Take a look at my photos first--the cake and the bill just didn't match. I ordered three items (two cakes and a coffee), but the receipt only listed two, and they weren't even the items I had. I checked the menu and realized the bill was actually for less than I should have paid; it was likely mixed up with the customer sitting next to me, who I remember had ordered a Napoleon. Looking at the prices later, I found the menu quite strange: the Chocolate Eclair is $11.95, while the Napoleon is a dollar less. Anyone who has ever made both will admit that an eclair is much easier to prepare than a Napoleon--in fact, an eclair might be the easiest item in a bakery. It's an interesting pricing choice. This bakery must be very famous; even the AI I used to plan my trip from Pasadena to San Jose recommended it. Since it isn't peak season, I easily found a parking spot on the main street, which was a relief compared to ten years ago when I had to drive in circles to find one. Even in the off-season, there was still a line--not too long, but a line nonetheless. The pastries in the case were all beautifully made and looked delicious. It was difficult to decide, but I eventually chose a Chocolate Eclair and a Danish Waffle. I went with the eclair because it was one of the few Western-style cakes available in my hometown of Shanghai when I was growing up. I've loved them since childhood. Back then, the only other Western desserts we could find were Palmiers, Chestnut Cream Cakes, and cups of whipped cream that you would just eat directly. The eclair tasted excellent, with a texture that was a perfect mix of soft and crispy. The cream was a little oily but still acceptable, and while the whole thing was quite sweet--a bit beyond average--I could still enjoy it. The Danish Waffle looked a bit like a fried Chinese donut, or Youtiao, stuffed with whipped cream, but the outside was actually a light, crispy puff pastry. It was much better than I imagined--crispy without being hard and perfectly baked. The filling was the same cream used in the eclair, combined with raspberry jam. I later realized the Danish Waffle was only $6.25, nearly half the price of the eclair despite being just as good. It's strange that the Chocolate Eclair is the most expensive item in the bakery; it's good, but compared to the Danish Waffle, the price is a bit high. I saw some people complaining that the bakery doesn't have a restroom. When I asked, the staff politely directed me to the nearby park. I accepted the answer, though I can't imagine how they handle the crowds during the busy season. Regardless, this is a five-star experience, no doubt--just be sure to check your bill when you pay. I don't want to pay more than I owe, but I don't want to pay less, either.
I found a piece of plastic inside an apple pastry I ordered here. Even if it wasn't plastic or something else, the fact that there was a hard, unchewable foreign object in an apple pastry is completely unacceptable and makes no sense. I brought it to a staff member expecting at least an apology or some concern. Instead, they dropped the piece, insisted that it wasn't plastic, and then asked me with an annoyed expression, "Do you want your money back?" I then went back to my table and sat down, and a woman who seemed like the owner came over with the money. She forcefully placed it on my table without saying anything properly, which honestly made me feel even worse and more disrespected. I was honestly shocked by the way the situation was handled. Finding a foreign object in food is concerning enough, but the lack of apology or concern, along with how the refund was handled, made the experience even worse. Very disappointing customer service.
A very convenient place to go if you want a place to sit and grab a pastry and coffee. Stroller friendly. Beautiful area walking distance to other shops and restaurants. Would recommend!
Mmm! There's one delight after another here! I felt we used great restraint as we chose just one item for each of us. My hubs chose a turnover for later while I got the almond bear claw, which certainly wasn't going to make it past the end of the street! The outside had a satisfyingly slight crunch as I bit through the sugar and almonds on top. The pastry was a flaky, buttery delight, while the almond paste on the inside was subtly nutty and slightly sweet. I definitely had little kid face with evidence all over my cheeks! What a delight! And thank goodness I don't live closer!

There was lots of seating inside. The line moved very quickly and before I knew it I was enjoying a danish pastry. I would go back the next time we are in town.

Every bite of the butter cookies melt in your mouth with a buttery, perfectly balanced amount of sugar and distinct deliciousness that cannot be crafted by any rookie chef. The staff are amicable, knowledgeable, and passionate of their work and will have you walking out of the shop happier than a kid who learned to ride a bike for the first time.
Enjoyed a fresh and delicious cheese Danish - my first "real" Danish pastry and it was so good - look at that lamination! "Old-timey" interior vibe, tables indoors and outdoors. In the midst of the Solvang shops & restaurants.
How do you resist when you see a case that looks this delicious?! And the aroma to match. Grabbed danishes to go and even the next day they were still delicious. Indulge. Enjoy. It's worth every bite.

If you haven't been to this bakery, you're probably missing out...lol.... A major hot spot in Solvang. There's a good amount of bakery but this one takes the cakes. Normally always a line during the weekend so be prepare to wait. But come midweek, you should be ok. Right when you walk in, the sweet fresh smell of baked goods. The danishes are one that's not to be missed. Their raspberry danishes, chefs kiss. Not only danishes, the strudels, crème puffs, eclairs and all their amazing creations. Rows and rows of goodness in the glass case. Can't tell you about the drinks as it's alway the sweets for me. To go or for later, gifts for friends. There's always some kind of reason for a visit here. Even to just grab something for a snack. The choices are endless. Service is always great. All the staff are very friendly and sweet. Oh my WOW!! Go to Mortensen's if youre in Solvang! Some of the best bakery items anywhere. You must get a Pringle! We went to the case, the gals were so nice and helpful picking out local items! Its a darling little bakery decorated so cute! No picture of the kringle- we ate it
WOW! This bakery is beyond amazing. Everything we tried was absolute perfection! The Danish waffle, the Sarah Bernhardt fancy cookie, and Cinnamon Danish are worth every calorie. I'll never have a cookie like the SB...it officially made it to my #1 spot. Staff was friendly and upbeat.

We picked up a large assortment of pastries and cookies, and the pricing felt very reasonable for the variety and portion sizes we received. The ordering process was a bit confusing, as the line flow wasn't very clear. It would have been much more convenient if there was a clear entrance and exit to keep things moving smoothly. As for the treats, the Napoleon was light and flaky, though a bit too sweet for my taste. The chocolate rum ball was a good size with a nice chocolate flavor, but the rum flavor was very subtle and barely noticeable. Overall, a solid bakery stop in the heart of Danish Town and a good option if you're looking to try a variety of classic Danish sweets.

My family and I knew that it was a must to stop into a Danish bakery while in Solvang and Mortensen's was first! Mortensen's is a landmark in Solvang, the building is huge and they even have nice lawn area where you can sit and enjoy your treats! We ordered an assortment of cookies, an Almond Croissant, Cheese Danish and a Pistachio Bar. There were so many pastries to choose from - we had a hard time walking away and not buying one of everything! They had tubs of Danish Butter Cookies and massive Danish Kringles! They also had plenty of seating inside as well! I loved seeing all of the Spring and Easter decorations throughout - it was a very welcoming atmosphere! Staff were also friendly and gave recommendations! I would definitely come back and visit Mortensen's the next time I am in Solvang! Check them out! read more

Didn't even get the chance to order, from here. As soon as we walked in families were welcomed and standing in line looking at the pastries. As the others, my mom (Hispanic) went to go take a look as well, and stood in line patiently while other familes ordered. One of the managers (very tall white lady with blonde hair) started asking my mom in a very annoyed manner "Are you ready to order or what?" and my mom had said "Oh not yet im just looking at the moment," but some how that didn't register with this worker, as she look at her other associate and rolled her eyes, side eyeing my mom. They were unprofessional with how they treated customers, more importantly my mom, and didn't have any patience for those who were viewing the menu. If you're coming to solvang, go to Birkholm Bakery instead, they're much more welcoming and friendly to visitors read more

In short, easy to find and delicious traditional Danish pastries! This place is right on the main road and is easy to find. During busy weekends, expect the line to run out the door, but don't worry - it moves fast. They had a wide assortment of pastries to choose from. I tried the Danish waffle and my +1 got a cheese danish. Both were good, but the waffle really stood out! The bread was impossibly flaky (in the best way) and delicate, sole being string enough to hold the berry filling. A cup of black coffee for my +1 and an Americano for me helped balance the sweetness. We decided to visit again the next day, on our way out of town. This time we opted to share a chocolate pistachio bar, which was decadent, and a full-size Danish Kringle. The pastry was delicate and flavorful, and paired with another cup of black coffee. This was a favorite stop and we'll come back next time we're in the area! read more
A must try while in solvang! The danishes and pastries were very delicious with so many options to choose from. My husband orders a little bit of everything. The service was appropriate but nothing spectacular. Ambiance definitely had an old school vibe. I will definitely visit when we come back to Solvang. read more

We were greeted right away and lots of seats available when we went around 3 pm. Loved their cream cheese danish and other pastries which we devoured right away. Coffee are ok , the brewed coffee was unlimited. They don't have a lot of choices for drinks read more

Solvang is such an amazing town. We try to stop by whenever we are in the area. I am a big fan of the architecture and the food especially the pastries. Mortensen's danish bakery has some of the better danishes in town. We arrived on a Tuesday afternoon. The bakery is located right in the heart of Solvang off the Hwy 246. Parking is accessible in the nearby free parking lots and street parking. Once inside, it is bright, spacious, and inviting. The large window case display of pasties, danishes, cookies and other goodies looks so appetizing. We ordered the cream cheese danish, raspberry danish, bear claw, and a few cookies. The danishes were delicious, buttery, and flaky. Their creamy filling was sweet and delectable. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Mortensen's Danish Bakery. The staff was friendly and helpful with the menu. We can't wait to come back to Solvang to indulge in more goodies. read more
Yummm!!! I came to the iconic place in Solvang to get some danishes, and it was highly satisfied! Luckily there wasn't a line when I arrived so everything was super quick- the staff was very friendly and helpful and had amazing recommendations! While waiting for a table at a nearby restaurant, we stopped in to Mortensen's Bakery. I must confess that we normally go to a different Danish bakery on the other end of town. Can't recall that I'd ever been to Mortensen's before. The friendliness of the young woman behind the counter alone would bring me back. She was wonderful about knowing the qualities of the large array of pastries. She made suggestions about what would most likely please our young granddaughter. For me, I don't usually order a fruit pastry when I visit a bakery like this one. The cherry Danish looked too amazing to pass up, so that will be a main highlight of breakfast tomorrow morning, along with coffee. They bake all their pastries at that location, so they must be very fresh. The interior of the shop has tables to sit and enjoy the baked goods. It's somewhat dated and could use some freshening and accessorizing. The main event is definitely what's in the bakery display cases. They also provide a number of bistro tables outside in the shade, which is a nice touch, especially on warm days like today. read more

The best pastries in the Solvang game. Mortensen's is a quaint bakery situated in the heart of Solvang. The danish waffles are easily the sweetest desserts I've ever had as the puff pastries are coated in sugar and filled inside with sweetened whipped cream and raspberry jam but in the best way possible. Eating one danish is enough to keep you wired and alert the entire day. The other pastry that has been a hit or miss with my family is the pistachio bar enrobed partially in chocolate. Some feedback I've heard is that it's artificial tasting but I think it has more of a marzipan flavor so that can be off putting to some. It can get busy here so I recommend to come early if you can or during off times but be warned that they can run out of some pastries. I would know firsthand since we came here one time around 2:00PM-3:00PM in the afternoon and they were all out of danish waffles. read more

Finally I get to visit Moretnsen's bakery in Solvang today. We had blueberry danish, Chocolate eclairs and napoleons to eat there and the next thing you know, we got the whole box to go Miss Jill, one of the owner was so nice and kind. All staffs were friendly as well Highly recommended when you in the area read more
This place is very popular so we tried it we usually go somewhere else but since everyone online has been posting about it I got curious. There is nothing special here the baked goods were average, the staff were ok and the ambiance and place was alright. I think It is over rated ... it is expensive but it isn't worth the money I would rather spend my money elsewhere... and they didn't have the aebleskiver so we had to go somewhere else read more
Such a cute bakery with Swedish vibes. It was a little crowded inside, but everyone was served quickly. The chocolate eclair is DELICIOUS and I highly recommend. Get a box to-go and enjoy while walking around Danish town or sit at a table inside the bakery Parking: Danish town has designated public parking lots and it's usually busy on the weekends, so don't expect to be able to just pull up and get some pastries read more

If you haven't been to Mortensen's Danish Bakery, what are you even doing?The options here are absolutely incredible, it's almost overwhelming in the best way possible. We tried the Cheese danish and WOW. Perfectly flaky layers, topped with sliced almonds, and filled with creamy cheese. Yummmm. Every bite was buttery, crisp, and just the right amount of sweet. If you're anywhere near here, stop what you're doing and run, don't walk to this place. Totally worth it! read more

Pretty long line to get in and order. It's a bit intimidating as you're asked what you want but you can either read off the board just the name and price or hope you can get a glance between people in line of what is in the cases. I'm not very familiar with Danish pastries so I felt very panicked to select an item with everyone waiting. I was trying to look up items online so I could see on what the filling were flavor, etc. I wish there were print outs or something elsewhere to know about each pastry they offer. read more
