A fun little sandwich coffee bar. I came during the day for a late lunch and had a chicken sandwich and iced coconut matcha slush. The bread I think was a bit chewy and my mouth got a bit tired from chewing, but the sauce and the chicken combined with all the fresh veggies, it was amazing. I was told at night it becomes a wine bar. I would definitely want to come back to try their wine bar ! read more

Ordered a barley bowl to go and added turkey and avocado for lunch during work. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good this was! The pickled onions and carrots were a great addition, and everything in the bowl really added to the flavour. I especially loved the roasted broccoli and the sweet potatoes. The cafe has a nice vibe. The space extends further back and the backdoor appears to go into another street. Just from a preliminary glance the restaurant could seat approximately 50 people or so. The restaurant staff were nice and helpful. They actually forgot to give my friend an avocado as a part of his order, but that was able to be remedied quite easily. I would say this could be great spot for you, if you enjoy healthy options and decent coffee (I say this as someone who is not a coffee snob). I had a breakfast sandwich that I thought was fine, but not necessarily something I'd come back again just to get. Overall, a nice spot for a small get-together with friends if you're health conscious and like a nice intimate space. The main reason for the three star is the food. I find the food menu limited and uninspiring here. Most items are very bread and carb heavy. There is no chai latte or London fog. The little stools had no place for me to hang my coat so I had to sit on my coat the whole time which was uncomfortable. I'm sure some people like the vibe, but it's just not for me. read more

This is a very quaint place. It has two entrances: one on Powell St and one on Alexander St. The main counter is by the Powell St entrance. The options for food is limited if it didn't have a few breakfast items. I got the avocado with poached egg on toast. A nice little item to start the day. There is a good amount of avocado and the poached egg was done perfectly. The sandwiches look good too. Previously had the pork sandwich. You can tell they try to serve the best and the ingredients are fresh. They have some baked items too but I haven't tried those yet. I'll try some the next time I am here. The atmosphere is relaxed as there is some music in the background, people are sitting with their books, laptop and/or chatting up with their friends. if you're in the neighborhood, I recommend coming in and grabbing a light meal and drink. read more

I'm really loving Gastown these days. Places like Birds and the Beets make me love it even more. The place is surprisingly spacious than it looks from the outside. Came in early one morning and it was not too busy, several people reading and enjoying their coffee. Fresh baked goods fill the air, and friendly faces behind the counter ready to help. I ordered a latte and a freshly baked cinnamon bun. The latte was great and cinnamon bun was delish! I love the the fresh flowers in the front, I believe you can purchase them. The beverages were also pretty solid. They call your name when the order is ready. Remember to collect utensils and napkins before headed back to the table. It's a self-serving place mostly. Giving this place a 3.5 Love this little spot in Gastown! Came here on a rainy mid-week morning, it was warm and cosy with lots of places to sit. I had the miso barley bowl with a ramen egg, it was delicious and savoury, not to mention healthy! I was told by the girl behind the counter it was "a cult classic". My friend got the breakfast sandwich - which to be honest looked a bit dry. I don't drink coffee so I had the black tea misto with almond milk, it was good except they didn't leave the tea bag in. Only giving it a 3.5 because there were a few little things that I didn't prefer: 1) they don't have menus so you have to read the chalk boards behind the counter 2) no table service for the food - the cafe is a long rectangle shape so you end up going to your seat back and forth to the counter to get your food 3) it's cosy but also a bit pokey with the lay out, as they have a small bakery section where they make their own sourdough and small baked goods, I was there when it was quiet and there were already roasting and baking trays stacked real close to the walkway - can only imagine how it would be on a busy weekend 4) the staff were not un-friendly but gave off a bit "too cool" vibe 5) the baked goods at the counter looked a bit old and dry even though they were probably made in house Otherwise, I'd def come again - but probably only on a mid-week morning because I wouldn't enjoy it if it was packed. read more

A friend and I love exploring coffee shops in this city and this has been on our hit list for a while Unfortunately for him I was meeting someone at the Warehouse and jumped at the chance when he suggested we go to B&B Absolutely love the store. We only had lattes/macchiatos - my friend couldn't finish his it was so strong but SO good! When I have a chance to go back I no doubt will change my rating to a 5 based on the pictures of the food I've seen posted here. Also they were getting cauliflower ready to pickle and they sell their own granola in jars. And did I mention beautiful flowers for sale? And a fair amount of seating. Gastown has so many hidden gems and this place is no exceptions! With a self-serving concept and two sided entrances, you can come and go as you please. One of the things I love about cafes are the classic wooden cozy vibes it brings which was perfect for a cold rainy day. I met up with a few other friends and we were able to snag a big table for brunch on a weekend. I got the breakfast sandwich which harden a little too fast (which made sense since the bread is toasted up for you) but the egg is nice and made; I wasn't a fan of the red onions though and the egg slice made it a little hard to eat the sandwich since the egg just kept on sliding down. The others got the avocado toast and miso barley bowl. I believe the toast is baked in house since there were loaves of it by the kitchen counter; even if they're not though, it made it look super appealing with the open concept. I definitely want to come back to try this one. Don't let the size of the miso barley bowl fool you, it is jam packed with a ton of colourful ingredients that are perfect for the "healthy" concept. Overall, I love how the place feels and it is a good spot to catch up with friends on some stools over some classic foods that aren't as pricey as many brunch places in Vancouver. read more

I love coming to this bright and charming cafe! It's a treat for the eyes and my belly. There are plenty of plant arrangements scatter throughout the cafe #decorgoals, plus super fine lighting for those Instagram pictures. We have been here a serval times during the weekend, and this place was buzzing. There were people on their computers and reading etc, but we were able to find seats in no time. The menu is not extensive, but everything looks very simple and healthy. I ordered the avocado toast with poached egg, and my husband had the barley bowl. My avocado toast was served on thick slice of warm bread, and the egg was poached to the perfection *yum*. The barley bowl was great, if only the portion was larger. A very cool cafe! I was feeling a tad hungover from a fun night in Gastown and needed a java and recovery food STAT. I ordered the avocado toast thinking it'd be your typical diner, nothing impressive display, but this was a more impressive avocado toast than I could ever have imagined. The ricotta pancakes were amazing - just the right amount of sweet and savory. The figs on top were delicious. The latte was quite ordinary, and even on the bitter side which isn't my preference. The eggs were fluffy and delicious but the sourdough bread they were served on was very thick and hard to eat, and just made that dish sort of carb heavy. Ended up not finishing the bread and just eating the eggs off it, so I suppose it was an expensive scrambled egg basically. Would highly recommend the pancakes tho!!! Best I've had. Restaurant is not surrounded by much so while waiting did not have much to do. Some patio type seating which was nice for the warm day. Cute decorations. read more

Unfortunately we missed breakfast so had to opt for lunch which I tbh didn't mind...not that into avocado toast. Shocker considering I'm from California. Anyways I ended up ordering the turkey sandwich, cinnamon bun, and an iced coffee. The sandwich was pretty good. It was a decent size to where I was okay sharing with my sister. If I'm not mistaken I think they put raisins inside so it added a hint of sweetness. As for the cinnamon bun it complimented so well with the coffee. My favorite part of the meal. As for the service it was ok. I just ordered and picked up my food and that's just about it. They were nice but that's just about it I can say. This cafe is good for a small bite or maybe if you want to get work done on your computer maybe study. They didn't have a lot on the menu anyways. aesthetics: 4/5 food: 4.5/5 service: 4/5 after seeing pictures of the avocado toast from birds and the beets on instagram, i knew that i had to check out this spot for some early morning coffee while i was in vancouver. as a vegan, i ordered the avocado toast without egg, as well as an oat milk latte. my sister ordered the breakfast sandwich, and both of our foods was just enough to keep us full until our next snack trip. there was a huge pile of avocado on my toast, which i was VERY excited about (usually i get a thin layer of avo on avo toast). all of the toasts come on their freshly-baked sourdough bread; i come from san francisco and this place beats boudin sf's sourdough breads by 1000x. the bread wasn't too hard to chew and was warm when i bit into it, which was perfect for the rainy vancouver weather!! ambiance-wise, birds and the beets has a very cozy feel to it. there are tons of tables and i sat by the giant windows, which makes for nice lighting for those flatlay pictures haha. there is also a restroom and wifi (not the fastest, so i wouldn't recommend coming here to do internet-based work). overall, birds and the beets is a chill spot if you're looking to catch up with friends over delicious but simple food, or just wanting to treat yourself to some amazing-tasting baked breads!! i will so return here to try their vegan tofu banh mi the next time i'm in vancity!! read more

We managed to get a seat (pretty spacious cafe)! I was debating between the bowl or the basic avocado/egg but I think it was a good choice to get the avocado/egg because it came with sour dough! I'll get the bowl next time tho. Their avocado was sooo good. It's not just basic avocado but they add some spices or something into it to make t extra tasty.
