I wanted to love it here so badly. The reviews looked good, the views are incredible... but when you're paying for a nice dinner, you expect the food to be as good as the view. It even says on the bottom of the menu "no substitutes. Our chefs make the menu for a specific purpose." Or something like that. But if that's the case, then I'd like to think the food would be good! Maybe our chef was out or something because it was bland and cooked improperly. First of all, it took forty five minutes just to get appetizers. And then our waitress took another 30 to take our food order. And then it took another hour for our food. We were there for three hours. Which is fine, but we were starving!!! The drinks were delicious but one was a bottle of wine, so that seems like the bare minimum. Beside service being slow (our waitress nice but very busy), let's get into the food which was the most disappointing thing... the flatbread was dry. The Brussel sprouts were good but the lardons were hard as a rock (clearly they cook things too long here). The salmon was good but portions seemed small. The soup was fine. The steak was supposed to come medium rare, but as you can see, it was closer to medium well (for $48 that is upsetting and embarrassing they couldn't cook a steak properly). My aunt got the chicken dish and she said it was the blandest thing she's ever had. But the biggest issue was the burger... It was my dad's birthday. So it was extremely frustrating when the burger, the thing he ordered, came out black. And there is a picture of it if you want to take a look. BLACK. Why bring it out? That is so bad on the restaurant! Our waitress immediately came over and said "we are making a new bun right now." So why bring it out? And the fries were cold. Same with my mom's haddock (everything was cold). He also asked for the burger to be medium rare and it was quite literally gray. I think when you go to a nice restaurant, you expect good food. And it was disrespectful to my father on his birthday. Thank goodness they took it off our bill (for that we are grateful), but clearly the kitchen needs some assistance because it ruins the experience when everyone is waiting to eat because one dish is done wrong. And clearly done wrong. It's expensive to go out nowadays. I'm not spending money on food that is mediocre at best. This was frustrating. Thank goodness for the nice view otherwise I feel like this restaurant wouldn't exist. sadly we won't be coming back and waiting weeks for this dinner was not worth it. Don't waste your money here. Or go for cocktails. That was at least good. read more

Just had dinner at the Bistro for about the fifth time in a couple of years. This is always such an enjoyable restaurant to go to. It's the trifecta of excellent food, service, and ambience. We celebrated our 12th anniversary dinner here last night. We booked last minute and walked from our Airbnb. There are actually 3 separate restaurants in this building. It's a little confusing at first. The Bistro appeared to be the nicest, indoor option. It wasn't super busy around 7pm on a Monday. A handful of tables were occupied but plenty of room for walk ins on a Monday night. Our server was so friendly and bubbly. A sweet girl from NH. We chatted all things New England and Kittery. Her service was on point. My hubby and I decided to share all food, to try more. We started with the seasonal salad with the maple vinaigrette. I was hesitant at first but it was delicious. For appetizers, we ordered the Oysters Rockefeller and the traditional Mussels. They were both fantastic. I liked that the mussels sauce wasn't overly garlicky like a lot can be. Simplistic and salty. For our entree we shared the New York strip. I've never had a steak quite like this. Instead of heavily seasoning, like nearly every other steakhouse, it tasted like this steak was marinated. It was simplistically delicious. A little char, a little acidity, and a savoriness of rosemary. Gosh it was just so dang good! The broccolini was heavily peppered, not bad but just be aware. The potatoes au gratin were also unlike anything I've ever had. I don't even like French onion soup but it tasted like the most delicious French onion soup I'd ever had. The cheesy oniony potatoes were simply to die for. I know that I'm going to be craving them once I return home. I wish they'd package these things and ship them! We toasted our anniversary with the Brut champagne. Lighter than the average and not nearly as pungent of how Bruts normally are. Make a reservation of you plan to visit. We waited over an hour because we didn't plan ahead. This elegant outdoor seafood spot is right on the water with views of kittery and the Portsmouth harbor. They have a small bar with seating and a main seating area under a lovely canopy and umbrellas. They serve a variety of small seafood dishes and have a full food and drink menu. They serve local oysters and of course LOBSTER! I ordered a lobster roll with beer battered onion rings, the lazy fisherman lobster cup and a slice of blueberry pie. Everything was fresh and delicious. The lobster cup was outstanding. Service and staff were attentive and welcoming. Nice spot to grab a drink and watch all the activity on the water. read more

Wow, absolutely hate to write poor reviews, especially since we've been to Firsbees Wharf (outdoor venue( so many times and always enjoyed the food, friendly service and views. We finally decided to try their ski club bar on the third floor, and wow! What an unhappy and unwelcoming staff. We should have left. We made a reservation and arrived at noon for their opening time, upon entering the room, the bartender made eye contact and looked away as did the server in the room. No smiles, no welcome, no be right with you. Eventually a young woman on the patio who was setting up tables came to us and said someone would be with us. A few minutes went by and a woman who would be our waitress tried to sit us in the back of the restaurant. We noted that we came to enjoy the view and asked about the table by the deck, note the restaurant was empty. She thought long and hard and said OK. This same waitress was then on the phone complaining to someone that the bartender was "stressed", etc... Again, no smiles, no pleasantness and just a bad vibe in the dining room. We ordered a salad to split and my wife asked if we could have sharing plates, and our waitress said, you can use the bread plates (there was no bread), and that it would take "another trip for the dumbwaiter" to get the plates. The room filled quickly, and we observed that nobody was treated nicely. Eventually a second bartender came, who was friendly and warm to the patrons at the bar. Too little and too late. Honestly we really should have gotten up to leave. I'm still angry that I left a meaningful tip as none was deserved but I thought perhaps understaffed and poor management. When staff is this miserable, something is wrong with management. I can't recommend this group of restaurants any longer. read more

3 stars Great views and vibes and solid service, but we found the lunch selection underwhelming, cocktails lackluster, and the food was hit or miss. The raw oysters were very fresh but at $3.50/each, the fact that they came already topped with mignonette was certainly unexpected. Usually you dress your own oyster. What's more, the mignonette featured carrots, not shallots, which was not mentioned on the menu anywhere. The carrot mignonette had too much carrot texture and raw carrot flavor, and these competing flavors and textures completely overshadowed the delicate oysters. I think it's fine to be experimental with oysters but the fact the menu didn't mention the oysters had raw carrots on them/came already dressed? Unforgivable. The grilled Caesar salad was divine. Great char and smokiness on the lettuce, excellent acidity and salt in the dressing, bacon lardons and croutons added a great crunch. The fried green olives were decent and the clam chowder was oddly very sweet, almost tasting like dessert. Our cocktails were on the muted side. For $14 each, I was expecting more complexity and nuance. read more

My wife and I recently celebrated our anniversary on the deck overlooking the harbor. Staff had thoughtfully placed the flower arrangement that had been delivered earlier and was waiting for us at the table to add to the fantastic view. Our waitstaff was fantastic, with smiles and thoughtful service. The ambiance was sensational, our meals were excellent and the night was magical. We've only been here in the summer time, from Dallas, TX but it's still magical in the winter! "Rebecca" made me the very best cocktail of 2024, she's so kind and personable!! For the last night of Portsmouth restaurant week, we visited bistro 1828 in Kittery. I had shrimp empanada, followed by braised lamb shank on risotto and pumpkin crème brûlée. My friend had sweet potato bisque, followed by blackened salmon and chocolate mousse cake. The food was amazing, the service was excellent, the wine was great and all in all I would recommend it highly. read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting from Cali and had a better experience at this place. Here, we were greeted and seated promptly. Our waitress was very pleasant, however we did notice that a two parties who got seated before us had gotten their orders before ours. I really don't know the reason behind that but at least our waitress apologized for the wait. We ordered drinks, half dozen oysters, a salad, and the pan seared halibut. Trendy place with great views from the upstairs seating area. Come here for the view and a drink not the food. Rather pricey for rather small portions, for example the brussel sprouts. And even then they got it wrong in a few requests. Spending several hundred dollars for a birthday lunch for four, the food was ordinary sub-par. For a $28.00 salmon I want amazing, it's easy to push it out bland. A suggestion, if you want diners to experience a delicious oyster, put the migonette on the side rather than dressing them in the kitchen. Getting a dozen at $3.50 a piece, in our party not everyone wants them dressed in this sauce. A server must be helpful and proactive anticipating guests in the ordering process, this isn't a diner. Also to check orders when requesting cheese be on the side for the salad, which was not, no lardon in the brussel sprouts, which was not. This too for the kitchen staff. Simple requests. We are NOT in the habit of asking and holding up mealtime for everyone, when more than one mistake is made. Fish chowder: The base was very good, the fish, suppose to be seafood chowder, but nothing else in it. The fish was overcooked in the chowder, the fish had fallen completely apart into the base as mush, too bad this was a near miss on what could have been the best part of the lunch. The portion very small. Shrimp scampi : $32. should be amazing, if not loaded with shrimp, not. With all these, "I'm sorry" responses on yelp, it seems management has no intention of moving forward on addressing the food and that's how an eatery becomes too comfortable and complacent. Relying on some positive reviews and ignoring the glaring ones that keep mentioning the same type of issues. Two stars for the view and drink. Won't be back. read more

We tried to make a reservation for Frisbee Wharf and the reservations were disappearing as I spoke with the hostess. She convinced me to dine on the deck at the Bistro -- the sister restaurant. Unfortunately, the table was in full sun but we found a great spot at the bar. Our bartender was helpful and friendly. The hostess/main server was not. She couldn't crack a smile and plunked food down at the table and didn't provide silverware. We loved the fresh oysters and our drinks. It took forever for our main course to arrive and the bread pudding arrived cold (should be warm). Overall, you come for the view. Food is overpriced (wouldn't pay $45 for a 4oz lobster roll). Stopped in for a mid-afternoon lunch for the very first time and wow. I've loved this location on the water through its various iterations for many years, but what they've done here is transform the interior and offerings into a getaway for the senses from the inside out. Gorgeous warm interior on the ground level, doubly matched by the light and airy setting at the third-floor bar--with a whole new view of that gorgeous cove. Sunlight twinkling off the water only makes the spicy, peppery bloody mary taste better. The mussels enjoy a nice kick of chorizo with soothing bites of cilantro over a tomato broth with wood-grilled toast (though the mussels themselves were so large, they were a bit much for my taste; those who like 'em large will say wow!). The beet salad was unique on the Seacoast, and the non -alcoholic beverage choices included a ginger/cranberry concoction that was as gorgeous to look at as it was to taste! Finally, a chocolate soufflé with salted caramel served as a fun unexpected treat (though the texture wasn't my favorite; in the end a good old-fashioned flourless chocolate cake might have been more memorable). Overall, the setting, service, view, and unique array of choices made for an unexpectedly decadent and delicious afternoon. We'll be back for sure! read more

We ended up checking this place out after we couldn't get seated at the outdoor venue for lunch. We took a couple of seats at the bar in the ski club upstairs. All I can say is what a view. My drink Spring Bounty was wonderful, service was very good. Our food was good but the menu was very limited. I ended up with the crab salad which was very good and we shared the bread pudding. Bartended did mention they are getting ready to change to a summer menu. I like the fact this place changes seasonally so we will go back for the view and ambiance alone. Our group had a fantastic lunch experience celebrating our colleague's retirement. Donna and her friendly, professional staff treated our group extremely well. The food was delicious; we started off with plates of mussels, bang shrimp, and Brussel sprouts. Everyone order something different but my Lobster roll was absolutely yummy! The views are impeccable, the cocktails are light and refreshing (seriously the Anchor Light was too good to be true) and don't get me started on the food. The cauliflower had us licking the plate, the Brussels sprouts were perfectly cooked through while still being extra crispy. Besides the freshness of the lobster, what truly made it so good were the double fried French fries on the side. I recommend sharing just so you can try as many of the delicious things on the menu as you can. We selected four appetisers to share between three people, plus two lobster rolls, and it was perfect amount of food for us.
