As a CHARLOTTE Engineering graduate and SigEp alumnus, I travel back and forth to Charlotte at least 10 times a year. I remember stopping at Bill's as a far back as the early '80s. On this trip, I was on my way to the CHARLOTTE 49ers men's basketball game vs. Tulane. On the way down, I stopped to use the restroom. I noticed that they serve Exxon gas (I use the Exxon-Mobil app whenever I can). Being the Architecture and Americana enthusiast -- and let's not forget Yelpie -- I snapped a lot of pictures. On the way down, I didn't have time to stop and eat, and I decided it would be better to get gas on the way home, so I planned to stop again after the game. Bill's Truck Stop is a long-standing, family-oriented truck stop and restaurant serving travelers, truckers, and locals. It's a full-service stop right off I-85 near Salisbury/Linwood, offering fuel, Country and Southern comfort food, and a range of traveler amenities in a more "old-school" atmosphere compared to modern corporate travel plazas. It never closes -- open 24 hours a day. It's easily noticeable by its tall sign and "Big Bill," a towering fiberglass figure originally installed decades ago as an eye-catching roadside attraction. The property includes a convenience store paired with the Exxon station on the left, the restaurant in the middle, and a store on the right selling auto and truck supplies, clothing, and other merchandise. On my way down, I picked up ice scrapers, anticipating an approaching ice storm in North Carolina. On the way home -- after the 49ers were victorious -- I stopped to sample the restaurant, go to the bathroom, and get gas. I sat down at the counter and was greeted very warmly and hospitably, in both classic Southern and truck-stop wait-staff style. It seemed as if before the words "I'll have coffee" left my mouth, a cup of hot Joe was already in front of me -- really good diner-style coffee, the kind that keeps truckers and motorists alert all night. Livermush can be hard to find in parts of Eastern North Carolina, so I decided to order breakfast. I had livermush, sunny-side-up eggs, hash browns with onions and peppers covered in melted cheese, and a very large biscuit. It was all very delicious. The counter area was very clean. The restaurant décor and furniture are dated -- in a good way -- going back to the 1960s when the truck stop first opened to serve Interstate-85 traffic. The kitchen is in plain view and very clean, which adds a level of trust and transparency. In addition to the counter, there are tables and chairs as well as booths. This is a classic "greasy spoon" diner and mom-and-pop truck stop -- I love its nostalgic feel. The menu features classics such as country-style steak, meatloaf, fried chicken, and chicken and dumplings. They also offer a solid selection of hearty soups, salads and slaw, hamburgers, hot dogs and other sandwiches, and fried seafood bites. I can't wait to return and sample more menu items. Imagine having a Salisbury steak in Salisbury! The men's room was exceptionally clean and smelled nice -- especially impressive for a truck stop or travel plaza. After I ate and used the restroom, I went out and pumped gas using the Exxon-Mobil app. The pump worked well, and the handle was fully intact -- I didn't have to squeeze it the entire fill-up in the cold, which I appreciated. I plan on heading back and wholeheartedly recommend this truck stop and travel plaza to anyone needing gas, a clean restroom, automobile or truck parts and supplies, souvenir clothing, water, soda or snacks, and a hot, delicious comfort-food meal. And yes -- it's also worth stopping just to take a selfie with Big Bill. read more

What a unique experience! Bill's Truck Stop is located off of I-85 just South of Lexington. It has that western truck stop feel, and is filled with great people and good food! The food is great, but unfortunately did take a while to come out. For truckers on a time crunch, this may not be for you. The eggs and hash browns are hot n' fresh (as they should) but nothing particularly special. The bacon was way overcooked. The biscuits are buttery and homemade! The tables were clean, but the floor beneath our feet was dirty (food, napkins, etc...) The servers are great, and check on you often. For what you get, it is a good price! $29 for two meals including a tip is a good deal! There is also an Exxon that you can fill up at, including a gas station portion if you don't want to dine at the restaurant. Breakfast is served all day. read more

I have always liked Bill's we have went there for over 20 years but here lately something has happened to the management or staff. I have called on 2 separate times for a pickup order and the person I spoke with never put my order in. One time I waited the 20 minutes to fix the food this last time I was angry and not in the mood to wait. I mean they were not busy the guy takes my order and just never bothered to put it in. I've been trucking for almost 20 years, and I'll never understand the cult following these "quaint mom-and-pop truck stops" get. People act like they're some kind of Route 66 time capsule. Newsflash: Bill's isn't charming, it's just...old. Like, "grandpa's recliner that should've been burned in '92" old. The bathrooms? Two urinals (one's basically a doorstop), two stalls (one with a lock, if you're lucky), and a single sink for everyone. Want to find it? Hope you enjoy your side gig as a waiter because you'll be walking behind the restaurant counter like you're about to refill drinks. The food? Imagine buying the cheapest stuff at Walmart, sprinkling on seasoned salt, and calling it "home cooking." That's the vibe. Bonus entertainment: three old guys at the counter, holding the kind of conversations that make you question your career choices. The store? Outdated doesn't even cover it. Picture a time machine set to "sad gas station in 1984" and you'll get the idea. The parking lot? Dusty gravel moonscape that turns into quicksand if it rains. Bring a shovel and maybe a priest. Yes, the people are nice. But let's stop pretending "nice people" makes up for bathrooms that double as obstacle courses and food that tastes like a dare. So I owe money to several corporations? Fine. Send me the Bill's. I absolutely love this tiny diner, hidden away in the middle of nowhere, tucked off the highway at a rural exit, in North Carolina right alongside Interstate 85, about half an hour or more north of Charlotte on the northwest side of the highway. So when you're heading southbound it's very convenient and absolutely delicious and even though the parking lot gets really crowded, it's a good place to sleep over as well. I highly recommend it, and we'll be here for din dins on many occasions in future, so support these independent places over your bix box Flying J, Love's, Pilot and TA please - before they are lost forever. Oh and as for what to order, everything they make (that I've had) tasted great, but the Pot Roast is the standout, peeps. read more

For most folks choosing where to eat is a simple task however when you are 80 feet long it's not quite as simple. I've been by this place a gazillion times in the past umpteen years but every time I've come the lot was full. Today seems to be my day, to actually get in here and try it out. The place could be a tad bit intimidating for the tender folks but those of us that has been down the road and back a few times this old road house is a welcome sight. You can enter either thru the convenience store or through the truck stop side the restaurant is in the middle of both. This place is packed nearly every table is occupied so I choose a counter spot tat offers an excellent view of the kitchen. The kitchen staff is certainly operating like well oiled machine and absolutely no nonsense going on. My drink order is promptly taken and the specials are shown to me. I opt for the Liver and Onions just to be denied they are out of liver. I instead request the spot Roast special with mashed taters, green beans and cornbread and banana/pineapple pudding for the finish. I am satisfied completely and utterly happy it's great to be back in the south. The portions are generous and there is definitely some heart and soul put into all of this food. A quick glance around the dining room confirms that so many others agree. This has been a great visit with taking the time to listen to the locals and getting the history of Bills Truck Stop. For a place Tha s been dishing it out since 1968 they are all obviously doing something right. So if you should find yourself hungry in the area of exit 86 on the 85 in Linwood, NC do yourselves a huge favor and stop in to Bills! They will make you feel right at home. read more

Food was amazing enough though my steak was slightly over cooked. The store is surprisingly a gem to walk through.

It's not bad food at all but it's just really hard to navigate ordering and pick up the staff isn't real willing to help.

gas pump says pay inside, so I go inside. no one there at register or in that side. go over to food side and lady at register refers me back to other side, so I start walking back. on way pass pink/red haired lady who looks pissed/disgusted and throws hands up in air as she walks passed me. I fihire she is with someone there. get to register and she walks back over to register. tell her I want gas and leav card to go pump (don't know how much it will take). finish pumping and start back inside. she is outside talking to someone and sees me walk back in and starts over. to me when she walked in she looked pissed/disgusted/ unhappy that i interrupted her and it was a bother I was there. My experience was good there salad's are amazing and definitely worth the money the portion is way more then you can eat at one time! I've got the ham salad, grilled chicken salad and the regular house salad from here before and there all amazing! I would definitely stay AWAY from the steak tho as that's not very good at all but luckily they didn't charge me for it and let me get something different instead! But also with that being said the waitresses and waiters up there are all super nice/friendly and I'll definitely be eating back here again real soon!!:) read more

We stopped here on a trip to Ga to meet up with our friends who where traveling with us that day. Well it never fails the wife has to go to the bathroom. She claimed it was the worse bathroom she had ever been in. She has never meet a bathroom she didn't like until that day. Besides that this is a really cool truck stop with almost anything and everything you could ever want for the road. Good place to stop for gas, but maybe avoid the bathrooms. read more

This place isn't a bad little truck stop restaurant, but I was also a bit disappointed with a couple things. My husband and I decided to have a late lunch there. The pros: awesome sweet tea, the waitresses make sure to keep your coffee cup full, amazing homemade corn bread, and very fresh vegetables for their salads. The cons: they were out of chicken and rice soup at 1:30 in the afternoon, the grilled chicken salad was small and not worth the $7.25 I paid, and only consisted of shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and 3 slices of cucumber. There was a hearty-sized chicken breast chopped up on the salad, but there wasn't even any shredded cheese on the salad. At least now I know if I ever eat here again that it's way more worth it to get a full meal than a salad. My husband got the liver and onion meal and he loved it. read more

Don't let the appearance discourage you. The parking lot is a dust pit (unless it rains....) and no telling how many vehicles (cars, trucks, state troopers...) will be crammed in there. The building is old..... very old and worn. But the people are friendly and attentive, and although I can't speak for the rest of the menu Breakfast was spot on! It's a good old fashioned greasy spoon. Prices are fair! But don't go in if you're in a hurry. They got one speed, and it ain't fast. But if you've got time it's worth the stop. read more

I live in the area and I am a frequent guest. The food is inexpensive, staff is friendly, and the quality is good. However, they have been off their game for a while. Tonight was the worst. Although there was practically no one in the restaurant, the tables were still dirty. We chose a cleaner table but the floor beneath was covered in either sugar or salt. The waitress was friendly but frazzled. So frazzled, she actually dropped some of my food on the floor when she rounded the corner. But, hey, it happens and she quickly replaced what was dropped. During our meal, the kitchen staff got heated. We actually heard the kitchen staff yelling about the filthy and speculating about when the kitchen might burn down due to the filth. Really?? That ruined my appetite. I planned to bring this faux pax to the attention of the cashier but, after seeing his disheveled appearance, decided to keep my complaints to myself. On the way out, I noticed their sanitation grade was only 4 points above a "C". Please, y'all, clean up your place and bring back your professional employees. You have deep roots in the community and you can do better than this. read more
