We are very happy we decided to visit Bird Hut on our trip to Oregon. We walked in to many beautiful birds, including being greeted by a fine macaw named Mariah, looking for her forever home. The employee was busy but extremely helpful. She was happy to answer questions and allowed us time to visit all the birds. We found finches and budgies to macaws and cockatoos. Due to the Thanksgiving holiday they were boarding many birds. All birds were labeled with signs that included their names, species, if they were for sale, sold, on hold, layaway or being boarded. The signs also included any quirks or additional information that was important. Such as: Sam, a store bird, being blind in her left eye or Greta does NOT like her precious bell being touched. They also have a room where they suspend orb perches from the ceiling and allow birds time out of their cages to play on the orbs. We visited several times over the weekend carefully observing the birds. All the employees we met and talked to were very helpful and we saw them bring out many different birds to play on the orbs every time we were in there. They did have larger birds on consignment/to be re-homed. The employees seemed to care about all the birds and finding good homes for each of them, particularly the large birds who tend to have greater chances of needing to be re-homed at a later date. We decided on a shy 1 year old Galah (Rose Breasted Cockatoo) who "doesn't like hands" according to their sign, put down a down payment for layway and said we would be back in 30 days. When we arrived back they were so excited to show us our little galah was now stepping up. They also learned "what'cha doin'?" from another galah Bird Hut was boarding and let them spend time socializing with. I was very pleased Bird Hut employees spent the effort to socialize our galah even though they were "sold". Our galah has been a wonderful addition to our family. They spend most of their day on the orb perch we were able to purchase that the owner hand built for us (and he even was able to do it while caring for hatchlings). They've only been home 3 weeks and has since learned 4 new words, including their name and they also laugh now, but their favorite phrase is still "what'cha doin'?" The avian vet said their feathers looked real good and they appear to be in good health. The service we received from Bird Hut was excellent. They had a wide selection of bird enrichment toys, foods, perches and cages. We look forward to acquiring our next family member from them. read more

While I am cognizant of the fact that business's that are still open may have reduced their hours, I was unprepared for my unsuccessful visit to the Bird Hut on SE Division. I am 83 years old, with heart problems and blood cancer, but I still have to care for my Macaw, Cockatoo, and Cockatiels. I try to make one outing do for several errands, as I tire easily and stay home most of the time. On Tuesday I had to go to the hospital for blood and since it is near Bird Hut and I needed pellets I stopped to see if they were open. As I pulled up, the door opened and someone came out, so I parked, and went inside. The clerk took no notice until I said "good morning", whereupon she said "we're closed". Abruptly and succinctly. She then turned away. There was nothing for me to say, so I left, went home and ordered $213.57 worth of bird food and toys from Amazon. read more

The Bird Hut has a great staff. They are very friendly and knowledgeable. I spent several hours every week for at least 3 months up there waiting for my baby quacker to be weaned ! I got to know Brian and his staff. I had to hold back tears when I brought my baby home because I knew that I would only be seeing them periodically from that point on!! While waiting to bring Clover home, we bought 2 more birds lol. I will not go or recommend any other place other than The Bird Hut! read more

I go here all the time. Sometimes the workers are rude but lately the others are much nicer. Took my white face cockatiel Zanzibar here to get his wings cut,for $2. After about 30 seconds,they were done and put him in his carrier. Unfortunatly,he darted for the opening and one of the workers pressed down slightly. Luckily she lifted it and he was fine,starteld but fine. I could tell she celt guilty,a sign of a good animal lover,and I reassured her he was fine and tough. Love this place. They have everything bird. And I love everything bird. Great selection of toys, food, cages, supplies, oh yeah and birds. Everyone looks healthy and happy. I could spend hours here. I am a crazy bird person though. The place is a little old and dated but kept VERY CLEAN. This will be my one stop shop for my bird needs. I want to give them a five star rating. But I think there are some changes that would make this place 5 star. I am not a small person, so the very narrow aisles are difficult to navigate. I think they could update there cage setup as well. I'm bit torn when it comes to the bird hut. I completely respect them for the establishment they have created. I am in full support of the kind of store/sanctuary they are trying to be. They know what they are talking about and they don't just give their birds to anyone. I work at petsmart and the one thing that destroys me the most is having parents or Ignorant people who don't do any research but insist they can just buy a bird for $20 and think they don't need the things they really need to help their animals live a long and happy life. The worst is having people completely ignore the information you try to give them and not have the authority to deny sale. To have people putting information out there that is actually correct and not just pretending to know what they're talking about and telling people false information about bird care is a hard thing to come by unfortunately. As much as i appreciate the intentions of the store and its workers I have to admit, the store is pretty gross. And don't get me wrong I completely understand why it is that way, I mean hello birds are birds and having that many of them in a small house isn't going to make the store neat and clean. And not having the money like giant corporate stores like petsmart and Petco is going to make things extremely difficult to update the stores appearance, making it a comfortable experience for customers while continuously taking care of the birds. To completely renew the store they would probably have to relocate all the birds to who knows where because where the hell are they gonna put them. I wish they had a better location and a bigger building. And I really wish they had the gift of hardwood floors or tile rather than the carpet because birds and carpet is not a good mix. But the only way things like that are gonna happen is if the store gets more support from the community and other bird lovers. You guys there really make an amazing difference for pet parents and the lives of these beautiful animals. The products and the knowledge that they provide are what makes the store so special. I guess for people who come in for the atmosphere that's based on the cleanliness don't be surprised when it's not as appealing as you would want it to be. But with more support and understanding the situation they can probably be able to do more about these issues. I want this post to be more positive than negative. Was my customer experience as good as it could have, no. But just by observing the way of some of the employees work I can tell you it's a good place and they deserve tons of support. I have always appreciated these beautiful creatures and what was once a hobby has become a mission.. a rescue mission to find and rehabilitate Birds that ignorant humans have all but destroyed. Bird Hut has been quite helpful to me over the last few years by helping me find a good home for a bird I couldn't take with me because of stupid California laws. Let's get this straight from the start...we inherited an Amazon parrot & the bird hates everyone except my husband. While this may seem okay, it's not. I am the one who changes the cage, feeds 'Papageno', gets fresh water, toys, and basically tries to have something other than a dysfunctional relationship with my green feathered house guest from hell. We had our system down in Berkeley, but in Portland, it's a new game. After numerous stops at a variety of pet stores, I was referred to Bird Hut & despite the long haul out there, they have what we needed & the bird likes. Note to other shops selling parrot food: Amazons shouldn't have sunflower seeds. If offered a mix, they will only eat the sunflower seeds & they get especially nasty (or nastier than usual). Claudia, at Your Basic Bird in Berkeley, explained why they shouldn't eat this & how it negatively affects their digestion & elimination systems...perhaps too much information, but, the point is, have some variety if you're going to sell the stuff, or don't offer it at all, please. Back to Bird Hut...it's weird. It looks like a bad tract house in the suburbs & gave me the creeps the first time...like the place is a cover for something else (like what, I don't know). Once inside, the place is set up like a tract house: bigger birds in what looks like a living room, smaller birds in what could be back bedrooms...you get the idea. The salesperson was not especially warm or welcoming, but she got the job done. Because they had what I was searching for & due to the humorous nature of some of the resident birds (like the one positioned near the front door who yells, "Fire!! Let me out!! Arriba! Arriba!!", I'm giving 4 stars. I think there's too many birds in there, & who knows how they are procured, or where from?? The place has been in business for 30 years, so it seems as tho' that counts for something. Meanwhile, Papageno is eating away, swearing up a storm, & continuing to glower at me. Dysfunctional relationship aside, I don't want anything to happen to this bird. Call me co-dependent, but if it's this hard to find chow in this town for a parrot, I am not taking any chances on trying to find a vet who specializes in 'exotics'... read more

I've been to this place about 4 times. I even adopted a beautiful nunday conure that I absolutely adore, unfortunately every time I've gone I've encountered the same lady and she is always so rude and a bit disrespectful. I understand being protective of birds but don't be so rude to your costumers. I hope her bad attitude is only towards customers (even though I would rather she learn to be a little more approachable) and not the birds she works with. The 2 star rating is because I don't like being attacked for wanting what's best for my babies. I have been going to the Bird Hut for the past 3 years. We have purchased two birds, a Green Cheek Conure (2008) and a Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo (2010). Diane, Brian, and Kim are a God-send when coaching on raising the birds. They have a great supply of toys, food, and cages. The birds are let out of their cages for play time in the recreation room every single day. They take great care and show love for all of the birds. I am proud to have come to know the crew at the Bird Hut and I've referred many of my friends their way. I love supporting small local business as I own one myself. I do not know how to feel about this place. They are bird crazy, good and bad. I like how they trim my birds nails and I buy food there. I will say last time I grabbed a bag of food and the employee said,"oh not that one, it's terrible." Why the hell are you selling it then? The bigest selection of pet birds in Portland. They have been doing more in the large and medium hard bills and less of the smaller softbills. Sometimes they too busy to spend the time with you to learn about the bird - especially on a weekend. Can be an issue if you don't know about large birds. I love this place. I have an old cockatiel and two parakeets. I buy all my supplies from the Bird Hut: seed, treats, toys, cuttlebones, etc. The birds here are very well cared for. The larger birds get time out of their cages every day. The cages are always being cleaned when I'm there. I've never seen any sick or stressed out birds; they all have a variety of food and plenty of toys in each cage. I visited the Bird Hut four or five times to check on the birds before I started doing business with them and was impressed. I brought my old cockatiel in to have his nails clipped and they were very good with him (and good natured when he decided to fly around lobby). Cages are sold at excellent prices, too. read more

This is a nice clean well stocked bird store. The help is helpful and knowledgeable. I have never seen so many bird toys in one place! They take good care of the seed they sell, it is kept covered and dry. The resident birds are great too and many will greet you when you enter and leave. read more

We have been customers of The Bird Hut for years now and love them!. We have an African Grey parrot and have purchased a Quaker parrot and a eclectus parrot from this store. We have availed ourselves of so many of their product and services: food, toys, trimming and boarding. We have always had exceptional service and wonderful interactions from their kind and knowledgeable staff. I came to the store today to visit a bird my fiance bought for me. The owner is a total a**hole and treats people horribly. While I was there I witnessed him yell at his employee, then he proceeded to yell at me. He talked to me like I was an idiot. I asked him what his problem was and he got extremely belligerent telling me to give him HIS bird back even though I have already dropped a deposit. I told him if its HIS bird then I should get my money back, at which point he exclaimed there are no refunds. Other people on this site have also expressed how awful the owner is. And by the way the "hand tame" bird bit me the entire time. Beware. read more

I have read the bad reviews. I have never had bad customer service. We have made multiple purchases of toys, food, & a traveling cage. I LOVE THIS PLACE! I have worked with rescue birds for over 25 years and this is a great place for supplies and birds. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. The birds are well taken care of and clean. The reviews of negative comments are from people who have NO IDEA what it takes to care for birds. I have birds from Blue Hyacinths macaws, Quakers, and Moluccan Cockatoos, I've had them for years. Birds are not for everyone, yes they are pretty but they are HARD work. If the staff at the Bird Hut refuse to sell a bird it's because they are being RESPONSIBLE. For that alone I will continue to shop there and support them. The prices at the Bird Hut are actually cheaper and better quality than Petco and Petsmart. I've purchased a large bird stand from them and food. They also trimmed my feathered babies little toes and even dealt with my super cranky Blue and Gold Macaw. If you are looking for anything Bird related I would recommend that you get it from here. Since moving to the Portland area, we have been searching for a good bird store to get food and toys for our amazon parrot. This place was a bit of a drive, but I decided to give it a try. I will say, where we used to live, the bird store we went to was in a newer shopping center, this place was an older converted home. Kind of made me a tad leery when I first pulled up. However, the moment I walked in, you could tell it was a well maintained store. Despite having a whole bunch of birds for sale and 'tight' quarters, it was surprisingly neat and clean. The numerous birds appeared well cared for, had toys, hiding huts, varied perches ext... in their cages instead of your typical 'bare bone' pet store setups, and I liked that they had some older birds in need of good homes instead of all babies. Names, ages and price was clearly posted on each birds cage. I happened to be there as the lady was rotating their birds, which apparently all get to come out for a while each day and hang out in a large hanging gym area in the center of the store. She was very patient and gentle with them. I am not personally interested in a second bird, but you can tell a lot about a pet store by the way they care for the animals they sell and this place takes good care of their birds. Their food selection was what I really went down there for, and it was worth the drive. My bird likes cooked foods, and they had numerous brands in numerous 'flavors'. I actually had a tough time deciding! The lady was helpful I answering questions about the different brands and varieties. They did have a big selection of toys, unfortunately not any to speak of that are the kind my picky bird plays with. My bird tends to like the brightly colored acrylic toys, whereas they had a lot of the wood block and shredding toys. Overall, it is a nice store and they've won my business. I have taken my cockatiel Rickie here for years to get her talons and wings trimmed - $5 for both! The people are very nice and treat my bird kindly. I don't know if there are "too many birds" here, but they all seem quite content. There are always larger birds out of their cages, playing on large perches in the product display area. The operators insist you use hand cleaner before touching any birds. I believe they raise chicks in the back buildings. Personally, I think the birds are happier in the presence of many birds -- they are social animals! read more

I used to love this place, when the wife was still alive, she was so helpful, and that store was always clean!_ since she passed away, the store is dirty, as are the cages, it even smells dirty! I will never take my bird in there ever again!! Also the workers are rude, if you ask them for something, they act very put out! I live way out in Clackamas and needing to get my African Greys nails trimmed there is no place around so I travel to the Bird Hut $5 for a nail trim, and the people at the store are very nice and knowledgeable. I was there well over an hour and they were very helpful and the cages are great and very well priced, Alex and I would highly recommend!!! read more

Today on 03/26/2015 Around 2:00pm I had the worst experience ever at this store! I came in very excited in getting a parrot then left crying:( Right when I came in the store, One of the workers I don't know her name.... dark hair, skinny was so RUDE! Her attitude was HORRID!! I was about to purchase a Jayday Conure 450$ with big cage almost 300$ Also toys, food and carrier. After all her rude attitude and mean talking back when I just asked simple questions she said " you know what I don't think you have enough experience we are not going to sell you this bird" What!? How does she know I don't have experience? I've had birds in the past! Maybe not parrots but parakeets Yes! and I Love Birds! I've been at this store many times in search of the parrot I want, talked to owner and my husband plays with the macaws all the time we come in. After all her rude remarks, Finally Then my husband at the end got upset and said we do not need to get this bird anymore. I wish this employee gets fired she was being rude to the other younger employee also. The other younger employee was so sweet and nice. Also she was making me buy all these accessories only there. She got even more Mean when I simply said I would like to purchase these things somewhere else. Stay away from this place it will ruin your exciting day in buying a new parrot baby. Worst Pet Bird Store Ever. I've lived in Portland for over a decade and each time I've visited this store curious to see if the conditions have changed, I'm sad to say they haven't. The prices are not at all competitive, over double sometimes triple what other nicer stores price them at. The only good price is bulk seed but even that is NOT safe for your birds as it is often returned and reused, is kept on the floor of a shed (yes i have witnessed them pulling it off the floor myself) and they use it on their store birds and then sell the leftovers to customers yucky! the conditions of the cages are typically fine but i have seen mold in the smallest of bird rooms on numerous occasions, and the owner seems to always be in a crabby mood making me feel as though I was inconveniencing him with each inquiry. They have NO respect for their customers I have heard them having terrible conversations about their own staff and customers and was pissed! They dont give a rip about their customers, treated my bird terribly two years back when i gave them a go to groom my amazon parrot, made several nails bleed and no one seemed capable of keeping her held properly sending her flying under their counters and almost into several traps for mice. They have a huge infestation problem walls chewed all over the place and the whole thing stink like mice feces and urine. They do not treat their birds for any diseases and I have commented on the infestation of mites in their birds for years but they dont seem to care on bit as long as they are making a buck which is really sad as they let the little guys suffer with broken limbs or injuries untreated hidden behind the counter. Dont even think about buying nuts here holy cow what a rip! A pet shopper can certainly do better than this stinky run down business. ADOPT DONT SHOP! This place is truly a sad sorry business and such a terrible place for a bird to have to sit in for years so they can make a buck, birds with serious behavioral issues and the like being sold for profit when what they really need is a qualified rescue to step up and help them out.
