The fat is soft and adds to an over all flavor of the goat. The consome is for dipping and eating as a soup. We also got a cabeza taco. The meat in the head is rich and just a little more tender. It could be that I was not used to it being made this way. Everyone on my table loved their food (birria plate, birria consommé bowl & quesabirria combo). Small menu, all birria-based. Which is what they should stick to considering that's what they specialize in and continue to. One less star only because they were a bit disorganized. Out here on a visit from California. I was skeptical about eating Mexican food outside of Mexico and California because I've been so spoiled and have high expectations. This was by far the best meal that I've had during my trip here and I am still blown away by the authenticity and amazing flavors! This Michelin Bib is still worthy of their ranking. The customer service and food quality are still top notch. This visit, we tried the cheese quesadilla, quesabirria, and consomme. All the food items were really good but were missing the little extra to make it a 5 star experience. Worth a visit to try if you haven't tried goat meat before. I was over in the area for a meeting the other week and wanted to stop by because I had heard great things! Birriera Zaragoza did not disappoint. As soon as I walked in you felt like family. There were a few tables and most of them were filled and this was on a weekday afternoon. I got my order to go because I had other meetings, but the owners asked if I was sure I didn't want to sit down and eat. I'm going to make sure I come back so that I can get the full experience of this family owned establishment. I ordered the quesabierria and it was outstanding. Even though I didn't eat it right away, it was still hot when I ate it. The food was packed with flavor. I love that they use goat! It gave it a real rich and savory flavor. Like Menudo, Birria is a 'Weekend' dish, because making it is a huge production that requires many people. But here one can eat Birria any day of the week. The restaurant is clean and well managed. I can't pretend to add any value with another review of a little restaurant this widely celebrated--a Michelin Bib Gourmand award for several years running, an appearance on Netflix's "Las Cronicas del Taco," and enthusiasm by most of 600-plus folks here on Yelp--that has a small menu intensely focused on a single item. That single item, of course, is roasted goat. Oftentimes, a restaurant devoted to an item this singular has perfected its craft, and Birrieria Zaragoza almost certainly qualifies. I went with the plato chico, surtido--that's just a small plate of rib meat, bones-in, served with three terrific house-made tortillas and the usual taco fixings (cilantro, diced onion, a spicy house-made salsa rojo), and doused with a wonderful consomme. Simple, but everything was just about perfect. This goat is less gamey that you might be used to with goat, which is fine, but I don't mind a little gaminess. Still great--beautifully tender stuff--and I suspect that's about the freshness of the product. The $16 price tag for this particular menu item might seem a little high, but you're basically getting three good-sized, superlative tacos. From that standpoint, well worth it. The wife went with a couple of quesabirria tacos. She was about as enthused as I was, i.e., muy mucho. The Machito tacos were crisp and reminded me of Mexico, it is hard to find Machito tacos made this way in Chicago. They brought me a taste of the Goat Head taco and I enjoyed it very very much. Ah Chicago. You cold cold city. The moment I stepped off the plane, the familiar craziness of the city weather settled into my mind. I was home. Of course, one of Chicagos classics, Birrieria Zaragoza, was on my mind. I headed over straight from Midway to get one of my favorites: birria tacos. I'm a big fan of lamb, so you know I get excited for this place. High quality tortillas, delicious and succulent meat, I was in for a world of deliciousness to fill my stomach the rest of the day. Even though it was a blizzard outside, the warmness from the server takes that all away. The hospitality is the cherry on top of the delicious meal, and nothing can take that away from this cozy spot. The quesadilla was my least favorite of the three things we tried and still one of the best quesadillas I've ever had - that good. Probably the best tacos of my life. We got 1 lb goat head/Cabeza w/ cilantro, cebolla, limones, picante, consomé y chiles de arbol & Molcajete salsa or tomato sauce that I forgot to ask exactly what it was but it was good! The roasted goat was absolutely perfect. So juicy, tender, and flavorful. 1 lb is a good amount between two guys. So much good flavor with the molcajete sauce and consome broth and roast goat. This made me very happy and a little sleepy lol. I love how they operate out of use the entire (former) residential building to seat people and cook on both floors. Finally was able to come by to try the infamous birria! They were just recognized as a 2023 Michelin Bib Gourmand. My partner raves about this spot constantly, but they close by 6PM so get there early or plan for a lunch! The staff was really friendly and the atmosphere is very laidback like coming home for a family meal. There's a small parking lot on the left side and you can order at the counter. We started with the Quesabirria which was solid too with a slightly crisp outside with the melty cheese. The star of the show was the Large Bowl / Tazón Grande which includes tortillas, cilantro, onion, limes, picante hot sauce and arbol chiles. The goat was really tender and the consomme was flavorful. I waited for over 20 minutes and not a single order was brought into that room. After almost half an hour I went back into the restaurant and they apologized and gave me my food a minute later. Idk if they forgot about us or what but when I pre-order something, I expect it to be ready within a reasonable time of when they said. Zaragoza's is the GOAT of tacos in the South Side. The authentic cooking method of the goat meat results in a perfectly charred outside while the inside is juicy and intensely flavorful. On my most recent road trip of the Midwest, my friend and fellow Yelper suggested Birrieria Zaragoza for lunch. I trust her. She's not steered us wrong. Well, there was this one time ... Anyway, gonna start off with parking. It sucks. Not as bad as Los Angeles, but can still cause some frustration if their small lot on W 49th is full. I saw street parking but I don't know if it's metered or what the restrictions are. I found a spot in the free lot. Walk in and it's not too big. 20-30 max. A few seats at the counter. Otherwise, tables. Not sure how big parties are handled. Call 'em to find out. Met the owner, Norma who basically ordered for us, served us and was our awesome host while we enjoyed what I felt was the best meal I had on this road trip. So much so, that I had to get a pic in with her as we also chatted it up about her family and life. So, needless to say, service was most excellent. For us anyway. But on to the food. Goat. Birria. It's the only thing on the menu and they're doing it right. Numerous awards including the Michelin Bib Gourmand. And they have my endorsement as the best Goat I've had in all my travels around the world. She served us Molcajete, to go with our quesadilla - and even gave me ground up pepper to help spice mine up. It wasn't hot (to me) but I loved the roasted flavor it brought to the meal - as I put that stuff on everything we had. Except the cheesecake of course. I'm not one of those guys. She made sure we got the bone in as it offered more flavor and it basically slid off the bone and right into my mouth. I finally tried Birrieria Zaragoza. I must admit it's been a challenge here since my wife doesn't like goat, so I kind of had to force her. She doesn't like goat for the same reason she doesn't like lamb, it taste to "gamey for her. The dining area is very tiny and can get packed very quickly during peak hours. When we arrived they didn't have a table and had us wait in their waiting area next door. About ten minutes passed and they came and called us over. Once we were seated it was game over. Our waiter was very nice and explained everything perfectly as it was our first time. He seemed very happy to be there and very to joyful to explain the different birria options. He did it all with a smile and made us feel at home. My wife ordered their birria quesadilla. A handmade corn tortilla with birria and queso in between. You couldn't taste the birria as much which was perfect for my wife. My daughter likes soupy entrees so we ordered a small bowl of consommé and she loved it and finished it all. We also ordered their horchata and it was delicious. I ordered their Plato Chico with bone in. I actually regret ordering this and next time I will order it without our bone and definitely their Plato Grande. The birria itself was so delicious and very tender. This is no lie hands down the best birria I have ever had. The consommé that was added on top just made it taste so much better. The entree also came Erich fresh cut cilantro and cebolla and lime wedges, salsa, four fresh handmade tortillas and they also brought some salsa de molcajete. Put all of that in one of their handmade and you have one of the best tasting tacos. Definitely one of the best meals I've had in a long time and truly some of the best customer service I've received at a Mexican restaurant in a long time. The crew there all works together to ensure your truly getting a great experience and as we were leaving everybody in that joint waved good bye and thanked us for coming in. You KNOW you're in the right place when they have their consomé in coffee pots to keep it warm! This place absolutely knocks it out of the park when it comes to birria and it is deservedly on the Michelin Bib Gourmand for a reason. Servers are incredibly friendly and were great with helping us out on our first trip here. We initially got the bowl, but we preferred getting the plate as we discovered there is such a thing called too much consomé.
