If you visit here before you do the real one in Nashville don't compare because they are not the same. And Nashville in my opinion you could lose alot of service from this location. The website hours claim they are open until 1 am on Thursday - Saturday. Me and a group of friends stopped by about 11:30 pm to finish Bloomington's Ale Trail on Saturday night and we were turned away at the door. This place has an amazing patio, complete with a beer garden featuring live music. The decor and look of the building is also super cool. Quaff On beers are great, but I appreciate that they have other selections other than their own. They have specials every day of the week (Sunday's are $10 half carafes of mimosas!). I tried their michelada as well and it was interesting. Instead of using a basic lager, they mix their house made michelada mix with their Busted Knuckle (porter). It tasted like creamy rosemary tomato soup with beer, not bad. If you're just looking for something to snack on, ask your server for the beer snack menu. The feta and red pepper dip is FABULOUS! I was really disappointed by this experience, despite some bright spots. Most of the ingredients were okay, but everything I tasted displayed a sloppy lack of concern for ingredients or procedures. Every dish displayed at least one very basic failure. 1. Everything started with the poutine. The gravy was the standard brown packaged stuff, far too salty, strewn over waxy, undercooked wedges of potato. Real cheese curds were used, but were poorly cut such that they didn't separate. 2. The patty on the JB burger was delicious but crumbly, with a lot of umami and a slick, delicious mouthful. The bun was starchy and unremarkable and a slice of mealy tomato had been included for whatever reason. I would've been satisfied except that the caramelized onions were mostly papery, inedible onion skin. That's inexcusable. 3. The tiny ramekin of kettle chips dusted with an unidentifiable and largely flavorless powder was kinda pointless. I didn't detect any of the "truffled" flavor. 4. The haricots verts had the flavor of burnt paper and were far too acrid to eat. 5. The refried beans were gritty, dry, and bizarrely sweet. They had no richness or moisture in them at all, and I don't think the white cheese sprinkled on top was the advertised cotija. 6. The avocado served on the tacos was badly underripe. 7. The corn tortillas on the tacos were not heated enough or properly; like any cold, unoiled corn tortilla they had cracked when they were folded into the metal taco rack. read more

Great food, great service. Our server was super helpful with recommendations and seemed to have a sixth sense on when he should refill our water. We started off with the buffalo wings. They were tender and had the perfect amount of spice -- two very important qualities of good wings. We were told that they were smoked on-site, a testament which was confirmed by the taste. For the entree, I had the triple B burger (suggested to me by the server) and I could solidly say it is among the top 5 burgers I've ever had. The flavors were surprisingly delicate, the melted brie and fruit complementing the hearty but subtle patty. For desert I got the "cookies and cream" which does not aim to deceive. It was a warm, gooey, baked-to-order cookie with ice/whipped cream on top. It was so good it made me rethink my stance on life. If you come here, get that desert. read more

Big Woods offers a wide selection of bar style food (burgers etc), plus flatbread pizzas and salads. There isn't a lot for vegetarians or vegans, but there is a black bean burger and a vegetarian pizza. The salads sounded good, but didn't seem like the ideal food to pair with beer. And let's be real here, the reason people go to Big Woods brewery is for the beer. If you go, try the bartenders choice of six small glasses. I've done this on two separate visits with variable results. On my first visit I thought the beer was amazing, and on the second, I wasn't as impressed. Perhaps it depends on what's on tap, who the bartender is, or perhaps my tastes are changing to prefer less of the super hoppy beers typically featured by craft beer establishments such as this one. The little glasses come out on the tray which is labeled with the beer names, and it is super fun to try them all on and figure out what particular type of beer each one is. Service was cheerful, and our particular server was very knowledgeable both about the many beers on the menu as well as the food. She took the time to explain the characteristics of the 12 different beers in our two tastings flights.The only part of the service which was less than positive was the hostess, who seemed flustered, and had us wait for a considerable period of time even though there were clearly tables available outside on the patio and when we were seated three were open. Perhaps they need a better system to track available tables? We enjoyed the woodsman pizza, which had a delicious balsamic glaze that gave it a unique sweetness, and vegetable nachos. We finished our meal with the bag of mini donuts, which is even more delicious than I had expected, served with a liquor based hazelnut dipping sauce. Big Woods has a lovely patio with shaded tables perfect for a summer evening. There is also a beer garden behind the restaurant, though they do not offer the full menu of food there. The interior is cozy and warm on a winters night. read more

The one good thing the place has going for it is that the beer is excellent--better than Upland in town. The food is mediocre though. Wasn't a huge fan of the pulled pork, and the nachos were just OK. The main problem with the place is that it's overpriced and not comparable to other pubs in town. For instance, the nachos I ordered were $11, and you can get equally good ones at Upland for far less. The portion size on this dish was also more like an appetizer, which made the price even more unacceptable. The owners should check out similar pubs in town and consider similar prices. I'm not likely to go back until the food quality and portion sizes increase, and the prices decrease. read more

When this place first opened (as Quaff On) there were a couple rough patches and I decided to re-visit a few months later. Now that the place has time to settle in (and rebrand as Big Woods), there's a big back patio for tons more outdoor seating; the front entrance is relocated for cozier tables near the front window, and the menu has grown to offer an impressive--but not overwhelming--selection of pub food. Similarly diverse is the tap list, which includes a variety of outside breweries as well as in-house beers. The location is conveniently close to Kirkwood without being right on the main drag in proximity to some louder college bars. It's also a nice alternative to Runcible around the corner, or even Upland for that matter. One thing I can't quite get past is how annoying some of the staff are, which comes down to random chance. You might get someone knowledgable and helpful, or you might get someone who knows virtually nothing about beer and comes to interrupt your conversation every 3 or 4 minutes to ask if you need anything else. Hopefully Big Woods can learn to train their staff better, because apart from that, they have a good thing going. read more

We're seniors, tourists, stopped in Bloomington, heard it was a beautiful town. Big Woods had good reviews. We arrived on a Monday at 6:40 pm. Lots of empty tables inside and out, but had to wait a half hour for a table. Finally we were seated, but no silverware, no water, no waitress. Waited and waited. I guess we were invisible. We left to get dinner at McDonalds. On the way out I complained to the Big Woods host, who responded with a sarcastic smile. We were happy to leave Bloomington. read more

Had a really good time here. Ordered the Big Time (?) burger, was fantastic. Cooked very well, toppings were great, bistro sauce was phenomenal. Had the fries as a side, a bit over cooked and could use some seasoning but not bad. For appetizers, for the pulled pork nachos (10/10, absolutely recommend) and the Bavarian pretzel (8/10, good but nothing special. Beer cheese sauce was fantastic though). Desert was the cookie skillet, very good but generic, also the donut holes were quite good. Star of the meal was the burger and the nachos. Delicious food, sub-par service. My mom, underage siblings and I (total party of 4) went here on a summer evening where there was live music on the deck. We put our name in, and sat in the waiting area. I overhear an older gentleman (who put their name in after us) tell one of the hostesses (there were two, one I assume was more of a manager and/or was training the other girl) that he knows the guy playing music, I didn't hear how he knew him. Okay, nothing out of the ordinary. At this point, my mom, sister and I had been waiting for about 30-40 minutes for a table (EXTREMELY limited seating). We get excited because we see a table outside has left. It took a while to be bussed, and then the assumed-newer hostess sat the other party of four, with the guy who said he knew the musician, and then came back. We were the only ones in the waiting area so I asked if they had had a reservation... "No! Oh my gosh I'm so sorry! I accidentally sat them before you!" Yes I know. I saw and heard a lot of that exchange. At that point, we were 45 minutes into the wait in downtown Bloomington. If we had gone anywhere else, we would have had to wait about as long. At this point, we hoped we'd be sat sooner rather than later. Another 20 minutes goes by and finally we are sat. We order our food. The waiter "disappeared" for a little bit when we conveniently needed refills (YES I understand that servers get busy with other duties, HOWEVER, 1) I have serving experience and 2) he didn't have that big of a section and everyone in his section had food or had had food cleared away). When he was available, he was conversational, polite, knowledgeable and good to my 7 y.o. sister. Beer was OK, food was excellent, service was... well, you get the idea. Won't be going back. Quaff On! is hand down one of my favorite places in Bloomington. From food to beer to service, they have it all. Their beer selection is constantly rotating and at any given time they offer a wide range of styles, brewers, etc. I definitely would not sleep on the food either. My personal favorite it the Cuban Frita Burgers. Make sure to add the quail eggs. I also highly recommend the wings. Can't really go wrong, though. As a regular here, I can assure you Quaff On! is worth nothing short of 5 stars. Others may disagree, but they would be stupid and wrong. read more

It seems like the guest taps are great, and it is definitely a coup to get Zombie Dust on tap (indicated as "coming soon" when I visited), but the house beers were nearly undrinkable! This was shocking in Bloomington, where food and drink are usually of a very high quality. I assume QO is banking on undiscerning collegiate palates. I can't recall any other time that I did not finish a beer I ordered, but my husband and I were unable to finish 3 of the 8 beers on the beer flight of house brews. The double IPA was disgustingly hoppy, the bourbon barrel ale tasted like whiskey was poured in it (not as though it was aged in a bourbon barrel, i.e., a shortcut seems to have been taken), and, as for the coffee/hazelnut stout, I am 99% sure that hazelnut coffee was poured into the finished beer (another shortcut). The others were barely better, ranging from too slimy malty to too hoppy with nothing in between (except for possibly the Hoosier Red), but we choked those down because the flight cost over $20! On the plus side, the service was fine, the ambiance was nice (in the afternoon - I dread thinking of the lines for a single-serve bathroom at night in a beer joint), and the guest taps were great. I would advise coming here during the day and sticking to the Three Floyds taps and similar. Also, for those wondering about the décor, I think they are going for North Woods, Wisconsin. read more

We also ordered the tuna and got 3 very small pieces for $16 dollars. I would go for the beer, but eat beforehand. This was my first visit to Quaff On! My co-worker and I had been traveling through Southern Indiana and when we were driving through Bloomington we decided to stop for a late lunch. Started with a Hare Trigger IPA. Brewed in house. Good stuff. Not over or under when it comes to the hops. Next a cup of chili with cheese and onions. I thought it was bean less but was informed it had black beans. Good as a starter. Next the wings with Bomber BBQ. Wings were meaty and not undercooked. I normally order extra crispy. No need this time. The BBQ sauce had a smoky taste with a spiciness at the back of the throat. Get the sauce on the side. Next beer selection is the Fools Russian. A Russian Imperial Stout. I heard our new President likes Russian beer. This one comes in a small glass so people with small hands are able to hold it. After eating the wings I suggest sticking to IPA's or Lagers. The buds take a hit with the BBQ sauce. Good job all around. One star deducted because the WiFi sucks. read more

Fantastic restaurant! loved the atmosphere and service but we especially loved the food. We started out with the buffalo smoked wings for an appetizer and they were an easy 10/10. Then for my meal I decided to stick with another appetizer and got the full order of the Pork Nachos and they were fantastic, very large serving as well.
