We were looking for a place that sold both sandwiches and burgers and we found this place! We went here on a Saturday around 5pm and there was no wait! This restaurant has both table seats and also booth seats and the staff let us choose where we wanted to sit (probably since the restaurant was empty at that time). Anyways, we ordered a Turkey sandwich with Fries, The Famous Bill's Hamburger w/ Potato Salad, and a Rocky Road Milkshake. Everything tasted good, but we do wish the portion size of the burger was a bit larger than the side item. We did like how juicy the burger was though and I loved how large the milkshake here is and how unique the flavor seemed! The turkey sandwich here didn't have anything special about it, but still tasted good enough. I'd recommend this place! We loved everything we got from the restaurant that day, but our favorite was the milkshake because of the size. I ordered Bill's patty melt with a rare-cooked patty, coleslaw on the side, and everything included--veggies and grilled onions. When it arrived, the patty itself was cooked exactly how I wanted it, nice and juicy with that perfect rare center. However, I noticed after taking a bite that the sandwich was missing the veggies I had expected. It only had the grilled onions, so it felt like something was lacking in terms of texture and balance. I didn't end up mentioning it to the staff since I wasn't very hungry to begin with, and I had already started eating. I actually didn't even finish the second half. After playing a round at Lincoln Park Golf Course, I was driving down Clement and decided it was a perfect time for a burger, fries, and a shake. I had been to Bill's a while ago when I used to work in the area, so it's definitely been 7+ years since I ate here last. I was solo dining, so I grabbed a seat at the counter. Servers and all the staff here were super nice and helpful. I went with the Paul Kantner Burger which is basically a cheeseburger with grilled onions, and 1000 island with a side of fries and a banana/cookies & cream milkshake. The burger itself was pretty tasty. Classic diner style burger, good amount of salt and 1/3lb. They had some chopped Romain lettuce, but honestly I think for aesthetics, one big piece of lettuce would go a long way. The fries were tasty, like in-n-out style fries, but actually cooked well. Great fries for sure. One of the chefs was making this chipotle sauce, and I asked if I could try some, and honestly way Better than ranch or ketchup. That sauce should definitely become a regular on the menu. The milkshake was delicious, the combo of fresh bananas and the cookies & cream was the perfect sweet treat. Passed by this burger joint on the way to a movie theater and decided to have dinner here after the movie. At 7PM on a Sunday, it wasn't too busy. We were able to choose between a regular table or the bar stools. The restaurant has a wide menu with various burgers, sandwiches, and desserts. We ordered the Paul Kanter burger and The Works. Overall the burgers were really good, but order is just the burger by its self--not including sides or fries. Ambiance is nice, old-fashioned burger joint/ soda shop style. I ran in here for a sandwich on a Saturday. The place is the same but I haven't been here in years . I ordered a Ruben and potato salad . I sat outside lucky because there a couple of unruly children randomly screaming.Parents just allowed it ? The Ruben was ok not bad but the potato salad was the blandest I had ever had . When I got back and told where I had been they asked why because obviously they knew . I guess the place is ok for kids LOL. I've been coming to Bill's since I was a kid. It's had its ups and downs. One thing has been consistent and that's the quality of the meat. Recently, I've come back a couple times and the burgers are still great but the FRIES are absolutely delicious! Whatever changes they made to the fries is working and they are great! Home of the "Best Banana Milk Shake in San Francisco" and Amazing Hamburgers, their Anniversary Burger is special, if not huge, huge patties, all the sides, a great bun, cheese and I had their Thousand Island topping, no bacon. Service was quick and food was out with 10 minutes of ordering. The only service item missing was they did not check in with us after the food was dropped off. We dropped in after the Hot Chocolate Run on a Sunday afternoon. When we arrived, we were greeted by a really friendly guy who took us to the table. It wasn't very busy at around 12 noon and a regular customer said it was unusually quiet. The menu is five pages with a good variety of food, even with healthy options. They grind their own meat for the burgers and wash and cut their own fries. From the look of the sweet potato fries, they might cut those too. My son loved his Patty Melt. I had The Works which was a cheeseburger with mushrooms, avocado, and bacon with lettuce and no bread while my friend had it served with no cheese and a French Roll. My husband had the Giants Burger which was bacon and cheese with avocado but they forgot his avocado. The fries and sweet potato fries tasted fresh but had absolutely no seasoning. The meat was very dry and rather plain in taste. None of our orders were cooked to our request. Three were overcooked and one was underdone. I don't think we'll be back. read more

Service and wait staff is solid and friendly! It does take time to make perfection, so it's well worth any wait. Then the fries - crap, I died with the fries. You can't have one, then you can't have just one order. I typically get two with my burger because they are so good. The dining area is your classic grill - spinner stools at the serving bar and tables from front to back. Spacious! It pains me to give Bill's a mediocre review because I've literally been a lifelong customer, dining there as a toddler c. 1972. One thing that I always loved about the place is that it rarely changed. A gazillion years ago in the early 80s, they switched from potato chips to fries as the standard side. And at one point they used Double Rainbow ice cream before switching to Dreyers for the last 35 years or so. Other than that, Bill's was always pretty much the same. Until this year. Granted I hadn't visited in like 9 months... but I noticed a few things. Some positive: new tables and chairs... good move, Bill's. And new shoestring-width fries similar to In-N-Out... still fresh-cut, still excellent. BUT... they've switched to Pepsi products instead of Coke. I don't actually drink soft drinks anymore but whenever a restaurant downgrades to Pepsi, you know they're in cost-cutting mode. Sorry but it's true. Which brings me to my main complaint: the burger meat. Always and forever, Bill's used very high-quality fresh ground chuck. I know quality burger meat, and Bill's had it. But now it doesn't. My burger was very dry and flavorless, with meat reminiscent of cheapo Safeway bulk-pack ground beef. Sigh. To the person at Bill's who had the bright idea to goose profits by cutting meat quality: STOP and reconsider your life choices. read more
