Nestled away in the Westchase area lies Bistro Le Cep- imagine neighborhood French bistro meets country-style home cooking and it cannot get better than this. I had a company dinner holiday party here years ago and had amazing service and food. Deciding to dine here for HRW, I expected nothing short of amazing. I was early for my RSVP and waited at the bar for my dinner date to arrive. Both the bartender and manager were cordial. The manager even helped me pick out my wine since I was indecisive with the options. I felt very welcomed upon entering the restaurant and while I sat at the bar (which by the way was right next to the kitchen, and the enticing aroma of food was beckoning me or was that the wine talking...) After being seated, we opted for the HRW menu. Complimentary crostinis with butter and pate were brought to our table. The pate was sheer and utter perfection- by far one of the best I've ever had in a restaurant. Then, magically, a fresh basket of complimentary specialty breads arrived, from which we made selections. I did not mind having these little treats while waiting for our food. Seared scallop appetizer: This was only ONE pan seared diver scallop served with tossed spinach and a sweet and sour saffron gastrique. The scallop was tender, moist, sweet, buttery and melted in my mouth. I was left wanting a couple more! Intermezzo: A fruit sorbet (mango sorbet with a slice of strawberry) with champagne was brought out as a palate cleanser- a palate pleasing treat! Poisson du jour entree: Pan-roasted red snapper in lemon butter sauce with capers, served with grilled corn on the cob, potatoes, and broccoli. Again, the fish was cooked just right and tenderly flaked away with the gentle touch of a fork. The grilled vegetables still had their bright colors and a nice crunch factor (just how I like it because I hate eating soggy veggies). Mousse au chocolat: The chocolate mousse dessert ended dinner on a positive note- it was neither too sweet nor rich and complemented the strawberry slice and chocolate candy garnishes. Creme brûlée: One spoonful of this dessert was a decadent combination of caramel (from the top layer caramelization), smooth, creamy, and rich flavors with a custard-like texture. It was so good that I wanted to lick the ramekin clean! Overall, our HRW experience was indeed outstanding, with attentive service throughout dinner. The staff were very professional and welcoming, tending to our dining needs in a quick manner, without being too obtrusive. All of the food was exceptional, as expected. I have to admit that I have only ever been here at lunchtimes - but every time I have really enjoyed it. I am thinking that this little restaurant is about as close it gets to "authentic French" in Houston. It is a direct descendant of a fabulous restaurant (also in the Memorial Area) that I used to frequent when I lived here in the 1980's "Rotisserie for Beef and Bird". It is my understanding from a close gourmet friend that the owner of Beef and Bird scaled back to a smaller venue in preparation for retirement and took his skill and chef with him. As I recently posted (pic's) they always have lunch specials and they are ALWAYS worth considering. Yesterday it was wild boar with mushrooms, wild rice and fresh asparagus, I took the house salad with that and the French breads and butter keep coming! All for $14.95, add a nice glass of red wine with that and it really does not get much better. Of course all the pickings on the menu look good (I wandered from the lunch special occasionally - and can heartily recommend the calf's liver entrée - yum!!! Although I haven't tried for dinner yet, but we plan to and I am 100% confident that it will be great!! read more

We've been here before, and we came here again for Houston Restaurant Week but only 2 of the 4 of us ending up eating off that menu, so we got to experience both the HRW menu and their regular menu. We had made a reservation and were seated right away but it took quite a while to get drinks and even menus. We had to ask for the HRW menus twice. Then we heard another table ask for the lobster and clam bake menu, so we asked for that too. We were overwhelmed with menus, but I wish we would have just had all our options from the beginning. It took a long time to get the waiter to our table, maybe 15-20 minutes before we could order. The atmosphere is a bit dreary. The building itself is old and ugly, the interior is in desperate need of an update. The lights above us had a pink to red hue, so everything around us was pinkish-red. It was a strange color to dine under. It just felt like grandma's country cabin instead of a French countryside restaurant. I got the lobster and clam bake. They currently have it every Friday. They fly lobster in from New England and serve them until they run out. It was $40 for a salad, the lobster special (lobster, clams, shrimp, potatoes, corn - see photo), and a dessert. It was definitely worth it as far as the money. The lobster was very good, the shrimp were cold, and everything else was good. I'd get the lobster special again. The HRW menu was a decent deal as far as the money goes, but not completely spot on as far as food. The flounder was dry and lacking flavor. The clam chowder was fine. The petite lamb chops were very good. The desserts were all over the place. The cassata ice cream cake was delicious and I would absolutely get that again. The peach tart was not very good and I left most of mine uneaten. Overall the food was good, but with some low lights. The building and ambiance is frumpy and needs an update. The service was spread too thin and was not prompt enough when we were seated. I'd maybe go back, but I hope they dust the place off and get a fresh coat of paint and some new decor. read more

We went for calves liver which is an excellent choice in a very excellent French restaurant. We were not disappointed. The service is very attentive and the ambiance is quite Ala Francaise. I had cherries with Kirsch for dessert and the rest of our party each had a different classic French dessert. Pretty disappointed in the food here. We started out with the mussels and they were quite possible the worst mussels I've ever had. The flavor was lacking and the mussels tasted really rubbery and not fresh. I got the Cod en Papillote for my entree and again flavor was really lacking. The fish was nicely cooked but I had to ask for extra lemons to get some sort of flavor. Also the crab that came with the dish had lots of shells in it so that was not appetizing. My husband got the wild boar and liked his dish. I don't eat red meat so I did not try it. read more

We have been avid customers of Bistro Le Cep for at least 20 years, so we are saddened by the recent massive increase in their prices. We all know that restaurant prices have increased out of all relationship to food prices, but Bistro Le Cep's price increases - on the order of 50% - have exceeded other excellent French bistros in the Houston area in higher rent areas, such as Etoile Cuisine in the Galleria and Bistro 555 (successor to Bistro Provence) in Memorial. We hope Bistro Le Cep will return to their earlier business plan of quality French food at a reasonable price, but until they do, we will not be back. read more

Came for Houston Restaurant Weeks, so I'm not certain if this is a typical experience. For our first course my husband ordered the wild boar with (white button) mushroom and plum sauce. The sauce tasted overwhelmingly like bottled teriyaki and the lighting was so PINK (see the pictures) that we wouldn't have been able to identify what kind of meat he was served if it hadn't been stated on the menu. I ordered the escargot which was the only decent thing, along with the wine, we had throughout our meal. For the second course, my husband regrettably ordered the Chilean sea bass which was undercooked and served with unseasoned sides that looked like they came from a school cafeteria line. They couldn't be bothered to peel the carrots before boiling them. My choice of the bistro trio of lamb chop, duck breast, and bacon wrapped quail legs was marginally better. The chop and quail leg were nice, but the duck breast should have been rendered more, because it was rather chewy. Again, the vegetables were awful. Let's talk briefly about plating. 1987 called and they want their parsley sprig and rosemary twig back. Finally, dessert. A perfect tarte tatin is a thing of beauty, but this was a nightmare. It was just a congealed mess that resembled a slice of upside down apple pie. The key lime pie with a squirt of reddi-wip on top was a joke. Both plates prominently featured a giant sprig of mint that engulfed the table. Our waiter was polite, attentive, the only reason this restaurant is getting any stars for the review, and should probably find a better place to work. Will not be back again. read more

Bistro Le Cep is a French style restaurant with roomy restrooms. As you make your way to relieve yourself, you first pass through a door labeled restrooms. Once you've crossed in you'll find your self in a limbo space with the men's room dead ahead and the women's room to your immediate left. If there is a line you can wait in this area and look at our self in the large mirror on the wall. The men's room features a single urinal and signal stall. The lock on the stall works and he urinal provides more than adequate privacy. To wash up you can choose from one of two sinks. And to dry your hands there is a an automatic towel dispense. Thank god. I really hate hand blowers. For a classy French joint like this I'm so glad the didn't screw their customers over by forcing them to use those disgusting things. It would be very un French of them. The wait staff was very attentive and the food is far superior than the exterior let's on. read more

I found this place by accident as I had to kill some time being in this area. I was sitting at their bar and besides a good selection of wine their menu delivers the French aspect of dining to Houston's restaurant landscape. Their menu is written in both French and English. I was having the Fresh Mussels (USD 10.95) and the dessert can be seen in the attached picture. It's definitely worth going if you want to broaden your dining experience. We went for Houston Restaurant Weeks and the food and service were good. When you arrive you get crostinis with chicken liver mousse, nice touch. Escargot was delicious in garlic butter. The French Onion soup had a rich and dark broth and of course the crouton and cheese topping. It was a tad on the salty side but very tasty. They bring you slices of baguette during the appetizers, one at a time . But you can have as many slices as you like, you just have to ask for them. My Duck a l'orange entree was a large 12 oz portion (meaning half a duck) and the sauce really makes the dish. The duck was on the dry side but with the sauce it was delicious. The sides were lentils (a bit undercooked) and braised cabbage (very yummy). My husband got the grilled lamb chops which were cooked to a perfect medium rare and was paired with a green peppercorn sauce. Our dessert were also good, the tart tartin was the best of the three. The apples were cooked perfectly. The creme brulee was smooth and creamy. The chocolate mousse was just ok, very lite and airy maybe even too lite. Overall the food was good, you should expect traditional French cuisine, no fluff. The wine by the glass prices were great, many options for under $10. The decor feels like a Swiss Chalet, in the Alps. My only complaint was how warm it was inside, we were slightly sweating. read more

French Country Cooking. The decor is cozy and festive. Some may say slightly cramped but it's about how many people you can seat right? When you walk in you will see statutes of roosters and walls of wine. When you seat there is a free order of reiette with break crackers. The service is prompt and friendly. Often times there are two assistants per waiter. It is french cuisine, oui? When I go I always get the escargot! My favorite part of this dish is the garlic butter the escargot is soaking in. Make sure you get extra bread from the waiter. 3 Little know that many of the items on the Le Cep menu come from the old Beef & Bird when it was still around. Same chef! One of my favorite picks I get from the Beef & Bird that carried over to Le Cep is the Wild Boar Medallions served over wild rice. Another favorite of mine is the Steak au Financiere - fillet wrapped in bacon served with a vegetable du jour & mash potatoes. Dessert? Although I shouldn't on so many levels I get the Chocolate Dumplings a la mode...it is AWESOME! Alas, I can never finish. It always conquers me. Ambiance depends on what time of day you go there. Lunches are more business like while evenings are more intimate. Sundays for brunch are more family oriented. Wine selection is extensive and reasonably priced! On the corner of the strip center with lots of parking. I had made a reservation for my moms birthday ahead of time thinking it might be a packed place, nope, there were barely any customers on a Saturday night! We sat down and waited...and waited..and had to ask for the menus. Where's the service? We finally were asked and ordered a bottle of wine. You can tell who were their "regular/VIP" customers as the manager frequented their tables often and not to any other guests in the restaurant. They give some bread with a scoop of pate as you wait for the food. We were a table of 5 and ordered a few bowls of French onion soup and the escargot to begin. The soup was real cheesy, which I like, but the soup flavoring was lacking and a bit weird. We've had much better French onion soup at even some regular places. Escargot didn't actually come with the shells, but rather were 6 small pieces already taken out soaked in a herb garlic butter. My mom chose the pot roast rabbit that was highly recommended and it was dry, no flavor, and sadly displeasing for the birthday girl. My dad got the catch of the day which was the red snapper with lemon butter sauce with vegetables and for a person who loves fish, he didn't even like it. The other dishes we tried were the angel hair pasta with crab cakes, which was just ok as the pasta was just regular and our other dish was the cod wrapped in parchment paper which was also not a standout. I decided on the half duck and was also dry and nobody at the table wanted more than a bite of it. The best thing on that dish turned out to be the cabbage :/ All I can say is, the best thing that night was the creme brûlée. Overall, it's too bad I didn't have the experience some raved about, especially for a special event. The food was under-raving and service was poor (we had to ask for our water refills!). I spent over $200 and expected way more, I'd recommend taking your money elsewhere where you can get much better food and experience. read more

Provence and French Country food is absolutely wonderful- Bistro Le Cep takes me back to my visits throughout France, each region completely different with their own stand out food of choice. I absolutely miss Rotisserie for Beef & Bird, but am quite pleased to see a French Cuisine Restaurant in Houston. Joe Manke is a wonderful chef who's cuisine I have grown up with and love still now. Inexpensive and absolutely great quality- it really does have the French mentality. This is a must try cozy little restaurant that makes you feel at home with a touch of luxury. For me, the French onion soup was rather subpar, the steak was quite tasty; cooked to a nice medium rare. My better half and I decided to try this place since we haven't done french in awhile. No regrets! The food: we started off with the escargot which had all the flavor but the texture was way softer than I expected, which is not a good thing for me. They also gave us complementary chicken liver pate with toasted french bread which was delicious. I had the Chilean sea bass which was absolutely fantastic! Nice crisp thin launder of breading sitting on top of some of the best spinach I ever had! The service: water was always filled. We have been coming to this fine restaurant for almost two decades and have yet to fine a better place than this. We enjoy the ambiance, the excellent service, the superb menu offerings, the quality of their offerings, and the excellent value. The manager always greets us with a smile and by name when we go there. We have gone there for birthdays, marriage celebrations and this is the place we take all of our visitors including children and grandchildren. This is a quaint little place on the west side of Houston. It is in a tiny, unassuming building with a red facade. Once you are seated, they bring an interesting assortment of bread to the table, all delicious! My wife and I like to go there on special occasions, but the time is always right to have a nice french meal with a delicious bordeaux. We started off with some Escargots à la Bourguignonne, and some Pâté de Canard (Duck Pâté). They were both good, but not very filling. It's good the main course was yet to come! I had the succulent 11 oz. filet wrapped with bacon. This was served with pinot noir reduction creamed potatoes and asparagus, and my wife had the Bar à la Florentine. This consisted of a pan roasted fillet of Chilean Seabass that was topped with a light Velouté Sauce served on garlic leaf spinach and roasted potatoes. Both meals were excellent to the last bite! The best was yet to come! I would suffer through a mediocre meal just for the dessert. If you ever go here, YOU HAVE TO GET the Quenelle de Ganache au Chocolate! This is a chocolate dumpling, served with vanilla custard and ice cream. It is also TO DIE FOR!!!!! For any chocolate lovers out there, rush on over and dive right in. My neighbor introduced this wonderful restaurant to me. We had a weekday lunch, but we arrived slightly later than the lunch time to avoid the crowd. I had the chef's pasta creation, which was absolutely fantastic. The pasta and ingredients were fresh. My neighbor had the sandwich, which she loved it. Of course, we ended our lunch with a caramelized apple tart served with a small scoop of fresh vanilla ice cream. The dessert was fantastic. Will go back again to try the creme brûlée, which I heard is the recommended dessert. The service was excellent too. The waiters are very polite and the manager came by our table a couple of times to ask about us. They have Sunday set dinner that includes appetizer, entree, and a dessert for $28.95, which is a pretty good deal. You can pay more - $32.95 for steaks. Love the home made chicken liver pâté spread that came with the French bread when we sat down, the ambience is dim and cozy and intimate, very homey and comforting. The dim pink lighting inside definitely set the mood for the food, service was excellent, we didn't have to wait on anything and the waiter was always making sure we have everything we need. We ordered the catch of the day which was flounder with capers, unfortunately it didn't have much flavor and overall it was mediocre :/, but the orange duck was a dish well worth the money, had a Fragrant orange tang to it and very tender. This is my go to french restaurant and I've been several times since I used to live in Westchase. Most recently I came for the HRW menu, but it's not really all that special since they've already been offering a 3-course menu on Sunday evenings for years, for around the same price or less (either $29 or 33, depending on if you order a steak as your entrée). On my latest visit, we ordered one HRW menu and the bouillabaisse off of the regular menu. We chose the sliced 7oz of duck for the entree, the French onion soup which is superb for the app and the crème brulee as the dessert. All dishes were pretty awesome. If you've never been here, they tend you load you up with a lot of bread, whether it's complimentary toast at the start of the meal that comes with a small sample of their pate, or when a server comes around an gives out their softer French bread, or the bread being served with some of their entrees. If you keep eating all of the bread, you will be full long before the dessert ever arrives. Simply put, Bistro Le Cep is homey and serves good food with reasonable prices. Most of their entrees fall between $20-25 and come with small portions of sides which are generally very good too. read more

I had eaten here 3-4 times prior to this visit (Saturday night of Fathers' Day weekend) and thought this was an okay french restaurant - you can read that as i was willing to go there if invited, but would not suggest it myself. Sadly, that's no longer the case. Parking - 5 stars. Plenty of parking available. Service - 4 stars. We were a group of 14 at two tables (10 + 4); the waitstaff was quite attentive, but the smaller table got quicker service, such that they were finished about 30 minutes before the bigger table. Also, I'll note that they served complimentary chicken liver pate and toasted french bread (3 for the table of ten), and were asked for more, but never brought it. Food - 2 stars. I had escargot, bouillabaisse, chocolate mousse; my companion had the fathers' day special - escargot, veal chop, creme brulée. Now, sadly, there were several issues: 1) appetizers: escargot - in mine, there was a normal sized escargot in the center, a half-sized one at 9 o'clock, and the remaining 4 were "bits" (about pea-sized); his had roughly the equivalent of two normal escargot, divided into six spots, 3 of which had two bits. The butter, garlic, herb sauce was okay, but could have been better. Manager was informed, and just basically said they never get complaints, and I said, well, you should know about what's coming out of your kitchen, and fix it. He said he would take the escargot off the bill. They did not charge for mine, but failed to deduct the $10 off the $49.95 fathers' day special. 2) mains: a) the veal chop was very good. The veal was served with steamed carrots and broccoli, and a side of mashed potatoes. b) the bouillabaisse was mediocre. i) the soup base was severely lacking in any saffron flavor. It also had 2 bay leaves in the bowl, which I believe should be removed, in case someone doesn't know they should not eat them. The fish/shellfish was fresh, i believe there was one large shrimp, a cod filet and a flounder filet, maybe half a dozen mussels, a lonely scallop, and about 5 crab fingers. ii) Bouillabaisse is typically served with a few slices of bread or toast, covered in rouille, which is essentially a garlicky, saffron-y aioli or remoulade. It adds a lot to the experience, melding the flavors. This version was served with toasted garlic bread - not expected. When the manager asked how the bouillabaisse was, i just said "nice", because I didn't have it in me to have another discussion. c) other diners: i) duck a l'orange - dry and overcooked; sent back, got crab cakes instead, which were good. ii) fish of the day - flounder meuniere served with same sides listed above - was good. iii) coq au vin was good. 3) dessert - the chocolate mousse was pretty good; nice flavor and fairly airy, as it should be. but, i'd be hard-pressed to find any issue because, uh, chocolate. Now, the creme brulée was another story. As you walk in the restaurant, there's a table displaying the desserts. The creme brulée displayed was in a ramekin about 5 inches in diameter, and one inch thick. What was served was in a 2 inch diameter ramekin. He felt like that was a bait and switch. The comment was, "[My son] made better creme brulée when he was 15." There was some discussion on the way home about the experience, including the fact that the owner had previously operated another restaurant which had been great, and how disappointing this one was.
