I had a pretty disappointing experience here. I went in with a clear idea of the hairstyle I wanted and even showed reference photos, but the end result was not what I asked for at all. It felt like there was either a miscommunication or my request just wasn't taken seriously. What made it worse was that despite not receiving the service I asked for, I was still charged full price ($200+). There was no effort to adjust the cost or offer a solution, which didn't sit right with me. The staff was polite, but overall I left feeling frustrated and unheard. For the price you pay, I expected better attention to detail and customer satisfaction. I hope they improve their communication and accountability in the future. read more

I had a really bad haircut experience with my last visit this last Thursday. Erika was the hairstylist who cut my hair. I asked her to cut it and during the cut she said the scissors weren't sharpened, Now that isn't inherently bad but my hair I felt was cut far shorter than I intended. And the bangs were not what I wanted either. I am not one to speak much about my hair when it's getting cut but I just feel very disheartened by it and while hair grows back, this memory won't be forgotten. Just very disappointed, depressing and sad all around. Brought me to light tears. At the cost of almost $100 I would expect better professionalism when it comes to a customer's hair and making sure you're cutting it according to their wishes. On a personal note, I was always a return customer because I really liked her and I just hope she can improve on this or doesn't happen to anyone else. read more

I scheduled an appointment with them last week and had to take some time off from work. We all are busy with our lives and telling me the hairstylist won't be able to accommodate me an hour before my appointment is beyond disappointing. They sent me reminders for my appointment days before today just to tell me now before driving there that I cannot be accommodated . From the moment I called to make an appointment... the experience was great! The front desk girl was wonderfully pleasant. I was paired up with Shelby..who I wanted because of a previous Yelp review from a girl who recently returned to Texas after living in Hawaii... but was willing to go with anyone. Shelby was a gem! From the start. If I didn't live in Hawaii, I would go to her always! Her positive energy filled the room. She was very personable and accommodating and made me feel like a guest in her home. This is absolutely the BEST hair salon I have ever been to. I have never been really "loyal" to a salon before because I hadn't found the right place, but I have been going here religiously for the past four years, and ALWAYS had amazing results. Matthew is simply incredibly talented and very kind and welcoming. He always knows exactly how to make my vision come to life. He even did my wedding hair coloring and it was PERFECT. However, if he is unavailable (being that good means getting booked up very quickly), the other girls in his salon are all very VERY talented and I have never had a single negative with any of my experiences with them. I feel like I am in very good hands with whichever stylist I book with, and recommend any of them to my friends and coworkers. I sadly am moving away for work, but this salon will absolutely be one of the top things I'll miss most about San Antonio. What drew me to Bixa hair studio was their use of cruelty free, plant-based products, and their commitment to sustainability.  Cute salon with a calm environment and the scent of Aveda products is so relaxing. My stylist was Erica who was friendly and very professional. She listened to what wanted and is very knowledgeable in her field which resulted in a great haircut. Sadly I didn't get the look that I wanted. My appointment took 5 hours and total was $390. I posted my inspo pics and then what I left with. I did ask for it to be a little bit more ash/lighter but most certainly wanted a balayage. You can see how harsh the line is from my root to the blonde. It just looks like my roots are outgrown and the color is very orange and yellow. Balayage should be more natural and gradient from the root to the ends. The owner came in half way through my appointment after all of my hair was bleached and asked what was it that I am trying to achieve? I was very confused by the question since my hair was already all bleached. When I called the next morning and spoke with the stylist she told me she also was not happy with the color and wanted do another toner as well and said she knew it would be harder to achieve a natural look with my length of hair. I feel like her doubt should've been shared before we even started so we could've tweaked it to be more natural looking instead of burning all of my hair first. They offered to fix it tomorrow and at first I agreed but after showing friends & family they suggested I just take my loss and to go somewhere else. I did not request a refund nor was it offered. My lesson is, just because something is expensive does not always mean it's better. I did enjoy the environment and how pleasant everyone was. It's a very clean & cute salon and they even offer cookies & wine during your visit. The owner offered other services and said they're available if/when I decide to have it fixed, but there's no fixing fried hair. read more

Hailey, where have you been all of my life!!! Talk about a gem! She is such a beautiful spirit and I left so excited about my new iridescent haircolors. It'll be bold when I'm feeling sassy and tame when I wanna wallflower. Hailey has been cutting my husband's hair for a year now and I'm thanking God she's now doing mine too! The salon is amazing. How they recapture re-purpose and recycle everything is amazing. I feel like I'm doing something for the environment by getting my hair done! The wash sink recaptures 65% of the water, they donate the haircut remnants so they can be used in the future for oil spills, who has even heard of that! The list of what it takes for Bixa to be a fully sustainable salon goes on and on. The products are amazing and animal cruelty free. My haircolor came out vivid and gorgeous, please see the pictures. Megan completely let me down. I feel as though any reputable stylist should take pride in their work and go to any length to fix their mistakes, however, Megan threw in the towel and decided not to take accountability. I made a 3rd appointment with her on 5/10 for $150 highlights scheduled for 6/1. The second appointment was my 5th day after my original appointment at which time she toned my hair again because it was too brassy. The salon is dark and I never noticed these huge chunks on either side, they were actually brought to my attention by another individual. I want to add that walking around like this for a month and adding the evidence of it all to the internet does not spark joy. Fearing confrontation, I reached out to Megan to share my discouragement in hope that I would receive reassurance as I was becoming more and more weary with everyday that passed. Negative reviews aren't my thing, but if this helps anyone, it's worth it. read more

I don't even know where to start my compliments. This salon has been by FAR the best hair service experience I've received probably ever. From the initial consult, to follow up, to the actual hair appointment itself, the service provided by Dom and Matthew is unmatched. Not once was I made to feel awkward or intimidated (you know what I'm talking about) and my stylist Dom made me feel very comfortable with just sitting there asking her questions throughout the service. I've been to Bixa a few times now and I can say honestly out of all of those times, I have not been disappointed. I've had them do boliage, a cut, color, and style. All have been done well and in a timely manner. Matthew is great! He recently took my hair a few shades darker and it came out EXACTLY the color I was hoping for. I showed him a few pictures and he got to work. Instead of it being a half a day transformation, it was about 2 hours which included the wash, cut, blow dry, and style. Unfourtunetly this place has new stylist/esthetician quite often. I went here in 2017 and had James as my stylist. Loved him!! I had a dramatic change from looooooong waist length hair and chopped it all off for a should length cut with fringe. He walked me through how to care for my bangs considering my hair type and was so excited for me that it made me excited for my hair!! When I came back 8 months later he was no longer there. I came back in 2020 after moving out of SA for a bit and found Karina. Karina was great! I loved getting my haircut, it so relaxing. She listened to what I wanted and executed it perfectly. I appreciated that she double checked with the length I wanted. Even though I showed her a picture of what I wanted she still made sure the length was what I wanted. Im sure stylist get a picture of what a client wants A LOT and I appreciated that she actually LOOKED at the picture and wasn't bothered by me showing a picture of what I wanted. Not too expensive especially since my hair is long, past my shoulder blades. I also had a running 4 week appointment to get my eyebrows and lashes tinted. However after 2 months the esthetician was gone and when I was about to book my 5 month later hair appointment, Karina was gone. It's hard to keep coming here when I find a stylist I trust and like and they're gone soon after. I've never been dissatisfied here but I'm not a fan of the high turn over. I'm trying to get a stylist that is aware of my hair type and struggles and I can trust to give me a great cut according to my hair and not hope for the best each time. read more

I had a partial balayage appointment with Darlene yesterday. The service was exceptional, but I was kind of disappointed by the results. I showed Darlene several pics of what I wanted to achieve (the pic in the middle is my ideal). I told her that I wanted a more dirty blonde with ashy tones. The result was not very satisfying, as you can see in the first pic. My hair did have a more ashy/cool tone to it, but it was not as nearly blonde as I would want it to be. The toner Darlene used did not bring out the blondeness, and my hair before was actually more blonde than my hairs now. When I booked the service online, I don't know whether I forgot to uncheck the box for blow dry or what, but I was charged $40 for the blow dry. There was an additional fee for gloss. I wish the results would be better for the money I paid. Nonetheless, Darlene was meticulous in her work. read more

So I booked an appointment with Katie to get full foliage done. I specifically told her i wanted blonder hair than what I already came in with. I showed her photos of what I wanted. She used three bowls of bleach on my hair and foiled mostly the front. I thought everything was going great until i see the after result when she turns me around. She put BROWN toner on top of everything!!!! No highlight in sight??? She gave me the complete opposite of what I wanted! $300 to get brown hair???? She said the brown toner would fade off but even then that's not what I wanted. Ive never had issues with hairstylist so I'm super bummed and cannot recommend this place. She said she could have me come in and strip off the toner, but at this point i don't trust her touching my hair. Wish I could just get my refund or partial refund at least. Matthew is awesome....make sure to book early as he does fill up quickly. Bixa is a great salon located along Broadway and they provide full hair salon services. They are a no tip salon which is unique from my experience. Love my new cut and color. I found Matthew from another client of his....she was our waitress one day at brunch and I absolutely loved her hair. Great find on my part! I booked with Sarah for balayage, haircut, and blowout. She listened to my concerns and expectations very carefully, made a few suggestions and my hair turned out to be perfect. I asked for an all over color brown she did just that. She also used amazing Aveda hair products on my hair and made my hair really soft silky and smooth and smell good. I found this hair studio in a rut because I wanted my normal hair back after ruining it and I'm so glad i came here. Katie saved my hair and my confidence! What's the point of forging a relationship with a new salon when the owner has never once said hello to me one time while there, albeit even in a small space and then you work with, form a rapport and begin to trust a stylist and discuss all the options for your hair, but when push comes to shove on color situations, you get told to go elsewhere. Tried to discuss the situation, could've even been nice had the owner (who was maybe even more experienced than the stylist) try to get involved or assist just to keep me as a client. But, clearly I wasn't important enough or valued enough. Also, tried to offer my own compromises, but for what? Nothing gained, just lost. Huge disappointment. I could say more, but what for. Where do I began...? I visited bixa and got a micro peel and brow wax with the esthetician Paige. It was the best facial I've ever had and I will definitely be coming back regularly to let her work her magic on my skin. Not the mention my eyebrows have never looked as beautiful as they do now. Darlene was fantastic! I loved being able to book online, and I appreciated the precautions taken due to COVID. When I arrived, she took time to provide a thorough consultation to make sure she knew what I wanted. She did some foils and balayage, a wonderful shampoo with scalp massage, a great cut, an eyebrow tint, and a keratin express blowout. All were done with care to details. She was friendly and skilled-- everything I could want from a new stylist. Really glad I chose this salon and that Darlene is who I booked with. I had an appointment 2 weeks ago with Megan. I have had a pleasant experience with her previously, but this time was not so great. My hair is darker brown, and she has previously highlighted my hair before. This time, I came in with a picture of maybe a shade lighter than usual, and she immediately said, " Nah, we are not doing that today!" I understood maybe it was too light, so I told her just to highlight it with the previous colors she used, which they keep in the computer. I asked her for a retouch of my roots as well, which are a little darker. After my highlights were done, she toned them down to basically dark brown. No highlights are seen in my hair! I basically have 1 dark brown color all over and 1 orange highlight under my hair. That's it! I was charged $300 and something dollars for basically 1 solid color. There are no highlights I can visiabally see, no visible change..nothing! I will never go back to this salon. I cried at home because I could have dyed it all one color for a fraction of the price. I waited 2 months for the appointment, and I left feeling horrible! I was ripped off! read more
