Arrived at the Horizon Blvd Black Bear diner around 12:30 PM (party of 4); the diner was about 1/5 full. The young man at the check-in/out counter looked at our party then walked off without acknowledging us or saying anything; about 6 minutes later he finally returned to lead us to a table. After being seated, we sat for 10-15 minutes before the waitress finally came over to take our drink and food orders. Note that the diner was not busy by any measure. My wife and I both ordered breakfast meals with eggs over-easy and toast. About 20 minutes later our order was placed on the serving line under the heat lamps where they stayed for about 10 minutes. When finally served to us, the toast we ordered was not with the order; the waitress said the toast would be up shortly. About 15 minutes later, our eggs had gone cold and we still had not received our requested toast. At this point I had eaten most of the breakfast and I re-requested the toast and a new set of eggs to replace the cold eggs. The staff at this Black Bear Diner was inattentive and lackadaisical compared to any other Black Bear Diner I had ever been. The food was decent, but also not up to Black Bear Diner standards. Note that the other Black Bear Diner in town is excellent and nothing like this one. read more

We were off to a slow start, as we waiting for someone to take care of us! A young man finally came over and took our order!! We were not disappointed, the portions are ginormous!!! The music could be changed up a little the big band blaring was a bit much. The manager finally made rounds and I let her know it took 15 minutes for someone to come take drink and food order. So originally my wife wanted Cracker Barrel at the new location but that place was crazy packed and then I remembered my brother mentioned Black Bear Dinner at the Petro truck stop off the Horizon exit so off we go. We arrived and were greeted by some cute black wooden bears outside the restaurant. We were promptly seated and both of us ordered the Nicaraguan coffee. Our server asked us what flavor creamer we wanted which was a very nice touch. To say the coffee was good is an understatement. That was some darn good coffee, I think we both had 3 cups each . We each ordered The Bears Choice breakfast, my wife with over-medium eggs, French toast and the Hickory Smoked ham steak and I ordered the same also with over-medium eggs, 2 pancakes and upgraded to the Hot Italian sausage and a side of Hashbrowns. Our order was brought to our table shortly thereafter and we both went WOW! The eggs were cooked perfectly, my wife's ham was delicious as was my sausage and both the French toast and pancakes were spot-on delicious. The Hashbrowns were super yummy. I've been to this location twice since the switch from Iron Skillet. It's my absolute favorite diner. Hubby and I love to take our time strolling around the shop and picking up random things we can't live without. The food has always been great but it's even more delicious as Black Bear. I strongly suggest you try everything that's prepared on premises. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. The service can be a bit spotty at times but the food is always on point. read more

A completely new renovated restaurant at Petro truck stop. Be prepared to wait for a table on the weekend. I'm not sure how busy this establishment is during the week. Our server was professional and attentive. Our food was delicious and filling. You won't leave hungry here. Highly recommend the pancakes, chicken fried steak and their coffee is very tasty and fresh. They serve breakfast, lunch or dinner all day and have evening specials after 4 pm. I hope to return soon and try the prime rib, since the chicken fried steak was so good. It wasn't hidden by heavy layers of breading, the meat was cooked properly and the gravy kicked it up a notch. We stopped here to eat breakfast after a 10 hour drive from CA. The service here is different then the CA diner. We were greeted almost by every employee there as we walked through. We got seated right away. I had the eggs and waffle. This comes with two eggs, hash browns, sausage and a sweet cream waffle. My husband had the meat lovers skillet. The food was good. But mostly the service was exceptional. I wasn't happy with my over easy eggs so I left them on my plate. The waitress asked me what was wrong with them and I told her they were too underdone but that it was fine to just leave them. She brought me two more eggs that were just perfect. Saw the ratings and was a little bit nervous but we decided to try it anyway because it was the only restaurant with true comfort food that we saw. We are so glad that we did. All of us got the little dinners and wow, they were huge plates of food and so reasonable. My daughter got the pot roast and it was surprisingly moist. My husband got the chicken fried steak which he really liked. I got the meat loaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. The gravy was ok but over all it was so good and we are completely satisfied. We went to the newly opened Burleson restaurant and enjoyed one of the biggest meals we've ever had. Literally. The biscuit that came with my breakfast order was about the size of my whole hand, tall and wide. All of the ingredients on both of our plates were fresh, tasty and filling. My husband ordered tri tip steak, a cut of meat that we haven't been able to find outside of California. Great service. Very family friendly. If you have ever been to a Black Bear Diner in California this isn't even close. The food wasn't even close. This was the 3rd and last time I go to the one in El Paso. First two times was for breakfast and I was disappointed with the food as well as the service. The third time was for dinner and let's just say Dennys was started to look and taste like a 4 star restaurant. The ambience is a hole in the wall gas station. The real Black Bear diners make you feel like you are in a beautiful cabin and any item you order is tastier and more satisfying than the next. The folks hired to work here in the El Paso Black Bear diner look miserable and it definitely rubs off onto the customers. I happened to see this place where I live and bypassed it. I was traveling through and saw it in El Paso and decided to give it a try. I had one of the breakfast platters with the pancakes. Let me begin by saying come hungry. The pancakes by themselves are huge and delicious. They are made with a sweet cream and you don't even really need syrup to eat them. Well, we thought we would give this place a chance for breakfast after we walked out from a terrible dinner a few months ago. After waiting for our food for 45 minutes after ordering, mine came with the red potatoes that, compared to other diners, were not browned, and some of the potatoes were not cooked. I asked for hashbrowns instead and got a slimey mess that hadn't finished cooking. For my California Eggs Benedict, the eggs were not to order, avocado was not ripe, and English Muffin was not toasted. Then I complained and said I could not eat the meal. Waitress went away, and then someone else came and asked what was wrong with the meal after I had just gone into detail with the waitress. Everyone was just indifferent and didn't care. A family of 4 walked out as they didn't get their food. We should have done the same. This was their last chance. read more

It balanced out, perhaps, by some other things, including, officially stated, longer than usual waiting times. Beware of some items being not price marked. So the food here easily makes this place a 3 or 4, but the service my family and I received kept it at a 3 1/2. The diner itself was on the empty side, so long waits are on the side of "whats going on" and "are they even cooking". This being said, I had called prior to my visit and know they had just gotten slammed. I travel with a handicap so it is normal practice to call ahead. The diner is accessible for those looking to try it. Our server took our drink orders and got them out at a reasonable time. The problem is that it was the only thing that came out correct. The soup we were told was tomato and basil, 10 mins later they came out its potatoe and bacon(okay who doesn't like bacon). Our orders were placed, which we found out were too early after they had been placed for another 5 or 10 mins. If you're a server, you should already know whether or not it's too early to order something. So entrees were swapped, and the server accomidated a substitution(brownie points). Now things went downhill. The sides were mixed up or sold out, and the wait for side prep was longer than the meal. No mashed potatoes for the first person who ordered until we were ready for desert. The desert was put to go even though I made it clear it was an after meal alamode, and this was stated 3 times. At the meal order, after the meal, and to a server who brought us the bill before the desert while our server was bagging our desert and i could see them in the process. Not to mention, through this whole meal, drinks were attended once, and the dirty dishes were never removed until I made it a point that the table was full. Wow! Ok now these portions are made to feed a hungry bear. The service is good all depending on who your server is. We got lucky and got an attentive friendly server other tables kept having to flag their servers down. My lunch date got the chicken fried steak and he said although it was huge the taste just wasn't there. I on the other hand can't say the same I got the we be jammin sandwich and it was so good. It's like a patty melt with so much yummy cheese and a bacon jam that has me still rolling my eyes and it's grilled on sourdough bread that's got a delicious parmesan cheese crust. I was only to eat half but enjoyed the other half later for dinner. The fries were ok not crispy it's like they were reheated and not seasoned at all. We got a huuuuuge cornbread muffin that was so warm and soft it's made with honey and comes with butter on the side and I'd go back for that muffin alone. It's in a truck stop and let me tell u the truckers we say next to were so cool. One got a taco salad that was bigger than his head it looked so good and he said he always gets it bcz it tastes so good and fills him up. It looks like it comes with a pound of everything! We were out on the East side today and decided to stop in at Black Bear diner for breakfast since we've eaten at other locations and enjoyed their food. Unfortunately, our experience at this one was not as enjoyable. We arrived about 9:15 and were seated immediately. However, we then sat for 20 minutes before our waitress stopped to get our drink order. During that 20 minutes we watched the waitress walk by several times, slowly taking care of the tables (3) around us. It is possible she had other tables, but it seems that the host could have either gotten our drinks or made sure the servers knew we were there. At about 10:20, we finally received our food. I ordered corned beef and eggs, hubby had the French toast. The corned beef was horrible and the eggs were undercooked and cold. The only redeeming factor was that the waitress did remove the meal from our ticket and we only paid for the French toast and coffee. BTW, the coffee is very strong - not bad - just strong. I won't say that we'll never go back, but I won't be making a special trip from the far West side to eat there. read more

Our waitress took our drink order, brought the drinks, then disappeared. Twice I had to stop another server for coffee. Our ticket time was 55 mins. At the time, half of the restaurant was tables waiting for food. I went up the the Expo manager to inquire about the wait, but was ignored. The kitchen window was full of food, but the expeditor was doing nothing but looking at their screen that was full of tickets that were all colored red with the ticket time listed. The problem was not that the cooks couldn't keep up, the expeditor, the person's who sole responsibility it is to run the cooked food to the tables, couldn't see over the kitchen window. They were too short to see what food was even there. So no waitress to complain to or ask for a manager, an expo manager who doesn't know what to do, and a Front of House manager who I only saw when they tried to deliver pancakes about 10-15 mins AFTER we started eating. I truly believe that that manager would have left all of our food there waiting for those pancakes. The manager tried to deliver the pancakes, and when we said that we didn't want them anymore...couldn't tell the server, no where to be found, he forcefully set them down on a table right next to us and stormed off. This place does not treat you like they value you or your business. If the kitchen was actually behind, the kitchen manager is there to step in and get it going again. The front of house manager did 0 table touches while I was there...almost 2 hours. If you are really hungry or have somewhere to be, DO NOT stop here to eat. You will be disappointed. read more
