What happened to our favorite restaurant? Bittersweet was our "go to" place for dinner. The Tavern menu was fantastic as was the main dining menu. Recently they merged the two menus and, in my opinion, now only offer the high priced dinners with a smattering of tavern selections. To add insult to injury, we received an email less than two weeks ago from Bittersweet touting the daily specials. Wednesday was supposed to be BBQ night. The website as of today's post still has this listed. When we got to the restaurant we found out our beloved Tavern menu was no longer offered, nor was the BBQ special or any other special listed on the website. Strike one.... We immediately wanted to leave feeling like we had been mislead however, at 7pm on a Wednesday in the middle of Westport, there are few other choices for dinner. We decided to stay and ended up with the fish tacos for $15. The waitress, who was very cordial and responsive, after taking our order, returned with our drinks and bread basket. The corn bread muffins and red pepper jelly never disappoint but the stale bread nuggets and honey butter were less than desirable. I still had hope. After all, this was the place my husband and I had spent thousands of dollars at and the place we had referred family and friends, and recommended clients to use for a wedding venue. When our meals arrived I was mortified. The taco shells came straight from a box. Any fish tacos I have ever ordered from a restaurant were fresh corn tortillas. These were hard taco shells that I can purchase from the grocery store for $1.89 a box. The fish was ok but over spiced, and the sour cream, guacamole and salsa was as about as ordinary as something from Taco Bell. I expected so much more from a place that knocked my socks off with the best oysters around, and the most amazing fish and chicken dishes I have ever wrapped my lips around. I don't know if this is a tragic reflection of the economy or if there has been a (very poorly) calculated change by management however, you will find me hard pressed to spend another dime at this establishment. read more

Havent been to Bittersweet Farms in many years. Received a few gift certificates from a client for Christmas and it is local to my home so we decided to try it. We have been on two different occasions in the last two weeks, once on a Thursday, once on a Tuesday. Both times the food was exceptional but the service was dreadful. Waitresses rushed us thru interactions both times, rarely checked on us, had to have the hostess box our food, had to ask the food runner for more water etc. As someone who is in the restaurant business, I have sympathy for busy waitresses. But neglecting tables is another problem. One waitress barely listened to me detailing my food allergy, as if it was of unimportance. If it wasn't for the gift certificates, I would never return. read more

Our rustic wedding was here on Friday. Everything went great the day of. The food was really good and the venue was really nice inside. We did the ceremony and reception in the same main level. We are extremely happy with how everything came together. The only negative is that we had to deal with a constant change in coordinators that we worked with. Because they left Bittersweet Farm or got fired, I am assuming. The first two did not write down all the details we talked about. This led to much confusion 2 weeks before the wedding as we tried to work everything out that was wrong with our new coordinator Sarah. I dined with a friend from out of town on Easter Sunday evening. The service and food quality were lacking. I had to request a refill of water and the server took my glass to the kitchen to refill it. The food was tepid when served and my baked stuffed shrimp was dry and lacked flavor. We requested additional corn bread and our server replied "no." My friend ordered the bread pudding. A very dry end piece was served and a knife was required to cut into it. No cappuccino was available with dessert. Dishes were not bussed from the table when dessert was served. Recommend another restaurant for a holiday meal. read more

We dinned there Saturday June 8, 2013 with a party of 11 people. My wife ordered the Lobster Roll and her friend ordered a Clam bake like special. I ordered some farmhouse steak special with a " rissotto cake".. My wife could eat lobster 5 times per week. Did not finish half of hers. My steak tasted like it was marked on the grill then microwaved. It was incredibly rubbery and the rissoto cake was not risoto. If in fact was rissoto, it was probably the worst one in southern MA. We kept chatting and eating breab while having a couple beers. When the waitress finally asked how dinner was and I expressed to her my feelings her answer was " thats too bad" as she handed a $340.00 bill... Bittersweet Farm is the place I chose to host my daughter's Jack and Jill Wedding Shower. I could not have picked a better place. 150 people came to celebrate with us. From the second we walked in the door to the gorgeous decor, to the food that was served, to the amazing wait staff, and the bartenders who never stoped all night. We had stations set up and food passed around, there was something for everyone's taste. The array of food was over the top. Everyone is still raving about the food. My personal favorite was the mashed potato bar. I have to give a special shout out to Carla, from the time I made my first phone call to her until she said goodnight after the shower, she was so attentive to my every need, and trust me, I was needy. I have never dealt with anyone who was so professional, accommodating, and genuinely took an interest in every step of the planning process. She delivered everything and more that she said she would. I can't thank Bittersweet Farm enough for making our night a magical evening. read more

We got married here May 2015 We wanted a rustic barn themed wedding, but other venues were just too far, and costly. Bittersweet Farm is reasonably priced, and works well for those looking for this type of venue. Our coordinator Lindsay was so sweet, and helpful, and really made sure our vision came to life. The staff was friendly, and polite. Everything flowed smoothly the day of the wedding, thanks to her. The grounds are beautiful, and the interior is cozy and intimate. Once upon a time, I adored this restaurant. Now, I wish I'd never heard of it! Stay away from ordering meals here, the chowder and mashed potatoes are the only thing worth eating, and their "famous" corn muffins are good smeared in butter. The lobster salad, was a $2 bag of grocery store bagged salad with a 1/4 lobster tail tossed on top at best. For $19, we could do way better. The stuffed sole, flavorless, until I added salt anyway. The plank salmon was dry and overcooked. The swordfish was good but not very memorable. The baked potato tasted like it came from a school cafeteria. So...moved to Westport three years ago and this was a "go to" place for the family. However, it has gone so far down hill. I don't know if it is the turnover in the kitchen or what. Last night was awful. When we started dining there you would get a bread basket to munch on before dinner, it was complimentary, and the bread was warm. Now...$4.00 and the bread is cold. Burgers were over cooked, asked for medium. Kids prime rib was under cooked. Usually fresh asparagus comes with entrees. Now it looks like frozen broccoli and sliced carrots. Dessert was underwhelming. As usual we ordered the brownie sundae. One tiny scoop of whipped cream, no caramel sauce and the brownies tasted like a piece of fudge. Uneatable on all counts. Also, please make sure ketchup bottles are full before you open. Service was here and there. No water refills during dinner. No offer of any more drinks at all. If I'm going to spend over $100 for dinner this is not where I am going! read more

I had the pleasure of stopping into to Bittersweet Farm last night with some family. I honestly didn't even know this place was around. It is a hidden gem, thanks to yelp for helping me find it. We all took advantage of the $19 prime rib special! What a bargain! You get French onion soup, Caesar salad and prime rib for $19! Our meat was cooked perfectly and we were all full to the max, nobody left hungry that was for sure. They even had a live one man band which was excellent. Not sure what all the 4 or 5 stars are about. My experience at the downstairs "tavern" was a 2 at best. The best part of our meal was the below average service. It took 15 minutes before our server even came to our table. The food left much to be desired. I ordered the $15 fish tacos. They were basically a frozen tilapia fillet in a hard shell with cole slaw and plastic cheese on the side, no flavor. It was like they have never seen what a real fish taco tastes like. My girlfriend had the fried oysters-flavorless, except for the taste of overused frying oil that left a bitter aftertaste. We were with a few other people and all of their dishes tasted like they were out of the freezer and flavorless. If you want a family-owned Applebee's, this is your place. If you want fresh and tasty food, look elsewhere. read more

I attended a work-related holiday party on 12/6/18. Our group was on the upper level. I have never been to this place before. The place is nicely decorated, warm and inviting. The food is definitely good - everyone was satisfied with their orders. The service, and the reason why I will give this place 2 stars, was atrocious. There were 2 people taking care of approximately 20 people or so. The fixed menu consisted only of 4 choices (the typical beef, chicken, fish or salad). Unfortunately, our waiter seemed to be very new at his job, a few days at best. Never introduced himself, no drink orders were taken - everyone had to go downstairs to the super crowded bar. Some of the orders were wrong. 2 of them came when everyone was done with their main course. The service itself was extremely poor. No one picked up the dirty glasses and some courses were served over the dirty plates from the prior course. My main course was served over my smaller 7" dirty salad plate. Some people never got their salad. The other person taking care of our party was a woman by name of Karla, I believe. The service was just as poor. For $110 for 2 people I definitely expect better service and this was definitely not it. read more

I just moved to Westport from Boston, so I am not expecting much in the way of stellar restaurants down here. This is an example... very suburban and blah food. Doesn't taste so fresh either. We sat in the upstairs dining room, which is nice enough (if you like the country club look) but the Kmart music turned me off. The bar downstairs seems fun (with a band). What a find! We had just arrived at Horseneck Beach campground in the evening, and, hungry for dinner, asked the campground staff where to grab a bite to eat. They only knew of a really expensive seafood place nearby, or a pizza place down the road. We headed towards the pizza place, stopped in at a market to pick up some snacks, asked again for a recommendation, and Lo! We were informed about Bittersweet. The restaurant is housed in a cool rustic barn. They have live music, we were told, but that night there was a wedding reception going on upstairs (and they were seriously having a ball.. the sound of people dancing projected energetically through the wooden beams on the ceiling above us.) We arrived just as the kitchen was closing, but they agreed to serve us appetizers. The chowder was excellent. Can't say as much for the Caesar salad, which was oddly dressed, if at all (sort of just seemed wet and flavorless), but the ambiance was terrific and we we so happy to have found moderately priced food in the area that wasn't pizza. Nope, hasn't changed any. The bread was fine, the salad delicious, but the only vegetarian thing on the menu was a pasta dish that was blander than any pasta I had had in a while. It was like they had never heard of seasoning. However, it was rescued with salt and pepper somewhat. My date had fish and chips, he said they were certainly not worth the price, however they were decent. I am starting to think that even the atmosphere isn't worth the prices here. Def. One of our favorit places to eat we only eat downstairs in the tavern..except for the one time we ate in the barn that's when we got married there we like it so much! The corn bread is amazing! And really so is everything else for some reason I order fried oysters there a lot I don't order them anywhere else not sure why but I love them there ! The emmas chickem is super! On a few nights they have prime rib and the ones I have had have beef fabulous! Thservice is great the live music is great there is a ramp to get down stairs my father has troubble walking and he gets in here no problem! Has a great rustic feal to it Now I can't say anything about the more fine dineing section upstairs love it so much down stairs have nevered bothered to go up! read more

Tonight marked the fourth time I've been to Bittersweet Farm. All other times it has been nothing but a positive experience. However, tonight was completely different. We arrived for our reservation to celebrate my mom's birthday and were promptly seated upstairs. Besides us, the only other people upstairs were a couple and two parties of four or less (so, in my opinion, not too crowded). After we were seated we were given our menus and told to take a few minutes to look everything over. Our first red flag should have been the fact that our server did not return to take our order for nearly 20 minutes! Then, over the course of a 2-hour dinner (when it did begin to fill up a little more), our server checked on us a total of ONE TIME!!! Empty salad plates were left on our table and all eight water/soda/tea glasses sat empty for the entire meal!!! We were never offered a refill of any of our drinks by any of the waitstaff. When our server did happen to return the one time, they tried (unsuccessfully) to be extremely engaging to overcompensate for the fact they had completely vanished on us for close to half an hour! I feel bad giving a 2-star rating because the food is (and was tonight) excellent. However, I have never experienced this level of sub-par service anywhere, let alone a restaurant that portray themselves as mid/upscale restaurant. Completely unacceptable. Unfortunately, with no manager around to discuss this issue with, the only way we could convey our unhappiness with the service was with a small tip. Work on your service!!!!!! read more

New Years Eve. Full house. Reservations at 9pm. We arrived at 8. Found 4 seats at the bar after about 20 minutes while we waited for our table. Staff working to ensure that everyone is having a great experience. Great drinks and live music downstairs. Table ready on time next to the huge windows overlooking the outdoor courtyard with large outdoor heating towers. The barn was beautifully decorated with white Christmas lights. Food Arrives, my daughter's boyfriend loved his Prime Rib, cooked perfectly. My daughter had the Scrod which she said was ok, but bland. My wife had the duck which is always good and enjoyed it. My only complaint- I ordered the Filet Homard, it arrived without the lobster. When I inquired, I was told matter of factly by the server that they were out of lobster- no advanced notice,no apology. The filet was delicious but not what I had ordered. Overall, a great experience, and we appreciate the effort that the restaurant staff puts in and the sacrifices that they make personally to ensure that the patrons have a memorable experience.
