Great five star meals! Had the pan seared salmon and mango chutney so delicious! My had the chicken breast with a fig balsamic sauce and roasted vegetables so delicious and shared a delicious crème brûlée for dessert. Felt underdressed as we stopped after running our shopping. This review is for Tony Dragonowski (Bijou's owner) and his catering. My husband and I reached out to Tony to cater our wedding more than 6 months prior to our scheduled wedding date at the end of July. We found working with Tony to be incredibly frustrating and unacceptable when communicating in the months leading up to our wedding. Weeks would go by without any communication or follow up from Tony regarding the menu, logistics, etc. My husband and I had many conversations in which we debated cancelling for fear of how the service would actually be, given the complete lack of communication on Tony's part. The only reason we did not cancel is because he came recommended by people in the area and they assured us that things would be okay come the day of the wedding. Well, during the day of the wedding after he delivered our food, we heated each of the dishes with the chafer heating elements (per Tony's instruction) for over an hour and when we went to eat them, all the dishes were cold. We spent the next hour rotating each dish into the ovens in my husband's parents' home while everybody waited. It was a disaster. What made all of this even more frustrating is that this was the most expensive part of our wedding and we both felt like we just lit all that money on fire given how it turned out. It goes without saying that most of the food was wasted because it was cold and not good. I should also note that before writing this review we emailed Tony privately to see what he had to say. Rather than take responsibility for the poor communication and poor service the day of the wedding, he proceeded to make excuses and claimed that he had given instructions to people in our wedding party to heat the food in the oven prior to serving it. We were suspicious of this claim and so we spoke to everyone that Tony had interacted with and NONE of them said they were told to put the food in the oven prior to serving. We found this extremely hurtful that he would proceed to lie to us after everything that had happened. It was like adding insult to injury, hence why we are writing this review. We have never left a negative review -- especially for a small business -- but given the complete failure of service and execution we feel compelled to warn others of our experience lest they have something similar happen to them. read more

We have had a few people tell us about this place so we decided to give it a try. I have been told that it is a location for premium dining, and could never figure out why it was in the location that it was. We called ahead and got a table immediately. We ordered the stuffed mushroom appetizer which was basically button mushrooms breadcrumbs toasted with butters and some melted rubbery provolone on top. Edible, but tasted more like something you made at home in your toaster oven. My wife ordered the Thai peanut Pasta and I had the chicken marsala. I also ordered the six dollar upgrade Caesar salad and when it arrived was surprised to see that it was quite small. Upon tasting it, I was expecting a housemaid Caesar or something but it had very much the taste of salad dressing bought in 1 gallon containers. I reserved my judgment and waited for the chicken marsala. The wait times were very long and we waited for about 15-20 minutes between service. When it arrived, the asparagus topping it was about half the size in diameter of a pencil. The fingerling potatoes were so hard we could almost not cut them and the chicken was so rubbery there was no hope of cutting it with a fork. My wife's Thai peanut pasta tasted like the sauce came out of a grocery store bottle. While I really wanted to like this place, as Eau Claire badly needs upscale dining, I am quite definite we will not be back. I realize this is a bit of a harsh review, but when I spend $70 on a meal I expect it to be pretty good. I know of numerous other restaurants that I could walk out of for $30 and have a much better dining experience. Hopefully, the staff and management read these reviews and will up their game. Maybe they were short staffed or something. I really do want them to succeed. read more

Enjoyed a date night dinner last night from our favorite - Bijou Bistro. Tony is such a phenomenal chef, and because this is during the Covid Quarantine, we got the special Smiling Curbside Delivery from both Kristen and Mike. While we miss the intimate dining room and table service, the food still rocks! (This is a small restaurant, where you are treated as friends.) While I often crave the lamb my wife prefers to vary. Tonight it was Chicken Piccata, Penne with Italian Sausage, Bijou's signature salads (always choose that upgrade), and of course the Chocolate Flourless Torte. One more word - we fondly recall one of our most memorable evenings - at the Chef's table with friends - a rare opportunity to witness the creation of the dishes and interact with the chef. The rating is only because this restaurant is positioned as a 'fine dining' experience. Ignore the strip mall location. Once inside the room, it's a pleasant place, with white tablecloths and glasses and some art that takes you away from the location. Our friendly waiter explained that this is a fine dining experience cooked by a self-taught chef whose family own a local Italian restaurant. I was handed a wine list and the first thing I noticed was a lack of any champagne. Given the options in Eau Claire, this is clearly a 'celebration or occasion' restaurant, and the lack of any sparkling wine was surprising. The wine list was short, but averaged $30 and the most expensive wine was $44. Not a great list but workable, and that set the theme for the evening. The crab cake appetizer was huge, three cakes. The presentation was 1985 and the tropical fruit on top was unnecessary; a squeeze of lemon would have brought out the crab. An interim course of Caesar salad would have benefited from fresh Parmesan. It was dry, though the dressing was fine: again a huge portion. The chicken Marsala was a home cooking dish. The chicken breast was dwarfed by giant fingerling potatoes which made the breast look tiny. The chocolate brut was cold on one side. $180 including service for two: 1 bottle of wine, 2 overpriced gin and tonics ($8 each). A trip to the bathroom takes you into the kitchen space where the chef and his sous are busy. It's nice to see 'behind the curtain.' Bijou wouldn't last five minutes as a fine dining restaurant in New York or Chicago. It's a home cooked experience, not a bistro in the true French sense, but it is perfectly acceptable. With training, both the cook and the staff could elevate this pleasant space into something better. But there is no need: happy diners in casual clothes, sweatshirts even, were having a great evening, and given the options locally I'm sure it will thrive. read more

My very first time was for a 5 course meal, honestly everything on the menu is to die for. I will continue to support this local Resturant!!!! Nice, quaint restaurant that has delicious food and great service. From what I counted, it has tables enough to seat about 20 patrons in its narrow interior, but spaced enough to where it doesn't seem forced or crowded. Taste: We ordered the dumplings and bacon wrapped appetizers. Both were incredible. The bacon wrapped appetizer were bacon wrapped shrimp, chicken and Water chestnuts. Everything was delicious. Note to chef: you might have noticed I had some pieces of bacon on my bread plate after we left. This wasn't because it was undercook or not delicious, it had mostly fat on those small pieces. DINNER ENTREE: I had the steak and my wife had the salmon. Portions were very generous and everything tasted incredible. My wife loved her salmon entree. The cost was as expected. It's high end quality so you have to expect elevated prices (if compared to a regular restaurant) but not extravagant pricing. It's appropriately priced for the quality and portions. The menu online may not be the most current available menu as it lists January at the top. I was amped to order the espresso rubbed NY strip but that wasn't the option on the menu we were handed. I still had a steak option and that's what I got! You get a salad with the entree and again don't expect the size to be akin to a regular restaurant. The size was perfect as a prelude to our entree. The average person may turn their nose up on the size but with appetizers and the fact that we were there for dinner and not for just a salad, it was the perfect size salad! The rolls came out warm and fresh! They were delicious and the size was enough to tempt your palate for what was to come but not too big to ruin your appetite. I feel that too many drive by this restaurant without seeing them as they should. It's a small, quaint bistro that has great service, good atmosphere (music was a little too loud but that's a personal thing for me) and appropriate pricing. We didn't leave hungry that's for sure. If you're looking for a great place to enjoy a romantic dinner, of high quality cooking and great service, I would definitely recommend this Bistro. In the Midwest, it's hard to get across how great high end meals are when most won't leave or go on vacation where they would be exposed to its benefits, which makes this bistro a hidden gem. You want to impress your date? You want to take a loved one to a location that shows you out in the time to research a place that shows them how you feel? Enjoyed a spectacular meal! Small quiet restaurant that fits about 22 people. The waiter addresses you by your name and is making sure you have everything you need to enjoy your meal. We started out with a glass of wine and the cutting board appetizer. This was a display of unique cheeses, fruit, bread, meat and sauces. The side salad was plated with many different types of greens. Had sliced radishes, cherry tomatoes and few dried bread croutons along with dressing. Very refreshing and tasty. My boyfriends meal was the lamb chops and I had the tenderloin. My tenderloin was cooked as asked. It was plated with so much food. It had mashed potatoes with skin, tenderloin, topped with asparagus and green beans and a few other greens. The tenderloin was mouth watering! We observed my 67th birthday by dining at Bijou Bistro, an experience that really added to the day. When first entering, one is impressed with the atmosphere of this small, intimate restaurant. Next, the waitstaff is topnotch, being both professional and friendly. Our server told us right away that because of the way everything was individually prepared that things might take a little longer, a fact that doesn't matter when considering the quality of the food and the experience. My wife and I each had the Bistro's signature salad and were totally pleased. Then came the entrees. My wife had the chicken marsala, and I had the pork chop. Both were pleasant to look at and even more pleasant to eat. Finally, we concluded our dining experience by sharing a creme brulee, a dish that was light and tasty. Meh. Considering the cost, very meh. All of the trappings, none if the substance. Food was certainly not the haute cuisine it pretends to be. Nothing was exceptional. Mushrooms stuffed with what might have been stove top stuffing, and slathered in cheddar cheese. The same thing is probably available across the street at the sports bar. Caesar and house salads were not imaginatively made, dressing was store bought. chicken saltimbocca and veal Marsala both tough, with heavy flavorless sauces. Lots of things were unavailable. Service was certainly not 'fine dining' either. No knowledge of meager wine list. Bottle cap wine was ceremoniously poured to check the cork. Mains were brought out mid salad and left to sit on the serving tray. This place should probably pare it's expectation back to 'cozy sandwich shoppe' and cut prices at least in half.
