The Hot Reuben sandwich came with potato chips and a pickle spear (on the side) on marbled bread. Good portion. The El Sur Grande Chicken Nachos was a serving size for many people! I didn't expect how large the portion was going to be but grande is in the name. :) Nachos were accompanied with jalapeños, pickled onions and the drizzly kind of cheese (not shredded). Yum! The fries were yummy, thin & crisp and came with ketchup and bbq sauce. I asked for ranch too but I preferred the BBQ sauce. Large portion for the fries! The outdoor patio was closed due to renovations I believe so we sat in the small nook with the wing spanned condor on the wall. I learned about condors while on our little lunch break. The food was served on paper / earth friendly products. A small convenience store is attached for swag or snacks. Don't expect much from the restroom. If you're looking at the resto it is on the left back area. One big room with a toilet & urinal. The floors where muddy and wet so be careful. Many options for beer on tap. For being one of the very few food options in Big Sur, it was a nice surprise to find this place. The Taphouse is half restaurant and half convenience store. It was pretty cool looking around the store while waiting for our food to come out. The menu was surprisingly sizeable, but the food was delicious! It was honestly some of the best onion rings I've ever had. Our sandwiches were also good as well. Though the service was very kind, it did take some time for our food to be received. But that was really the only gripe. Also note that it's a single bathroom out in the back, so be prepared to wait if there's a good amount of people. Was sightseeing through Big Sur and meant to stop at Big Sur Bakery for a snack. It was raining and turned a lot too early and ended up at Big Sur Taphouse instead. Didn't regret it at all. The nachos with Beyond Meat burger was the perfect afternoon snack shared with one or two other people. It's massive topped with your favorite toppings including house-made pickled jalapeños and salsa. BST has a covered and heated back patio and is also connected to the Big Sur Deli for your additional needs. Never noticed this place before since it is kind of hidden away near the post office on Hwy 1 and the dark wood buildings and signs kind of blend in to the forest. It was recommended to us or we would likely have missed it, and glad we made the effort to stop by this local winner. They have a modest list of food with about a dozen beers on tap. We had the fish tacos which were awesome! The beer lineup was pretty good, half were pretty basic and the other half were interesting. There are tables inside, but the patio area out back is super cool. They are pet friendly out back and we brought our dog there, going up the steps to a garden-like setting. The view from the patio is up over the roof of the taphouse towards the mountains to the east (not to the ocean to the west, there is a mountain separating the highway from the ocean at this location so no coastal view). Lots of beers to choose from here! There is a great outdoor space which was important for Covid restrictions. They had a good line system to keep everyone spaced out and safe when ordering. They had the outdoor seating spread out as well. They have a TV outside which was good for sports. There is food next door you can order if you want. We had already had lunch so we only had beer. We each tried two (can't remember which now) and they were tasty. Staff was friendly and helpful in choosing drinks. We stopped by on a roadtrip for some food, drinks and a place to relax out of the car for a while. When you enter it's filled with regulars of the Taphouse which is usually a good sign but not so much unfortunately for us. We immediately were given weird looks from patrons of the bar as if we weren't supposed to be there but nonetheless we carried on by finding a spot on the cool looking outdoor patio and ordering. The cider was tasty and the chicken strips were decent but it was not reasonably priced. And that maybe because of where they are located that it takes a lot for food to get delivered (delivery shipping costs bumps up prices, things of that nature) so I get it may not be their fault. But my biggest takeaway from this place was the restroom was disgusting. And that's unfortunate. There was urine all over the floor everywhere, toilet paper scattered, urine in the urinal overflowing and no soap to wash your hands. For $17 for four chicken strips and cold fries and a $10 cider I would want the bathroom to be a little cleaner. Overall you get what you get there. Big Sur Taphouse? More like Big Sur Traphouse! Stopped to eat lunch on my way back to West Hollywood and had heard great things about this place. The photos online looked amazing and the reviews were strong. I came in an had a nice cold Pilsner they had on tap. I had a burger and it was just what I needed to fuel me on my drive back. This spot has a locals only kind of vibe. You walk in and they know you're not from around there. Maybe they new I was a tourist because I wasn't wearing a flat billed hat or maybe it was because I was wearing my yellow crocs (Hey I was on vacation!!). The locals were pretty rowdy and when I went to the bathroom 3 of the men were doing something in the bathroom stall together. And as an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community I can assure it wasn't anything like that. I won't say what it was but it was very illegal and they were snorting it. That is why I called it the Big Sur Trap House. I didn't want to speak to the manager and tell on the locals in fear of being labeled a male Karen. Look, I can not hold the establishment responsible for the actions of there patrons especially at lunch time. All in all the food was good and the beer was cold. Prices were reasonable and the lunch time stop was convenient. It would be a full 5 star review had I not used the bathroom why by the way was pretty clean. read more

This is my GO TO SPOT for Big Sur. If you are familiar with Big Sur, Restaurants are owner priced and food can feel very average for what you are paying for. Not here. I have eaten at the Big Sur Tap House well over 10 times and I have never been disappointed. I have tried a lot of different items, all are delicious, but my favorite is the Bixby Pulled Pork Sandwich. Might be one of my favorite sandwiches out there. The bbq sauce is sweet and tangy -'d they always add a char to the pork which gives it great added flavor. This place isn't cheap, but it's Big Sur, the food is of high quality and the portions are enormous. They also have some of the best beers always rotating and always a huge and varied selection. Featuring a beautiful outdoor patio with tables that have been arranged for social distancing, the venue was exactly what we had been looking for. The service was attentive and friendly, and the food was both delicious and plentiful - score!! For our meal, we shared fish tacos, chips & salsa, a delicious juicy burger, and some great beers on tap. It was all so good that all the plates were virtually licked clean by the end of our meal ;-) Tip: This place is in Big Sur, where everything costs several times more than it does in most other places. Popular spot along hwy 1, this place is right across one of the Big Sur state parks, and close to many great vista points. It is a convenient spot to grab a lunch, or even a beer at the end of a good hiking or beach day. There is another area for parking just off the lot right in front of the strip, so don't be worried if the place seems packed! We came here to get a late lunch to go; saw that they had verve nitro brew and got that as well. They have quite a few vegetarian friendly option, and I had the beyond burger, which came with chips and a pickle. While I'm deeply in the "impossible meat" camp and generally dislike beyond burgers, they did a great job -- the burger was crispy and juicy (even if it tastes like a beyond patty), and overall it was a satiating lunch. They have seating out back, and very many people seemed to be heading on back to consume their food and beer. We didn't check out the space due to our general uneasiness with crowds, but I'm sure it's great especially when the weather is nice and the world is in a better shape. As for now, I'm just glad to have a great local restaurant right next to all the amazing nature! read more

I offered the hot chicken sandwich (I believe it is only available on weekends), and it was very tasty. Not too hot, but the spice really adds a lot of flavor to the sandwich. Everything comes with chips, not my favorite but they're there. Also tried the Bahnmi, which was very good, I recommend. Portion sizes are very big, which is basically the only flaw I saw there. It's a decent option for lunch or dinner in Big Sur, but definitely wouldn't be my first choice. After hiking Pfeiffer Big State Park, your girl worked up an appetite. Yes, I was hangry! I remembered passing by this place on the wow to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and decided to give them a try. It's conveniently located off of highway one but can be easily missed if you're not paying attention. Just watch out for the sign that reads "Big Sur Center" on the side of the road. There aren't a lot of parking spots in the small lot, but I lucked out and got one right as somebody was leaving. Walking in, the restaurant seems pretty small. And while it is pretty cozy inside, their back patio is pretty big! It's actually kind of hidden, but you can get back there by walking through the door passed the bar. What I really liked about the inside was the fun little hut with covered booths that you can eat in. It almost reminded me of a tree house or a shed. It was pretty dark in there, but so fun. Well, you know I had to sit in there after seeing it! It was too cool for me not to. At the bar, they have about 10 rotating beers on tap. They don't keep a list of their taps, but you can sample them to see what you like. I ended up having a pineapple sour from Alvarado Street Brewing and it was pretty legit. There's a couple of TV's inside and they were playing a few basketball games while I was there. It seems like a great spot for the locals to come and chill out. For lunch, I went with the Reuben sandwich which came with pub chips. At first I was kind of concerned that it came with chips and not fries. But after trying to devour that meaty sammy, I had not complaints about the chips. There's no doubt that the Reuben was meatier than ever! They seriously loaded it up with meat! The problem for me was that it was a bit too dry. The flavor was there, but it was hard to fully enjoy it because of the dryness. Eating salty potato chips with it didn't really help either. The service was pretty non existent. The staff was young, maybe college kids, who really didn't seem interested in helping anyone. They were more interested in their own conversations amongst each other than with the customers who were dining there. All in all, it was solid but just ranked pretty average for me. I might stop by again in the future to try something other than a Reuben, but it'll be after I explore a few other dining options in the area first. read more
