This is a hole-in-the-wall place with not-so-hole-in-the-wall prices. I think the least expensive entree on the menu is still over $10. Of course, being Halal may be a reason for the priciness of the food, but whether or not that is the real reason, I guess I'll never find out. I ordered the burger because...NY Times said so. By itself, the burger is $12. With a side, it is $15 total. I asked for my burger done medium, and it was perfect. The beef was moist and just pink enough on the inside. Thankfully, the person who took my order gave me the option of spiciness for my burger and I went with mild. I don't think I could have handled any spicier, especially because the fries themselves already had a little kick. I really enjoyed the fries - the seasoning was on point! I could have eaten a full plate of those just on their own. Overall, was the food worth the money? Perhaps for the one-time customer. Otherwise, regularly frequenting this place will really break your bank! If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by and trying their burger since they were featured in the NYTimes. I'm not a fan of lamb in general, so I didn't try their lamb chops - even if I did, my opinion would probably be very biased. PSA: they are CASH ONLY and do not have an ATM in the store. I believe there are some up and down Knickerbocker that you may be able to find, but I'd suggest coming prepared with cash. I did notice a sign on their register for an option to pay via Venmo or Chase pay, but I was not given these options and I had cash on me. The prices on the menu are all including tax, so at least there's that you won't be fishing for change if you come here with the exact amount. They also don't expect tip, since it is more of a casual dining place. My only concern is for the cleanliness of the tables. When I arrived, they were just opening and I noticed the non-skid floor mats had been placed on the tables overnight. I didn't notice them wipe down the tables after removing the floor mats, which was kind of concerning! This is probably the best burger I have had. The Jani burger which comes in at 12$ has a big fat juicy patty, spicy mint chutney, tomato on top, and no cheese. The beef itself is seasoned amazingly but paired with the chutney, it's amazing! They have the option of various spice levels, I would recommend to be careful with your spice choice as it's actually spicy. They also have some of the best lamb chops you will ever have but they are extremely pricy. You get 4 lamb chops for 18 bucks but they are well worth trying at least once! The place itself is kinda small but has decent seating arrangement with 4-5 picnic style tables. Highly recommend this spot for the Jani burger and the lamb chops. It's important to know that this is a Pakistani grill type joint. You won't find saucy foods like curries on the menu. There are no rice dishes like biryani. This place is all about the meat and they sure know their meat. They are well known for their lamb chops and trust me, they were just as good as the signs on the wall say they are. When you visit, you will know what I mean by the signs on the wall. Loved the spices on the lamb chops. No gamey taste here. I only wish that they had better sides. They offer vegetables that didn't look that amazing and masala fries which seems to be fries with some sort of spice on them. I also wish they offered mango lassi. The menu is pretty limited. If you're a naan fan you won't find that here but they do have paratha, a buttery flakey bread. As for the restaurant itself, it's pretty small inside. Seating is just a few picnic style benches that you might have to share with another party. The food is served on paper plates so this is not fine dining. Horrible service the girl on the counter had a nasty ass attitude like she didn't want to be bothered at all. Lamb chops were not even cooked i understand they don't do well done but that wasn't even medium rare. But I need to point out that the Nihari Sandwich was amazing. The meat was tender and juicy with a flavor that makes you're taste buds wanting more. They are smoky and cooked to temperature and they are spicy. The side of raita cools it down. I get it that good food takes a while to cook, but the service is a bit slow, so have some patience when you go there. I stopped here with a couple of co-workers, after both of them had raved that this place was surprisingly delicious and had some unique flavors on some traditional favorites. Sure enough, we went here last night and boy it was worth the subway ride from Manhattan to come visit this little tiny hole in the wall. The lamb chops and the hamburgers are ridiculously delicious and the chopped meat they use in the burger it's so tender it literally melts in your mouth. I guess it is because there aren't many halal places, and BYOB places, and it is a fun addition to the neighborhood, but I have had the burger and the lambchops and don't think either of them were special. I'm a returning customer. No problem with the food at all, delicious as always. BUT this time, "the bald headed guy" in the counter who took orders (instead of the lady, whom we found regularly on our previous trips) had such a negative attitude that I just felt like canceling and just leave right at that moment. It was as if he just didn't like us or the way we look or the fact that we had kids with us. I had this trip planned with my kids (not toddlers or babies) and didn't wanted to ruin the rest of their day. I kept my cool while ordering amid his constant interruptions making us feel as if we had no idea of what we are ordering and that also with his head shrugging and eye rolling blatantly. We almost felt as if he was enjoying demeaning us. After I finished paying, I asked him if he knew where the nearest mosque was as it was nearing Asr time and I hadn't prayed Zuhr. He said "no idea" in a raised voice even before I finished asking him the full question, attracting attention from the other guests sitting in the nearest table. My friend recommend we go to BK Jani for dinner one night and I'm so happy she did. I had never been before but I had walked by it a handful of times and had seen pictures of some of the menu items which they have placed outside their restaurant. We walked in and placed our order with an employee inside. We paid after placing our order and were given a number to take to our table for the server to bring our food out to us. We opted to sit outdoors in their patio area in the back. It wasn't a long wait for them to bring our food out to us. I had decided to go with the namesake Jani burger. This burger is special because it's made with 1/2 pound of custom blend ground beef and mint chutney. The combination of these two things makes for an extremely juicy burger where each bite basically melts in your mouth. I also did it with. a semi-spicy sauce which proved to be more spicy than I imagined! I'm a spicy novice but I'd suggest taking it slow if you haven't had any items here before.
