The Painted Burro was great, I really enjoyed my meal here. I grabbed a couple of tacos, and was pleasantly surprised with the quality. The flour tortillas tasted especially fresh, and were way more substantive than what I'm used to for other soft shell tacos. Plus the ingredients in each taco were fantastic; I got the pork carnitas and the chicken, and definitely recommend each (the pork in particular was amazing). The space itself was also nice, it felt modern and inviting. The bartenders were all fantastic, very friendly and constantly on the move while covering the impressively long bar. Everyone seems to recommend this place if you're staying in the area, and it's clear why. You'll find good food and drinks here. read more

I've been to the Painted Burro locations in Brookline & Harvard Square, so I decided to try out the Waltham location when I was in the area. My roommate and I came here for lunch on a weekday and had a great time. The service was great, waitstaff is all very nice. We had drinks and started off with some chips and salsa that were great. We ordered their chorizo queso which was unique and very tasty- the chorizo was cooked perfectly, and the veggie toppings added great flavor. For my main course I ordered my usual from Burro, the chimichanga (very good every time!). The only thing that I would change is that the red sauce is a better overpowering. My roommate ordered fish tacos and enjoyed her dish. We sat here for about an hour and half just enjoying ourselves so I would say it was a pretty successful experience. read more

All great except the rice was a bit undercooked. I thought it was good. His major reservation was that the food did not come out hot. Wasn't decisively "in the mood" for "Mexican" on this particular occasion so my expectations waltzing in were correlated and, at the end of it as it turned out, vastly outdone. The guac was superbly masticated with the pork belly and roasted tomatoes, additionally every one of the 7 tacos ordered were really very superb. We had a great dinner here tonight. Service wasn't fast but it was good, and we were fine with it since we wanted to catch up! They have a great list of zero proof cocktails in addition to their extensive bar menu. I had a raspberry no-jito and it was very tasty. This place was described to me as a 'fancy Mexican restaurant and I was immediately in because who doesn't want to dress up for their margaritas and guac ? As a repeat visitor, I've enjoyed learning about tequila as I drink it, having excellent sizzling presentation and the same friendly faces trip after trip. Parking can be a bit tricky depending on day of the week, but there is a parking garage which can have some spots available. Been to the Somerville location for brunch and it was 10/10. Came to dinner on a Sunday with my family and we ordered papas bravas, nachos, and tuna ceviche as starters. All amazing options except I questioned the carrots in the nachos?? As a vegetarian, I enjoyed the substitution for vegetarian refried bean as my family couldn't eat pork either. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, but I especially loved the grilled salmon. I substituted the potatoes for mango salad and they gave me like 3 pieces of the salad :( 4 stars because I wish they gave me more of it as a substitution. Ended with chocolate cake and churros. I had delivery from this restaurant. It arrived one hr later than promised. The weather wasn't a factor. Not only was the food cold, it wasn't the correct order that I paid for. I understand errors, however it was what followed that was unacceptable. I contacted the restaurant and was told to call back the next day. Not only did I call the next day, I brought the uneaten food with me to the restaurant. The manager was not at the restaurant when I arrived, as I was told would be. After waiting an unreasonable amount of time I had to leave. I left the food on the counter and I politely said "have a good day ". I will never return here again or recommend this restaurant to anyone knowing that, in the end, everyone gets what they deserve. read more

Found this gem on TikTok, saw they had a bottomless brunch $29 a person. To my surprise, the place wasn't busy at all for a Saturday morning. We were sat in the bar area and were served promptly by the bartender who was very personable. Drinks came out first which were delicious and then we picked a bunch of items to try. Each one was fresh and delicious as well as flavorful. They were playing reggae music, which set the tone beautifully for the morning. Some highlights were the short rib taco, French toast, and the papas. The special pancake of the day was dragon fruit, which tasted like a delicious marshmallow. For $29 as much as you can eat in an hour and a half of top rate Mexican dishes that reminded me of Southern California you can't go wrong. read more

Wait staff and food runners were attentive and friendly. All the servings were smaller portions of the regular items so we trued many items. We wanted to like the Brussels sprouts and cauliflower apps but they were mediocre. The chicken and waffles and eggs Benedict (on top of refried beans) were out favorites. We also enjoyed the short rib taco, omelette and fish taco. We paid extra for the guacamole with mango- it was very good. A few items were prepared with cilantro (which neither of us likes) and it couldn't be made without. We enjoyed the opportunity to try so many dishes workout eating food. This seemed fun and the food was good, however, if they're going to require you to have a certain service then they should prepare for it. The wait time for the food was way too long and the portions very small so you are going to order more which takes another long wait time. Items came out randomly so some people were eating and some were just watching and waiting. As stated, the food was good but not very hot and the wait time really took away from the experience. Great service in a chill and pretty space! Three of us went for brunch at 11am on a Saturday and it was surprisingly so empty! It started getting busier around noon though. We got the $25 bottomless brunch which I felt was a pretty good deal! We got a variety of tapas (corn, brussel sprouts, potatoes), two entrees, a few tacos, and French toast for dessert. Street Corn (2/5): Average. Nothing special, but not objectively bad. You can't really go wrong with corn, but it's also not up to par with other Mexican street corns. Brussels Sprouts (4/5): These were one of my favorites. The Brussels sprouts have a very nice char and are nicely seasoned. Carnitas Tacos (2/5): Too dry. Still decent, though. Short Rib Tacos (2.5/5): Also too dry. Flavor was decent. Slightly better than the carnitas. Fish Tacos (1/5): Fish was bland. Also soggy. Wouldn't recommend. Wings (4/5): These were my other favorites. Really well marinated and crispy. Superbeasto (2/5): This is a trap. Do not order. It's just a bunch of filling food items plopped on a plate. There's BARELY any chorizo. The chicharrones are pretty good. You have to be selective with what you eat in AYCE lest you get full too quickly. Chilaquiles (1/5): Had BARELY any meat in it. Chicken & Waffle (2/5): Waffle was soggy. Chicken wasn't that crispy. Gravy was all right. Burro Benedict (1/5): Why was it necessary to place this on a bed of refried beans? Everything here is designed to fill you up. I think it's the smartest just to get appetizers and tacos. $25 is an okay price for AYCE, but the food was just average. You can get sub-$22 ayce Indian food and $25 ayce sushi, and both of those options are better than this. Service is also a bit slow, so you can expect to do 2-3 rounds of orders before the 90 minute time limit is up. Try to place most of your orders at once. The servers were friendly, though. The restaurant itself seems pretty upscale. It's very clean and spacious, with high ceilings and fancy decorations. read more

Went here with friends who were visiting out of town, food was pretty okay but the environment was a bit hectic. We were a party of 4 placed in the middle of two larger parties (probably 10+) so it was a little challenging to navigate around our table. The decor is beautiful and the place itself is nice. They were really busy for a Friday night but our waitress was amazing. She was as attentive as possible but it did take us a while to get our bill, presumably because she was also serving the two larger parties. The food itself was decent; I got the papas bravas and beef empanadas. It was interesting that the beef empanadas were not closed but slightly opened around the sides. Usually, empanadas are crimped closed around the edges, but this wasn't the case. I would say it more closely resembled a torta. The taste was fine, the beef was on the drier end, but was acceptable since the chipotle mayo was tasty, I just wish there was a bit more of it! For the papas bravas, the potatoes were not as crispy as I would have liked and was a bit on the cold end. Similarly, I wish there was more sauce or even salsa to have gone with this. It was a good price for the large portion I had. I liked how the first round of salsa and chips were free, as at some places it isn't! I also got a margarita with salt on the rim... but all of the salt was slipping off the glass, so it made it difficult to hold and drink. I had thought this was a Mexican restaurant? The drink itself was saturated with sweet and sour along with an approximate one shot of tequila. Did I mention this establishment charges $13 for this beverage? I had to ask for chips and salsa, which I thought was customary at Mexican restaurants? Nothing to write home about once received, very bland on both notes. We decided not to spend much as the establishment already irked us. Therefore, we went with the veggie fajitas. Once delivered, I appreciated the variety of vegetables. It contained brussel sprouts, cauliflower, onions, peppers, and a slaw mixture. Definitely unique. However, it was accompanied by a total of 3 flour tortillas cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and pico de gallo. No beans or rice to be found. Seriously? You charge $28 for this dish and cannot even supply accompaniments? Wow. The best part was when I asked for more tortillas. No one asked if I wanted flour or corn, yet I received 3 corn ones. At the lovely price of $3 additional. What?!?! I can get a package of 10 El Milagre corn tortillas in Chicago for 40 cents. Wtf. In summary, do not go there. Beautiful space, easy to get to, friendly staff, and overpriced, incredibly mediocre food with meager portions. Back in the day we went to their Davis Square location and it was delicious, but it began to go downhill a few years ago so we stopped going. This place seems to be exactly the same. I got the fajitas and it was a mushy glop of vegetables with a handful of chicken, a puddle of lime juice at the bottom of the bowl, and stingy portions of avocado and trimmings. All I could taste was lime juice and there were no spices, nuance or textures. It didn't even come with rice or beans. Good thing I was at a business outing and didn't have to pay $32 for that mess. The only redeeming part of the meal was the strawberry lime spritz, which was delicious (and also about the size of a glorified test tube). There is no rice or beans on the menu, no carne asada, no pork verde, or any of the other traditional mexican dishes I love. The food is good but there are so many taco spots across the city that have better tacos for half the price. Its one thing when you get what youre paying for but they arent worth 9$ for one. Our server must have been overwhelmed, I asked for rice and beans she said they had them even tho they werent on the menu. She never brought them out and only now that im writing this review did I think about it. I didnt check the bill before leaving. I hope I wasnt charged for something I didnt get. But anyway. She took our order and 5 mins later came by to ask us if we were ready to order. That was a little concerning. The corn is good but too much mayo. They could lighten that up a bit. It tasted like someone took canned corn and dumped some cheese and paprika on them, but it wasn't bad. The chicken and waffles were bad. The chicken AND the waffles were both super soggy. It came drenched in this orange-yellow sauce-gravy thing that overpowered the chicken and the waffles. It was the biggest wtf moment of the entire meal and I didn't even want to finish this. I would not recommend this place- it's just not worth the $25. There are lots of better options where you can have better Mexican food for better value, and where you can have better AYCE (sushi, hotpot, Indian buffet, etc) for better value. The service and atmosphere were great the second I came in. Bartenders were very attentive and genuinely enjoyed conversation. Ordered the Gulf Shrimp "Diablo" to start. It was delicious with a healthy amount of full sized shrimp, they actually fell out as you took bites because there were so many in there. The flavor was slightly too sweet for me (only because of the mango) which didn't turn me off at all, ALL the flavors hit, the guac was so good! Sirloin steak taco was next.... I could have ate 12 of them, every bite was like biting into a filet mignon... no joke, zero gristle, melt in your mouth steak.. the combination of the hard shell and soft shell with the cheese and crispy onions was so unique and wildly delicious... yeah, crispy onions.... They were an amazing compliment to the taco.. a game changer!! Tacos are slightly over priced but if you hit happy hour they're 50% off.. all in all, anytime I'm staying in this area I will be here.. every time! Take out has always been good with the exception of some fat found in my steak tacos, but the amount of chunks of fat and gristle that was left behind in my steak tacos was in edible. Steak tacos should not have chunks of fat. I'm not sure how hard it is to trim away the fat and make a clean cut of steak. For the Price point, at this restaurant , this is clearly unacceptable. I eat at places that are less expensive and that cook steak amazingly, with no fat, that's the type of steak that I expect. Also, which was not pictured was the Birria tacos.
