It was a busy day at the Wharf & Bistro Du Jour accommodated us within 20 mins of waiting for a table of four. The server was friendly, helpful & provided answers to our questions. I ordered the steak frites which the chef preferred medium rare but I ordered medium instead. The steak frites (7-9 oz steak based on size) came with a salad on the plate. Overall, I think the steak and fries were okay to me. The food wasn't flavorful or seasoned well. The steak had some localized areas of medium rare and was rubbery at those spots. The fries were plain but the salad was good with the sauce that was mixed with it. I personally think this is a good spot for breakfast/ brunch & getting dessert items. Happened on this spot while walking the wharf. French bistro with welcoming presence. They had no reservations online so we went in and they were happy to accommodate our party of 6. We started with some cocktails to kick off brunch and a bottle of French champagne. We opted for the quiche with classic ham and Swiss paired with a lightly dressed salad. Two people opted for the burger American which was actually quite good served with pomme frites and a white mayo based sauce. One person had the French onion soup which came out hot and pretty with cheese bubbling over. One had the Niçoise salad which came out like a work of art with perfectly placed tuna , eggs and fresh greens. Lastly one had the mussels which also were fresh and very good in a savory broth of butter , herbs , sage very good. The service was also good. The reason for not having 5 stars is the food wasn't all hot. It also came from the kitchen in different stages which is harder with a group to enjoy. I would like to rate BdJ higher and thought about 4 stars, but it seems like it's still figuring things out. Breakfast is nice, the pastries are delicious, but dinner was not so great. Had a salad with a very watery egg, and disappointing wine. One thing I'd suggest would be to not store your wine this way (in the photo). If you're opening bottles, and recorking them to open again the next day, they're not going to taste the way they should. Invest in a better preservation system or just open new bottles of wine; the ones you're serving aren't that expensive. This is why the wine you're selling tastes subpar. The staff sometimes seems flustered or not super efficient, but they're always very nice. read more

Bistro Du Jour knocks it out of the park at offering an exceptionally pleasant place to sit and enjoy a meal/drink. It's decorated to look exactly liked the outdoor seating at a bistro or cafe in Paris or Nice, but with a little more room for your table. It's very comfortable. And it's right by the Potomac so you have nice views of water. While we went in the early afternoon, my wife and I took advantage of their offering breakfast foods until three on weekends and some holidays to get breakfast foods. We went halvsies on an order of pain perdu (i.e. French toast) and of their omelette with zucchini and goat cheese (which they always offer all day). They were both pretty good. The French toast is advertised as having Chantilly cream and blueberry compote, and they delivered excellently on both. The cream was tasty and plentiful. The "compote" was heavy on full, sweet, ripe berries. The omelette came with lightly fried fingerling potatoes, and I was skeptical that they'd be good when we ordered (because we've all had weak breakfast potatoes), but they were everything you'd want them to be. The service was quick and friendly. They have a pretty solid cocktail menu. I got the "Champs Elysées" (an airy cocktail with a cognac, chartreuse, lemon, and angostura bitters) and my wife got the "air mail" (a rum drink with lemon and honey). They were both quite tasty. They serve La Columbe coffee, and they make a mean latte. Based on the ambiance and service, I might've given BdJ five stars, but I'm actively trying to avoid grade inflation at the high end of Yelp reviews. We went in the afternoon on Labor Day, after I noticed they were hit with heavy volume over the weekend for DC JazzFest, and on the heels of COVID where there was a lot of guesswork for businesses about what to expect for customer numbers (would they go back to prepandemic levels, be more like last year, surge from people who missed restaurants, or be in between?) but, when we went, they were out of an ingredient for the first cocktail I ordered, had a wait to make a batch of my replacement order, and were out of all pastries and several other items on the dessert menu. But, when I return some other day, I might upgrade their rating. The overall experience was excellent. read more

I'm a but conflicted as I write this. Everything about this place was decent. The food was decent, but inconsistent. My salmon was delicious, but ratatouille was a bit bland and the side salad was extremely salty. My server was inattentive to me much of the evening and the wait time was long for my liking. It's a cute enough place inside, but I think this place is more of a cafe and breakfast spot than a dinner spot. I wanted the creme brûlée for dessert, but I was told they were out. After a long day exploring D.C., that's not what I wanted to hear. Finally, there's only one individual bathroom, so expect a line of 5 or 6 people standing around while you enjoy your food. Just an overall solid French-American restaurant. The menu may be a bit limited compared to actual French restaurants in DC. We had puff cheese, salmon, and Americain burger, all were good. Can't complain. The drink staff who poured drinks were great. Everything was ordered by phone. When we left, no one was saying thank you even though the servers were all gathering by the hostess. We had a date night here recently and having had food before at Succotash and Gatsby, I was excited to try this place. Especially since the desserts are done by Mah-Ze-Dar. The interior is kinda smallish, but there is ample outdoor seating (which must have been nice in the summer time) We were promptly seated but there isn't much room for privacy, it all felt kind of squished. Food was great. I tried a foie Gras macaron which was delicious. We also each got a French onion soup which hit the spot on a cool fall night. For my main I got the steak frites which unfortunately I had to send back as I had asked for medium and it was pretty rare. They got that fixed in no time so it was tender and yummy when I finally got to eat it. My boyfriend's nicoise salad was also a nice light meal for him which he thoroughly enjoyed. Now they were out of dessert for a lot of the items and I take a star away for that. If you are offering dinner service you can't be out of dessert items by 7pm. All in all though I enjoyed our dining experience. They take reservations for a party of six (which can be harder than you think) and the prices are not outrageous. When we arrived we had great service and a lovely meal, reminiscent of a Parisian cafe. Our server had most of the outside and some tables inside, but she was still attentive and sweet. The vibes were giving French Cafe (as it should). We sat outside, but we were warm and toasty because of the ample heaters. The food was so good, that I forgot to get a photo. My whole table (6 people and a baby) ordered the Américano Breakfast. I also ordered my son the best turkey and guyere crossiant (and probably the only) I've ever had. It was crunchy on the outside but soft and full of cheese and turkey on the inside. I'm a huge fan of a simple, yet delicious breakfast and this restaurant DELIVERED. Eggs perfectly cooked, the best crossiant you'll ever eat, crunchy yet soft potatoes, and thick bacon; what more can you ask for. The only thing I can say was the bacon is not as crispy as regular bacon, but if you've ever baked thick bacon until it's right before crispy then you'll like the bacon here. Overall: Solid breakfast option at the Wharf - highly recommend that you make a reservation, as every table was booked when we arrived a few minutes before 10. Tastiness: We all enjoyed our meals - 3 of us ordered the oeufs sur la plat since it was the tastiest sounding option on the menu (very good indeed), and one had the Americaine - she liked. The restaurant was not too creative in accommodating a gluten-free request, however they did deliver (which is the most important part). Everyone was satisfied with their meals, including the kids who enjoyed some croissants, cinnamon buns, and a cheese and herb scone (try this, I think you will enjoy it, as it's not dry like most scones). Service: Attentive servers and bussers and the kitchecken turned around our order pretty quickly (15 mins for 4 dishes). I like that they brought out the pastries and coffees first and much later the main order - there seems to be a trend where everything arrives at all once, and I was pleasantly surprised to see this restaurant do things the right way. Ambiance: Our party of 4 adults and 2 children was seated in the a covered patio which has a strong Parisian cafe vibe. It was very pleasant and quiet with music which was at the perfect volume so that it complemented the ambiance and did not distract. Cleanliness: Very clean and neat throughout. We had the MOST phenomenal brunch here two days in a row! The service was amazing with cheerful and helpful waiters on both days. This spot was easy walking from our hotel on the wharf, and we tried the American style eggs, the eggs with mushrooms, smoked salmon and brioche French toast all over a two day period.
