Visiting my home town of Mt Holly, NC, we tried to coordinate a meal with family but only were able to so for breakfast. We had eaten great seafood & BBQ in the past but I never realized they also had great breakfast also. Six of us, including my 99 year young Aunt, met at 8:00 AM at Billy's. From a broad menu, I chose my regional favorite - livermush. A mix of pork cuts, excluding the prime cuts, ground & simmered with spices and cornmeal. Similar to Scrapple but has a good amount of liver, which makes it healthier than bacon, ham or sausage. But not much availability outside south central NC. Mine with over easy eggs and grits. My wife chose the Western omelette. Two others also choose the same meal as mine. The meat was crispy outside and soft inside, perfect! Some places serve two thinner slices but Billy's has one thicker and larger slice. Eggs were perfect and grits were devine, and a lot of grits, couldn't eat all. My wife also loved the omelette. Coffee was hot and great, refills often. Service was great, even when we stretched our meal to share conversations. Breakfast, BBQ, seafood - they do it all well!

Chopped BBQ sandwich, Fries and something that they called "Cole slaw" but tastes more like applesauce

I've been looking for a BBQ spot by my work for a little bit now. I will not be back here. The service was really slow. I ordered to-go food, when I showed up I saw my food on the counter. I watched a few servers walk around and look at me without anyone greeting me. After about 8 minutes of standing at the counter one of the servers comes up to the counter and asks if I had a to-go order. I said yes and held out my card, she turned around and walked in the kitchen. I almost walked out when I heard the woman call someone from the back to come greet me. Another woman walks out and asks what I need.... I told her I had placed a to-go order. She looks around and I pointed to the bag on the counter and she looks at it and says "oh, I think this is your food." They weren't rude or anything, just very low functioning. Then I got back to work and opened my food..... Just to be straight forward, this was the soggiest food I have ever eaten, the fries had no salt or seasoning, the barbecue was very bland, and the "Cole slaw" was apple flavored and very watery at the bottom. The bun and fries were soaking wet when I opened the box which I understand happens with to go food but they shouldn't be dripping... I'm not sure who taught these people to cook but I would not count this place as a barbecue restaurant. Bad service is fixable, bad cooking is not. I'm sorry!

Good country restaurant when your not in a rush. The reviews are great but the food was good. They are understaffed. Service was great considering she was solo. If you want a meat and 2 sides and aren't in a rush, this is a good choice. Atmosphere is nothing fancy. Think old, tired diner.

This is where the locals eat. Make sure to ask what's good from your waitress, ours was straight up and told us the meatloaf is terrible! Haha. They have a good selection of food to choose from with large portions. We had a great meal and Yes the sweet tea is good! Sure it's no cool trendy spot but if you want some good ol family food with a diner feel then this is the spot.

This spot was decided upon because it was local and close to our job site. The staff was nice and the food was alright. I do not have much to say about this place.

My mom brought me here because she has been several times and says its good (she's a tough critic). I had the lasagna which was a nice sized portion and pretty good I must say. It came with a fresh salad and the dressing was homemade, not the watered down stuff. My sister ate the pork chops and said those were good and the fries were crispy and delicious. My mom has tried everything but this time she had a BBQ sandwich and claimed she would order it again. The staff was very friendly and cordial. My only complain was the stuffing in the booths are a little worn out and not so comfy anymore.

Great food and went there for years, but stopped when the bathroom was locked on me, and think customers were in on it. Will never be back.

Absolutely terrible bland food. Other restuarants near by with much better food for sure. Seems like vegetables right out of can...awful!

But the staff didnt need them they have the charm and personality that makes you look forward to the next visit. Located in a 50 style drive in hamburger stand with a wide space dining area with outside seating. Not like the modern fake built to looklike we see now. This place dates back to the 1960's and they have worked to maintain the feel of that time. Like many others, I grew up in small town American in the 1950 and 1960's You walk back and it's a throw back in time to when we were younger. The crowd is older but like me, most are trying to experience a time long since gone. You walk it the door and order from the counter, and they give you a cup for your drink and a tent for your table. I ordered the LottaBBQ which is sliced BBQ along with a side of Mozzarella Sticks. The slice BBQ was very good but came with a Lexington Style (tomato based) Sauce on the side. At least it was on the side. I prefer my BBQ with an Eastern NC Pepper Vinegar Sauce. I had asked to hold off on the Slaw which is characteristic but not because of the taste. Most places in the Carolinas who served slaw on burgers, hot dogs and BBQ call it Carolina Style. My problem is that Slaw starts to exude Cabbage Juice in about an hour and your generally end up with a Soggy Sandwich which I do not like so generally I tell them to just hold off on it. I also ordered Mozzarella Sticks on the side with Marinara Sauce. Generally pretty good except they were cold. Love the retro feel and I feel I was back in HS in Brevard NC back in the 1960"s In aback is covered area that houses a lot of cars. I suspect at one time this was a drive in and may have even had car hops but only speculation on my part. Food is great and again I love the atmosphere. Fun place to have lunch.

Mac's sits in the heart of South End and shares the neighborhood with several busy bars and nightlife spots. Parking can be a bit of an adventure, but they do have dedicated lots nearby. Once you're there, the setup is great: a large dining room, plenty of picnic-table patio seating, and my favorite option--a seat at the outdoor bar where the inside bar opens through a service window to the patio. The bartender, Alyssa, was fantastic. Friendly, knowledgeable, and patient while I stared at the giant menu trying to figure out what I wanted. When I asked for recommendations, she immediately suggested the burnt ends, BBQ baked beans, and Mexican street corn. Excellent call. The blackberry seasonal hard cider she recommended was delicious and paired beautifully with the meal. My only surprise was the price. At nearly $9, it was more than I expected for a cider, and I wish I had asked beforehand. The burnt ends arrived with bright pickled red onions that added the perfect acidic balance. The flavor was excellent--smoky, rich, and satisfying. That said, they leaned heavily toward the fatty side. The deeper I got into the serving, the more rendered fat I encountered compared to meat. Delicious? Yes. Light? Absolutely not. The BBQ baked beans were exactly what you want from a barbecue joint. The Mexican street corn was a standout and a refreshing contrast to all the richness. My only critique was that the burnt ends weren't served quite as hot as I would have liked, and by the end of the meal, the richness became overwhelming. That's probably more on me for ordering burnt ends at 9 p.m. than on Mac's. The final bill came to about $37 before tip, which felt a little steep for a solo barbecue dinner and cider. Looking back, I'd probably visit during lunch. Their weekday lunch specials around $10 look like one of the best values in South End. Would I come back? Absolutely. The service was warm, the recommendations were spot on, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the food delivered exactly what a barbecue craving calls for. Next time, I'll arrive earlier, bring a bigger appetite, and maybe save the burnt ends for lunchtime. Life is too short not to eat well, Charlotte. If you're exploring South End and craving barbecue, Mac's Speed Shop is worth a stop.

They didn't promise "fall off the bone" so I can't expect that, but most places I get ribs they just tear apart. This took work, and the mass of BBQ sauce slathered on makes the surgery a mess. So, that was a bummer. The tots lack creativity or any sort of seasoning which seems like an easy upgrade and a crowd pleaser. Oh well. Maybe I got there in a bad day, but if this is standard then I can't see not going to Noble Smoke next time I need ribs.
