We arrived and parked in a gravel lot nearby. We had reservations for 7:30. We walked right by the unmarked door to the to-go window. They directed us to the restaurant entrance. We checked in and the hostess told us our table was being cleared and we would be seated shortly. It is cozy and a bit tight inside so we stood outside. We were not seated shortly. We checked back in at the thirty minute mark and were once again told they were clearing a table for us. Nothing happened. About 15 minutes later we went inside and waited in front of the hostess stand. We were seated shortly after. Our server was fantastic. She was friendly and accommodating and made suggestions. Yes, it lives up to the hype. For dining in, Check in at the unmarked door behind closed curtains, where the host will take your information and call or text when your table is ready. The atmosphere feels very Manhattan, New York--moody R&B with the bass turned up, soft dim lighting, and intimate curtained spaces create a cozy vibe. And then there's the kale salad. After hearing all the hype, I decided my curiosity was worth risking my lactose intolerance. No regrets. In fact, if I ever had to choose a death row meal, this salad would be on the menu. It's crunchy, toasty, creamy, and brightened with just the right hint of lemon. It's an absolute must-order. Who knew the toughest reservation to get in CLT would be at a small pizza joint??!! It took a little creativity to score a reservation, and even then it was still a couple months out... but we finally made it to Bird this week. Recognized by The New York Times as one of the best pizza spots in the U.S., the hype is definitely real... even if we're still debating whether it was two-months-in-advance real LOL. It is a small cute spot inside, NYC style. Some people don't like sitting so close to other customers, but I enjoy small intimate restaurants. As for the food - pizza was delish (love that they have beef pepperoni), but the viral kale Ceasar and buttermilk ice cream on the olive oil cake stole the show. I will say review that bill well once it arrives. We saw we were overcharged for drinks, our waitress put the tab of our next door table on ours. We did go back inside before leaving to get it straightened out, and they were nice about it. Service is good but a little slow when it came to getting things like extra napkins, drinks, etc.....and I could tell some waitresses were a bit more attentive to their tables vs. others. It was a 5 for me--excellent flavors, limited specialty menu, FRESH Parmesan, great crust. A 4 for my husband who wanted a tad bit thicker crust, and a 3.5 from our 16 year old who said hers was a tad too greasy and she wanted more nonalcoholic drink options beyond sparkling water and Coke. Party of 4 to Bird Pizza. We made the reservation back in February so we were excited to go. This was my and my niece's second visit but first for my boys. Reservation was a 5:30. The line outside was already pretty long when we arrived. Most of the people on line were walk-ins. Not sure how many got in as Bird Pizza is very popular. The restaurant is small but they have a full service bar. If you are alone you could sit at the bar and eat. The Kale Caesar was huge and amazing and the pizza was excellent. Tried Bird Pizzeria for the first time and it absolutely lived up to the hype. It's officially in my top three pizza spots in Charlotte. We had reservations on a Friday night which was the right call -- it was busy but never overwhelming, and the low lighting and music kept the atmosphere exactly where it should be. I got a little confused with the hours and arrived at 4:30, realizing the dine-in restaurant doesn't open until 5:30 (only the To-Go opens at 4). I waited in the car and got in line first at 5:15. Once they opened 15 minutes later, the host seated us almost immediately. It's a small spot but has a very 'date night' vibe. We ordered the Kale Caesar, of course. Okay, the pizza slaps. Yes it's hard to get a reservation. Go to the window, scan the QR code to order a pizza online, wait about an hour (go walk to optimist or Rosie's Wine Garden), but it's worth it. And it finally works out where my husband and I were out early and ended up there right as it opened. They now allow walk-ins however if you eat inside the restaurant you cannot make many changes to the food menu. If you would like to order custom pizzas you have to do so outside at the window. They do have outdoor seating with umbrellas for customers. The service was great I do believe my waitresses name was toffee. But then when you think to go, it's like CFA on Sunday, they're closed. My homegirl wanted to take me out for my birthday, & to my surprise she wanted to take me here. We got there at 5:15, for their 5:30 opening. We weren't alone! There was probably 20+ in line. We got on the waitlist, which was 2.5 hours. The text service was helpful, as we went across to Optimist Hall to have a drink. 2 hours & 20 minutes later we got the text that they were ready for us. The inside is so cozy & the playlist was ! I read the FAQ sheet on the website before arriving, so I knew to get there early and that parties can't be larger than 3 to be seated without a reservation. We arrived about 4:50 and they opened exactly at 5:30 as stated. They called for reservations first. Then, proceeded with the rest of the line. We were ushered on the restaurant and seated within 5 mins of them opening. We were seated and the bar and served by Nkem who is actually one of the owners. She was really really nice and she shared a little about how the business got started and how they expanded to having a dining room. I ordered a whiskey sour that was really good and the Grandad pizza! Listen the drink delivered a nice punch and the pizza was full of flavor in every bite. The toppings were generous and just flavorful. The pizza definitely lived up to all of the hype that I've seen. The restaurant is what I'd consider a small intimate setting. If you're considering dining inside, plan accordingly, get there early and be prepared to enjoy a yummy pizza pie. Waited months for this reservation... so had high expectations that unfortunately were not met. This is what people are talking about with the rave reviews. It's a crispy thin crust with yummy mozzarella and a tasty sauce. The problem we had with the service was that the cocktail menu listed every cocktail as $12 but on our final bill the whiskey sour came out to $16. After asking our server about it the bartender came over and stated there was an up charge for a more top shelf liquor, which was not communicated. She refused to make it right on our bill stating "no one else has ever complained before". Lines formed, wait times stretched, and hype levels went through the roof. I intentionally waited for all of that to die down before finally stopping by. I ordered the Plain Pie (tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and basil) because that's the only fair way to judge a pizza shop. No distractions, no gimmicks, and the result? Absolutely worth the hype. The crust has that perfect balance of chew and char, the sauce is bright without being acidic, the mozzarella is applied with confidence, and every bite feels deliciously intentional. Update. 12/12 So while back in charlotte I decided to give them another shot. This time I went with a white pizza. White sauce base, mushrooms, pork blend sausage. I ordered from the QR code at the window and. Nine else was outside. I was there at 4pm When they open and it took about 25 mins to get the pizza. Which personally felt like a rather long time. Anyway I get the pizza and immediately open it to get the best possible experience from a fresh pie. Just like last time the dough and crust are solid. The pizza again is very VERY under seasoned. Which is strange how the manage to make all the ingredients so bland and add zero seasoning. I had to again go to the window and ask for a side of salt to try and wake the pizza up and make it halfway decent. Out of 2 adults and 2 kids we didn't even eat half the pie. Idk where the high praise comes from but after 2 visits I find the pizza very bland and unremarkable. And with that I have to lower it from 3 stars to 2 stars.
