I stopped by probably 45 miles into the ride cause I was out of water. I had a burger. It was good. I didn't have any issues anyone talking politics to me or anything like that, but we all have different experiences in life. I didn't see any Virginia battle flags or anything either. I had seen those when I was there prior to Covid but I didn't experience anything like some folks are talking about so I don't know if they're trying to change that atmosphere or not but you know the food was good it was Warm and brown and plenty of it. read more

This is the most down home place I think I've ever been to. How many places can you find a fried bologna sandwich? Way better then the ones I make. The bologna was 1/2 inch thick!! The girl behind the bar was Jacks daughter. Jack is Bills son, who took over after Bill died. The family has lived in the area for a very long time. They know everything about the area. Very welcoming family too. The inside is decorated with all kinds of cool stuff and dollar bills on the ceiling. I never remember to take pictures till It's too late . Trust me I'm working on that. DO NOT go here unless you're a racist and only have cash. We were driving home and was hungry. This places popped up as a gastronomic pub. I drove 15 minutes back to go to a place called Orleans. This sounds great. When you drive down the mountain, you feel like your on the edge of a hillside and you drive for like 15 mins. Finally arrive and it's a shit hole on the outside. I was afraid to walk in. We do and it's a part grocery store and the confederate flag is hanging all over the place. What a complete turnoff for us. We are not racist. Some of the previous reviews are worrisome, but during my time at bills I never heard anything offensive. I'm basing the review on my own experience. We actually talked politics, me saying I voted for Biden, them all trump folk, and it was cordial. Spent the whole day there because it was raining and I'd rather get drunk than ride my bike in the rain. I think previous reviewers might not understand that in small town bars in the US people talk shit. In England it's called taking the piss. I'm a fan of that culture. I'm from Chicago and we talk shit too. Obviously it can go to far, but if meant to be friendly, I frankly like it. Despite being a northern liberal, I'm more comfortable in this type of bar than in one where you need to watch what you say bc the PC patrol is on duty. While I do not support the confederate flag, and frankly don't understand how people fly it next to Old Glory (they tried to leave the union), I'm not going to judge someone solely for flying it. Life's too short to be so judgmental. Anyway, I enjoyed my time at Bills. Holly is a great server. I've been there twice now, and the third time I ride from Pittsburgh to DC I'll stop there again. read more

I rented a canoe from Bill place over the summer for an epic camping trip. The canoes are the same aluminum ones I used when I was in the scouts in the 70's and a bit pricey too. Time to upgrade Bill.. But the service was good and the canoe help up fine. Takes some warming up the help when you first arrive, but then its all good. One thumb up for Bill. read more

Stopped at Bill's Place for lunch during a bicycle ride down the C&O Canal. I love local small unique places like this. I asked the guy at the counter what on the menu was a local favorite. He laughed and said, "Everything on the menu is a local favorite. We're the only restaurant in town and for MILES around!" We had a couple of the fried fish sandwiches, some onion rings and sweet potato fries. They were all good. Nothing I'd go on a 31 mile bike ride specifically to go eat, but good enough that we enjoyed our lunch in the middle of our bike ride. Note to self: We should have paid when we ordered. As it turned out, we ordered, sat, they brought our food out to us, we ate... and then a biker gang of like 20 guys on motorcycles showed up. We had to get in line behind all the bikers to pay our tab before we could leave. All in all, we had a great bike ride and this was a nice place to stop along the way (even if it was the ONLY place to stop along the way). read more

My relay team stopped here while running through Maryland and in need of something...anything...to sustain us on a hot day when we realized we needed more food than we had brought. A lot of times we find that little places like Bill's offer mostly fried stuff or something prepared and reheated. What we got was carefully prepared, with not a lot of grease or fat (kind of important for runners) all served with the kind of hospitality that immediately made us feel welcome. I got a grilled chicken sandwich that was the perfect size between my parts of the race. Price was right, food was good, and when we run through here again next year I'm sure we'll be back. read more

I stopped at Bill's Place on a bike tour and was very disappointed. The lady tending bar acted like it was too much trouble to get off her stool to serve me. They had canned beer on sale for half the price of the bottles. Do you think she told me this? She was rude the entire time I was there. Typical bar food, which was ok. If you are riding the C&O Towpath (or hiking or whatever), an absolute MUST STOP and have a beer and/or food at Bill's place (currently run by son Jack). This is just the sort of funky, friendly, awesome place one would expect to find in an out-of-the-way but along-the-towpath place. We stopped for a beer on our way from the trail to our lodging. Later, being the only restaurant in town, we decided to walk on down and eat there. The menu is basic and on a white board - TOTALLY reasonable prices. The décor is fabulous - dollar bills plastered to the ceiling from hundreds of visitors over the years, a small "convenience store" in one corner, a big bar, a million interesting mementos on the walls, good conversation,. I have to say that my chili was just fine and my chicken sandwich one of the best I had on the trail. My friend ordered the fish sandwich (enough fish on that sandwich for TWO sandwiches). Nothing was greasy...just-right crispy! Add a couple of beers to that and dang - dinner for two for $20 is a real deal. Best Restaurant in town! read more

Disappointed given the way it is talked up on the most popular C and O online guide. Perhaps it has a long history with C and O, but I wouldn't consider it must-stop for me, nor would I stop here again. We experienced the previously mentioned racial cultural undertones with multiple confederate flags. Food and service was okay, but not anything special. The bar and restaurant is otherwise charming with dollar bills on the ceilings as a nice quirky touch. I get the impression bicyclists aren't really welcomed, but tolerated for their extra business. The stuff on the walls seems much more supportive of Harley motorcyclists than bicyclists. I would recommend eating a few miles down the road in Hancock, MD at Potomac River grill. In my experience, much better food, and a more welcoming environment for cyclists without any overt racial undertones. read more

I stopped in here after running into some locals biking on the trail. I'm glad we happened to run into them as there really isn't anywhere else to get anything to eat between Cumberland and Hancock on the C&O canal. Like the new place built after the fire. But folks today should have been around before the fire destroyed the old place. Back in the 80's we camped & turkey hunted near Bill's. We ALWAYS went in the afternoon for a beer which some times Bill would tell us to help ourselves as he was busy eating lunch. Then went back for dinner. The ceiling was completely covered with dollar bills. The old rustic bar had a big turkey mount behind it with all kinds of old guns and stuff. This is where East meets West; and North meets South; Bill was a retired printer who decided to open a place in a former C &O Canal warehouse building which had been moved back when the RR came through. It's an iconic place, but has the basics for food - sandwiches, drinks, etc. and in summer months, canoe rentals, too. If you are insulted by Confederate flags, it's not your place, but we feel it illustrates the history of this area while providing much needed food and a resting stop for bikers and hikers on the towpath. It's in the most remote stretch where Green Ridge State Forest follows the ridge line of the mountains and little to no development has taken place. 15 mile creek aqueduct and the need for a stopping point for Canal barges is why it's a place at all. But camping, hiking and understanding the Ches & Ohio Canal can be done while visiting Bill's Place and for those who like to learn about history while taking in the local culture will enjoy this stop. Funny Sunday beer laws mean you can't carry out, but you sure can have a few while seated at the bar. read more

The three things you need after a couple nights camping in the rain. If you're a biker and need attention because you decided to grace a place with your amazing presence, this probably isn't the place for you. But if you're hungry, looking to sit down, shut up, eat, and f--k off, this place is perfect. read more
