The environment was nice. 1 staff member was very polite and another was a little irritated at first. We ordered the Griz breakfast as we had at other Black Bear Diners but were in for a huge disappointment at this location. The bacon was burned up and crumbled on the plate and the waitress seemed put off when I asked for a replacement. The grits were supposed to be creamy but were uneatable as they appeared lumpy, stiff and hard. The sausages resembled the ones at the 99 cent store with wrinkled casings surrounding small, thin pieces of meat. What a disappointment. Will not be returning until they can find someone who knows how to cook. read more

Stopped by Black Bear Diner with a large group of people on a Saturday morning. They were definitely busy but able to accommodate us within a reasonable amount of time. Our waitress Rudy was the best ! She was funny, personable and efficient. There was a lot of people at our table but she was able to get every order exact and the food came out fast. For the last 2 times I have been here, the service has been absolutely horrible. The last time, they wouldn't even sit my family because we were one over the capacity limit. They counted my almost 2 year old as a seat. I was ok with waiting but they wouldn't even take my name down. I went there today 5/3, and they said they stopped seating people at 7:30. I was there at 7:35. Then checked the hours and the girl working there didn't even know what time they closed. There is nothing on the door posting the hours and everywhere you check online say they close at 10. They are losing many employees and having a horrible turnover rate. Their management must be a reflection on their business practices. I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but 2 times in a row of bad experiences isn't worth the trouble of trying for a third time. read more

We very much like the Black Bear Diner in Auburn - they serve good comfort food, however on our visit last week our main dish was tasty but what the heck happened to their veggies? I had the fish n chip for dinner and I have to say it was the Best I've had in any of the chain restaurants and some individual ones!! The fish batter was very crisp and the fish was very fresh tasting !! For dessert I had their apple cinnamon cream pie. It was very good and light but way too much for one person! The food is abundant, reasonably price and good. I like that you can order anything on the menu, make substitutions and there are no time restrictions on breakfast, lunch, dinner. This was our first visit to this chain. I was tempted to try it out by their advertising large portions and good old fashioned comfort food. They came through with flying colors. Ok, for six stars you must provide better booth seating. The seats were too low, so the table comes up to mid chest. Awkward. Also, there is no room to stretch. Your back is on the seat, your front is only an inch from the edge of the table. Your toes hit either the leg holding the table up, or the person opposite you, even if that person is a tiny 11 year old. Now that that is out of the way... Food? Wow. Their placemat, which reads out their "credo", and a short history of their franchise, promises you will say wow. I said wow. Several times. I'm here at home now still saying wow. I ordered the prime rib special, seasonal vegetables, mashed potatoes with country gravy, and added mushrooms with bleu cheese crumble over the rib. The meal came with a large salad, almost half a meal in itself, a cornbread muffin, Au jus and a horseradish sauce for the meat. Wow. Everything was delicious. Even the vegetables which I normally force myself to eat at most places just to be a good boy, were tasty, especially with a tiny dab of horseradish. The prime rib? Exquisite. Melt in your mouth tender, juicy, flavorful, all by itself, (even when ordered well done), dunked with Au Jus, or dabbed with sauce, gave me several ways to enjoy the generous portion. Best of all? Order the mushroom/bleu cheese crumble. Order it. I order you to order it. I have never tasted anything so delicious on an already mouthwatering chunk of meat. I will be back, and I will have mushroom/bleu cheese crumble on every piece of meat I ever order at this chain, every time I go, and I will be going back again. Then there was the price. Four people got fed with more than we could eat for $48.00?? Wow. I've paid more for two people in other places, and the food was not as good. Service was great too. Attentive without being intrusive, accommodating, helpful and friendly. My new go to chain on the road! Well done folks, well done. Can I get the Saturday prime rib special all week?? Made the mistake of going on Fathers Day... we waited 40min to be seated and then another 10 min to order and 40min for food to arrive at table. Two of the four orders were not correct- When my breakfast arrived the portion size was about 1/2 of what is normally is and did not include all the ingredients... I guess they were running low and just served what they had left without even checking back with me. I could have easily ordered something else!!! After driving over I80 and checking into my hotel I was pretty hungry and was a little reluctant to step inside @ 8:30 with 30 minutes before closing. As I was quickly greeted and seated I was able watch the amazing teamwork from the manager and his team to feed all the guests currently seated , myself , and a couple others arriving after me. Having been in the restaurant industry for 37 years I could appreciate the small extras the team did to make each guests visit enjoyable and memorable. As I got my bill and paid I was able to speak with the manager [ Aaron ] and let him know I was watching the team and complimented them for a job well done. He let me know himself and few others had transferred over from the Roseville location to help out . Finally about 3 minutes later when she sat us with our 7 month old she threw the menus down and said "Here you go." and walked away leaving me with no seat for our 7 month old. We stopped here on New Year's Day while traveling for a late dinner. The waitress was very friendly but after we ordered we were told the kitchen was behind so it would be a wait for food. Fortunately, since it was late and our toddler was starving, they brought out fruit and salad to tide us over. When the food came, the steak, which was ordered rare, was well done. They brought us another one, which was cooked as requested, and took the steak off our bill after the long wait and the cooking issue. The restroom needed attention. One stall was out of order and one had no toilet paper. Overall the staff was very friendly and the wait and food quality is on par for most of my experiences with a Black Bear Diner.
