Big Y is not the store we frequent the most but this was the only store open after the storm and of course we "needed" a few things to make dinner. The parking lot was decently cleared and the store was fairly empty but the employees were very happily there at work and I am not joking. Rick in particular heard us looking over some granola - a necessity when you're snowed in haha- and he noticed that we were reading ingredients to find the healthiest choice and he went out of his way to bring us two kinds from two other isles that were on totally point with our ingredient wish list! Like WOW such hospitality and service and he had such a big, friendly smile the entire time he was assisting us. Then, at checkout, Rob, who is possibly the manager, was also very friendly and helpful and went out of his way to ensure that we found everything we needed. They were fully stocked and it is a nice, large grocery store with everything you could possibly need. I had ordered a 30" sub with John in the pizza/sandwich section about 45 minutes ago. I arrive within 40 minutes as he had told me. Now, I'm standing at the counter-right in front of John- and he did not service me at all. Frankly, I was waiting starring at him for a good 6m. He saw me, decided to not help me. So, this very kind hard working gentleman Mathew came to the counter to assist me. Mathew had asked John where my 30" sub was and he said he put it on the table. One of the better big Y is the area. They have a good pizza section and bakery. They also always have an orange juice container in the front and offer free juice. They have really good coffee here, almost 5 different types and good donuts. The store is clean and tons of staff around to assist. They also have a large seating area in the bakery section to sit and enjoy your food while shopping. read more

Oh man! This place has thought of everything. They have street lights above the check out lines in case it's dark outside. They also have concaved mirrors, so the cashier can check out what's "under your cart" if you catch my drift. Also there is a guy working in the deli who wears a beret. My husband and I just came back from the BIG Y in Bethel. We were very disappointed to find a customer not wearing a mask and when we reported the fact to the front desk, they shrugged and reported that they couldn't do anything about it. The state of Connecticut states that masks must be worn and if you have an underlying medical issue, you must have a Doctor's statement with you or face being fined. They said they weren't allowed to question anyone. We were not the only customers concerned with the attitude of the employees. I will not be back and I will share my experience with others. read more

I love this store. I love the people there. I love the deals. I love everything EXCEPT for the fact that they're inconsistent with their fresh grapefruit juice production. Some days it's there, some days it's not. Very frustrating when FRESH grapefruit juice is part of my daily routine. I called to inquire about when this store may receive another shipment of Toilet paper, I asked if the stock was replenished throughout the day, I was told it is all put out by the overnight stock crew, for the morning customers, I said what about your loyal customers that are actually working during this virus outbreak and couldn't possibly make it to the store by 3-4 Pm, What about splitting the supply for some of us later in the afternoon, it was basically an Oh Well, from the person working the Customer relations counter. That's loyalty for you. I told him that some of their competitors are spitting their stock for that exact reason. Did not phase them, they just do not care. I live nearby but avoid shopping here. The produce is often old, out of stock and way overpriced. I don't mind paying a bit extra for good quality, fresh food but here you pay more and get nearly rotten vegetables and herbs. I can't believe how long they have actually gotten away with it. Your pizza shop never picks up the phone. I have to call the service desk to walk over there to get them to pick up. Then it's a 45 minute wait for the pizza. Lets figure this out-On Friday nights you need more employees working there. I think they figure if they don't pick up the phone they can just hang out and not work. I love Big Y. First, they are American Owned and that means a lot. Second, they have a huge variety of fresh produce, cheeses, meats, etc. Their bakery is good (and we love the Ponzcki in february!) My wife & I who are both in our 30's were shopping and happened to be purchasing a case of beer. (Among another $150 worth of groceries) Without any greeting a manager which we believe was Kim came into our isle and demanded both my wife and I show ID for the beer. My wife did not have her purse. I explained to this woman that I was buying the beer and that I had valid ID. She had it in her head I guess that my wife was underage, which is disturbing (Again we are both in our 30's). Apparently there is some secret store policy that everyone with you also needs to show ID, even though there not buying anything. Below is an image of a sign at each register. "All purchases of alcoholic beverages will require positive ID" OK. I did that. No where does it mention anyone with you needs to also show ID. Also its not practical. (If I'm a father with my 15 yr old daughter your going to demand she show ID or refuse the sale? I don't think so) Regardless of policy, which should be properly listed if you want to enforce it, a manager should be kind & respectful to customers which she was not. When I told her I guess we can't buy it then she just grabbed it and walked away. Wasn't nice about it at all. She made such a scene other isles were watching us. Even the cashier and bagger made comments about it after she left as they too were in shock. We left the store angry and embarrassed. And why is that? What did we do wrong? Also upon reaching out to Big Y I have yet to receive a response to why this happened and why this woman was so rude to us. Why doesn't the store post the actual policy? The lesson learned is unless you are buy beer by yourself and you have valid ID you shouldn't purchase it from Big Y. read more

Big Y Store, Stony Hill Road, Bethel, CT ... This store is horrible. On Saturday, I went in to purchase a gift card from display case. After waiting 20 minutes on the Express check out line (only four check out lanes were staffed by the way!) ... I entered my loyalty phone number but was asked by the cashier if I had a loyalty card in MY name. I replied we have one for our household...she told me in order to purchase a gift card (for children's place) I would need a loyalty card in MY name. Her supervisor came over after several minutes to repeat....I then said fine but was then asked for my Drivers License. How ridiculous can it get? They don't insure gift card so I cannot understand why my Drivers' License is necessary NOR did I want to see how long that process would have taken the half asleep staff to do. Anyway, I am a frequent shopper NO LONGER! Good riddance. read more

Just wanted to let you know that pre-made Thanksgiving meal was awful; the turkey was dry, the country stuffing was gray and very unappetizing, tasted like salty mush, the butternut squash tasted like dirt. I am surprised at the negative reviews but perhaps they're from folks who prefer the big box, factories like the stop&shop across the street. I have been shopping at Big Y for about 15 years. They have great specials--especially buy-one-get-one type sales. They have a great produce department, stocked with in-season local produce when available. They make the best fried chicken anywhere. The deli department has lots of good choices, often on sale. With their silver rewards program, you can always get good discounts in every category. Big Y has a local feel and they really are a great chain. It isn't trying to be anything more than a great grocery store. That's what I want. read more

Shopped at this location today and the store is filled with grain moths...Grain moths do not come out during the day unless they are infested. The lady in front of me slapped a large one that landed on her leg and handed it to the cashier..a young man.
