The only reason why I don't give Bird Hut 5 stars is because I wish they would get a bigger place for their birds and expand their business to other areas. I've done business with them a few times and I've never gone away unhappy. I adopted two Quakers from them over the last seven years. The first one "buddy" who turned out to be a girl... was a rehome that had to be relinquished after 10 years. I had that bird for six years until it sadly passed away in an accident. The second was also a rehome who I adopted two years ago after that tragic accident. It was a bird they did not have any history on. The bird came from very bad circumstances when I took it to the vet it had suffered from a lot of social isolation that came out after I brought it home. When I called in tears asking what to do because I didn't think I could keep the bird "Samantha" talked to me with compassion and care, and I decided after talking to her I still needed to give it at least a few more months. My bird made a huge turnaround now after two years she was completely different bird that just needed the love that they entrusted me with to give her. Ceresa sold her to me and put her trust in me involving herself in the transition and because of her they even let me have her a week early. I have lived up to that trust and given my bird all the time, vet care that she has needed to recover from a previous past that was not good. I'll be going there soon to buy a bigger cage. I look forward to them seeing my Quaker April who is now renamed Gigi! thank you Bird Hut trusting me for the two rescues you let me love and take home. Took my conure in for his nail trim and wing trim and I've only went to them for almost everything for my bird and I live an hour and 10min away but I really love how they handle my bird with care I don't have to worry about anything.Super good people,family owned love the girls at the counter working today that did Stevie's nail trim and answering all my questions! I honestly couldn't recommend a better place for adopting birds! They have such a great, healthy selection of birds, and I've purchased 4 owl finches from them in the past 5 years. Had my first visit to the bird hut today. They had a large collection of birds and bird accessories. The staff was very friendly and was very helpful in making my selection. They were friendly from start to finish; from when I called them prior to making the drive to SE Portland. The staff was very patient with my decision making and let me take my time. I would highly recommend the bird hut as a local shop for your bird needs. I know some people have posted poor reviews lately due to social distancing guidelines, but this was not my experience in June of 2020. I moved to Portland in 2020 and was thrilled that there was a bird-only store here. The store has a pretty nice selection and I ended up buying a bunch of toys. They didn't carry the seed mix I use so I asked them if they could order it. The lady (owner?) just said "Never heard of it" and walked away. I was expecting maybe she'd come back with some catalogs or look up something on her computer but she moved on to other things. I got the impression that she didn't like the notion that there was something she didn't know about so just rejected my query. If it was good, she would know it right? I was shopping at Meat for Cats and Dogs (5 stars!) months later and I noticed a raw cat food that was made by the same company as my seed mix! I asked if they could order it for me and they did. I know that Bird Hut could've gotten this seed for me but they didn't even bother to try. I buy $200 a month as I have 15 birds! Regarding the birds for sale, it's because of stores like this that many states are outlawing selling of dogs, cats, and sometimes birds by pet stores. I realise that some of their birds may be rescues and may look fairly pitiful but there's no excuse for keeping birds under conditions worse than I've seen in big-box pet stores. read more

If people want birds that are respected rather than seen as merely a commodity, they might want to learn about the bird trade. I went to Bird Hut on Division after hearing they got a batch of birds wholesale, a large group of Quakers, especially. The birds are not at all comfortable with humans while priced at $550 each, as if they are tame. These are the kind of birds that end up in rescue centers. Most people don't want to spend $1100 for birds that won't interact with them. The owner is charging a price for them without offering the service it requires. This wouldn't be so bad, although bad business, if it weren't that the Quakers and future humans who live with them will not have the positive experience implied. These birds are being done a terrible disservice to remain in packed, too small cages in the hopes of getting a price they are clearly not worth. Also, his prices are crazy high for supplies. Baths are twice what I have seen elsewhere. Millet branches are more than three times what some stores downtown charge WITH MUCH HIGHER EXPENSES. Greedy. I would never step foot in this store again. read more

Bird hut is located in a funky older house with several rooms, and when you open the door to the place, you are transported to bird land. It's quite entertaining. You'll be met with larger birds (caged) when you enter who are often quite vocal and loud -- as birds will be! There are several rooms which house all kinds of birdies for sale and I believe they board birds and do wing and nail clipping as well. The room out back has lots of different kind of cages for sale and the prices are reasonable. You'll also find ample birdie toys and bird food in the place. I have found the service to be very good, and the folks there to be friendly and helpful. read more

I noticed this place while driving to another business on Division and stopped in on the way back. The first room is as far as I got because the birds in this room looked sad. Several large birds had no chest or neck feathers and were either shivering cold - which seems logical due to no feathers - or very anxious. If they're cold, then maybe warm them; if they're anxious, then maybe they ought to be in a room with less commotion. The only bird that seemed to want it's head touched was in the cage below a sign that said not to touch. This place looks like bird hell to me, can't imagine how they feel. Birds rule my life. And Bird Hut makes that a reality. I've always owned birds since I was in elementary school, in one way or another. But since I moved to PDX, my birds have come from here. Even when it comes to budgies (parakeets for y'all non-birdies) they are superior. Most are hand raised and therefore MUCH better pets than what you'd see from Petsmart/Petco. Ever. I have two cockatiels from the Bird Hut since 2007. Both are healthy, happy and...birds. One hates hands because that's her (but loves sitting on people) and the other is a gorgeous Albino who loves snuggles. It just shows that all birds have their own quirks. The Bird Hut consistently sells birds that are well bred, healthy and on top of their game species wise. Hand-fed cannot even start with how much that matters for GREAT pets. It makes the WORLD of difference. They also have great services. My oldest 'tiel hates getting her nails/wings trimmed so if I want that to happen, I take her here. The younger 'tiel is easier to manage but I take them together, but they get cut/trim and it's all good. The workers know their birds to death and know how to handle them kindly. They have parrots too - like a ton - lovebirds, parrotlets, macaws, African Greys, etc for all your parrot needs. The toy/treat selection is INSANE. I love it. I've never left without a new toy. They have millet by the bag/pound and it's larger than what you get anywhere else. And cages, treats, etc. You will not go wrong here. Basically, as a true bird lover, this place is superb. You cannot go wrong here. I recommend times a ton. read more

Here's the thing: These folks obviously love birds and know their stuff. Their selection of both birds and supplies are amazing and it's really nice to support an independent shop over, say, Petsmart. That said, I got a Gloster canary from them that developed feather cysts on its first molt (within a month of coming home with me) and also had glaucoma/ was nearly blind. He was 3 and ultimately I surrendered him to the Avian Medical Center so he'd have any hope of getting the ongoing care he needed ("He's a genetic mess" were their exact words). I then got another canary and he too got insanely sick within a month or two. I did everything I possibly could (including a 4 night emergency stay at the avian vet in an incubator) but he ultimately died within a month of that. I'm happy that Bird Hut exists and again, they're obviously a great resource. But after my two experiences, I have to question the quality of the breeder they're getting their canaries from. For reference: I've had multiple canaries live for 10+ years and have never run into such extreme medical issues within the first 60-90 days. Check in with your breeder, Bird Hut! read more

I am extremely happy I came to Bird Hut! I had been searching for a cockatiel for a long time and kept visiting a different bird shop in Vancouver, but the ladies there always seemed aloof and like I was bothering them if I had a question or wanted help. I decided to try Bird Hut instead, hoping for a better experience. Not long after I walked in, Christen asked if I needed anything. I was taken aback at how attentive and friendly she was, compared to my other experiences at bird shops! She was also helping another customer before me (since the other customer arrived first so that's 100% fair), but Christen never forgot about me and came back as soon as she could to assist me. She didn't hesitate to let me hold the bird I was interested in and she answered all of my questions. She even helped me pick out perches and made sure I had everything I needed for a cockatiel. I could tell she knows her stuff when it comes to birds. I came home with the exact cockatiel I wanted and I am so happy! He's super healthy and I'm even having him 'step up' on the 3rd day. :) If you need help, Christen really knows her stuff and she is lovely to deal with! By the way, I don't understand why anyone would say that this place is 'dirty'. It's an old building AND it has a lot of birds. All it takes is 1 bird to make a place dusty and chewed up, but I personally didn't see any dirt or dust. This is just what a place, full of destructive and messy birds, looks like. The birds all looked happy and the ones who had plucked themselves obviously came from other homes. Almost all bird shops have 'second-chance' birds that have plucked themselves. I find it respectable that the majority of the large parrots at Bird Hut are second-chance birds and not from breeders, because there are so many large parrots who need homes. ***Given the situation we're all currently in, I wouldn't normally leave a bad review for a business, but I don't want anyone else to make the same mistake we just did*** My boyfriend has wanted a bird for as long as I've known him. When the pandemic hit and we both got laid off, we decided it would be the perfect time to finally adopt one, since we're home all day and can give it a lot of attention and training. He called Bird Hut earlier in the week to see if they were still doing adoptions. They said yes, so we stopped by this morning to take a look. The whole experience was a disaster. An employee answered the door and demanded to know what we wanted. That kinda took our breath away. What did she think we wanted? To rob the place? We told her we were interested in getting a bird, and she reluctantly let us in. At that point we knew we'd made a mistake, but it was too late. We were already there with cash in hand, and my boyfriend was really excited about his new feathered friend. He'd set up the cage, made chop, bought toys, the whole shebang. He was ready. The problem is, adopting a parrot is a serious decision. They're delicate, expensive animals that closely bond with their owners. You don't just pick one out at random and take it home. At the moment, Bird Hut is only letting in two customers at a time, and they want you to HUSTLE. Within fifteen minutes they expected us to choose which $200 - $500 bird we wanted to commit to taking care of for 20+ years, and when we were unable to do so, they kicked us out. [Side note: we also noticed the quality of their stock is very uneven. We were initially interested in parrotlets, but they seemed to be in poor condition and were clearly terrified of humans. After being advertised as hand-fed and tame, we found that sketchy as hell. The cockatiels were much better, and we nearly bought one, but the owner decided he simply didn't have time to make the sale.] I don't know what other people are up to, but we didn't break quarantine and put our health at risk so we could hang out in a pet shop for fun and leave empty-handed. We're very disappointed in the lack of respect both we and the birds were shown. I told the salesperson it was unethical to purchase a pet on impulse, and she agreed. The owner, apparently, didn't. Pandemic or not, there's really no excuse for that. So if anyone reading this is considering bird adoption during the statewide stay-at-home order, I recommend checking Craigslist or trying to get in touch with a breeder directly. Bird Hut made us feel dirty and paranoid, and I wish we'd never gone there. One thing is obvious: they should NOT be open right now. read more

I had such a great experience at Bird hut. I purchased a baby quaker parrot from them that was hand raised. I got to visit him a couple times before I took him home and the even DNA tested him for me so I knew it was a boy. They helped me with what type of food he would like and I could buy it there. We also picked out toys and other goodies. I've been back a few times since and the birds always seem healthy and the rooms are kept up pretty clean seeing how messy birds are! I was just back again and bought a nice size cage on a stand and a gorgeous piece of coffee wood as a perch. I will continue to come back and I do recommend this place to my friends! read more

I bought 2 birds, they were sick when I bought them and they died. Birdhut does not have any guarantees on their birds. If you go in to birdhut you will see bird poop in the water bowls which causes bacteria and therefore infects the birds. Als bird seed is left in bowls, which is not supposed to be done as it creates bacteria from the food sitting. Birds are supposed to be fed the amount recommended, then the bowls cleaned. I had assumed since they are a bird establishment that they would know how to correctly care for these animals, However it is not so. I would strongly recommend purchasing from a clean establishment. read more

Bird Hut is wonderful, as soon as you walk in, you hear the sounds of many tropical parrots, so earplugs might be a good idea. Otherwise, it's definitely an experience. Went to find my zebra finch a friend today, I was so sad to see the condition of these birds at The Bird Hut. Most of the zebra finches had such swollen feet they couldn't stand on the perch, and yet they were not separated from the rest of the flock. One couldn't even fly and it really made me sad to see him having to live a life like that and the employees not doing a thing to help them. The one employee that was there wouldn't give us eye contact, smelled like cigarettes so bad, didn't even ask us if we wanted help when we clearly were interested in taking a bird home. I got really lucky last year to get a healthy finch from there but they have gone downhill in the past year. read more

I love what they are trying to do for birds here. I spend a good amount of time there in the past to have my conures nails trimmed and pick up goodies. It's a family adventure when we go. We love meeting new birds that come in. The employees keep busy. Attending to cages, trimming nails, rotating play time in the playroom, or helping customers at the desk as they should be. If I need help, I ask. They are quick to find a stopping point or find another employee that's free. I've never felt like the employees were rude or made me wait as others have said. The building definitely wasn't made for this application, but they seem to make do with what they have and their birds seem much happier and better cared for then the ones held hostage at my local pet store. read more

My son has been wanting a budge for years. He's had a terrible year and has been very sad and depressed, so when my mom came to visit she wanted to get him his bird. We wanted the very best for him so we didn't go to petco and went to bird hut. The lady was thrilled to sell us nearly 200$ worth of cage, toys, food, treats and a $50 budgie. Well, he died suddenly about a week and a half later, DEVASTATING to my son. I figured bird hut would want to know if one of their birds dropped dead not even two weeks after buying it. I mean, it could be a disease! So I wrapped him up and took him there with me assuming she'd want to look him over. WRONG when I went in she was a totally different person than she was when I bought things from her. She was rude, cold and downright cruel and just said "birds die!" Ummmm...I'm thinking if you're a bird lover who sells birds, you want to know why a bird you just sold died! I drove 2+ hours (one way) to purchase a bird from bird hut. When I got there I tried to ask the clerk (long dark hair, thin, middle aged woman) a simple question and received an extremely rude brush off remark as an answer. She then ignored me the whole time I was there and refused to acknowledge my existence. Aside from the absolute horrible customer service, the lady wasn't nearly knowledgeable enough to be keeping so many birds. They are in dirty, overcrowded cages, some look to be sick (beware of buying any birds or supplies from this store if you have birds already) This store is no more than a hoarder's nest and should be avoided when looking for a new companion bird. My firsthand customer experience has led me to conclude that Bird Hut cares about profit, not parrots. I've visited the store numerous times, and many sales persons have confirmed that they buy captive-bred parrots, and sell them for the pet trade. On one visit, when I asked the store clerk to disclose where they purchased their birds (to make sure they weren't from a "bird mill"), he flat out refused; only stating that the birds primarily came from "local breeders," ... but also admitting that they fly baby birds in from other states like California, and Florida. When I asked which breeders (local or out of state) he bought from, he gave a lame excuse about protecting "breeder privacy." There are no laws that prohibit a pet store from disclosing where a pet store gets its parrots here in OR, so this is obviously a silly, self-preserving response. When I asked whether or not he cared about the potentially horrid conditions of the breeder-birds used to supply his store with babies he said, "This is a business, not a rescue." Please, do not shop here if you care about parrots. read more

The poor birds seemed to be in very bad condition. Many of them were bald from I assume picking their feathers out. Many of them were shaking and seemed very depressed even with cage mates. We are very happy we decided to visit Bird Hut on our trip to Oregon. We walked in to many beautiful birds, including being greeted by a fine macaw named Mariah, looking for her forever home. The employee was busy but extremely helpful. She was happy to answer questions and allowed us time to visit all the birds. We found finches and budgies to macaws and cockatoos. Due to the Thanksgiving holiday they were boarding many birds. All birds were labeled with signs that included their names, species, if they were for sale, sold, on hold, layaway or being boarded. The signs also included any quirks or additional information that was important. Such as: Sam, a store bird, being blind in her left eye or Greta does NOT like her precious bell being touched. They also have a room where they suspend orb perches from the ceiling and allow birds time out of their cages to play on the orbs. We visited several times over the weekend carefully observing the birds. All the employees we met and talked to were very helpful and we saw them bring out many different birds to play on the orbs every time we were in there. They did have larger birds on consignment/to be re-homed. The employees seemed to care about all the birds and finding good homes for each of them, particularly the large birds who tend to have greater chances of needing to be re-homed at a later date. We decided on a shy 1 year old Galah (Rose Breasted Cockatoo) who "doesn't like hands" according to their sign, put down a down payment for layway and said we would be back in 30 days. When we arrived back they were so excited to show us our little galah was now stepping up. They also learned "what'cha doin'?" from another galah Bird Hut was boarding and let them spend time socializing with. I was very pleased Bird Hut employees spent the effort to socialize our galah even though they were "sold". Our galah has been a wonderful addition to our family. They spend most of their day on the orb perch we were able to purchase that the owner hand built for us (and he even was able to do it while caring for hatchlings). They've only been home 3 weeks and has since learned 4 new words, including their name and they also laugh now, but their favorite phrase is still "what'cha doin'?" The avian vet said their feathers looked real good and they appear to be in good health. The service we received from Bird Hut was excellent. They had a wide selection of bird enrichment toys, foods, perches and cages. We look forward to acquiring our next family member from them. read more
