80) elk($39) black bear(I forgot how much), but you are in a middle of nowhere, a national park, what else can you ask for more? If you want a cheap meal, easy American food, go get the pizza at the corner so it doesn't break the bank. Overall, I'm very satisfied and grateful with my experience here, thank you for great service and tasty food, I'll recommend this to everyone and I'll come back again without a doubt! read more

Excellent Chinese cuisine. Service was great, and food was even better. I was extremely apprehensive to go, since the reviews were on the lower tier. I am so glad I went with what my nose smelled while walking by. While waiting for our food to come out, I overheard one of the main lady workers talking with another customer, stating that the restaurant changed ownership about two years ago. That being said, maybe that is where the lower ratings originated from. I simply can not see how this amazing food can get lower ratings. Maybe the people rating it low are used to calling Panda Express Chinese food, IDK but this is not Panda Express. Leaps and bounds from something mediocre as such. We stopped here on a trip to Yellowstone. I'm so glad we didn't look at the reviews first. The food was plentiful and delicious! The staff was overly accommodating and helpful. We ordered the family dinner and it was too much food. The broccoli beef, Szechuan chicken, and human beef were all delicious. They also have pricier bear, elk, and bison dishes. Your freaking menu said I am going to pay you 15% for tips so how about showing me that you are worth it?! I was totally done with talking to him after ordering 4 dishes. And I was so mad I lost my appetite. My mom was hungry so I stayed. Anyway, food came up like two minutes after we ordered. We think the chef probably had everything pre-cooked and he/she just stir fried the cooked food when we ordered. The flavors were ok. #2 and #4 looked almost the same except #4 had some squid pieces and it came in the sizzling dish. We had 0 service from anyone after the food were served. My sister paid and told the girl working/eating in the front with short short(host?) that the waiter was very rude. She repeated that to the guy while the he was taking order from another table. I have read some of the reviews of this restaurant and it is very hard to believe that anybody would say anything positive about this joint. When we walked in there was a very pungent smell in the dining room. According to my wife she thought it was the smell of burnt dry chilies. I thought it smelled like shrimp shells. I should have walked out then. My bad. We noticed that the carpet was old and dingy. Thet have probably done NO renovation to this place since they opened. We ordered egg fried rice and Mongolian beef. As we waited for the food, my wife noticed that a buss boy was standing next to the register with a large tray that had numerous small bowls in it. He was inspecting them one by one, and as he found that apparently the bowls had food particles, he would scrape them off with his finger nails and then he would stack them up!! He was doing this in plain sight of the customers!!! Totally unbelievable and gross. We were getting ready to leave when the server arrived with our food. No more than a few minutes after ordering. The fried rice was red, something which I had never seen. It was mushy, and totally flavorless! The Mongolian beef (if you want to call it that) was simply disgusting. The beef tasted like plastic. It was by far the worst dinner we have ever been served. This was not by any definition Chinese food. They need an intervention by a professional Chinese chef. These people have no idea what Chinese food tastes like. What they are serving is just nasty. To top it off the server gave me the bill for the entire amount. We had left all the food behind and the only thing we had was Jasmine tea. They had the nerve to charge for the entire bill. My wife wanted to argue about it, but I decided to pay and leave before I created a scene. I hope they get to enjoy the money they stole from us.
