Gluten Free Review +almost everything gluten free! This place is a true Canadian gluten free spot, almost everything gluten free, service was amazing, parking is across the street unless you find a spot near the entrance. Had the poutine, so good, also soup appetizer amazing and a pitcher of sangria, tasty. I'd go here every day if I lived close. Keep up the good work.

Great neighborhood bistro on the edge of the tourist area and popular with locals. Diverse menu with premium ingredients specializing in gluten-free options. Friendly staff (though it does get busy sometimes so be patient). Family friendly local pub. Enjoyed the duck confit salad.

I'm conflicted about this place. There were many positives but my food and drinks didn't wow me…read more The wife's dishes were better though, especially the amazing chicken. We almost didn't go because the automated reservation system claimed there were no tables until 9:00; way too late for us. But we stopped in anyway (our hotel was next door) and inquired and there were plenty of tables available. Weird. So we came at 6:00 and got a really nice - though very small - outside table; perfect for watching street activity on this warm evening. I started with onion soup. It was interesting how it was served: The bowl is brought with only the croutons and broiled cheese in it, and the waiter pours the liquid over it at the table. Is it better this way? I think I prefer the standard way but it was interesting. It was pretty good overall, a decent but not outstanding broth, not tinny-tasting or too salty, good onions (could have used more), and I liked the cheese which was browned and partially melted from its time under the broiler. My entree was the Hortus Burger: Local organic beef from Charlevoix, garlic mayonnaise, goat cheese, tomato, pepper, and green apple jam. Served with fries and a green salad. It was definitely different, and I liked it but didn't love it. The patty was unusually dense in texture and tasted salty, like the salt was worked into the patty itself. The tomato was fresh and I liked the apple jam. There was a lot of goat cheese; as much actually as the beef. This, along with the fact that the bun was rather firm, made it almost impossible to pick up and eat by hand - the cheese squeezed out and fell onto the plate - that I ended up using a knife and fork for most if it. The cheese added needed moisture though to balance the dense, dryish patty (even though it was cooked medium as I ordered). The salad was pre-dressed and very good. The fries were good too, crisp and browned but not dry. The portion was too much though and we took some home along with some of the wife's chicken. A bigger burger and fewer fries would be a better balance. Visiting the website I discovered the reason for the bun's firm texture, which didn't seem right for the burger: It was gluten-free, along with everything the restaurant serves. I understand some people can't tolerate gluten, but there's a reason wheat flour is king of grains: nothing makes better bread. I'm much more on board with their other commitments: to use only locally-sourced, organic ingredients wherever possible. Local? Very! Exploring the roof of the hotel where we stayed, I discovered their secret garden where they grow much of their produce, along with a beehive where their bees make the honey, far above the bustle of old Quebec. The wife's chicken was the star of the evening. Chicken breast, browned, sliced, and perfectly tender, served with roasted root vegetables and an amazing flavorful oily herb medley resembling chimichurri. We both agreed it was one of the best chicken dishes we've ever had. As for drinks, I didn't much like my cocktail, though it was pretty. Le Violet, made with gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, honey syrup, and white cranberry juice. Though it was served in a martini glass neat, it was disappointingly weak. Rather than risk disappointment again I switched to wine. But their wines by the glass are only described by the grape (Cabernet, Pinot, etc.) not by vintner. I expect better from a restaurant of the caliper Hortus aspires to be. As for desserts, my Pouding Chômeur (cake soaked in caramel sauce, maple ice cream) wasn't anything special but it was tasty enough. The real star was again the wife's dessert: their Signature Crème Brulée, honey-flavored with white chocolate and ginger. I'm not a huge fan of crème brulée but I could tell this was outstanding, with a pronounced honey flavor (though not much ginger) and a good crackable crust on top. All in all, though my food and drinks only rated 3 stars, the wife's dishes were exceptional, and along with the service and ambience, this rates a solid 4 stars. I'd come back and try something different next time.

Their menu emphasized local produce/meats and had a huge wine list too. I got the confit duck leg and a cider. The duck leg was tender and the roasted vegetables and mushrooms nicely complimented it. It came out steaming hot and nicely decorated. I really enjoyed the meal. I also saw on the menu that they served bison as well - they had a lot of different kinds of meat that I don't typically see at other restaurants. The prices may seem a bit high to some but I think it speaks to the restaurant's commitment to sustainable farming practices. Staff was nice and prompt. The window seating is so nice - especially as outside consists of historical buildings.

Great atmosphere (we opted for indoor seating since it was rather warm out), excellent service, and food that was easily some of the best we had during our weeklong stay in the city. Definitely try the rabbit. There are a few variations available. We had the Tourte Lapin and the Rable de Lapin along with a fondue to share. Also, some great local beers and a rose cidre to quench our thirst.

A Delicious Lunch in the Heart of Old Québec…read more We stopped into Lapin Sauté for lunch following a wonderful walking tour of Old Québec, and it proved to be the perfect place to relax and enjoy a memorable meal. Both of us opted for the table d'hôte menu, which included an appetizer, main course, dessert, and tea or coffee. We happily paid the small supplement to begin with the Duck Foie Gras served with strawberry-rhubarb jam and brioche--a decision we did not regret for a second. The foie gras was rich and silky, while the sweet-tart jam provided a beautiful contrast. For our entrées, I chose the Pulled Rabbit Poutine with devil's sauce. Comfort food elevated to another level, it was hearty, flavorful, and utterly satisfying. My dining partner selected the Cassoulet with duck sausage and duck leg confit. While the duck was excellent, it was the beans that stole the show--perfectly cooked, deeply flavored, and exactly what a great cassoulet should be. We finished with desserts: a traditional Far Breton for me and a beautifully executed Crème Brûlée for my dining partner. Both were wonderful endings to an already excellent meal. The service was warm and attentive, the ambiance charming and inviting, and the food delicious from beginning to end. Located in the heart of Old Québec, Lapin Sauté is exactly the kind of restaurant travelers hope to discover--authentic, welcoming, and serving food that leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended, and we would gladly return on our next visit to Québec City.

Personally, it was a treat for me trying out something different, but I do not think everyone would appreciate its almost raw meat and liver-like texture. The Tartare comes with fries, a salad, and crouton to round up the order. We upgraded the side of fries that came with the Tartare into their Tout Cochon poutine. I was happy with that option that way I was able to sample their house poutine without needing to dedicate a full meal order for it. I can say this was among the best poutines I have had. The gravy was rich and flavourful. The poutine was also loaded with a variety of different proteins like the Gaspor farm ham and the bacon-wrapped sausage. The perron cheese curds also perfectly topped off the whole dish. Our last order was the Quebec pork chop marinated and grilled with maple and tamari. It was served with apple chutney, sweet potato mash, and seasonal vegetables. It is exactly as you would expect with the ingredient details of the dish's name. You get a lot of different flavour profiles and textures with the meal order. Some saltiness with the pork chop then some sweetness with the apple chutney. Meaty tenderness with the pork chop, mushiness with the potato mash, and then some slightly crunchiness with the seasonal vegetables. We dined on Sunday lunchtime the day before Family Day. There were people waiting to be seated by the time we arrived, but fortunately our group of only 2 people has a table spot available so did not need to wait. We were led down flights of stairs to the lower floor which was level with the street below. The whole place with its classic walls and decor exudes with classic charm.

I ordered the half rack of ribs, which was a mixed bag. The flavor was good, but several ribs were so burnt they were completely inedible--straight to the discard pile. They came with a well-dressed Caesar salad featuring seasoned croutons and delicious shaved bacon, plus sliced fried potatoes that were crispy and not greasy in the least. The thick layer of BBQ sauce wasn't quite my style--I'm a dry rub girl--but I was too hungry to care much. No photos because I devoured everything. My dining companion had a chicken sandwich she raved about. She ordered a Nordic spritz while I indulged in some Quebec cider. Honestly, I expected more pork options given the restaurant's name, but they fed us quickly and efficiently, which was exactly what we needed. No real complaints except for those burnt ribs. The interior has eclectic, cool-looking decor that's worth checking out. Our waitress provided quick and efficient service as well.
