Stopped by this place for a quick pick me up dessert and coffee. My husband walked in and ordered a guava pastry, chocolate milk, and I ordered a sugar free iced Chai . The cashier that assisted my husband was really nice, welcoming, and courteous. I honestly could not give a name because I forgot to ask. Reason I forgot to ask was because my attention was so focused on another employee (Vivian) who was uncommunicative with everyone, not even really making eye contact with customers she was assisting. Best way to describe her was she had a brusque manner. It was all business, and very short. She was borderline disrespectful in my opinion. If Vivian was having a bad day, which caused her to behave in this manner then she should not be at work, where counter service is priority. The pastry and chai may have tasted much better had Vivian's negative attitude not taken away from my positive experience.

Grilled cheese - Havarti and Swiss on Sheepherder bread. With pickle spear.

I always come here for the bucket of Danish cookies, but they have great sandwiches as well! On this visit, I noticed a friendlier crew working, not the folks noted in older reviews. The cookies are still great, and because I wanted a simple lunch, I ordered my favorite sandwich here, the grilled cheese, with Havarti and Swiss cheeses on Sheepherder's bread, with a dill pickle spear! You can also get a 1/2 sandwich with soup or a 1/2 salad. The sandwich is very tasty, with lots of melty cheese on a grilled, panini-style bread that has real body. If you have not tried Sheepherder bread, this is a good chance. Overall, this bakery is solid for pastries and cookies, but the "deli" is great too, and only available from 10 am to 3 pm, so plan ahead.

Birkholm's Bakery and Cafe is another bakery that my family and I checked out while in Solvang! I actually really enjoyed this bakery - I feel like they offered some different items that I did not see elsewhere. They offered Butter Cookies, Tebirkes, Almond Surprises, muffins, different breads and even preserves! I bought a slice of Napoleon and a Blueberry Muffin - both were super good! I love anything with whipped cream and the Napoleon was exactly what I needed - just a massive amount of whipped cream. My daughter also devoured her blueberry muffin! There interior of Birkholm's Bakery and Cafe is actually pretty big - you walk in one side where the bakery is and then the other side is all tables to sit out. Staff were very friendly and helpful! I would absolutely check them out again next time we are visiting Solvang and I would order one of every pastry they offer! Can't wait to come back!

We stopped in Solvang to stretch our legs and get a few sweets for the rest of our trip. We picked up a few things to enjoy and they were good. There areca lot of Danish bakeries here in this town and they all pretty much offer the same selection. This place though had a better price without sacrificing the product.

First time visiting Solvang, the Denmark old town is so beautiful on Christmas Day. Stopped by this bakery for danish coffee, the taste is pretty light and not sweetened. The chocolate chips cookies is super huge, kinda interesting and I had to grab some of them. It's delicious. Love to go back for another visit.

Bottom of brownie

This was my first trip to Solvang and there's just soooo many bakeries! This one had one thing I wanted that the others didn't, a chocolate iced brownie. I knew I wanted it when I saw it. The bakery was clean and bustling. It was amazing to see how many people got themselves into a small space but the staff was all on the move. We were greeted and when it was my turn to order, I asked for my brownie to go and paid. The woman was so kind and asked if I'd like some utensils because it could get pretty messy to eat. I appreciated her warning and thoughtfulness to let me know. The brownie was so moist and the chocolate ganche was perfect. The only thing I didn't like was that there was sugar on the bottom that I didn't know about until I started eating it. It did give it a crunch and many would probably like that, but it made the rich brownie too sweet for me. I ended up just avoiding the very bottom while eating the brownie. I wish I had the stomach space to everything but it's just another reason to come back in the future.

Bought 12 different pastries to try. Out of everything I tried my favorites were the cheese danish and the apricot danish. The pastries are light and flakey and the fillings very sweet. The staff is very nice and patient.

I had a lovely experience at Birkholm Bakery. Having tried Danish pastries at other bakeries in Solvang, these really stand out. Made in-house, fresh and perfectly flaky. The staff are friendly and welcoming too. Highly recommend.

I ordered a Raspberry latte and a Cinnamon roll. This place is awful. The latte tasted like medicine. The Cinnamon roll is one of the worst I've had and is not worth the money. I did not finish my items. The Solvang Bakery, a bit down the same street, was much better.

Wonderful service today 8/2/25 about 9:30am Two double espressos, two cheese danishes, one cinnamon roll. The espresso was bold and flavorful and the perfect temperature. The danishes were AMAZING! Fast and friendly service and a spacious inside.

Lovely cafe and bakery located in the central part of the city. My personal favorite is the eclair paired with a double cappuccino. This time we tried the Danish waffle, it was too sweet for our liking (both the filling and the outside). We also got another pastry which was soft and delicious (in the photo). This is a great place to try many different kinds of pastries. They also have lunch options and lots of seating.

Guava danish

We stopped off in Solvang on our way back north from Santa Barbara and were recommended by a local to try to Birkholm's as a bakery that is truly good and not just touristy. We were really blown away by how good and fresh the danishes were - we tried: guava, strawberry and cheese, pineapple, and raspberry. My favorite was the guava and I would def go back to try the cheese danish. The iced americano from their espresso counter was also decent. Finally, the service was really prompt and friendly and consistent across every employee we interacted with. They were attentive and patient, which you don't often get with busy and crowded bakeries in a tourist hotspot. 5/5!

First time visiting solvang and I heard this place was a must! We went at a time where the lines weren't long which was nice. We ordered their cinnamon crisp and a danish. They were both pretty decent! The danish was a bit too buttery/greasy? for us but it was still very good!

It was loaded with flavor from the Conservas Ortiz white tuna, boquerones, piquillo peppers, egg, arugula, and tonnato sauce. Honestly, I took one bite and completely forgot to take a proper picture. That's usually a good sign. We also tried the Kobe Sando, which was very tasty as well. The bread was a little firmer than I personally prefer, but it still worked well with the sandwich and didn't take away from the overall experience. We sat outside along the side of the restaurant and really enjoyed the seating area. Inside, the deli is just as interesting. They have displays of aged meats and a walk-in room arcade that feels like a hidden gem. It's a unique touch that adds a lot of character to the space. What really stood out was the staff. Everyone we interacted with was genuinely friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. Great food, great atmosphere, and great hospitality. Inside of this restaurant is pretty cute but can get a bit noisy since there are so many people inside. We ordered the Copenhagen caesar, Solvang hot chicken sandwich with crispy potatoes, and the mac & cheese with caramelized onions to share. I love a hot chicken sandwich and theirs is absolutely fantastic. The herbs, shredded cabbage, and pickled onions were a great addition to the spicy fried chicken. The crispy potatoes were so good, they held up well the next day as well! I highly recommend getting the caramelized onions added to the mac and cheese. The portion was quite big so we had to take it to go but it was also great to eat cold straight from the fridge. We are definitely coming back again if we are in the area but will try and make a reservation so we can sit outside next time!

Then, leaving town the next morning, I swung by for the treats to bring home. The place itself is light and open, and well decorated with display cases to the front and the order counter off to one side. I ordered all-new flavors for myself, including lavender honey, pistachio raspberry, strawberry rosé, blueberry lemon, maple bacon, and s'mores. At home, we had a tasting fest, and strangely, much to my chagrin, the s'mores were the LEAST favored! They were described as dry and not tasting "s'morey," and the kids didn't like the "burned marshmallows." So, the s'mores, of which I bought four, sat relatively uneaten save for some nibbles on the edges here and there. The next least favorite was the maple bacon, which also went uneaten. Now, at over $4 for a special donut ($4.02), that caught my attention, but we live and learn. The other flavors were delicious and quite different! They were actually quite fresh and soft compared to the s'mores. We took our time, and even after about two or three days, they were still good. I think that my faves were the blueberry lemon, the pistachio, and the strawberry rosé. The lavender honey was also quite good, too, now that I think about it, so I guess my favorites were all the ones other than the s'mores and maple bacon. In any case, always good to try new things, and with the special flavors here, you will have a chance to do that.

Since we used to own and run a small business ourselves, we know exactly what that feels like. The service model is straightforward: you grab a menu from the front, place your order with the staff, and then get seated either inside or outside. The workflow is smooth, and the young ladies working there were incredibly nice, polite, and helpful. They quickly answered questions, and the food was brought right to the table. I just wish the kitchen's output matched the standard set by the front-of-house staff. The food and drinks were generally underwhelming. The orange juice was disappointing and tasted far from fresh--honestly, a high-pulp Tropicana from the grocery store would have been a massive upgrade. My date, Ellalina, had one sip and gave up on the OJ. The chorizo and eggs were completely average and totally lacked any sort of seasoning. Thankfully, the tables are stocked with hot sauce, salt, and pepper to help inject some much-needed flavor. On the plus side, it is priced very reasonably compared to some of the other pricey breakfast options in the immediate area. The ambiance is quite pleasant. The indoor space features a decent amount of seating, and it looks like there might even be an additional back room available. However, the real draw is the outdoor patio seating. Equipped with shade umbrellas, it's a great little setup to sit outside, relax, and take in the main street traffic. It's a convenient, budget-friendly stop with a very sweet staff, but the kitchen needs to step up the seasoning game.
