Today Bill's Tree Care came and removed a City tree that was deemed diseased by city arborist. Bill was a pleasure to work with and his professional services where priced very well. Other companies were going to charge $540 to remove river rock from the base of the tree which measured 4' x 4'. My husband and I are 70 and 60 respectively, and without asking how.much to have his crew remove he said we'll take care of that, no additional charge. So appreciated. Bill's Tree Care has been doing our tree trimming and maintenance for years. We are always extremely satisfied with their work crew, knowledge of trees and cleanup. We have a 30 year old Japanese Maple which they thin and sculpt each year. A Privet Tree, which grows so fast, they shape perfectly and four birch trees which they thin and keep so healthy. It really makes a difference health and appearance wise when you take care of your trees and don't let them grow out of control. Bill's Tree service certainly knows how to do this. They have been in business a long time and are very reasonably price for the great work they do. read more

This review is not regarding their tree care. Their workers seem inconsiderate and park blocking other neighbors' driveways. Even when I was having trouble backing out of my driveway because their car was partially blocking it, their worker didn't even bother to move the truck or look up from his phone even though he was sitting in the driver's seat. I know they saw me because he and his other coworker looked up at me when I was getting in the car. read more

I hired Bill Jr. for a good-sized job several years ago, and his lack of professionalism left me so dismayed that I still feel the need post a review, even after 2 other (better) arborists have worked on our trees since. I have 4 giant oak trees on my property that had previously been "lion-tailed," which means the smaller limbs were shaved clean and only the leaves at the ends of large limbs were left. As a result, some of them were in bad shape. We had an oak expert come and get the trees properly trimmed so that they could grow back healthily. Unfortunately, this was very expensive, so when Bill gave us a better quote, I decided to give him a try, even though he was a bit on the pushy side and reminded me of a used-car salesperson. Because he was a certified arborist, we would be in good hands, especially since I specifically pointed out that the tree was still healing from being cut poorly, and asked that it not be "lion-tailed" again. Unfortunately, I arrived home to find two freshly lion-tailed oaks, and Bill's guys in a third tree that was halfway done in the same way. When I called Bill, he quickly had the guys stop work and tried to make sure the rest of the work was done to my specifications. I expressed my disappointment that our trees had finally started healing, only to once again be improperly cut, but Bill Jr. neglected to acknowledge that there was any wrongdoing, and got very defensive and loud on the phone, saying, "Are you trying to tell me I butchered your tree?" Actually, that is exactly what he did. In the end, I paid the full amount that was quoted, but Bill never finished trimming several dead branches that were left dangling in full view, even after he told me he would. Also, I was promised wood chips from our trees or another job, and they never materialized. I've learned since then not to trust anyone that sounds like they're in it for a quick sale; to be obnoxiously clear about what you want, and get it in writing; and to be there for the job so you can watch workers like a hawk. These were expensive lessons that I hope others won't have to learn the hard way by hiring these folks. read more

They use gas leaf blowers that are illegal in Los Altos, Palo Alto and most of the other cities because of the pollution they cause. I told the worker that they were not allowed to use the gas leaf blower and he used it anyway. read more

There was a mix up of when Bill Jr. was suppose to be at my house. We had scheduled a 4:30 pm appt. but he showed up at 1:00 pm (while I was at work). At first I was not pleased at this mix up, but found that he had done an estimate on the exact trees that I wanted work done on and left it on my doorstep. City tree was over grown, so they trimmed it up nice and tight. It's hard to get use to (I miss my lush tree) but I know it's best for the tree. I also had a horribly diseased Tulip Magnolia that needed to be removed. I got the quote on Tuesday, said OK on Wednesday and that day (in between jobs) Bill and his crew came in and did the work! I tried to tell him I can possibly work that out but he simply decided to hang up on me. I would never recommend this company to anyone ever! Hi, I just got home and saw the great work Bill's team did today. Their bid was below everyone else's and they did an excellent job trimming my neighbor's tree which hangs into my yard...they left some long branches on my neighbor's side that will make him happy (my neighbor didn't want it cut too much, but I hate all the droppings in my yard), yet cleared everything off my yard, and the clean-up job was great! The bid came in quick, and the work was done within days. Since it is my neighbor's tree I am always worried about hiring someone who lacks the skill, but Bill's did an amazing job and is very professional. Hire them! read more

Not too long ago, I had somewhere between 10 and 15 cubic yards worth of junky wood chips/mulch dropped off at my house by another tree service company. And when I say it was junky, I mean that it was full of leaves, pines, and limes. From this huge pile, I was able to separate out enough for my personal use. This left a few yards leftover (that were useless), which were in my driveway and had begun decomposing at an accelerated rate (i.e., the mulch at the bottom of the pile was hot, and would smoke a bit). Anyway, I didn't want to call the previous tree service company to clean it up as I was obviously disappointed with them so I called up Bill's Tree Care & Landscaping to clear our my driveway and haul away the junk. Within a couple of hours, I had a free estimate, and within a few hours after that, my driveway was spotless! And I mean SPOTLESS!!! I couldn't find a single leftover wood chip, or pine, or leaf, or lime anywhere! I was extremely impressed. Ah the joys of homeownership! Bill and his crew really helped us out in a jam when we woke up to find a HUGE (think Mack Truck sized) tree limb from our terror of a Liquidambar (Sweetgum) tree had crashed down on our neighbors lawn the day that she was supposed to have prospective buyers come an put in an offer. Needless to say, we were all frantic (though grateful that it didn't go through her roof or land on her car). Bill and his team came right over, quoted us a reasonable rate, chopped that sucker up and even got up into the tree and cleaned up the break site about 30 ft up the trunk. They were fast, diligent and cleaned everything up. It looks like it never happened. He also made extensive recommendations about how to manage the city of San Jose's absurd tree laws and get this horrible tree removed (it's heaving the sidewalk, drops those spiky balls and is just a general nuisance). He also provided quotes to prune the tree and/or to help with permitting and removing it all together. read more

I needed to have a 30 foot birch tree removed from my side yard. I had used Bill's Tree service for a larger job 13 years ago and had a great experience, but wondered whether they were still up to doing a great job. But their estimate was lower than I expected so I decided to use them again. It was about noon when I called and it turned out that Bill had a team which was available. He said they would be at my house in about an hour and a half which turned out to be almost exact. A team of four led by Michael showed up and got right to work. They were real pros. One man equipped with a chain saw began removing branches, climbing the tree and removing more branches. The other three took the branches to their wood chipper and the tree rapidly began to disappear into their truck. Michael brought in their stump grinder and as soon as the tree was down, he started grinding down the stump and exposed roots. The team was in and out in less than an hour and the tree is gone. I needed a tree removed, the stump ground, and the wood cut into fireplace length. I also needed another tree trimmed back from the house. After I got several estimates, based on Yelp reviews I ended up hiring Bill's, even though they were 40% more expensive (4 figures) than the other estimates. When I called to make the appt, we confirmed a time first thing the next morning. He also agreed to reduce the estimate by $100, but it still didn't come close to others. The next morning BIll called to tell me his crew had other things scheduled and they would show up around noon. They finally showed up at 1:30pm, and promptly sat down for an hour lunch. They got the job done in 2 1/2 hours and cleaned up well, but because of the lateness, they couldn't do the stump grinding, so I had to stay at home a second day from work. Also, it was a good thing I was home, as they would have chipped the wood they were supposed to cut and leave, saying they had been instructed to do that due to the lateness. All in all, despite their quickness, cleanliness, because of the lack of punctuality, my needing to adjust my schedule to them, and the high price, I can't give them more than 3 stars. read more

We hired Bill's Tree Care & Landscape to do a "visual inspection" of the trees on a property we were in the process of purchasing. The property is in a somewhat remote area with large redwood trees. Bill arrived at the property and proceeded to walk around the home and provided no real insight into the safety of the trees. Basically his advice was, "I can't say whether the trees are safe or unsafe." He then gave us an estimate to limb up the trees of roughly $10,000 with many caveats and areas where he said he couldn't work. Fast forward one month and we move into our new house and on the second night a large redwood tree limb crashes through our roof and into our future baby's room. When we contacted Bill for a refund of the inspection money he then wrote a very long and detailed email telling us all the reasons why he couldn't give us a refund and why he had given us many different warnings and all the different reasons why the accident may have occurred. His email was drastically different from the advice he gave us during the visual inspection. We were able to hire another company to do tree limbing and pruning and the cost was $3,400 for the exact same work that Bill had quoted as being $10,000. After our experience I would not recommend Bill's Tree Care & Landscape service. His company may do a better job in a more urban settings, however, the fact that his prices are extremely high and he provided such drastically different responses from our two encounters with him.....I would stay clear of him and his company. read more

This company was contracted by my neighbor to perform tree trimming. They did a fine job tree-trimming. What they did not do well was 1- ask my permission or inform me they would be on my property trimming my neighbor's trees and 2- be careful to not damage my rose trees that were under the neighbor's tree. They caused damage to my plants and were not going to even say anything until I saw them on my surveillance camera causing damage. Bill responded back and said he would compensate me (a small amount) for my damaged rose tree and never did, despite his promise and repeated attempts to contact him. We've used Bill's Tree Care in the past few years when we've needed our two trees pruned and were pretty satisfied (punctual, did what needed, reasonably priced, and cleaned up completely) - we dealt with Bill Jr. those times. But their last visit back in May 2013 left a lot to be desired : they came out to do the estimate, they showed up 1 hour early at 8am when I was still scrambilng to get my daughter out the door to school on time - at least it was quick, though the quote was 33% more than last time. I booked them anyway, thinking they did a good job the previous times. The day they were supposed to come and cut the trees, no one showed up, but I at least got a call at the end of the day with a reasonable explanation and to reschedule. 2nd time around, AGAIN, no one showed up. This time NO ONE called, and when I called Bill Sr., I got an unapologetic " well I don't know why we scheduled you for this day because we were already booked". Okay.. that should've been my cue to canx the work, but I just wanted to get this over with. So I rescheduled for the 3rd time. The day before I called just to confirm and got a rather brusque "yea we'll be there. I'm with another customer now" Finally a crew showed up on the 3rd time (but late) and without any passdown it seemed. Because in addition to the tree pruning, I had also asked for some shrub pruning and rose plant removal ... had I not been home, they would've just done a tree pruning. Anyway, the tree pruning was okay, but the shrub pruning was literally just lopping off the top branches, and no pruning per se. Plus they failed to clean up a lot of branches from the ground. To top it all off, no one came to get me for the payment when they finished ( I was right there people!) so I had to follow up with a check in the mail. Pricey, poor customer service, C- job, no accountability = 1 star and no repeat business from me in the future. read more

I had 10 tall Italian Cypress trees that I wanted to get removed. I contacted about 6 tree removal companies and only 3 showed up for estimates. Bill's Tree Care had the best price and actually showed up for the estimate at the agreed upon time and followed up with phone calls after the estimate. Bill Jr. was always quick to return calls and easy to deal with. The work was completed in 2 days and the crew worked hard and were friendly. They completed the job based on the estimated price and cleaned up nicely. (Although I ended up with alot of tree mulch.) read more

I have used Bill's Tree Care for several years, from an emergency call when painters almost destroyed a ten year old bougainvilla to trimming a thirty year old plum to planting new/replacing old trees. Bill 1 (papa) or Bill 2 (son) are always prompt, patient, and professional. I recommend them without reservation. I don't always know what I need, but I count on them to help me take care of my beloved trees as well as my wallet. (How many service providers will say something is too costly?) We are partners in caring for my trees, although Bill is senior partner as he's the expert...not me. A perfect relationship! I am a new customer and could not have been happier with Bill's Tree Care. I submitted a request on their website and received a phone call soon after sending the request. I was able to setup and appointment for Bill to come out that day and look at my trees. Bill gave me a quote and said he could probably have a crew do the work that day if that was agreeable to me. That was more than I had expected and was very happy that they could do the work so soon. They were also less money than the prior tree trimming service I used who was unreliable and expensive. High but I don't mind paying for quality work. 3 weeks later Bill drives by and tells me he hasn't forgotten about me and will be back on Wednesday. Bill was the first to respond when I emailed companies for estimates. They were the lowest among the experienced, professional companies. (important to use a legit service when work on big trees around power lines is involved I thought) On the day of the work, the team showed up on time. They worked quickly and efficiently and did a good job and completed everything they were supposed to. The guys were all nice and cooperative when I asked them to trim some more in a couple of spots. They explained what was best for the tree and knew how to trim the city tree near the street according to city code. Cleaned up after themselves completely (and hauled all the stuff away, and didn't leave anything in the street for the city cleanup like some services wanted to do). Crew seemed experienced and in good spirits. I was surprised all of the guys spoke English too, which was helpful. Would hire them again. read more

I've used Bill's Tree service to remove two 60 foot+ trees impeding on my house/foundation and to plant three 24Gal and two 15Gal trees. There was confusion over scheduling, similar to other posts, so maybe they need to focus on improving that in 2013, but the overall quality of their work was satisfactory and I would use them a fourth time if the opportunity presents itself. read more

We had a very over grown avocado tree that was badly in need of trimming and reshaping. Based on other Yelp reviewers I asked for estimates from Bill's Tree Care and Landscape and one other company who had been highly rated by several reviewers. The other company did not show up as requested to provide an estimate, however Bill Jr. from Bill's came by on the day and time they had scheduled for us. He inspected the tree, made some recommendations on its maintencance and provided a very reasonable quote for the work that was required. He also provided a copy of their liability insurance coverage, their business and contractors license information, his certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, and a list of residential and commercial customer references. Bill's demeanor was always respectful and courteous and the professionalism with which his crew worked reflected his own. His team was on time, and did a great job of pruning and shaping the tree with excelletn clean up when they were finished. A couple of days later I did notice that there was one small branch that just didn't look quite right. When I called to mention it Bill Jr. promptly came by the house, noted the branch I wanted removed and again had his crew out the same afternoon to clip it from the high location it was in. This was after they had been paid and impressed me with their committment to great service. In February, I contracted with Bill's Tree Care to repair some sprinkler heads, damaged as a result of a city sidewalk repair, along with installing a new sod lawn. Bill assured me they would do a professional job and I would be completely satisfied with their work. They were very anxious for the work and wanted to start as soon as possible. When I stated that his was the first bid I had received thus far, he assured me that his price was competitive, but deducted $500, if I signed and provided a $1000 deposit right away. The work began on Monday, 2/11. On Wednesday, 2/13, I received a call requesting half the total payment be made ASAP. Another $3000, which was not part of the original agreement, nor stated in the contract. The sprinklers and lawn were completed at 6:00PM, Friday, 2/15, and a final check of $4000 was written. The planting of new plants was not part of the written contract, but, Bill said that they would come back and plant them as soon as I purchased them. The sprinklers by the street were spraying approx 6 feet out into the street and needed to be adjusted. I had also requested that an area 3 and 4 feet in diameter be cleared of sod around 2 trees. After repeated promises to complete, they came back on 2/27 to fix the sprinklers and cut the sod. (The sod was not cut to the diameter requested and I had to correct the following morning). In May, we had some additional hardscaping done on the front of the house and then purchased our plants. I contacted Bill's to come plant the plants as they had promised and to make some final adjustments to the sprinklers so that they would not get water on a new wooden railing and stone work. Bill refused to come back unless they were paid more money. Several depressions have developed in the new lawn requiring the sod to be cut up and backfilled with additional soil. Bill's my do a fine job with trees, but I would not recommend for landscaping. read more
