We were both pleased with our choices. The meats were juicy and tender. I did not get a side dish. The hubs got corn bread, he said the flavor was good but it was dry. He also got mac-n-cheese, he took maybe two bites of it and didn't finish it. He said reminded him of Kraft mac-n-cheese with some cheddar added to it (and you're talking to folks that go out of their way for a good mac-n-cheese dish). The barbecue wasn't noticeably better than what we've had at the chain Dickey's BBQ which is disappointing given the reputation on here and the price we ended up paying. The brisket was pretty dry even during dinner time and had no bark really. Then the loaded baked potato was also a surprise. It came topped with a large amount of diced yellow onions instead of green onions which if you have ever been to Texas and had BBQ out you know it is much more common, so that was weird. Also the shredded cheese was simply slapped on and wasn't even melted making it feel unfinished. The only good thing was their bbq sauce and the mac and cheese. There was no way I could return it because we were 3 hrs away camping. We were out of cell service so I couldn't even call them. My husband served himself some and I tried about a quarter cup and couldn't handle the taste. We put all of it in a Rubbermaid container and back in the refrigerator. What a disappointment. On the way back through Bishop I stopped by Holy Smokes to show my receipt and photos. I did not bring the container of meat in. They called the owner/manager out to talk to me and she wouldn't even listen to my story. Just pretty much yelled at me. That she wasn't going to replace the mistake unless the meat was in the original container and single use bag. I said that was not possible because I couldn't leave it in there shabby box it was in and keep it in my refrigerator. It was in another container. This place has some of the best BBQ in the area, by far. Don't be fooled by the other place 15 miles south. Today I had The Steer which is chopped smoked brisket on a long roll, and included a pickle spear and side of slaw. The meat was quite good, and included just the right amount of smoke cap chopped into the meat. Yum. My guests had The Texas Ranger (sliced tri tip), a burger, and a loaded potato. All were reported to be very good. FYI, the loaded potato is huge and could be easily split to make two plates or three sides. We arrived at 1 pm on a Sunday, and they were busy. BUT, staff did a great job of managing the crowd and getting the food out. I REALLY appreciate the "No Ticket No Table" policy and hope it continues. Twice while there, someone stopped by our table to check on us, and the woman and man may have been owners because their questions, " How is everything" and "Can we get you anything" seemed genuine, not the typical fly-by question you get at so many places. My nephew as being a typical teen and wouldn't help decide what to eat so we ordered him a large side of mac and cheese and then got a sampler with three meats, mac and cheese, cornbread and beans. We ordered the tri tip, brisket and spicy sausage. The spicy sausage was SPICY! Very good and lived up to the name. The tri tip was very good. Nice and moist and well seasoned. We asked for more of the tender/fatty brisket and it was lovely. They had a few sauce choices on the table and I liked their original house sauce. My nephew actually really liked the mac and cheese and then tried the tri tip and brisket and liked them both. Overall, everything was great. My wife had the spud bud with pulled pork (sorry no photo, food was too good to wait for me to get a photo), and I had the GF Ribs (not glazed), side of baked potato and salad. All of the sauces are gluten free and have great flavor (didn't try the ghost pepper). The ribs were wonderfully done, great flavor and super tender. Highly recommend the baked potato with onions and cheese! The interior of the building is very cute with great decor. Staff was super helpful and attentive.
