THIS PLACE IS THE BEST. Services are limited right now due to covid, but when they're open you can still buy bike parts, used bikes, and accessories. The people there are always so friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. When there isn't covid, they are open for you to DIY repair and answer questions and lend you tools so you can learn how to work on your bike yourself. Though they can't do your repairs right now, if you have questions, they take time to tell you how to fix things yourself safely, wearing masks and outside. Hey guys ever tried commuting 10 or more miles on a mountain bike? Yeah that's dumb...well I did it and it sucked! So I went to a few local bike shops, and their advice was to buy a completely new bike....ummm escrew that holmes! Here comes bikerowave to the rescue. All it took was one volunteer to tell me that all I needed to do, was trade the knobby tires on my mountain bike for slicks and my daily commute was no longer an odyssey! The staff were extremely knowledgeable and friendly and at times very enthusiastic. This is a place where you can feel comfortable being a bike noob, like there is no judgment maaaaaan. Please be aware that this is not a bike repair shop where you dump your ride and come back another day. No sir, you had better roll up your sleeves and get ready to do some manual labor! The volunteers are there to guide you and show you way, and occasionally will help you out when the going gets tough. For 92 Mexican pesos and hour (or 7 bucks) you are allowed to use the tools and setups to repair your bike, as well as access to a large assortment of parts and components for your bike (parts sold separately...batteries not included) . Not bad huh? So ditch the whip for a while, find a used bike off of Craigslist and get down and dirty at Bikerowave...I kid you not you WILL get hooked. read more

I'm all thumbs when it comes to this kind of thing, so I figured I'd just get a little air in the tires of my new used bike and hope for the best. Within 20 minutes, the volunteer staff at Bikerowave showed me how to reposition my tire tubes, lube my chain, and tune up my brakes. It rides like a dream and they charged me next to nothing. Awesome. Go here. My bike is old, hasn't ever been tuned up. It really needed some love so I showed up a few weeks ago at this place to see what is all about. Steve said bring the bike in and let's see what we can do. Today I lumbered up my street with my defunct bike and prepared myself for the embarrassing task of trying to fix it in front of well oiled bike hounds. Fear not, m'lady. These guys are so awesome and do not judge. There is not one ounce of pretentiousness in this place. It took 3 hours to replace basically all the cabling/housings on my bike, open up the gears and spray the heck out of em, clean it up, remove some stupid stuff on it from the previous owner, and voila! My bike is better than when I first got it! And I did a lot of this stuff myself with the great volunteers showing me the way. So I really feel like this bike is mine, for the first time. My mother's friend offered to give me a working bike. Upon arriving to pick it up, I was very disappointed that I was not told ahead of time that it was actually not in working condition. In fact it was pretty beat up and somewhat rusted. I went to a reputable bike shop I found on yelp and they said it would take $150-160 to replace everything. I then went to Walmart (don't judge me) to realize that a brand new, fairly top of the line bike was ranging from $90-160. I wanted to save this bike, but not for $160. I asked around and a friend's boyfriend recommended I take it to these volunteer, co-op, donation-based bike places around LA where they will show you how to fix the bike. I arrived an hour after their opening time and it was extremely full, so much that the manager, Jason, was recommending coming back another day. Luckily, as i was disappointed and leaving, Jason found a place for me. I was introduced to a volunteer named Gustavo and he showed me how to clean the bike, oil the gears, look for problems, adjust brakes--a multitude of explanations. I also felt i was immersed the the world of bike culture, understanding the history of my bike and how it was one of those classics bike collectors salivate over. There were many things i could to fix, but after two hours it was in working condition, and barring the $18 to replace the broken seat bar (attaches seat to bike), I paid less for for Gustavo's patient and knowledgeable help ($7/hour). I left with a wealth of new bike skillz, a handful of steel wool (to remove the rust off my spokes), and a charge of $33.58 on my Visa card. WHAT A BARGAIN. Everyone there was super friendly and some of the people that were working on their bikes gave me recommendations on how to improve, fix, and adjust my bike. These guys--and girls--know their bikes, and can spot problems very quickly. I am glad to have met them, especially Peter, an avid bicyclist and a teacher on the Navajo Reservation. As i left, the manager joked he wished i won't come back for any more issues, but i will definitely be back to work on my bike and tell all my friends this place. This place is the epitome of hipster NONSENSE. It's a good concept gone horribly wrong. Like socialism, it sounds good, but once put into practice, things go south pretty horribly. I called in, needing help to replace a bike tube. I don't know how to replace a bike tube. Yes, I could probably watch a Youtube video, but I want to support a local business. The guy on the phone was nice. He said to come in, and someone would help me. Great! Sounds good. Minutes later, I walk in. Lot of activity. Guys busy working on bikes. Looks promising. I walk up to the front desk. Three guys, who I assume are employees, are there, having a conversation about artisanal bowling pins, or whatever the hell hipsters talk about. I stand there, waiting.... and waiting.... and waiting... I'm standing right in front of them, looking at them, waiting for some acknowledgement. I'm not a rude guy, and I don't like interrupting conversations, but I was compelled to. I managed to get the attention of one of these Silver Lake rejects. "Oh.. um... just grab that pump there and that tire lever there and come over and I'll help you." He seemed irritated that I interrupted his conversation to ask help for something so beneath him, like replacing a bicycle tube. By the way, this was the first interaction I had with an employee here, and it was five minutes after I walked in. So I go and get those items, and come back. "So.. um.. ya just lift here and unattach the wheel here and then replace it with the other tube.." And then he goes right back to his conversation. And he WALKS AWAY! What the fuck?!! It seems like the employees' job here entails having conversations with the other employees. They had no interest in helping. I looked around, and noticed everyone was engaged in what appeared to be deep conversation, with some bicycle repair going on. But mostly just talking. I concluded that this place is a bar masquerading as a bicycle repair shop. I left in disgust, but not before taking a new tube with me, so the trip turned out not be entirely in vain. read more

A++ I've been to a few bike shops on the westside, from Manny's to Bike Attack, and none have given me the level of knowledge, service, and level of attention as have Bikerowave. These folks are amazing. I went in there just to adjust my handlebars, but left with an array of other repairs that went unnoticed by the other bikes shops. These volunteers are very helpful, and freely share their knowledge. If one person doesn't have the answer, another one will help you. Met these guys at their booth at the Santa Monica Festival, after taking the Metro with my bike. Even though I've had several co-ops and bike shops look at my bike, no one's been able to trouble-shoot it like the guys at Bikerowave. I inquired about a sound I heard, and the volunteer logically and patiently deduced the issue: my derailleur was set too low and rubbing against the bike chain. It turns out that whomever had changed out my derailleur had given my bike a size too small and awkward, and just tried to make it work. After going step-by-step, and hitting some unexpected snags, my Bikerowave volunteer nevertheless secured my bike's derailleur, pumped up my tires, and I set off, feeling super satisfied by his helpfulness. Left them a tip which they thanked me for my generosity. My feeling? "No dudes, THANK YOU!" You just gave me a 100% boost in confidence and reassurance that I'm riding my bike safely! read more

This place rocks! I came in here after my bike got ripped off by some jerk. I had to get new brakes and came in here to hope to get a better fit it deal than going to a bike shop, and I did! This was a great experience. The volunteers here are very very helpful and friendly. These guys enjoy people and bikes and it shows. While for the most part its up to you to do the work, there are people wandering around or working on their own bikes that are willing to help you figure out whatever you don't know. I came in here a couple of times for various tuning on my bike and always had a great experience. I learned a lot about my bike and my fit it ability! They sell parts and also sell donation parts for dirt cheap. Just be prepared to dig in a pile of stuff to find what you need. They have great bike racks to help you easily fix your bike and have all the tools you'll need. read more

After being a 'cyclist' my entire life, it's about time I learn how to fix a bike. I got a flat the other day and this freelance life has me strapped for ca$h. When I arrived they were pretty busy and I had to wait about 15 minutes. I missed the sign in sheet, not that it seems to be followed too closely. As it was a Saturday I expected it to be pretty packed anyway. Conner assisted me, and he totally rocks. $4 for a half hour and $1 tip. They guided me through the use of the truing stand, and one and a half hours later ($7), I rode out happy. Hello, I finally took the plunge and bought a nice road bike and got it in the mail and of course it needed assembly. So I got on yelp and contacted all the bike shops close to me and of course their prices ranged between $50 and $75 but that was not the problem all of them needed to keep my bike for few days to put together which I was not happy about since I wanted to take it for spin already :) My good friend recommended that I come here and get my hands dirty and learn since he has built two bikes already here and he vouched for them so I waited till opening time and came over with my bike .... The guys greeted me at the door and explained the process for me and I have to admit it was a lot of fun and a steep learning curve but not overwhelming. I did love every minute of it the best part of it is that every one of the staff was stopping by and checking on me and the progress and they all did that with a big smile from what it seemed to me they did really love what they did and they loved teaching folks like me the right things and why we do this and that etc so it all made sense I just wanted to say thank you all for being so helpful and we are truly blessed to have your shop in our community and from now on all of my biking needs I will be heading over there most definitely. Also thanks to Shane, Rachel and Gabe you guys were awesome and your help was much appreciated. Oh the best part is that I spent few hours and learned tons and had a great time doing that and the cost was more than 50% less than the cheapest bike shop and that was including the tip too :) (for anyone on a budget would like to know this part) read more

This place is awesome, it is staffed by volunteers and they lend you their tools to fix and/or in my case assemble your brand new bike. I forget exactly how much it was per hour, I think $8 to borrow tools for an hour and you get to ask the volunteers questions as you are assembling/fixing your bike. They also sell parts at affordable prices, and have sometimes second hand/used parts for sale too. If you are a Do-It-yourself kinda person you'll be in heaven. read more

I had an absolutely superb experience here and would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs to service their bike! The volunteers were very knowledgeable, patient and friendly. I recently purchased my first road bike online having never ridden a road bike before. After giving up on trying to assemble my bike myself I decided to take it into a shop for assembly assistance and to get a few general questions answered. I am very glad I came here. I was greeted and assisted by one of the volunteers immediately upon entering. I let them know that this was my first road bike and that my knowledge was very limited. The volunteer that assisted me was very friendly and happy to help teach me about my bike, how to service it properly and even gave me riding tips. He walked me through step by step maintenance and made sure I was hands on with servicing my bike so I would learn. I am very grateful for his patients and willingness to actually teach me the ropes! Overall, from assembly to first ride everything took a little over an hour. Probably one of my best customer services experiences and I would highly recommend them to first time riders! read more

I lived in Venice for a year and was so lucky to be close to Bikerowave! I spent a total of $11, yes that is $11 and not $110, for using the facilities and receiving a ton of guidance on my little project. I changed my rear derailleur and cassette. I changed my flat bar to a drop bar. I put on STI shifters and cables. I did it all! The volunteers help guide me here and there and I could not have done it without their help. I love how my bike turned out! It was my first bike purchase and I'm so glad I modified it to the way I liked vs. just buying a new bike. I don't live close to a coop anymore so I have to do things myself with what few tools I have. You people close to Bikerowave are lucky! read more

A nice spot. A lot of volunteers, scrap parts, and tools to pick through to help get you through your repair needs. The volunteer skill levels vary, so your experience may vary. Looks like a lot of the volunteers bring in their own bikes to work on while hanging out, so they get you started with some directions and let you do the rest. If you're a little bit wary about working with your hands, you may be in over your head. People do offer to help even if you don't ask, but don't expect them to do the work for you. The only reason 4 stars? The part I was looking for wasn't in stock. We tried to rig it with some comparable ones, but no luck. Unfortunately, 2 hours later my wheel is still wobbling and I'll have to buy the part elsewhere... I'll probably be back, and hopefully be able to do the repair faster next time. I went into Bikerowave optimistic, with a $12 problem and a broken bike, and left 2.5 hours later, $30 poorer, frustrated, and my bike still broken (just in a different, much more complicated way). Yup, I went in with a flat tire. All we had to do was take the old tube out, put a new one in ($5) and I would have been on my merry way for a total of $12 (tube+one hour's stand rental). In hindsight, I should've just gone to a regular repair shop and had this done in 10 minutes for $15 by a professional. I'm a newbie -- I don't know anything about bikes -- and my lack of knowledge literally cost me more than paying someone to just fix the dang thing. Instead, after getting the tire done, the first of 3 helpers I worked with also recommended that I replace my brake wires and pads. I should've said "No thank you," and left with my workable bike, but instead I thought, "Ahhh what the heck -- how complicated can it be?" FAIL! I take full responsibility for not being mechanically inclined, but...as soon as the stuff started getting difficult and irreversible -- poof-- I was left alone, no helper to explain what I was supposed to be doing. Finally Sarah came by and helped me through a lot (and all the helpers were really nice and super knowledgeable when they were around, but they were busy), but closing time rapidly approached, so it was a rush job up till the end. Finally I paid my $30 bill and left, immediately noticing that the bike's back brake pad was pressed too tight against the wheel to ride it. I guess my consolation is that now, with the right tools (which I don't have), I can probably adjust the bike on my own, but... ...Honestly, I should have never gone there. We all have different skills -- I speak 4 languages for example -- and yet I suck at bike repair. I admit it. If you're like me and aren't good at repairing stuff, just do yourself a huge favor and pay a little more to have a professional fix your bike problem for you. I ended up just wasting my time, buying stuff I probably didn't need for the kind of riding I do, and just messing up my bike...very very sad. read more

This was the best experience of my life. I bought a bike off of Amazon, cheap, with assembly required. I put most of it together but my front gear shifter wasn't working. I thought I was going to need a new one, but the guys at Bikerowave helped me and I was out of there in an hour, spending only on a derailleur cable. Another guy who wasn't even a volunteer helped me by showing me how my brakes worked and tweaking those. My total was $8 and change, but I donated on top of that because it was so amazing to be taught how everything works and then fix it myself. I was so happy and rode away. I was shifting again and the cable disengaged. I guess I didn't tighten it enough. I didn't go back, I just went home and fixed it myself. I mean, that's the point of this place, right? I will be going back for more tuning I'm sure, but today was the best thing I could have ever done for myself and the start of my cycling journey. I don't have a bike but had been here twice now with hubby. He had a flat tires both time and came here to fix it with help from volunteers. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, this is not a place for you. The expectation? You fix your own bike and the volunteers can show you how. That's why it's cheap and that's why it's so popular. Why fix it for you when they rather teach you how to do it yourself? I dig it, there are couches for spouse member to sit and wait, with 90 min work and replaced a new tube cost hubby $16 bucks, not a bad deal at all. The thing is they only open in the evening for 4 hours, it's a community jam and don't spread the word, we like to keep it to ourselves read more

I have visited here twice with my vintage full-sized folding bike. I was very impressed with the service both times. I had never been to a bicycle kitchen - where you do your own bicycle repairs - before. The volunteers gave me lots of support when I wanted it and left me alone to work when I wanted it. Nice combination. On my first visit, I learned how to true my wheel. On my second visit I installed a front brake. The volunteers told me what type of brake to buy and it was perfect for the bike (it was an odd size). I am now an empowered bike owner! I worked on my bike and I can still ride it! read more

Me: total bike novice. Task: attach rear bike rack. Bikerowave: easy place to stop by, get help assembling the rack, and to ask questions about the basics on upkeep on a bike. Could I have had someone else put the rack on? Sure. But this was excellent middle ground between having someone else work on your bike and doing it yourself. If you need a tune-up or a fix on your bike and plan to take it to a bike shop, don't. Bikerowave is so much better. You'll learn a few new skills, meet some nice people, and fix your bike for so much cheaper. I love bikes and biking, but my lack of knowledge is kind of sad. I'm a complete barn when it comes to bikes. Bought my first bike since age 9 (always skated) couple months ago. My new hobby of mountain biking has been awesome for days when there's no surf, but I'm completely clueless when it comes to bikes. I didn't even know how to put the wheel back on....until yesterday. Like fixing surfboards, it's better to learn to DIY as much as possible. So I figured I might as well start learning now. The only drawback with this place is that it's crowded, so you'll be waiting for help (can't really call it a drawback though because hey it's practically free + you're saving big time $ on labor + the info you get is worth it....so you should just STFU patiently and wait). When I did get help, the people were amazing. I'm almost amazed this is a co-op. The BIKEROWAVE guys were 100x more helpful than the bikesnob...bike shop where I bought my bike. Also the other more experienced bikers in there were willing to help as well. [BTW, WTF is with traditional bikeshops and these bike-Aholes that work there? Is this some requirement to work at a bike shop? Not just one shop either. Hey traditional bike shops. Your employees' A-holishness forced me to find other options. You got my $ for the bike but I'll be doing my repairs at BIKEROWAVE, thanks for nothing, D**KS] Be prepared to wait around and wait your turn, but an amazing concept that I highly recommend. BikeRoWave is one of the most convenient and useful shops I've ever been to. It's run by volunteers so you know they are dedicated and passionate about bicycles and they are very, VERY helpful. I just recently purchased a bicycle from Helen's Cycles in Santa Monica and I wanted to switch out the components (entire drive train). I don't know why but I caught the "upgrade bug" and asked them how much it would cost. let me say, I could have bought another bike. So I figure, hmmm. If I can learn how to take the parts off and sell them, I could use that money and buy even better parts than would have come by buying the higher end model. In addition, in the process of taking apart the bike to sell the parts, I would learn the inner mechanics of my bicycle and would be more proficient in servicing my bike myself. TADA! Come BikeRoWave, I came here on a Sunday and was met by Kwan and Ray who both helped teach me how to take apart my bike, informed me of the different tools I should use. They are careful to let you do it yourself but they will guide you if you need it. Excellent shop, excellent workers! I love it! The best part is you get to do the work yourself with their tools all so you don't end up paying some snobby fixie kid or over-the-hill member of the lycra mob an arm and a leg . I recently acquired a bike from my neighbor (thanks, Anthony) who said that he never uses it. The front tire was flat so I brought it over to Bikerowave. It was a weekday afternoon and, therefore, closed. I was disappointed. Paul just happened to be there and let me come in and helped me fix it. Shout out to Paul! Then today I was out riding and the tire blew. I brought it in and Max helped me. Shout out to Max! He helped me replace both tires, put on new ones that ride smoother and faster, helped me adjust the gears and now I've got a bike that works much better. Great group of people. THANK YOU. They offered the cheapest and most effective solution to the problem and fixed it right away, even though I came in 10 minutes before closing! My favorite volunteer run CO OP in LA, and I've tried them all. Awesome location on Venice Blvd, easy swoop while riding West. Always pop in to say hi even if i don't have to fix or buy anything, just cause the regulars and the volunteers are so friendly and active in the biking community.
