There aren't many places in San Diego that serve Japanese Italian food so I'm glad I can go to Bistro Kaz! * The crab cream croquette was crispy and delicate but also rich but not too dense. * The okonimiyaki was unique in that it had cheese, which we really enjoyed! It was a bit too doughy for me, but I could still feel the cabbage at least. * The pastas were cooked really well. For the tuna and tomato pasta, it wasn't very spicy (but Japanese food isn't that spicy anyways haha). Though the sauce was mild at first, the flavor deepened the more I kept eating. The Neapolitan pasta felt like a upscale version of Jollibee spaghetti in the best way! The sauce was addicting in its own way. I stumbled upon this restaurant while doing some research on beli for Japanese-Italian fusion spots, and I instantly knew that it would be right up my alley. I loveeee Japanese-Italian fusion food. To start, the restaurant was so cute. Although it had limited seating, it was extremely cozy and mellow. After some heavy contemplation, we decided on the truffle pizza and creamy sea urchin pasta. The truffle pizza came out first and it was SO good to say the least. It tasted very creamy and buttery, but it was definitely on the heavier side. I wish they added corn to it--I feel like that could be a nice addition. Shortly after, we were then served with the pasta. First, it looked soooo appetizing. The plating was phenomenal! The pasta itself was very creamy but not greasy at all. It also did not taste overlyyy fishy. Instead, the seaweed paired very well with the urchin & roe. This isn't your classic hayashi sauce, however, being a rich umami tomato base filed with onions, carrots, and sweet-and-sour soaked bamboo shoots. It's a lovely mix, and frankly, it's worth trying. Comes with some red pickled radishes to change it up on the flavor every now and then. Definite recommend. House salad. No extra charge. All green leaf lettuce in a light vinaigrette. I absolutely love this restaurant! The crossover between Italian and Japanese is so good and they do it so well. We ordered a Unagi Eel Pizza to share and tried the Crab Meat in Creamy Tomato Sauce Pasta. Both was divine and they give you a good portion! The pizza was very fresh and had a generous number of unagi on there with perfect amount of eel sauce, which paired perfectly with the cheese. The pasta held a very good balance between being heavy and refreshing, which worked well with the huge crab chunks and crunchy asparagus. It's a very small restaurant that's on the quieter side. My boyfriend had the chicken doria, which to us was tasty, but didn't quite compare to the other two dishes. To me it was a little lacking in texture, where I feel like it would've benefited from a little crunch, but honestly still very comforting and flavorful. Overall the only reason for a 3 star was the ambiance and curry, it would have been maybe a 1 or 2. Food was not anything worth while to fight the parking traffic for. Waiter messed up on our order, even though it was repeated 3 times and my daughter even pointed to the item on the menu and the waiter supposedly 'looked' at it. He even tried to correct us, even though my husband and I heard her right order all 3 times! SMH. Pizza had more cheese than anything else. We ordered the Unagi/Eel pizza and I swear it was just melted cheese with a few small eel pieces and a gang of unagi sauce. If you just wanted flavored melted cheese, order this. I got the Uni pasta at $36 MP. Never again. It was very al dente pasta, water and a few small pieces of Uni. It was so extremely watered down and flavorless. I absolutely do not recommend. This place is a small and intimate restaurant. There was only one server, so he was the only person that we interacted with for the whole time. He was quick and efficient. We ordered the: -Unagi Eel Pizza ($20): This was delicious, and the first time I've had unagi on pizza. The unagi was cooked perfectly, and all of the flavors blended together perfectly. It was the first to arrive on our table, and we all finished it before trying anything else. -Spaghetti with Crab Meat in Creamy Tomato Sauce ($18): This was actually quite filling, and came with two pieces of garlic bread. There was a good amount of crab meat and tomato. -Fried Chicken Curry ($18): The chicken was fried well, and there was a good portion especially for the cost. -Black Squid Ink Paella ($32): It had a nice assortment of seafood. The plate was pretty small though, so it seems a bit pricy. -Miso Marinated Salmon Belly ($20): The flavor of the miso was good, but the salmon was a bit dry. Overall, we enjoyed the dishes that we got. At the end of our meal, the four of us were all full, and even took home some leftovers. They have two lunch combo options - one with pasta and one without. You get to choose one main dish and it comes with salad, soup and a drink. I ordered Cod Roe and Salmon Roe with butter soy sauce. The flavor was good and pasta was the right texture. However it was a bit too dry for my taste. I also tried squid ink pasta which was tasty. The chicken doria was creamy and cheesy. After our main meal, we ordered tiramisu, green tea Mont Blanc cake and pistachio ice cream. I think tiramisu needs a bit more espresso. This Italian Japanese place is one of my favorite places in San Diego. If you've ever lived in Japan or had a chance to enjoy the "Itameshi" cuisine, you'll love this place. They have a large menu including things like omelette rice, a large variety of pasta dishes, and my personal favorite, Doria. For those who aren't familiar with it, Doria is a kind of casserole dish that has rice, a light cream sauce, meat of some sort (i.e. seafood), and a baked layer of cheese on top. It is comfort food at its finest. We have been here several times and the restaurant has a cozy interior with a faux fireplace up front and a friendly waitress who always seems to be there at lunchtime (she has been our server every time we've visited). The lunch specials include a drink (Orange juice is our usual choice), a soup and salad along with your main entree. Prices are reasonable and it is very clear that great care went into each dish and how it was presented. If you like any kind of casserole (think Baked Mac and Cheese, Potatoes au gratin, lasagna, etc), you must try the Doria. You will not regret it. I was first introduced to Doria when living in Japan and am always looking for places that make it. ----TL;DR---- PROS: think Japanese-Italian comfort food and you have found the place to get it. The service and restaurant are wonderful, prices are reasonable and the lunch special includes so much. CONS: parking could be tight sometimes but usually there are open spots BOTTOM LINE: one of my favorite places in San Diego for Japanese-Italian food that is authentic to Japan and how they adapted it to the Japanese palate. There was a large parking lot of front with additional spots in the back if that was full. There were two small tables out front but majority of the seats were inside and at the bar. Our server was great albeit the food took a while to come out. =ORDERED= *Ceviche: a strange option but I was stunned by the tastiness and portion size. This appetizer was easily shared between two and the seafood was vibrant. There were big chunks of octopus, shrimp, mango, tomato and cucumber covered in a sweet and acidic lime marinade. There was a cup of Japanese mayo on the side in which I'm going to start adding to my ceviche from now on. *Uni and Salmon Roe Pasta: priced at market price, hence $36 during my visit. The pasta was nicely al dente. I wished more sauce came with the amount of noodles but it was very flavorful. The uni flavor was concentrated and prominent. Although this has to be one of the more expensive options in SD, this dish was executed the best of those I've tried. Each dish tasted great and was well developed. It's a small and unassuming restaurant located on the busy Convoy Street and I probably would not have noticed it browsing around for places to eat. I had such a unique experience at Bistro Kaz, a Japanese-Italian fusion spot is hard to find even in a big city like San Diego. We arrived at around 8pm after struggling to find a spot in the packed plaza parking lot, and were promptly seated by a singular server handling the intimately-spaced restaurant. Food was incredible and made me miss the Western-style Japanese food I had when I visited Japan. For appetizers, we ordered a calamari fritto with fried shishito peppers complimented by a cocktail and tartar sauce. It was crispy and freshly-made, and the seasoning was light but worked with the heavy sauces. The shishito peppers were delightful, although I do wish there were more pieces of calamari. We ordered an unagi eel pizza to share, and it was my favorite dish of the night! Loaded with cheese, unagi pieces, nori strips, and unagi sauce, it somehow worked altogether. Although it was an unexpected combo, this pizza was all sorts of sweet and savory, and the edges were crisp to perfection. We ordered a seafood doria, which is essentially baked rice with sauce and cheese on top, reminiscent to the Hong Kong-style casseroles I grew up eating. It was creamy and very flavorful which was surprising for white sauces. The doria itself is actually quite small, but it did fill us up! Our last dish was the crab meat pasta with creamy tomato sauce. Like many of the other reviews, the pasta sauce itself is on the watery side, which is similar to the pasta dishes that I had when I was in Japan. The pasta was very good, and the flavor is very mellow. Although it was my least favorite out of the four we ordered, I do appreciate how much crab meat they put! I wish this place didn't advertise as Italian. Yes yes I know it's Japanese and Italian but the Italian part is not delivered. At all, and it's almost deceiving. Came here as a party of 5, checked out the menu, looked for the Italian food on the menu (my teen yelper wanted Italian and this was the only place that popped up in the area) (I know I know it's Kearny Mesa but our car was getting serviced at the dealership) Ok, so they had these 3 course meals for $20 and were like oh cool! A salad, a soup, your entre and a drink. The first flaw that I saw was that on the salad and soup only the house salad and the house soup were included in the price. The other salads and soups cost extra from $1-$3. The house soup was egg drop (not even close to Italian) and the house salad was some leafy greens with a normal Japanese salad dressing. Some people in our party ordered the Cesar salad, which was NOT a traditional Cesar salad, and I can't even speak on the other soups because no. We ordered form a mix of chicken curry, pork curry, shrimp, a mushroom pasta, and some Italian inspired dish. I forgot what it was called. All the drinks were some variation of teas, none Italian. Some were included in the price, some weren't. First round, the salads. The lady brought them all together ok, cool, except she just placed them in the middle of the table, after having a conversation we didn't exactly remember who ordered which one BUT nonetheless I found it very unconventional that she just placed them in one spot instead of taking them around the table to each person. Then comes the soup, SHE DID THE SAME THING! I been to Japanese restaurants! It's not a thing. Why she just dropped everything in the middle of the table, was crazy! Then comes the big disappointment. The curry plates were very underwhelming. Little tiny protein portions, an over excessive amount of rice with curry. The shrimp? 3 tempura pieces. 3??? As a meal? For an adult. This was not the kids menu ok. That's not even one serving of shrimp. The pork was tough and we had no cutting utensils. The mushroom spaghetti wasnt even regular mushrooms but some Asian mushrooms, that were hard to chew, the sauce wasn't even a mushroom flavor but fishy yet there was no fish on the dish at all. Mind you; the lady did the same thing where she just dropped all the plates in one side of the table like "here you go, you figure it out" One of my sons felt very uncomfortable because the lady just stood behind the bar just starting at people. No friendliness, no smile. Nothing. Just staring. Then another one pointed out that the menu had a part that read "prices subject to change without notice" ok but isn't that false advertisement? I don't know. Honestly we should've just left but it was one of those of "we're already here, how bad can it be?" It was bad. It was really bad. I saw a party of 6 inside and by looks of the tables, they could probably accommodate a party of up to 8. Outside, there were three 2-person tables. It looked like our server was the only one working the whole floor but still, she was very nice and attentive. The pizza and salmon belly came by quickly but the pastas took maybe 10-15 min longer. Food: -Unagi Eel Pizza ($20): eight square slices-- perfect to share! I'd get this again. -Miso Marinated Salmon Belly ($20): served with rice. My husband says he enjoyed this plate and would get this again next time. -Creamy Sea Urchin with Salmon Roe Pasta ($36 for market price): Served with garlic bread. Clean taste, felt nice drinking it first thing in the afternoon. Could drink the soup before or after the meal! The chicken doria was super rich and hearty, the cheese sauce the used is the same as the pizza so it was really delicious. Tender juicy chicken over rice baked with cheese sauce. Absolutely delectable. But the highlight was the corn soup! Rich but not that heavy, a bit sweet and savory. A great balance. Really liked this corn soup! Overall, the ambiance of this place is super nice, lowkey, and mellow. But still very lively! This bistro always reminds me of the cool places in Tokyo: small number of tables, jazz, nouveau cuisine (but, with the added bonus of not hitting my legs on small tables, like I do in Japan.) If you haven't had a Doria before, it is the ultimate comfort food. Rice, a classic French white sauce, and delicious bits of goodness, all baked together with a cheese top. What is not to love? Cold mentaiko pasta on a summer day is heaven. You will not be disappointed. The service is always very polite, attentive without being intrusive, and lovely. read more

The food at Bistro Kaz was great, but the service was disappointing. We came to Bistro Kaz for a special night--our last dinner out before our baby arrives. I'm 38 weeks pregnant, and even though the restaurant was nearly empty, we were told we couldn't sit at a booth and were directed to a tiny table in the center (they have 8-10 booth seats and the tiny table). The server was inflexible, short, and dismissive, which was frustrating given my condition and the empty space. Great food, but the service needs more empathy and flexibility. read more

We were looking for an Italian Japanese fusion so Bistro Kaz popped up. Small little restaurant with only a few tables, so it's probably in your best interest to get there early. We got there right when they opened so we sat immediately. FAVE ITEMS: - Unagi Pizza: love this, get this. The perfect amount of sweetness with the eel sauce and crispiness, and the cheese was divine on this. HIGHLY recommend. - Crab Pasta: definitely get this too. Good chunks of crab with a creamy base. Love! * Also tried Uni Pasta, would say less highly recommended since it's more expensive and you barely get any uni. The crab is more worth. SERVICE: this was where I docked a point. It was a little strange -- we asked if we could get slightly more tomato sauce and they said we would be charged A LOT more. But there was barely any to begin with. PARKING: lots of parking as this is in a plaza on Convoy. PRICE: decent considering what you are paying for. About $15-20 usually per dish.
