I went to Billy's Chowder house on Sunday night with my family. I have been coming here every summer for 40 years. I've never had such a horrible experience at this place. We wait d an hour to sit, which is understandable. Then we waited an hour and 15 minutes to get our food. The food came out at different times for the whole party and some of it was cold and some of the orders were wrong. No one checked in on us, no one apologized for the late service, no apologize for the mistakes. I was in the restaurant industry for 25 years so I understand what it is to be under stressful situation, but nobody tried to apologize or accommodate for their lack of service, late delivery, and their mistakes in the food order. This is completely unacceptable and I will never go here again.. if I owned this restaurant, , I would touch every table and make sure that they were having a good experience and at least apologize for the mistakes or the long wait. Had lunch here today 2/14/25. Was driving by and saw a descent amount of cars in the parking lot and figured it would be a safe choice for lunch. Staff and view were great but cannot say the same for food. Had a bowl of seafood food ($22). It had at most 2 ounces of seafood and was 90% broth. Had a descent flavor. The two packs of oyster crackers gave it some substance. My wife had steamers. Good amount served but couldn't get thru them did to the overwhelming amount of saltiness (just destroyed the flavor). Had visited Billy's on our last visit to Maine and here again for a graduation. I love a whole belly clam and before ordering them our Server Tiffany went to the extra effort to check that the clams they had weren't too large or too small as it turned out they were medium and they were delicious and sweet. I got the large and although a little pricey you get what you pay for. The lobster stew was great with large chunks of lobster. My wife shared my clams and got a Side salad which would be a regular size salad in the restaurants we are accustomed to in the DC area. The chowder here is LEGIT! I will be going here again for that and the cider was decent. I was not as impressed with the other food we ordered. Went there today 6/17/25 the food was just okay definitely not great for sure. Got my bill and the waiter asked if we would like to join the rewards program which why would you not? But until I got my recipe and FYI becarefull they will make a dnake move on your receipt of charging you $10.00 to join the rewards program which I was never told about a change for a rewards program. Was up in the Wells area for business. Got there late and hadn't eaten. Looked on the app and went to Billy's since they were open till 9 and it was 815. Got in and seated quickly. Waiter took my order quickly of clam chowder, fried calamari and a fish sandwich. Waiter was also taking care of a large table next to me and that was his focus was for most of the time I was there. Food was mid. Clam chowder had decent flavo, but very little clams. Tons of potatoes, cream and butter. Calamari was also decent. Good quantity but heavy on the frying oil when it came out. Fish sandwich was the best part of the meal and I enjoyed the fish (good amount) and flavorful. Fish was also fried well without the same amount of oil as the calamari. Waiter was still tied up and I saw another waiter bring her table a piece of blueberry pie. I waited as the waiter was explaining and signing up the family on their rewards program (must be a spiff if you sign people up for the waitstaff) since he was so focused on them and explaining every detail. When he came back around I asked for a piece of pie even if it needed to go. He explained that the kitchen was closed. It was 902. Don't really need to cook the pie, just cut a piece, place it in a container and put it a bag. nope adamant about the place closed. I usually tip 20+% but didn't like the attitude or the service. I had the lobster salad. The greens were only chopped iceberg lettuce. There were cherry tomatoes, cukes, and red onions in the mix, making it more appealing. I didn't care for the dressing at all. The lobster serving was massive, though, even more than I could finish, and simply dressed, not buttered. It's pretty much an indoor walk-up window, so ambience is very casual, but it was warm and relaxed on a windy day. Never had this experience here before - even when the wait time was 2/3 times longer than it was today. Never really got the hype about this place, but the family wanted to go. So off we went. Seating for 4 on a Saturday night was 15 minutes, great. Our waitress was lovely and running hard as the place was slammed. Chowders were tasty but thin. Scallop roll was $25 and arrived with 5 semi warm scallops, two large, three small, with a toasted bun lying beside them. Waitress never came back as I said they were super busy. She did get a manager while we were paying the bill. She said the two managers on staff that night were awesome and they would take care of us. Nothing could have been further from the truth. She was already annoyed as she came to our table and really didn't understand why I had an issue paying $5 a scallop. Her reply was, scallops are pricey now and each roll is 5.5 oz. If I had known from reading the menu that was the case I definitely would not have ordered it. She stated I should have said something to the waitress when she came back to check on us the one or two times. As I said the waitress was lovely but I did have to tell her she never came back, only to give us the bill. And get this, THE MANAGER said I don't believe she never checked on you she's one of our best employees. She couldn't have been any ruder. Some of the food was good. Some was mid. The chowder was thoroughly unimpressive, which was ironic considering that it's a chowder house. Sat at the bar for about twenty minutes and waited the whole time trying to just buy one beer. Granted, the bar staff was busy, but they were also spending half of their time doing lemonade prep and deliberately ignored even looking my way to take a beer order that would have taken 5 seconds to fill.
