Their taco salad is one heck of a meal. For some weird reason I have been ordering taco salads my entire life and at this point it's to find the greatest of all. A lot of places offer them but they sleep on their potential. This place takes their taco salads seriously and for that, I commend them. I was charged 12.95 though the other day for a chicken taco salad which is clearly marked 10.95. I think I got a 2 dollar charge because I wanted black beans instead of refried which seems strange. Sadly, I have to give this place 3 stars. I'm torn because it could almost be a two star place. We ate there last week and it was excellent. Did take out again the next day and it was meh. This is one of the best Mexican dives we've found so far in the past 3 years of vacationing in Cape May and we always look forward to returning. We ordered a burrito and a nacho on our most recent visit and both were delicious. They obviously take pride in their food. The staff is friendly (and patient when you can't decide what to order). The atmosphere is extremely laid back and the surf decor is fun to look at. The only two things we can say negative about the places is 1.) it is cash only and 2.) there are a limited selection of beverages (no Coke or Pepsi products), but don't let that deter you - the food stands on it's own. read more

Lot of mediocre reviews, don't feel they deserve it. We rolled in on a Saturday night, ordered for 6 people, food service was prompt. Got guac and salsa; salsa was OK (it's a bad year for tomatoes) but the guac was tremendous, super creamy and lots of garlic. Kids got little burritos and quesadillas and they were sated. Adults got the fried fish burritos and tacos, both really great. The curry slaw pulls it together well. In and out fast, fresh food, fair prices. Give it a shot man. read more

I guess I had high expectations going in. Yes the surfer decor and art for sale is cute, but you can put lipstick on a pig....... Still a pig. Our party had two tables and both tables were very sticky, Some of us had to use a baby wipe to clean our forearms. (Gross) It is uncomfortably HOT inside, we all were sweating. Big wave burritos should pass out ice water while their customers wait 20+ minutes. There were 3 people behind the counter and it took that long to make a $10 burrito?? As for the food..... BLAND, chewy chicken, undercooked rice, hard tortilla chips. They microwaved the nachos until the cheese was actually hard, the hard cheese caused the even harder tortilla chips to become a large mass of an inedible mess. Unless you want a cracked tooth don't order nachos. The burrito bowl had at least a half cup of corn on top... Seriously?! The utensils and condiments are on top of the trash bin, I did not enjoy filling up the hot sauce cups on the trash. (Gross) Not to mention we had to run across the parking lot to the wawa's where the nearest ATM; cash only I WISH we just stayed at wawa's (again, where the ATM is located) I could have had a delish Caesar wrap and a fountain drink for less than $7. Put it this way, if you're a fan of chipotle's vibe and taste then don't bother.... In fact I want my money back!! I haven't regretted eating out in a long time. Very over priced for the below mediocre experience. We could have enjoyed a more formal dinner at an air conditioned restaurant for the amount we spent. I'd like to add that I've read a lot of the positive reviews on here, I really have a feeling that they are the actual employees and/or friends of the owner trying to boost the rating. Willy: I don't want to be too harsh but it is gonna be pretty tough. The atmosphere was some kind of hawaiian surf shop theme park but done executed by a 1st year student of interior design. We had a veggie burrito and big bean bucket or something with a similar silly name like that. The ingredients seemed like they were straight from the acme across town. No one preparing the food had any experience cooking real Mexican food, it tasted like the food was simply assembled from a kit of parts as if one were making a model airplane. There was nothing new or interesting about it, no fresh or local ingredients, no twist on the standard recipes, not even simple mexican done well. I would say just a step above cafeteria food and wayyy too expensive for what you get. My judgment on this place......sucked! Ceelee: I couldn't bare the food. I can't even star it because there was no dimension or authentic flavor to the food at all. The cheese reminded me of school cafeteria cheese. But..... the interior was cool and personalized with the surfboards used from around the world. If this actually wanted to be an option for great Mexican in CM, the owners would have to actually eat a real burrito, maybe open a recipe book, and buy some real food ingredients. Pretty good stuff! While visiting Cape May, I went to this place with my sister. And you know what? It wasn't half bad! I always have trouble finding places to eat in Cape May. Let's be honest--there's not much to choose from. But Big Wave Burritos has a great selection and their food is fresh and tasty. Very flavorful. I had a burrito bowl and it was probably better than Qdoba or Chipotle. I enjoyed it and am happy to have found a place to grab a quick bite while in Cape May. As others have stated, cash only. The first time we came here, it was Taco Tuesday. The place was hopping. We waited in line for a few minutes, ordered and received our delicious food promptly and enjoyed.....that was in the spring. Apparently, they are NOT prepared for summer! Today we waited 35 minutes in line, there were very few customers, only TWO workers and it was HOT AS HECK in that place! Get some air conditioning already! All total, we spent over an hour at Big Wave- all for THREE TACOS!! Don't go here, the food isn't truly Mexican at all and the waiting time is 30 min or more and it's cash only so be ready to drive around looking for a ATM. To be honest the place has an awful atmosphere and its food is more like a school cafeteria quality level than a restaurant level. I want to love Big Wave. I really do. But I just can't. The first time I went, probably about two years ago, I ordered the standard three chicken tacos. After waiting more than 45 minutes, they finally came. They were so spicy that I could barely finish them. Later that night, I got sick. I recently went for Taco Tuesday ($2 per taco). I tried the beef, and made sure that the salsa (which I thought was the spicy part) was completely left off. This time the wait was more reasonable, about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the spice rendered the tacos uneatable. However, the one redeeming factor is the Rio Bowl, a large portion of a smoothie-like acai berry base, topped with bananas, honey, and granola, among other things. This was not my first time into Big Wave Burrito but I will tell you that, as ALWAYS, it was absolutely fantastic, delicious, friendly, & all around atmospheric. I was wandering around town with my 6-year-old nephew on errands & he said he was hungry so I decided to stop in for a quick bite. The food is a TexMex- based menu and there is not a single item on the menu, both in food & their incredibly delicious smoothies, that will not have you coming back for more and more and more. We did not have a lot of time and it was near dinnertime so it was a perfect spot for a quick snack. We ordered their Chips & Salsa with a side of Jumbo Guacamole. Everything is totally homemade and seriously flavor packed. The chips are crispy, perfectly sized and absolutely not oily at all. They are not over-salted or too thin. The guacamole is chunky and flavorful throughout. The salsa is fresh and diced but a bit on the side of spicy so keep that in mind. My nephew tried it but, at 6 years old, it was too spicy for his tongue. But it is really really good and definitely worth a try. Their burritos are out of this world and I could not resist but to order one as take out for lunch tomorrow. So a fish burrito is what landed in my meal for the following day. Their burritos are huge and packed with ingredients! The prices are incredibly reasonable and it will definitely not break your bank. The room is a big open room with a counter in the back where you order and they will bring your food out to your table. It is pretty much all self serve on a very rustic looking table which is fantastic. The restaurant is extremely clean and very accommodating. They go out of their way for your needs. The walls are loaded with paraphernalia that reminds you of the beach (in a non-cheesy full of lighthouses and herons kind of way which plagues the entire islandvof Cape May....yuck!!). There is a TV showing surf movies and shows constantly which just adds to the atmosphere. The ceiling is covered in surfboards. It feels like you're on a tropical island tucked away in a cove ready for a great experience. Cape May is good but very tired these days with the same old same old boring nothing-to-rave-about food scene and this place is an absolutely PERFECT BREAK from that pretentiousness. And I mentioned their smoothies earlier, definitely give them a try because they are equally as creative & out of this world!! They are also open for breakfast. The Big Wave is one of the chillest places in town, it has a great atmosphere with a lot of local surf photos, boards, and local art work. Their new Organic menu is awesome, from the homemade taco bowls and chips to the great Smoothies, everything was perfect. They had some really good surf videos and the very polite Mexican Guy who made my food told me all about the new menu while the young man behind the counter talk to my son about the hand made skateboards in the front of the store... over all great expierence we will definitely be back. read more
