I've lived in Bishop since I was a kid, and Back Alley Bowling used to be one of my favorite places to eat. I was a regular for years. Unfortunately, ever since the ownership changed, the experience has gone downhill. The customer service is consistently rude and unwelcoming. It feels like staff are irritated just having to take your order. The food is now overpriced for the quality you get, which is a big change from how it used to be. I stopped going for about a year, but recently decided to give it another chance. I called in an order for myself and my disabled grandfather, who only has one arm. I politely asked multiple times if they could please cut the steak for him and even explained why. They clearly seemed annoyed by the request. When I picked up the food, everything looked rushed and just thrown into the boxes--and the steak was not cut. The rest of the meal was just as disappointing. The taquitos were plain with only cheese on top--no sides like guacamole or sour cream, especially disappointing for the price. The loaded potato wasn't even "loaded," just a plain potato. Between the poor service, lack of care, and declining food quality, this place is nothing like it used to be. It's honestly sad to see something that used to feel welcoming and enjoyable turn into somewhere I now dread going. I wouldn't recommend stopping here anymore. I came in on a Thursday afternoon. It was not busy at all. Well, actually, I can't say that. There were a good number of people inside of the bowling alley. I think there were probably around a dozen. They look like they were a part of some type of organized group that probably frequent bowling alley. I thought it was really sweet the local high school graduates pictures on the wall. Actually, they were hanging. But nonetheless, I thought that was really awesome. The bowling alley is very small. I didn't quite catch how many lanes there were, but there are not many. There is a bar and I believe they do serve food there as well but we were not there for either. We wanted to get some information and to see what it might cost, but I have to say, after going in there and being overlooked for so long... we ended up leaving. I got a lot of funny looks. Maybe it was because we obviously looked like we were just passing through the town. I am not sure. All I can say is that it looked like a cute lil local bowling alley, that small town feeling for sure. read more

Came into town today with my family and found this place off of Yelp -- so glad we tried it! The food was absolutely amazing, from flavor to presentation. I had a ribeye steak and it was a 10/10. Who would've thought a bowling alley would have great food. Our server, Michael, made the experience even better. He was friendly, attentive, and had great conversation that made us feel genuinely welcomed. He was handling all the tables by himself with a smile on his face! Right away when I walked in, I noticed how clean the restaurant was, and even the bathroom was nice and spotless which always says a lot. Overall, a fantastic experience from start to finish. Went here and had the ribeye steak cooked perfectly rare +. My wife and I split the dinner which came with two sides. I had the onion rings and she had a fantastic baked potato. This place has absolutely abysmal customer service. My boyfriend and I came on a Saturday night to go bowling. When we got there, we were told there was a waiting list and that the wait would be approx half hour but likely less. At the half hour mark, I went and checked with the guy at the counter, only to be met with a ton of attitude and excuses. For a place that is known to have a lot of tourism, you'd think this small town business would be able to handle a small crowd building up without getting all fussy about it. read more

Big group of us had a reservation and specifically wanting the prime rib special. Our reservation was at 7 and they told us they had already sold out of the prime rib. So we were beyond disappointed. Also the check was not able to be split by our individual groups it had to be split in 2 and was not accurate. Just unhappy with the whole thing. The bowling alley itself is fine. Dozen or so lanes, cosmic bowling, child railings and regular bowling. Score computer worked well and was updated, however the lanes themselves need work as does the ball return as balls were getting stuck repeatedly. The younger employees working the bowling alley section were just ok. Prices were average for a Sunday afternoon game and of course shoes are available for rent. Overall a good time was had. The restaurant however was very good. I had heard before this is where locals eat and was happy to finally get a chance to try it out. This isn't just bar food and it was very good. Ordered a Blue Cheese Burger with fries, Turkey Sandwich on Sourdough with a very nice dinner salad and Chicken Wings. Everything was surprisingly good. Steaks and seafood were also on the menu and looked really good as the waitresses passed by. Service and pricing was great and it was a nice comfortable vibe. The average bowling lanes is the only thing that prevents this from 5 stars. I come to Bishop often and this is probably the best dinner in town. We went there to eat steak since our friends highly recommended. Yet, they only serve dinner menu after 4om, we were there 2:30pm. Soooo, we decided to order burgers and onion rings. And they were fantastic!! it is in a bawling alley, so it is a bit loud, but we had no problem talking to each other without screaming to each other. Staying in Bishop over the summer and checked into Yelp for. Place for dinner. A bowling alley? Really? We like to try new things and places. It was 100* outside so we drove over and had dinner. Hubs had the shrimp tempura and a salad. I had the flat iron steak dinner! It was so good that we decided to go back the next night!!! They had shrimp chowder which was soooooooooo good! Always fun. This seems like the place to go. We went on a Sunday and had $5 games. It's nice to have the bumpers for the little. They Also have a thing where the little can roll the ball down the ramp. Good fun and they have music playing. The Bowling Alley was one of my favorite places to eat and I used to recommend this place. Now I am going to tell people to stay far away from this place. We went to celebrate my friend's birthday last night. Service was rude. Ordered a drink, took forever to get it and when it came it was like in a 4oz glass. Ordered the prime rib, and wanted rare, it came more med rare with no flavor. It came with a baked potato asked for it extra fully loaded. It was not it was okay, it also came with a salad nothing to write home about. They charge 38 dollars for it. I think I would have preferred some seasoned cardboard over what I got. They missed up my husband ordered we were with 3 other people and they got appetizers. Our bill was about 200 dollars. Was staying at Creekside Inn right next door and gave this place a shot. Schat's Bakery also next door to the inn was closed so ended up at the bowling alley. I'm glad I did. The bacon bbq cheeseburger was delicious! Lots of flavor and the fries were hot and crispy which doesn't happen with to-go orders. My iced tea was refreshing and tasted fresh brewed. A little pricey but worth it. The drive up from LA left me starving and this meal hit the spot! read more

Great dinner at a bowling alley? I didn't believe it either, but we now eat there almost every time we go through Bishop and it's always great. Lots of choices and friendly service. Spring for an extra $2 and get the delicious Caesar salad instead of the also good regular salad that comes with the entree. Sometimes there is a wait but it's worth it. read more

I was a bit skeptical to give this place a try since it was in the bowling alley. Walking in, there was a host podium and a sign saying, "please wait to be seated" and the was a waiting list with a couple names on it. This is not a huge place, so there's limited seating available. Turns out there was a motorcycle group taking up a lot of tables...so partly the reason for a wait list. So as not to wait, I opted to sit at the bar to eat. Had a bacon cheeseburger, fries, & a Mr. Pibb (Coke products). I liked the burger although I requested well done and it was medium-well. But overall, a good burger. The french fires were off a little...hard to nail down what it was. They were hot and they were crispy on the outside, but the inside was off...almost like they were cooked then stuck under a heat lamp. Being hungry, I still ate all of them. Upon leaving, there were probably 20+ people now waiting to be seated...I guess popularity is the other reason for a wait list! Guess I'll have try some of the other menu items next time. read more

I'm not positive, but the sense I get is that this place has been sold in the last year or so. After seeing a number of these "transitions", you start to see a pattern. The steps the new owners take: 1) Fight with and/or fire high talent professionals who are capable and were loyal to the previous owners 2) Cut out most of the steps that made the place special (eg. freshness, drink specials, wines by the glass, etc.) 3) Put up a bunch of big screen TVs - the more offensive the better, so most guests won't notice the difference And this works for a while. The problems is, these steps are usually followed, withing a couple of years of: 4) Realize that your revenues are down, even as the market is expanding 5) Follow steps 1-3 harder - and add lower prices, thinking that you can fool a new group of folks 6) Sell for less than you paid read more

"Don't judge a book by its cover" as the saying goes. A great place to eat with great dinner selection. More than just burgers, but the burgers look great too. Specials can include Prime Rib, Pork Chops, Salmon, Steak done dinner style which includes salad choices, vegetable, potatoes (your choice of how you want) and dessert. We saw a sign that said steaks and lobsters and then we had to do a double-take because it was pointing at the bowling alley. Who would think they would have steak and lobster at a bowling alley but it was getting kind of late so we walked in. The place was absolutely jam-packed we waited about 15 minutes for a table, sat down order two beers , Dilly Dilly got them right away . Johnny ordered lamb and I ordered the specialty Burger and oh my God!! It was absolutely delicious . We got served reasonably fast , food was prepared perfect and the waiter was very nice and attentive. On our way out we asked the host "really what the heck ? a bowling alley restaurant this amazing" he said yes it was a well-kept secret for many years but about 2 years ago it got out and now we have been jam packed every night. They are not trustworthy. We called them on Sunday, July 15th, at 4:48 p.m. according to my phone, and asked them if they would be open for lunch on Monday, July 16th. The guy who answered said "Yes." On Monday we drove all the way over there (a 2 hour drive for us) and they were closed at 12:00 noon. There happened to be someone there and he told us that they didn't open until 5:00 p.m. on Monday. If you cannot trust these people to tell you the truth on the phone, how can you trust them to prepare food to put into your mouth? read more

So we found ourselves hungry in Bishop and I hopped on Yelp to find a place close to our little hotel. I read other reviews on this place and was intrigued by all the positive comments and the fact that this place is pretty much a steakhouse inside a bowling alley. The husband and I wandered over and were quickly seated at a booth. The host was friendly and gave us our menu and the list of specials, he apologized that they had already run out of prime rib for the evening, but other than that everything else was available. I ended up ordering the steak and shrimp dinner with scampi shrimp ($3 more) and my husband got the 60%-40% burger. According to the menu: "60% beef, 40% bacon, 100% delicious". I have to say: this place lived up to the hype. My steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare), the baked potato was loaded with all the trimmings and the shrimp scampi were sooo good: a perfect combination of garlic, lemon and white wine. My husband LOVED his hamburger, his only complaint was that his fries might have been a bit *too* salty. Aside from that, a delicious meal for very reasonable prices. The next time we find ourselves hungry at dinner time and in Bishop, we're going to the bowling alley. read more

My ski instructor in Mammoth insisted the best burger in the area was all the way in Bishop. She said it is a must, so we came here and it didn't disappoint!! The burgers are AWESOME! Probably not the best place if you are in a hurry, but the burgers are great with all high quality ingredients. Local beef and buns! We will be back for sure!! read more

My family and I came down to Bishop for a nice family vacation. We had a TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE here!!! They don't care about tourists that come to visit their place they only care about the locals. They served the locals before we even got our drinks! When we asked the host why that was? He stated "WELL AS YOU CAN SEE WE ARE BUSY BUT YOU ARE MORE THEN WELCOME TO LEAVE" ( in a sarcastic voice).
