So I deviated from my usual lunch spot to give this place a try. The menu looked good and it was busy when I walked in with my wife at 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. We were seated in a high top across from the bar. Our server, Hannah, was pleasant and cordial. My wife ordered the southwestern salad and I ordered a burger with a $2 upgrade to make the tater tots "garlic". Her salad comes and is much smaller than expected for $18. My burger came and I ordered it medium rare and it was well done. I sent it back to be refired to the proper temp and while I waited I ate the tater tots. I expected a $2 upcharge to be at least fresh garlic but it was garlic powder. On top of that, when I finished the tots(before the second burger) there was a pool of oil at the bottom of the basket plus 2 pools that leaked onto the table. The refired burger came back via a food runner, not a manager, and this burger was also not medium rare but I was hungry so I ate it. Finding a place to take a friend out for his birthday is easier said than done. Men are, generally speaking, uncomplicated creatures. Then again, this is me we're talking about... I wanted to find a place that wasn't too divey, but at the same time not over-the-top. Tessie's fit the bill perfectly in terms of what I was seeking. However, while generally good, the experience did leave a little to be desired. I ordered "The Commentator," cooked medium-rare, and garlic tater tots as my side. There was also a piece of chocolate cake, because if its birthday cake, the calories don't count, even if it isn't your birthday! Those who know me well can tell you that when it comes to food, I tend not to be a man of subtlety. At the same time, I am not usually a fan of excess for the sake of excess. I am sitting here unable to tell if The Commentator was just on the wild side in terms of creativity, or excess for its own sake. I am willing to award some benefit of the doubt here... especially since I did this to myself with The Classic sitting right there at the top of the menu. As wacky as it is, the combination does work. Patty, bacon, and cheese are always a winning combination. The slaw added some freshness and a little bit of acid, the onion rings some crunch, and finally the sauce offered some sweetness. All this would be a solid four: while a little too outlandish for my preference, I can see what they were going for. Further, I appreciate that the beef appeared to have some basic seasoning (many "fancier" places skip even on the salt!) However, my friend had also ordered his burger medium rare. Whereas he had a nice puddle of juice, mine had only a whisper of pink, and while I wouldn't call it dry, it wasn't juicy either. For the garlic tater tots, these were cooked to crisp perfection, and garlicky enough to satisfy even my Slavic soul! If I am to nitpick and split hairs, my only critique is that they tended to disintegrate when dipped in ketchup. Yet, I see this as evidence of them being house-made instead of from frozen! Meanwhile, the chocolate cake was a miss. It was so dense, it could easily be mistaken for fudge. Look, I'm all for chocolate covered chocolate, but if we're approaching the density of a neutron star... maybe this isn't really cake! Where it comes to the service, this left a little to be desired. I wish our server were a little more attentive in checking in periodically during our meal. After delivering our burgers and checking in two minutes later, she was MIA. Napkin, ketchup, and especially water went critical! I need to reach for my water bottle just writing this! Finally, the location and vibe were pleasant. I would describe it as modern with a twist of rustic and hip. Nice enough that you know it isn't a dive, but not fancy by any stretch of the imagination. Live music was a nice touch too, though it did make it a tad loud in there. So, you might be wondering with lackluster service, overcooked beef, and astronomically dense cake, why I give three stars instead of two?! Because to me, two stars is when an experience is poor. Came here with some friends for some casual dining. We arrived late due to the lack of available parking. The place was busy on a weekday with just one server. Service was still fairly quick. Food came out nice and hot. The saracha honey hot wings were great. So we decided to order more and try the garlic flavor. Turns out the garlic wings were rather bland and didn't have the same wow as the saracha honey hot wings. The burgers are well sized and one burger was too much for me to handle with appetizers. Probably my top pick when it comes to burger spots in the Boston area, esp with their friendly staff and laidback vibes. Plus, plenty of parking along the main road outside - so finding a spot usually isn't much of an issue. Food-wise, I must say that their burgers are on point - with how juicy and flavorful each and every bite is. Though I must say that their chili is also a good choice, esp on a cold day or if you're looking for something a little on the lighter side. As for drinks, they've got a pretty good rotating list of seasonal cocktails that doesn't disappoint - despite how I'm usually more of a beer-guy myself. Found this gem by searching nearby places, had to kill some time. Nice atmosphere. Sat at the bar. Wasn't busy, went in around 1pm. Got the coconut shrimp for an appetizer and the fried chicken Sammie. I will say both were delicious. I am always on the hunt for a good chicken sandwich, to be honest, hard to find. Not chic fil a, not Dave's hot chicken, none of those places ever hit the mark. So to FINALLY found a great one! Yay! Was thin and crispy. The secret to a good burger is not all the stuff you throw on top, it is the burger meat itself. I was actually encouraged that the hamburger patties were so thin, I thought they must actually taste good, because I'm not trying to overwhelm us with a massive burger. OMG burger heaven!!! We found Tessie's bar & grill by chance. The menu was simple but offers "many" variations on burger options. I went with the Patty Melt, and it was cooked perfectly to order (rare)! The combination of flavors was amazing. I would recommend this option as a 10/10. I ordered the side salad. Hubby opted for the classic burger with a side of sautéed mushrooms and fries. He made short work of it, and I'll admit I helped with the fries & opted to pkg up my side salad to go so I had room for the seven layer chocolate cake. Yes SEVEN layers. Our terrific server warmed it for us, and it arrived absolutely covered with "homemade" whipped cream and drizzled with hot fudge. Suffice it to say there was a war of the spoons... I won. This is the 2nd time I tried this place once in Walpole and once here. Food is mediocre not much flavor to it and it arrive lukewarm. I ordered the chicken and waffle Husband ordered fried pickles and the chicken tenders so I'm basing my review on those items only. Chicken and waffle: Soggy cold waffle with room temp fried chicken cutlet. Really no seasoning in the chicken just fried maybe some salt but I don't think it had even that. Fried pickles: They were ok arrived hot dipping sauce was good. Chicken tenders: Supposedly had Cap'n Crunch cereal as a flavoring but neither of us could taste it and that's one of my favorite cereals. All in all the food was meh the service was slow and the waitress although very nice was a little clumsy (accidents happen) and dropped a plate with syrup that got all over my sweater which I didn't realize until I felt sticky in the car. Would I go back? Probably not as this is my 2nd time and neither time did I really enjoy the food. Found this place on Yelp and it was near the hospital so we gave it a try. Interior was real nice, lots of tv's (The Masters was on), hi-tops, booths and bar seating. Plenty to choose from on the menu. The burger was outrageously good and I can still taste the perfectly crispy tots. The tips combo (Turkey and Steak) were beautifully glazed and juicy. Came here on a Monday night ( June 26th) with some friends. We were 5 ladies meeting for some drinks and food. We grabbed the only booth in the place. We were comfy and ready to enjoy this place. Service was great, we were slow to order, and the servers weren't rushing us. We were all enjoying the drinks and conversation. We didn't order appetizers and just chose to order meals. This cozy modern bar & restaurant serves up a variety of signature burgers, build your own burgers, chicken sandwiches, portobello sandwich, hot dogs, salads, chili, appetizers, comfort entrees (turkey tips, steak tips, baked mac & cheese), plus a full bar offering 16 beers on tap rotating, bottle beers, and cocktails. The prices here are moderate, most entrees $11.95-$16.95, turkey/steak tips $22.95-$23.95. The place has seating up at the bar, high top tables, and regular tables, plus several TVs throughout the bar. I stopped in at Tessie's for lunch very recently. I ordered #1 The Tessie ($15.95 plus tax) served with house fries (or tater tots or house slaw) and dill pickle slices. College football was on the TVs during my visit. The Tessie was a very thick burger topped with melted cheddar, bacon jam, shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato slices, caramelized onions and smoked avocado aioli drizzle on a toasted egg kaiser roll. This burger was very juicy and the ingredients especially the bacon jam and the sweet onions made this burger two thumbs up. The golden house fries were served very hot, but very salted up. Delicious!! I was looking to try something new and meet some family from out of town for lunch. Tessie's had a good menu selection and let's just say, if you want a burger, this is the right place!! I absolutely love Jaime, Brian, and Willie. Kay and everyone else are just amazing, too! Please never change your incredibly diverse menu and ability to make burgers and sandwiches on lettuce! Without bread it's been so hard to enjoy these things and Tessie's made them possible for me again, no small feat in my eyes. The weekly specials are so fun!
