When you walk in, you can sit wherever you want you will be greeted immediately and served your drinks upon placing your order. I ordered a Horchata and it was delicious. It was nice light creamy the perfect amount of cinnamon. I ordered it with no ice that absolutely impacted the flavor and made it even better. It was like an ice cream drink. The service is very welcoming and family oriented. We ordered three steak tacos and one steak huarrache. My boyfriend said the steak tacos were decent. They did bring them out pretty quick and I don't think they were as fresh as they could've been. My order of the steak huarache came out a few minutes after he received his food. My meal was fresh and delicious. The steak was seasoned perfectly. It was not overly greasy. The cheese was delicious. The beans were the perfect texture added onto the base of the huarache. The huarache was a bit more tougher in texture, but it held up very well with everything loaded on top of it. I enjoyed it! I will absolutely be coming back. The sauces were good too. Still a solid spot even year later! I really liked the tostada, as they are stacked with toppings but doesn't feel too heavy since it's a lot of fresh shredded cabbage. The taco plates are filling - Lengua was my favorite. Chorizo was a little too salty for me and maybe adding something fresh/sweet would cut the saltiness a bit better. This review is specific to a corporate catering event we utilized Los Comales for, which was referred to me as great Mexican food. We needed to feed ~100 people and do a quick serve experience. The catering team here is fantastic - they promptly responded to my inquiry and informed me of these grab and go taco bags they offer, which was perfect for what we needed (e.g., short on space and needed something that could be picked up and consumed within a half hour). Christina helped me identify the best mix of tacos to choose, as well as worked with me to accommodate a host of dietary restrictions, which made for a really favorable experience. Further, delivery was super smooth, with the driver sending a link with his tracker so our admins could plan accordingly to pick up the food. Taqueria los Comales is considered to be the first taqueria in Chicago; they have several locations throughout the Chicagoland area, and they're known for their tacos. I had heard that they serve up a great chimichanga - note that each location has a slightly different menu, and it seems as if this location in Pilsen may be the only one that offers it? I decided to dine-in, as no one wants a soggy chimichanga. My server was nice and efficient, but it seems as if the waitstaff tag-teams, so you'll have different individuals bringing out your drinks, the meal, etc. I ordered the Chimichanga Dinner - protein choices include steak, chicken, pork & onions, flank steak, steamed beef, tripe, Mexican sausage (aka, chorizo), and dried beef; I opted for the steak (carne asada). The chimichanga is filled with refried beans and cheese, and comes with a side of lettuce, tomatoes, and slices of avocado, with also refried beans topped with cheese and rice. I did request my chimichanga to be extra crispy, which they delivered. The fillings were okay - I thought the steak bits could have been more flavorful and more juicy, and the chimichanga could have been a bit more greasier? I felt it was a little dry. The side of refried beans, which I usually enjoy, along with the rice were both more on the colder end; if they came out piping hot, it would been better. The shredded lettuce were wilted and didn't seem as fresh; avocado slices were generous and well-ripened. There are bottles of salsa on the table, along with hot sauce; it had a nice kick and was a good complement to the chimichanga. I also tried their horchata, which comes in 2 sizes; this was more on the sweeter end. A small cup of sliced limes were served; maybe better for those who are eating tacos; I did notice, however, these were a bit dried out. In terms of paying, you just walk up to the cashier and let them know your table number; there is a charge for those who are using card, so bring cash! The restaurant was actually more spacious than I thought; there were several parties dining in, but there was a constant flow of those doing carry-out orders. Regardless, getting here was pretty simple, as it's near the UIC/medical center area. They do have a designated parking lot behind the restaurant, but you'll have to get onto 17th Street to access it; then, you'll just have to walk through the alley to get to the entrance of the taqueria. I moved to the neighborhood a few weeks ago and this was our very first option of food to eat at. The portion were good and the staff was friendly. The day was Tuesday and what do most people think of on Tuesday? Taco Tuesday of course. I happen to drive down 18th street in Pilsen and the first place I see is Comales #3 which is around the corner to Costco. The interior was fairly large inside and the place was packed, I took a quick glance to see if there is any table open and there were none. To me that is a good sign that the food is awesome. Visited with three friends, two of which were non-Spanish speaking. We ordered tortas, one asada and one de pechuga del pollo a la plancha (being closest to grilled). The torta de pechuga was for a friend who specifically has dietary restrictions, so when they brought out a torta de pechuga empanizado (breaded) we were all visibly confused. Myself and my other Spanish speaking friend went to speak with some of the waitresses as we didn't have one specific waitress, but more so they rotated who would drop by our table. She and another waitress then proceeded to explain to us the differences between plancha, parrilla, and asado, when we had clarified in our order that we wanted grilled due to dietary restrictions. When trying to rectify the problem, they sent us back to our table, saying that there was nothing wrong with the food they sent out and insinuating that we just ordered wrong. We then ordered another torta de pechuga, insisting they just put chicken on the flattop because we didn't want to leave our friend without eating, to which they continued to pushback on us for, stating that what we were ordering was not something they offered, despite listing it on their menu. A 3rd (different) waitress then brought out the food and stood there with visible disdain and asked if it was good enough and we said it was good (they brought us a grilled chicken breast torta). After later paying and leaving, the entirety of the kitchen staff waved to us and smirking/laughing at us as we left. Overall, really disappointed, I was really hoping to put some friends onto this spot as my family has been coming here for years and loves the food. However, it was really upsetting to be essentially gaslit by staff who kept rotating out and no one really listening to us on what we wanted for our friend. Would have loved to see eye-to-eye and level with the staff as I prefer to work through conflict, but the staff kept rotating out and no one really took accountability for the issue at hand or for the miscommunication. This location is very clean, located on 18th near lots of bars, they stay open late and the service is fast and friendly. They also have security at the door. A very cute, lowkey place to grab a quick bite to eat. The food is pretty average though. I have been here a handful of times and have tried an assortment of their tacos. Overall, for the price and all the table condiments they offer, I would give the tacos a 3.5/5. Sometimes the meat can be a tad dry. They use to have this pickled cauliflower in their little pickle jug, but I think they have recently switched to jicama instead and it just does not hit the same. I've never had this issue before. When I asked for her name to file a complaint, she flat-out refused and said she didn't have to give it to me.
