I visited Tupelo for the first time while attending my sorority's convention in Charlotte, and it did not disappoint! The food was absolutely delicious--so good that we came back the very next day. On my first visit, I had the fried green tomatoes and grits, and they were amazing. The next day, I went with the chicken and waffles, and they were just as delicious. The staff was warm, friendly, and incredibly accommodating, making the experience even better. I even told the manager/owner that I had found my new favorite brunch spot. Inside has such a great old southern vibe, and the hostess is very welcoming as soon as you walk through the door. I met a dear old friend here, and I felt like we were at a friend's home. Had a nice brunch before a show here on Sunday morning. The restaurant is very bright and lively, and we were seated very quickly when we arrived. I love the charming decor and look of the place, very homey feeling right in the middle of the city. Our server took our drink order and gave us time to look over the menu. My choice is easy if shrimp and grits is on the menu, so that was it for me. We also had the chicken and waffles and the dish looked very yummy. Asked for it in a to-go box because I knew I would only eat a little and take it back to the office. I received two chicken tenders, plain waffles and a small side of Mac & cheese. When I told my server it was not what I ordered, rather than admitting to getting the order wrong, she proceeded to explain to me that it is what I ordered, but that is how they prepare the mac & cheese waffle when it's to-go. I asked three times is it not mac & cheese prepared as a waffle. I would have accepted this, but I am very familiar with the preparation of a mac & cheese waffle, so I asked that she double-check with the kitchen or manager. Minutes later the manager came out to speak with the other black woman at the bar, who was leaving the restaurant (I can only imagine how the guest was described to the manager when the server went to get her). Once she noticed she should be speaking with me, I asked her to confirm the preparation of the mac & cheese waffle. She told me the waffle is topped with mac & cheese and served, that it is not cooked as a waffle. I then told her I did not want plain waffles or a side of mac & cheese, but I did want chicken. When she did not offer anything else, I said I'll just have the chicken and gave her the mac and waffles back. I did tell her I think the menu should reflect their preparation process, but she explained to me that how it shows on the menu is out of her control. Our orders were taken by 2 servers, who were kind in their serving, but the restaurant is unable to accommodate a large party, clearly. Our food came out 30 minutes spread apart, not at one time. When visiting Charlotte, this is out go-to place for breakfast to build a base before visiting a beer festival and this place gets high marks for food (always delicious, if not particularly healthy), service and atmosphere. Last time I had some fried chicken tenders and biscuits and loved everything, esp the blueberry jelly that came with the biscuits. I didn't have a drink this time but last time I did and it was great. Service is so friendly...everyone is great. If I have one nit to pick, it's that they don't provide dishes designed to be shared with serving spoons. I love my friends but I don't want everyone's fork in my pimento cheese dip, so please provide one. I will note that when I asked for a serving utensil, one was provided fairly promptly but for a shared dish, serving spoons are a blessing.
