Three words: steak and seafood. This restaurant is known for its steak and seafood, and after finally trying it, I can see why. I had the 8 oz filet with vegetable medley and roast asparagus. The filet was amazing, perfectly tender and nicely cooked (i ordered medium well, a little too done for my taste but still delicious) and the vegetables were fresh. The asparagus was flawless. We had oysters Rockefeller for an appetizer, and they were great, as well. Ive seen the bad reviews only when people try the pasta and things, so if you go here, i really only recommend the seafood or steak. Its crazy expensive though - for three people we paid $166. Service was great, our waiter was prompt, and if he wasnt there in time to refill our drinks, another waitress or waiter was quick to the punch. 5 stars isn't enough. We visited Roanoke for my nephew's college graduation and chose Billy's to celebrate. The food and service were outstanding. Our waiter, Joel, was top notch and extremely accommodating as was the manager, Matt. So much so that he told us about the restaurant's history and when I asked about possible hauntings he even took me on a tour of the "creepy basement" and told me about the restaurants suspected otherworldly occupants. Post COVID is a crap shoot and we are never sure what to expect. Billy's was a delight. The service was prompt, responsive and appreciative. We sat on the courtyard and Rich was our waiter. He was responsive and solid. Matthew sat is and stopped by several times to see how we were doing. After dessert, he came by with a surprise bottle of champagne to toast us climbing McAfees knob. We had a wonderful dinner. All of the food was delicious, the service was excellent and the Christmas decorations were beautiful.

We have been customers of Billy's for years. The problem is the food is inconsistent. One time it's great! Next time not so, the steak will be over-cooked/under-cooked or the Entree tasteless or the food will come out warm at best. We were very disappointed with our Valentines meal. Considering the price you should be comfortable the meal will be perfection most of the time. We love the atmosphere and the service is perfect & friendly. Salads always delicious. Where do I begin with this unimaginable experience? I arrived at Billy's by myself, never having been to Virginia before. I seated myself at the bar and before Christy, the bartender, could get to me, Octavio, a server that already had numerous tables to attend to stopped to say hello and give me an unanticipated yet phenomenal ice cold glass of water WITH some lemon! Christy made me the most remarkable mojito that I have ever had in my entire life. As I was cherishing every single sip of the mojito I told her that I wanted to eat dessert for dinner...she suggested the creme brûlée. Knowing what high caliber of a mojito that Christy made, I wholeheartedly trusted her recommendation and ordered the creme brûlée. What a stunning and overwhelmingly incredible dessert. Octavio was joined by another server Steve who went out of their way to make me feel welcome and comfortable. They were certainly not lacking on jokes, laughs, and stories. The most impressive part of my evening was the manager, Michael, who gave me specific attention making sure that everything was beyond my wildest expectations. We went to Billy's for brunch. Mine was fantastic. I got eggs, bacon, biscuit and cheese grits. The grits were wonderful. The steak and eggs were sub par. Maybe it was our fault because we weren't expecting prime rib. It was a huge piece of meat and just eggs. No side. No bread. It was overwhelming for brunch. The wrong omelet was brought to our table. The correct omelet was brought out and it was overcooked. The manager did notice and ask us about it. The took care of it. Service was really great here from all (the server and managers). Mine was great but the two other people were not impressed. So, unfortunately I have to give it a 3. There was a very nice Bloody Mary bar for those interested in that. read more

Me and my girlfriend were on our way to nashville. And Roanoke was our halfway. We got a hotel and we looked for somewhere to stop and eat. We didn't want to stop at some chain and Billy's came up. Atmosphere was very nice. We made a reservation through yelp 30 in advance and we had to wait max 3 min when we got there. There was a large selection or drinks. The food was very good. The steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. A little fatty but it was a nice large portion. My girlfriend got the chicken Alfredo and I found myself stealing her food. Came here for Brunch with work friends and we sat in their little courtyard. It was nice, extremely sunny and not enough tables in shaded areas. There was plenty of seating, however only one or two areas with actual tables. My suggestion, add more tables outside and umbrellas. We had a couple fair skinned friends and I opted for the sun to save them. However, I did end up burnt LOL. All is good though. The food was good, they messed up two of our friends orders. The best part about that was they didn't' make our friends pay for their mistake. We may be back to check out your other menu items on a non brunch day. read more

I've been here many times but as management changes and such over the years I do believe it's gotten better. My most recent favorite is their pimento cheese sandwich for lunch. It was very tasty and fluffy cheese like. Service was decent. The drinks are sometimes hit or miss. read more

This place is rapidly deteriorating. Two weekends in a row. Service last week was horrible. Waiter was snarky and rude. Shrimp and grits ... grits undercooked and crunchy shrimp was over cooked and tough. Last night service was good no problem there. Server had a trainee and both did a good job. Food.... Have tried it twice now, first time for dinner and today for lunch, both times were disappointing all around. On the first trip for dinner I had the Carbonara pasta, and that's exactly what I got noodles drenched in an overly rich sauce, no cracked pepper, nor was any offered, no parsley sprinkle, not even a sprig of parsley as garnish. My wife had the jerk chicken, which was utterly devoid of flavor, it looked like they had spread a store bought jerk sauce over one side of a plain chicken breast then threw it on the grill. For lunch today I had Shrimp Taco Salad. It was flavor less greasy popcorn shrimp and not served as the menu described. Their mixed greens were mainly spinach with some romaine and iceberg thrown in, and the lime wedges never made it to my plate. My wife had the shrimp tacos which were served on dried up tortillas that I would have thrown out of my fridge a week ago. To top it all off I'm used to cutting into my three year olds chicken nuggets to make sure they are not too hot for him to eat, no problem here as they were served barely warm to the touch. Overall, bland food poorly executed, the only reason I give them two stars ratherbthan just one is because our server was friendly and attentive and my wife and son both liked the shrimp from her tacos. read more

On a recent family trip to Roanoke we decide on this place for dinner as we were just hoping to satisfy two hungry and picky children (6 and 9). We walked around downtown and really wanted to try Lebanese, Thai or BBQ, but this looked like pretty standard american food and was sparsely crowded at 6:30pm on a Saturday night. Well, it was the right decision. Service was quick and excellent. We ordered the kids' meals (pasta w/butter and cheese) with our appetizer and it arrived in less than 5 minutes. If you've ever been out to eat with hungry little kids, you can appreciate this. Our food took a little longer, just about the right amount of time (20 minutes or so), all done within an hour. I had short rib tacos and my wife had fish tacos, both were quite good and reasonably priced. Decor is just slightly upscale, but not too much, and we definitely felt fine on a weekend in shorts and t-shirts. The food is definitly pretty good, but not outstanding. Some of it is pretty expensive (steak/seafood), but the burgers and similar items are resonably priced. I would definitely recommend this place, especially with a family and if you are looking for slightly upscale, standard american fare. Pros: Excellent, quick service. Good food. Plenty of seating and nice ambience. Cons: Steak/seafood is a bit pricey and selections were very "standard". I wish I could give it 3.5, but given the service, I'll go with 4. read more

Meh. I conned two friends of mine into coming here with me. As a result, one of them said that she will never go to a new place with me unless I try it first. And then I poured my drink on her...ok, maybe not...but I wanted to. Regardless, the food was super mediocre. I was excited to see a place with prime rib on the menu. This one was underwhelming. The meat was cold as if half of my plate was sitting under the heat lamp and the other half was under an air conditioning vent. The prime rib itself was not very flavorful. I'm ok with prime rib not having seasoning so long as the meat is good...but it wasn't. The potatoes and rice that I got as sides were unremarkable. My friend (the shrew) was not pleased with her "surf and turf" dish. Her steak was cold and the salmon just did not taste very good. My other friend was satisfied with his glazed pork chop even though I found it way too sweet. We had started off with the onion curls which were pretty good...not as good as Outback's bloomin onion but I still have yet to find an onion dish as good as a bloomin onion. We also tried the mac and cheese...super runny cheese, not bad overall. However, the crostinis served with it were pretty terrible. Service was good. The place looks pretty nice and they have a crazy amount of tables in a rather large space. The place might turn into a nice place to just have a drink as the bar appears accommodating. If any of you are familiar with the Great American Chain restaurants of northern Virginia, this is basically one of those. They transplanted a Sweetwater Tavern or Artie's in Roanoke. However, I tend to think most of those restaurants are crappy. I'll give this place another try eventually. read more

This was my first time going to Billy's and I had high hopes! The five stars definitely goes directly to the food and cocktails. I had the Ultimate Burger and it was amazing. The patty was cooked to perfection and the two hardy-sized pieces of pork belly made it that much more mouth-watering. Unfortunately the kitchen messed our orders up and the appetizer was late and was brought out during the meal. This restaurant is in an old building in Roanoke. It has the feel of a classic steakhouse with substantial fixtures. The hostess said the restaurant had been in the space since 2007. The menu is not large but has a wide assortment of dishes. We got an appetizer of avocado dip with that came with tortilla chips, celery, carrots and cauliflower. The dip was very creamy and tangy. At $12, it was overpriced. I got the prime salad, which was described as prime rib with greens. I asked if you could specify the temperature of the meat, since I like it medium rare. The waiter said no, that the meat came from the end pieces and was medium. I said I didn't want dry meat and he said it wouldn't be dry. It was dry. Tiny pieces of odd tasting beef. It bore no resemblance in taste or appearance to any prime rib I've ever had. It was like cheap meat on an all-you-can-eat buffet line. There were also large gray slices of warm, soft onion in the salad. They were very unattractive. I told the waiter that I didn't like the meat and he said people either loved it or hated it. He said it was fairly new to the menu and he felt there was a problem with consistency. The salad was not large. For $14 there should be a few ounces of real prime rib rather than leftovers. Lesson learned: If one can't request how the beef is cooked, said beef is going to be brown. My husband got the pork chop, which was double thick and he said it was good. He ordered it medium, which I predicted would be dry and it did come out dry. He also got asparagus, which was fibrous at the end and sautéed vegetables, which were mushy. We were offered a free dessert which we declined and that was that. Our waiter said he was going to talk to the manager, but the manager did not talk to us. read more

Had the BLT and it was delicious. The fried green tomatoes on the sandwich were a wonderful touch on a classic. Sweet potato fries were crisp and sweet. The service was great, even though we didn't have much time to eat. The food could have arrived at the table sooner since we were the only ones in the restaurant. Everyone else in my group enjoyed the food. Overall, a bit expensive for lunch, but if you have a couple more bucks to spare, a great place to eat. read more

I attended a Holiday party at Billy's. The bartender was rude and the hostesses did not greet us when we walked in. The room we had the party in did not look like the rest of the restaurant - no table cloths or centerpieces, which is interesting given we choose this location for it ambiance. The food was just okay. The employees at Billy's were completely inflexible about many issues and it seems they didn't care whether they received our business or not. Disappointed. Mediocre/overpriced food, weird vibe from staff. This review is of dinner service. Food: Cheap. Quality. Food. -We started with the "ritzy avocado dip." Yuck. I think this was the stuff they squeeze out of the plastic tube to put on your $5 sub at Subway. Bland and overpriced. Do not order this. -I don't know what's worse--Me knowing that the dinner rolls were sister schubert's frozen bag rolls or that this place was trying to pass off sister schuberts' rolls as their own. Class up a bit and give your customers some fresh bread when they are ordering $20-$30 entrees. -The waiter advertised how Billy's was known for their steaks and seafood. I will give them that--my scallops were tasty...and the only reason this place is getting two stars as opposed to one. Regardless, the Kroger brand angel hair pasta they were served over left me thirsty hours later. For these prices, I want fresh pasta, come on. -My dad ordered the "award winning" lamb lollipops. I don't know who gave them this award because it looked like he was going to rip out his teeth getting through the tough meat. You could tell he didn't enjoy them, but didn't want to offend my mom who was paying $29 for them. Staff: -I'm not sure why the two hostesses thought it was hilarious I made an open table reservation. It was a joke between them that carried over with the waiter as he greeted us. I felt uncomfortable and unwelcome from the get-go. -I went to the bathroom and saw, what I'm guessing was the manager (youngish guy in gray suit), yelling at staff in a pretty unprofessional manner. They weren't that busy and he seemed ill-tempered and frustrated. Not something you want to display in front of your guests. Sure, the location of this place is awesome. The restaurant decor and building is cool. However, I will not be back, and do not recommend. read more

Excellent choices. Something for everyone. Oyster appetizer and crab cake app were excellent. All entrees were awesome. Our table had prime rib, mahi mahi, seafood special, and cheese tortellini. The hosted was very nice and we loved her dress. Our server was nice but he kept mixes our orders up. My sister would order something and he would bring it to me with everything to our drinks down to the A1 sauce for my steak. We look nothing alike and weren't playing musical chairs. We drove 45 mins to visit this restaurant. Crab cake appetizer was good. I ordered the steak and eggs. The eggs tasted like the military Dfac eggs they serve, the steak had no char at all. I like my steak medium rare so imagine a pale chunk of meat. Unpleasant to the eye but wasn't to bad. I just expected more from them by what the reviews said that I read. We probably should've gone around dinner service to get the good food. I wouldn't visit here again if I were lived in the area. read more

In Roanoke for a few days and decided to try Billy's for Sunday brunch. The staff is friendly, helpful and very competent. I started with the candied bacon which was cooked perfectly and was delicious. My husband and I both had omelets, he chose the build your own and I opted for crabmeat with spinach. Both were served with potatoes and biscuits. My husband is quite a proficient cook and we agreed every element of the meal was perfectly seasoned and cooked. While it may seem a bit pricey, this is a case of you get what you pay for, very good quality. read more

This evening we had the pleasure of dining at Billy's where Sarah D. took care of us. Sarah was the most outstanding model of what it means to take care of customers, caring about what she does, and making the experience special. Upon arrival Sarah was warm and inviting. She quickly learned the names of our three children. Throughout the evening Sarah would address them by name and have short conversations to ensure they were having a great time. Sarah was tentative to all of our needs, made sure our order was accurate, and timed the food service perfectly. When she realized that the children were splitting a meal she brought it on two plates and at the end of the evening when we asked for a box she took the plates and prepared it for us to take with us. She truly cared that we had a special evening. Billy's is lucky to have Sarah and because of her we will be back many more times.... By the way - the food was great also. read more

Awful Valentines Dinner with respect to service. This used to be one of our go-to restaurants in Roanoke. Nearly 1 hour to get initial round of drinks. Another 20 for a single glass of house wine later. Dinner just got delivered after a 2 hour wait. Food though was great as usual. Will be back though after speaking to manager on duty. Love the atmosphere. The 2 young ladies who greeted our group when we walked in had no smile on their face and looked like we were bothering them . They told us it would be a few min that we can go to the bar..none of us had ever been to this restaurant before so we didn't know where to go, I just thought she would have brought our group to the room she was telling us to go to. Our waiter was fabulous!!! Not sure of his name..On the shorter side with an accent. The food was good..not great. I had the crab cakes ..my friend had the tortellini .Presentation was good. We shared a cheesecake dessert that was truly horrible. who says that about cheesecake? Nothing about it had a cheesecake texture or maybe it didn't have cream cheese in it?...it was weird and a funny after taste. Wherever they order their desserts from..they need to find a different place ..or maybe make your own???? Just a suggestion. Your menu is very basic with safe easy items to make that come along with high prices . Nothing screams gourmet, this place is something different.. that would make me want to come back. read more

Our group of five longtime friends had to wait over an hour tonight after ordering to get our entrees. We arrived before 6:30 pm and Billy's was not crowded. We already had our drinks and didn't order any starters. The manager and waitress apologized after we complained, but did nothing to compensate for the unacceptable wait. My husband and I were traveling this past Friday from Northern Virginia area and we ate at Billy's. The service and food was fantastic. My husband said the crab cakes were the best he ever had eaten. My mahi mahi was excellent as well and my only complaint were the mashed potatoes were cold. I mentioned this to our server and since they were out of potatoes at Billy's they went to another eatery they own and brought me back a hot dish of potatoes within minutes. Billys Ritz has always been a standout. But that must have been in the past. Their private room for large parties overtakes their ability to service their regular tables on the main floor. Our server was pretentious - borderline arrogant. We ordered two appetizers for the table of seven. Then I had to specifically request spoons to serve them (spoons are not a utensil provided up front). Start waiting. They apologized because there was a large party of 30 and THEIR food was being delivered, but we'd be right up. Then they tried to lie their way through when our food would be delivered to us by dribbling out steak knives, wine to be served with the meal, etc. But even worse is that when the food WAS served - there was a HUGE lapse between the first plates and the last plates so the first ones to the table were COLD by the time the last entrees arrived at the table. The plate of crab cakes were good - the prime rib was undercooked - the cheese pasta plate was good - the speakeasy chicken was a contrast of flavors, they didn't seem to go together - the mahi mahi was overcooked. When it came time for dessert, we requested a dessert on one of the menus and our server said we couldn't have it - it was reserved for people who had the 4 course meal special. We complained and she went to check and we were finally served that dessert. All in all it was a very disappointing evening and took about 1-1/2 hours longer than it should have.
